The history with the glasses is so interesting - everyone I've heard talk about this movie has sneered about the glasses being stupid, but never mentioned the homage to the original! I didn't even know there WAS an original.
Why do people find them stupid? I think it’s cool that you need them to see the ghosts it adds to the reason we don’t see ghosts running around everywhere
The original is lots of fun! Not scary - more like a suburban family comedy. It's got Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz.
I remember the DVD telling the back stories and I was like “This needs to be a series” and rewatching it again I still believe it can be turned into a series
If you were living in a s*it hole and found yourself as a woman in a fabulous bathroom like that - hell yeah! I've done that in several upscale hotels while on vacation even though my house has a bathroom that people take pictures of -- with a rain shower, a bench and pebbles for tile. Loved and STILL love this movie. My only complaint is the oldest daughter - she looks like she's at least 25 not 17 in the flick so had to look over that. But otherwise, a very enjoyable and fun film IMHO.
One thing that did stick with me was that Dennis does technically sacrifice himself for Arthur, and since Kalina is trying to get Arthur to kill himself for the ritual maybe it doesn't necessarily need to be a true love sacrifice, I think that Dennis became the 13th and Arthur accidentally used the machine to see when it would be safe to jump to his kids,
The key thing to note is that the 13th is needed to 'stop' the machine. I think it is actually to fully activate the machine. Since suicide, you know. Kinda bad by a lot of religions. They were lying about his sacrifice stopping the machine. Why would they actually NEED him to kill himself? It's described that the machine is to open up the eye of hell, so it makes sense that the last one would be a soul that is required to be sent directly to hell. Thus OPENING the eye of hell.
It could also be just a "sacrificing yourself for someone" death to be the 13th, since you risk your life to save someone else's. (Just adding this here.)
This is a fantastic idea but I think it couldn't be that just because if it was that he was the 13th having sacrificed himself the eye of hell would have opened with the ritual without the need of Arthur to make the jump giving Cyrus immortality
One of my favorite details about this movie is that some of the ghosts ‘talk’! The Jackal screams “leave me alone!” and the angry princess says “I’m sorry” “Stop!” “is that him?”

I think The Torso also screams for help when he crawls towards Bobby. It would have been cool if The Bound Woman in the prom dress spoke to other male characters besides just Bobby, since she was infamous for being a heartbreaker of numerous guys.

Ah, Magie. Defying stereotypes. Not only did she survive to the end of a horror film, she is the unsung heroine. She saved the family. And ensured the villain didn't become a living god with Hellish omniscience (did she save the world, too?!) , and got his comeuppance. Above and beyond nanny service.
After I first saw the movie I literally wanted to make that exact thing, but then life sort of happened and I abandoned that all together. I do have a friend in film....hmmmm....guess I gotta learn script writing from him too. I'll send it into Netflix and hope they don't ruin it like they did Death Note.
it's because of too much lore that the movie is ultimately not as complete as it could be. Backstory and lore are great and all, but too much of it without proper presentation through the film is ultimately just window dressing that takes away from it, because it'll end up feeling like it could have been more(or was "planned" to get more) but now is completely unfinished in scope.
That's one thing I love about this movie. They actually gave them believable backstories that make the ghosts more complex. I never get tired of watching them since I own the DVD of the movie.

Theres so many bad movies. Normally, unneeded S-Scenes are a big obvious hint to the bad Quality. But this common sense has been lost to many, cause reasons... But i remember the common sense, so i write this random comment, in the hope that people regain some common sense.
Deus ex machina-ish, the house was transport for ancient ghost aliens (or emerged, fully formed from within the earth), ergo, no reason to explain how or why it was built. It just was.
I’ve always had a soft spot for this movie. The ghosts were the main reason, and, for some reason, Matthew Lillard. The Dark Astrology is also really interesting and the back stories for each ghost..
This is one of the movie I always revisit in October. One of my favorites. I think they should make this a series & explore the individual ghosts in each episode & more into Cyrus & the machine. There is so much to this story that could be explored.

