Transforming an ugly garden courtyard area

  • Most of us have an ugly section of the yard or garden that needs a facelift.. such was a corner in our back courtyard. In typical Hopalong Hollow fashion, with a rustic old-world look and a bit of maneuvering, I've eliminated an eyesore.

    So glad that this popped up in my feed tonight....been kinda going through some difficult times (between my physical pain & left alone to deal w/ my Mothers mental health issues w/ no help from siblings). Just love your soothing, peaceful presence & the garden space(s) that you have created are just so full of wimsy & rustic charm. Just such a delightful, magical oasis that you have created for yourself, your husband, & all of your fuzzy & feathered friends!!!!😊🦊🐰🐱🐶🐇🐣🐔🐥🦆🐿🌻🌷🌼🌸

    You worked very hard and did a lovely job,My husband made a patio out the back with all concrete square things not really pavers ,that were all haphazard over our property,Use what you have is our motto too ,We bought a few red pavers as we didn’t have enough to finish the area ,so he made a “rug “in the middle with them ,

    Absolutely gorgeous Jeri... and you're right I do have just such an area that is in need of some serious work. The wild bittersweet vine has completely overtaken my poor white lilac border at the south end of the house. It's an awful mess that will take me at least several days to clean up. But I'm still working on my potager and need to finish that before I move on to the border. One step at a time. Oh, and I picked up my Icelandic chicks on Sunday. They're so darn cute :-)

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  6 років тому +1

      I never could get that bittersweet to grow here... maybe it's a good thing I didn't. I'm still working in the Potager too, my peacocks marched through and ate ALL my little greens! I had to start all over with many of my seeds. Icelandic chicks? I must look them up, love little chicks.

    • @michelleackerson4524
      @michelleackerson4524 6 років тому

      Oh my gosh Jeri...no no no you don't ever want to have bittersweet on your property. Unfortunately It had already gotten a foothold on our land before we bought the place and now it's literally strangling a lot of our trees. It's darn near impossible to get rid of.... nasty stuff. Oh no....shame on those naughty lil peacocks. That's part of the reason I won't let my birdies free range anymore....that and we have so many predators in the area.

    Charming! Hooray for container gardens! Such a great solution for challenging spaces.
    I’m currently taking groundcover sedum clippings as I can and incorporating it into a low bank that has been eroding away. Technically it is a part of common ground which belongs to everyone and no one.
    However my neighbor, my husband, and I are transforming the neglected area gradually into a garden destination. It now has a stepping stone path; and plenty of bulbs and perennial flowers retired from our garden. This year I’m going to plant zinnias for additional cheer.🌼

    Jeri,
    This is so pretty and inspiring! I'm so excited about spring, I can't wait to get out and play in the dirt. So I've been watching your videos for inspiration for my own gardens. I was wondering if you had a tour of all your gardens and pathways, if so could you please link it. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely gardens, home and crafts with us.

    I love this video and how the garden transformed Into something amazing! My garden is a tragedy, there's so many useless things that are broken but cannot do anything about it since we don't have a skip to put it in.
    The grass does not grow at all! Just dry hard dirt, I feel disgusted whenever my friends come around... cannot do anything in the garden without feeling ashamed , I tried to tell my parents but they said no point of doing anything since we are going to be moving in about 3 months.... I dream and even draw pictures of the garden and hope I want it to be ..

      Sugarlump. Since you are moving in 3 months, I agree with your parents. But since you are drawing plans for your future garden, you'll be ready to create a lovely spot in your new home. Almost any unfortunate spot can be "fixed". Even your dry, packed dirt could have been amended by adding good soil and compost right on top of it, or making raised beds. Where there's a will there's a way; I am sure you'll have the garden spot you want with a little imagination and some hard work!

      @@JeriLandersofHopalongHollow I have lots of will and hope for any garden that we ever had :) but cannot do anything with them since we are always moving houses from time to time , maybe some time in the future I will be able to have my dream garden :D
      Thank you for responding also! This comment and video helped me have faith and hope for anything :)

      We have a concrete dealer in one of our tiny towns nearby,. Unfortunately, the bench is starting to chip here and there.

    Wow, how fantastic!!! 💕😍 I'm already hooked after this one video and just subscribed.
    Question: Why do u lay cardboard before laying compost?? Is it for holding moisture, stopping weed growth or something totally different??

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  5 років тому +5

      It is for killing the weeds and grass beneath, It really works well. Thanks for subscribing!

      Hi Kay, Put the cardboard down, wet it thoroughly, lay compost atop and you are ready to plant. I'm in Zone 7

    Insired by your videos and of course your beautiful gardens, I started to gather all the natural materials i could find around our property, plus potting pots / planters etc. Now i don't know where to start, ai guess I am a little overwhelmed. The hubby asked just one thing, please not make difficult for him to mow the land; also i stared to dig and pull weeds and i find out our soil is clay/ muddy heavily tightened; i am not going to lie i am a little frustrated because i have no clue how to start. I am mostly a pot gardener i can grow just about anything, i have lots and lots of potted plants everywhere (my kids call our home a jungle) but i have zero experience in ground gardens *sigh I feel like i am all over the place without a clue where or how to start. 😔

      Let me suggest a wonderful place to start. Go to Charles Dowding You tube channel. He will introduce you to no dig gardening for beginners. Start small, or you'll overwhelm yourself.

      I use compost from my own donkeys and sheep. But any purchased Compost would work fine on top of the cardboard.
