In the remake of the classic Black Christmas, a group of sorority girls stuck at school over winter break find themselves targeted by a deranged killer. While not as good as the original, the remake has its own gory and over the top charm. We're breaking down the story, including what we learn about the killer and explaining the ending.

Honestly poor Billy. He was never given any true kindness and was abused, raped, and denied love.
Poor him yes ofc, but bro was basically a psychopath. A psychopath due to environmental factors. My uncle when he was younger went through extremely similar atrocities I won’t get into detail about, but unfortunately shares a past like Billy. The trauma is still there and he takes medicine, goes to therapy, and does spiritual work, but he is a very very successful man (grandma had him at 15 and her parents made her give him up for adoption). His foster parents were both really sick individuals and collectively participated in his torment for their pleasure

Just watched it for the first time, and yeah, the phone calls are just so creepy, they get under your skin right away.
The ending is the scariest part. The main character is basically doomed in the end
Just in case anybody's wondering the original Black Christmas is also an icon for giving John Carpenter his idea for Halloween
The phone calls in that film are legitimately terrifying. I'm a horror movie fan and am always looking to be creeped out, chilled, or scared, and those phone calls are a little too real to me.
Billy in the original was terrifying because the 70's had a huge problem with crazy people going on random murder sprees constantly it was a huge problem

You know you're living in an era of cultural and creative stagnation when a reboot of a movie you hated is so bad it makes you appreciate the earlier one.
Honestly I could see this reboot had a lot of potential for being actually good. It had all the ingredients to be good but still didn’t.

one of the things that makes the original Black Christmas so good is the fact we know so little about the Murderer
Which makes it stupid from other peoples perspective see how people can have different opinions
Surprised you didn’t mention that Mrs. Mac was played by the great Andrea Martin who also played Phyl in the 1974 original. Fun fact, Martin did the original Black Christmas between starring in a now-legendary Toronto production of Godspell and becoming one of sketch comedy show SCTV’s founding cast members. Additional fun fact, Martin was born and raised in Portland, Maine making one of only three Americans to ever be part of SCTV’s main cast (the other two being Pittsburgh’s Joe Flaherty and Chicago’s Harold Ramis).

Drunk girl wasn't killed off screen you might have watched some rated/cut version. She wakes up and realizes Billy is feeling her up and before she can grab a weapon I think she gets killed
If it wasn’t in the version he watched then it did indeed happen of screen.

I think what made me like the original from 1974 is the fact you never learn who the killer is.. And oh boy that eye behind the door and the screams.
This movie is one of my holiday guilty pleasures. It's soooo bad but I still love it and all of the insanity it holds.

Being from Alaska originally there's known cases where icicles have been known to cause physical harm, with that state it's mainly because of there weight and density and not to pointyness
from what I've seen, there's a lot of eye imagery, and the first girl killed off looks like she gets stabbed in the eye. is this all because of that eye through the door crack shot of Billy's eye from the original?
Yeah my guess is they just wanted this to be as Gorey and nasty as possible, so they were brainstorming and was like "there's those shots of his eye in the first one, let's just make every kill eye-related" and let's actually make Agnes real and she eats eyes!!! 👀
They should have called it Christmas eyeve 👀

I truly loved this movie. I’ve rewatched it multiple times over the years and that’s honestly rare for me. I had no idea that there was a previous version and that this one was a remake.
Me too. This film, and The Descent are the only films with an all female cast I actually enjoy.
This was actually a guilty pleasure and preferred this than the remake, and was my original exposure to the black Christmas until I learned this was a remake

I love this movie, I can understand why it was so vilified back when it was released but I think it's got its very own charms and virtues. Had it been named differently, just like the 2005 remake of House of Wax, it would have probably gotten a warmer reception

This is one of our favorites at the Kincade house! We’ve watched this one probably 20 times not including the fact we have watched it with the kids the last 3 years on Christmas Eve night! They love it as much as me and my wife! I’m glad you covered it!!

I dont know i feel like this explains to much. Billy in the first one was very emotionally disturbed and sometimes had a very childishness to how he acted and you never actually learned who he was at the end. Also the phone calls were far more deranged

That’s a problem we still often see in reboots/remakes of classic horror movies, they almost always think giving the monster a more filled-out backstory makes it scarier even though it almost always boils down to “they were abused and/or bullied as a child.” I don’t want to understand or empathize with Billy or Leatherface or Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, I want to be afraid of them.

I felt the same way with Cube. The first left a ton of unanswered questions but was great to watch. The sequel answered so many questions but was just not that good at all.
Hey, a really cool 90s horror movie to check out would be Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs. I remember seeing this when it came out. Twin Peaks fans were happy.

This movie is the best christmas movie. it’s unhinged and chaotic love it sm
I don't blame the director for this re-boot, the studio fought with him the entire time to be gory and less suspenseful. The cinematography is beautiful and a very colorful horror film. Also I actually felt sorry for Billy. When he killed his mum I felt no remorse she deserved that.
This one at least builds up the killer's backstory at least, though I wish Eve had been Agnes. I still haven't seen the 2019 version, and I don't know if I ever will. It sounded awful and stupid honestly. Maybe if I find it for free on here or Tubi...

Don't, trust what everyone says the 2019 is complete garbage, at least the 2006 made it some what Interesting, while the 2019 is........ just don't watch. Think of it like that Live action "Cats" movie.
The 2019 movie just uses the Black Christmas name, little to no relation with the 1974 or 2006 plot.

pretty sure there being two killers was supposed to be a surprise they give us lots of clues but its definitely a twist the first watch.

Always found it funny that Bob Clark was actually called in as a consultant on the remake of Black X-Mas and that a lot of the stuff in the backstory was stuff he himself approved of.

@@neonicon8500 Basically, in late 2018 Blumhouse got some flak for never putting out any horror movies directed by women then got even more flak after it came up in an interview and Jason Blum gave a laughably bad answer (it basically boiled down to “we’ve asked a couple but they weren’t interested, also I don’t think women even like directing horror movies”). So six months later Blumhouse announced they got the remake rights to Black Christmas and hired Sophia Takal (who’d just directed an episode of their Into the Dark anthology series) to write and direct it. It was then hustled through the entire writing and production process in about five months so they could make a December 13th 2019 release date. Sadly Takal was left holding the bag for a movie that Blumhouse set up to fail by giving a relatively inexperienced (but promising) young filmmaker less than six months to take it from the words “Black Christmas remake” to wide theatrical release.
