Plant a cutting garden of Zinnias for next year!

  • For bright Autumn color all the way through September, consider the humble Zinnia in your cottage garden. It's simple, prepare your garden bed by adding a layer of compost or loosen your existing soil; plant seeds in a sunny location, according to packet directions, water until the seedlings appear and just watch them grow and grow! Zinnias are easy care plants and are not fussy...

I'm new to Zinnias and I'm kicking myself as to why I'm just now finding out about these BEAUTIFUL flowers 🌺. These are the gift that keeps on giving! It's 11-28-22 and I can't wait for late spring to plant after my tulips!✌️

I always plant a row of zinnias in my vegetable garden. They bloom all summer long. I love watching the butterflies, bees and hummingbirds that visit the zinnias while I’m in the garden working.

These were my salvation when I moved to Florida. They hold up to our hot summers better than any flower I know. My neighbors were blown away by my garden last year and I have to give most of the credit to the zinnias. Got blooms from April to first frost the following December.

Agree with that! Our summers are outrageously hot as well, but those zinnias just kept on blooming> AND dropped seeds for the next year.

I plant them every year. I start them indoors and put them everywhere with cosmos. My dad loved them and germinated them each year, I do it for him and myself. My favorite summer annual!

      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  6 років тому +1

I had to start a new zinnia indoors this year, it just would not take when planted directly in the garden. I've found that growing them alongside the cosmos really helps the cosmos to " stand up" without flopping over. It's a good flower combination.

These are my favorite ones! I had a huge cutting garden in Mobile AL that just was so full of these. I gave cut flowers to everyone and kept them in the house. I have not had the same luck here in Texas with them but I have big plans for next year. I have an area picked out and I want to plant native wild flowers and zinnias. Texas does have the most beautiful wildflowers. Yours look so pretty!

I know Texas is famous for it's Bluebonnet fields, wish we had those here. I am going to plant these ZInnias in every single garden next year, they have dwarf versions as well as these 5 footers.

Your video about Zinnia's inspired me to sow zinnia seeds in my garden. Now, 2 months later, beautiful Zinnia's are attracting bees, butterflies and pollinating insects. I'm a Network Engineer by profession, but I've always been fascinated by nature, wildlife and gardening. My garden has been a great place to escape from busy life. Since I live in a tropical countryside in India, hopefully I'll be able to grow them all year round. Thanks again for the video :)

We have several rows of Zinnias on our garden, and they're so easy. You don't even have to water them, just let the rain do all the work for you. Like you say, they attract butterflies like crazy. So do coneflowers, I've noticed. I'm planning an expirmental garden next year to see what attracts butterflies and what doesnt. We already have a well established community of butterflies, so I just want to see what they like and dont like.

Hi Jeri, thanks so much for sharing your breath taking Zinnias. I chose not to grow any this year and have regrets. I still have my seeds I have saved from the previous season and also found myself buying seed packets marked down to grow next season. I too prefer the softer romantic hues in my gardens. When I saw all your outstanding Zinnias in all their glory I know why I missed them so much this season. Thanks for that shot of inspiration. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. 😊

I never had zinnias in my garden before this year. I bought some in a six pack from the nursery and just stuck them in a wine barrel planter at the end of June. I am in love....these are some of the most hardy and beautiful flowers I have ever grown. They love the summer heat and I will always have these beautiful jewels in my garden from now on. Mine are more of a daisy like flower head and I am excited to plant from seed to see a better variety of flower shape. I noticed immediately how these plants just drew in butterflies, some of which I haven't seen since I was a young girl. :) I am smitten.

Marilyn, Zinnias are originally from Mexico, they really love the heat! I bet Russian Sage grows really well for you. I'm originally from Colorado, and the plants that do well in the dry heat of the west struggle a bit in our Tenn. Humidity, Zinnias are the exception.

love love love zinnias! Had a great bed of them when I lived in Mobile but since moving here to Texas I haven't done well with them. I am too covered over with shade and I think they don't get enough sun. It's very disappointing to me. Your's are great!

I was just outside planting seeds for a strip of LILAC Zinnias in my Potager. FULL HOT SUN. I understand that Lupines grow great in Texas... Bluebonnets, I think.

Omg we have the same perception. I wasnt really into zinnia because its common. My mom bought some of the flower and we took the dried seeds and throw some on the front yard. It impress me how beautiful it is when all the color together and how easy for it to grow and care. Now i cant get enough looking at it

Tayylor, That's what kept me from growing them for years, but I now grow many "common" flowers because they perform so beautifully.

Hello Jeri! I just discovered zinnias (I was looking for flowers looking like marigolds in pink/red). Definitely planning to buy some seeds for next year! I live in France, I'll try to plant the seeds at home in late March / early april.
Thank you for sharing, and, by the way, you have a very beautiful voice.

Thanks ChocoM! I am sure you will be pleased with your ZInnia patch, mine have been reseeding now for 3 years. I do have some blooming at this time that look very much like fat pink Marigolds.

Where did you get your seed? That's a really nice mix of varieties! I can't seem to find any mixes like that, but zinnias are my favorite!

The fact is, I got this packet of seed from the Dollar store for about 99cents! Visit Eden Brothers seed online, and I am sure you can find the variety pack. I buy a lot of seed from them. But this garden was a happy accident from a pack of seed I nearly threw in the trash!