This movie has so many memorable ghost that most people who watch this, when they were young like me, forgot the name of the movie than the ghost themselves.
I unknowingly have been looking for this film for years, I remembered a naked woman and a man being vertically sliced in half but that was about it - and yet! Here it is!
They could have fixed it by having the little boy be of special needs, so that the sister doesn't have the skills to care for him, and replacing the "nanny" with a professional specialized in whatever his problem is.

bruhh when yu said "im off to be shaggy, its my destiny" that shit had me laughin harddd
When he said "It's Shaggin' Time" and Shagged all over ghosts, I knew his Doo really was scooby.
Ah, Magie. Defying stereotypes. Not only did she survive to the end of a horror film, she is the unsung heroine. She saved the family. And ensured the villain didn't become a living god with Hellish omniscience (did she save the world, too?!) , and got his comeuppance. Above and beyond nanny service.
She went so above and beyond nanny service, she didn’t bother with the nanny service at all. Just skipped it entirely.
Saving them kids in the end > cleaning windows
Unfortunately, black female friend who saves white protagonists is a trope too. (Plus her sassiness.) But, yeah.
Maggie was the hero of the film. Mary Poppins has nothing on her.
Has every stereotype in the book. And generally sets back every black character in every movie.
I wish they would bring this movie to Netflix as a 13 episode miniseries where each episode covers one of the ghosts
I'm totally into that. They could put more money into it n make it darker.
Good idea
After I first saw the movie I literally wanted to make that exact thing, but then life sort of happened and I abandoned that all together. I do have a friend in film....hmmmm....guess I gotta learn script writing from him too. I'll send it into Netflix and hope they don't ruin it like they did Death Note.
@@onepman I like dat 🤤
That's an excellent idea
this movie had too much lore, it deserved a series or something
It truly did
it's because of too much lore that the movie is ultimately not as complete as it could be. Backstory and lore are great and all, but too much of it without proper presentation through the film is ultimately just window dressing that takes away from it, because it'll end up feeling like it could have been more(or was "planned" to get more) but now is completely unfinished in scope.
Or an exploration/survival video game.
It got one Supernatural
If you haven't check out Friday the 13th:The Series (nothing to do with the Jason movies.)
That's one thing I love about this movie. They actually gave them believable backstories that make the ghosts more complex. I never get tired of watching them since I own the DVD of the movie.
this is just a Scooby doo movie set in the future where the gang split up after scooby´s death and only shaggy continue hunting ghosts
Yeah and we find out that Shaggy was actually always psychic but was using scooby snax to suppress his abilities. But after Scooby died, he wanted to communicate with his friend. So goes cold turkey on the scooby snax and becomes a full fledged psychic. Damn that got dark.

The end dancing was a funny as hell...savage!
Saw this at a sleepover, back in 6th grade. Couldn't sleep for a month. They all could do with their own show, but the Jackal alone, is terrifying enough to have his own movie/series. Like how did he become that way in the first place?

That's how I felt about Dark Water, I was only 7 when it came out (the main character's daughter is 5 in the movie) so that didn't help. No one ever knew what I was talking about!

That's me and Deep Rising. My aunt had a bootleg copy on vhs and I watched it multiple times for some reason. matthew lillard’s performance here is absolutely the best!
I never realized how many references there are to other horror film: The Hammer's story is similar to Candyman.
The circus one = "Tallman" and the movie 'Freaks'.
The way the juggernaut was killed reminds me of Jason Voorhees’ death in the beginning of Jason goes to hell
The Hammer also sort of reminds me of the Folk Hero John Henry, albeit much darker.
They go to separate hells or heavens. They can only be ghost where they died unless trapped elsewhere. The house was a prison basically for them just like their places of death. They are free now.
When the review mentioned side-show performers being accepting, I immediately said, "one of us! One of us!"
It's always bothered me how the ghost's backstories weren't explored in the film. Time constraints, I know. But THANX for providing their backstories. I never get tired of hearing them.

Deus ex machina-ish, the house was transport for ancient ghost aliens (or emerged, fully formed from within the earth), ergo, no reason to explain how or why it was built. It just was.
That's why it's a bad movie.
The remake was much better than the original.
I’ve always had a soft spot for this movie. The ghosts were the main reason, and, for some reason, Matthew Lillard. The Dark Astrology is also really interesting and the back stories for each ghost..

straight up still the most 0-100 intro to a movie I've ever seen
I never understood the nanny, when the practically-grown sister could've watched him.
They could have fixed it by having the little boy be of special needs, so that the sister doesn't have the skills to care for him, and replacing the "nanny" with a professional specialized in whatever his problem is.
@@miticaBEP07 but then she’d be professional instead of sassy
@@connorgillispie7128 not necessarily. A family with little money picks a caretaker that doesn’t cost much. Someone with little experience and who at times lets her big personality slip out.
The dad didn't think his daughter was responsible enough to care for her brother while he was at work and wanted them to have a female role model.
I thought that too, but I fucking love Rah Digga. So, that thought was quickly dismissed.
I watched shaggy get murdered, when I was 6. Never wanted to watch this movie after the first time I did lol. As I got older and understand movies more I actually really enjoy this one for what it is.
