We prefer shooting with Super 35 especially for nature documentary films. For example you get closer to a subject in nature filming with super 35. Also the Arri Alexa 35 is a super 35 camera with amazing low light capabilities and 17 stops of dynamic range for HDR filming. Our Sony FX30 is a beast. No problem with noise in lowlight. It's all about exposure and we use cinema lenses TO.5 or lenses with F1.4. Full Frame also has noise. I also prefer Apsc because of the variety of lenses. Even the new RED 8K is super 35. On UA-cam unfortunately they are promoting FF as the best for pro work and simply isn't true. Great video.
@@AexoeroVdepends on the camera. Being 12MP, the FX3 can only use the Super35 crop in 1080p whereas higher megapixel cameras like the A7 III/A7 IV etc can do S35 in 4K too.
@@AexoeroV Yes, but for example with the FX3 if you go into crop mode you'll be forced to film in 1080p. The sensor is around 10mp so if you crop into it there won't be enough pixels for 4K video (8mp whereas 1080p is 2mp)
Maaaan >'m new to your channel. I cannot appreciate enough how you just get right into the video. Most YT gives you a 3-5 minute tour of the universe before talking. Your style definitely my style.
I think 99% of the people who sit and complain over the fx30’s crop sensor in various comment sections don’t even require a camera as powerful as the fx30 let alone the fx3! I absolutely love my fx30 but I only use cameras for fun personal stuff and for that I have zero complaints
I have an FX30. The FX3 may be a tad bit better, but if value comes into play, the FX30 is everything. I don't mind shooting APSC, but then again I'm an hobbyist/professional. I use it for my side job. If video was the thing that kept my lights on I would buy an FX6 and/or FX3, but till then these Super 35s are keeping me alive(did a little rhyme at the end for comedic effect)!
I make my living with my camera, so I need the full frame. My FX-6 is my A Cam, my FX-3 is my B Cam and I wound up picking up the FX-30 as my C Cam. I couldn’t be happier with these three options all with excellent image quality while all serving their own distinctive purposes. 😊
I have 2 FX3s and 2 FX30s that I mainly use. In a lot of ways, I prefer the FX30 than the FX3, but that’s just my subjective preference. I believe both cameras does great in contexts that really takes advantage of their strengths. Most of their weaknesses are easily fixable in post. I film mainly live dance and theatre performances, both on stage and in-studio, with a multi-cam set-up. So, that footprint is perfect for my needs. In that context, there are things that the FX3 can do that the FX30 can’t. So, I use both of them to be able to do a lot more creative things with camera angles and depth of field in extreme lighting conditions that are common in shooting live shows. At the end of the day, it’s less about the tech specs of a camera than how it really performs in the real world when it’s in the hands of the person who knows what they’re doing with it. You can’t go wrong with either camera, really. But, FX30 is hands down the best bang for the buck. If you have a limited budget or just starting out, I say get the FX30. There are quite a lot of APSC lens choices to give you what you need to go a long way with for a fraction of what you would spend on glass for FX3. Spend the rest of your money getting a good audio recording and lighting gear to complete a full production set-up that can actually earn you money instead. I honestly don’t see a reason to get an FX3, unless you really need it to do what an FX30 can’t do and are going to fully take advantage of the full frame sensor. Otherwise, it’s not worth spending the extra cash. That said, if you’re not sure if you need an FX3 and really want to spend an extra couple of grand, I say get the FX30 and a really fast, full frame GM prime lens. You’ll be amazed what an FX30 can do with an f1.4 prime, shooting wide open in low light with a well composed scene. Probably better to spend more money on lenses anyways.
Thank you so much for breaking down the differences in between the two camera I am the fx3 guy I've used the Sony fx3 a lot of time that is one of the best cinematic camera I use every time including the FX6 it's a good time listening to you breaking down the differences in between these two camera thank you so much I enjoy the time
Yep, there are many situations where a shallow depth of field is definitely not 'better'. There is a lot of min/max ideas among some people that I think are born out of looking at technical specs and specific sample shots rather than actually using cameras and shooting stuff. Background has to do with it a lot too, I've got the bug at times coming from a lot of stills photography where controlling the focus is a lot more central thing to how your results come out and a lot more practical to do. Shooting static in a studio with lights and flashes for stills there is bunch of stuff you can do with focus that are not really realistic to do with video. Sure, walking the plane of focus from one face to another in a scene without moving the camera is a kinda cool effect, direction attention by focus and so on, fine - but it's nearly never necessary and the "cost" of the ability to do that is very high. From body to lenses to takes to get it right.
Thank you so much! I am just starting out, with the ultimate goal of learning and creating projects (narrative/Documentaries/spec work etc.) for the next year, then putting together a longer documentary that is going to be a real passion project. I have gone down the rabbit hole of "which of these is best" and not one person before you put it so succinctly! Really appreciate the video, and the information has given me the confidence to just save the money on the body.
Thanks for this video, I'm just now starting out getting into filmmaking I think I'm going to go with the FX30 as my entry point as a director and overall as a filmmaker.
I have paired the FX30 with the GM 24mm F1.4 for the third two person shot in my video podcast set up. The guest gets the luxury of the FX6/GM 50mm F1.2 and as host I get the A7S3/Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8
FX30 honestly is a great option as a b or c camera; I plan on getting one to add my line up just for weddings or for a c cam for other multi cam shoots since it's so affordable compared to other cameras in that range; it's crazy how good the fx30 is though for the price compared to the Sony a7iii which doesn't even begin to hold up in quality/color (at least in slog3) due to it only shooting in 8 bit vs the 10 bit you can pull from fx30, Sony a7iv and others
Tried out both and honestly prefer the FX30. Even filming at blue hour, ISO 3200 is more than enough with the introduction of a little bit of subtle, extra light sources.
Team FX30 here… Overall it’s a great camera, all the things that are considered shortcomings aren’t. Especially when you’re using the camera on production, having proper lighting solves 95% of those problems.
Another point for the FX30. For the same features (OSS, electrical zoom, F/4) On FF : 24-135 G OSS F/4 - 1215 g, 2500 € On APS-C : 18-105 G OSS F/4 - 427 g, 550 € .. And the IQ in good light conditions is better on the FX30 because it's 6K downsized in 4K. I think for someone who has the FX6 there is no reason to get the FX3 or the A7Sxxx It's time for the old 12 MP FF sensor to retire :)
I wasn’t a fan of the fx30 in low light situations. People are comparing it to the arri but most people that use an arri also have a gaffer. The fx30 isn’t that great in low light.
The fx30 isn’t a low light camera for the most part, it holds up OKAY, but it’d be crazy to think it’s the same as an fx3 in that area, that said, the image in well lit situations is actually great 👍🏾
Bro the fx30 is such a fantastic camera. I've been shooting on mine for 18 months now in personal and professional situations and it's just been awesome. I now need a second camera body for what I shoot and I'm thinking of getting the fx3 just to have the full frame functionality but it's a really hard decision because the 30 has been so great. If anyone is getting into filmmaking and considering between these two, 100% just get the fx30. You can use the rest of your budget for lenses, audio, lights etc. and actually get out there and shoot for the same price as a camera body. This video is awesome man!
Very nicely presented video. Thank you for a "level headed", no-nonsense video. Glad I found your channel, going to follow you for more content. My current video platforms are the FX30, A7Siii and the little ZV-E10.
The difference of opinion stems from Sony's super refined market segmentation of each camera now. Each one suits a particular segment really well, like this FX30 for pro b-cam. Those not in that category might either find it an overkill or inadequate, but for those whose need it serves, it is really good. So sony definitely knows what it's doing, while Canon cameras are rather similar to each other.
This is great! I was just at my local cam shop and looking to trade my lumix s1. I was looking at the a7rv but the fx30 might be all i need. Thank you.
I’ve been avoiding this video because I wanted the FX3 just because of full frame but I needed more info so now that I got this from you.. well, Kofi you sold me. I am joining the FX30 Boiz. Apsc isn’t bad at all. I started out with bmpcc4k and that’s a Micro 4/3rds sensor. 1.5x crop is NOTHING lol thanks for the info! Amazing content as always.
As an FX30 Owner I can tell you now, the man makes the camera the camera does not make the man. Will I own an FX3? One Day Yes, but by that time comes there will be an FX3 MII lol
Ive been using my FX30 since it came out and even if im not on a shoot or a job, i just pull it out and play with it. Do some nature shots or something. Maybe shoot a 5 min self shot short film or something just to have fun because its just so much fun to play with that camera (especially when its rigged out). I only have one but ive hit a point where im eye balling getting a second as my B camera because music video productions are ramping up for me now. I would go for an FX3 or maybe even an FX6....BUUUUUT what's the return on investment? To some a lot, to me? Not so much. I started off on an A6600 so Im already stuck in "Super35" mindset with lens choices, framing, crops, etc. So moving forward to the FX30 was a breeze when it came to that. So I prefer the FX30. Plus, I really dont notice that 1 stop less of dynamic range at all (like you mentioned) Also to note that I think you forgot to mention (but you did in other videos) - the FX30 is a 6k sensor, not 4k, then downscaled to 4k as its output file. So that gives you latitude for the cool stuff like the clear image zoom, using Active-Stabilization when full handheld not in a heavy rig and still have true 4k, all the cool trinkets you can do when your output file is 4k coming from a 6k sensor and STILL have true "4k". I can even crop in post a tiny bit and notice zero quality lose because of how sharp the 4k is. So my heart right now lies with the FX30. Lenses are cheaper, i have more lens options, the Siuri line of APSC e-mount lenses are like half the price of their full frame counterparts. It really keeps costs for me down while keeping quality extremely high in my opinion. I do wish though RAW was not cropped so much but my conspiracy to that is Sony locked it at 4.7k so FX3 users didnt bitch about not having 6k RAW...because they cant. Thats more of an issue with "RAW" and not really Sony (in a matter of speaking). But i've learned again to deal with that crop if I want to do a shoot all in RAW. Although, I do wish both the FX30 and FX3 just unlocked 12 bit color for us. At the very least, needing to use a CFexpress card or shooting to ProRes externally. That would be a cool feature I would like to see aswell as open gate...but I have heard Jason Morris hint that Opengate might actually be a feature coming to us soon after talking to Sony about it.
We've been getting ready to grab the FX30 and use it for some wildlife videography... A S35 camera plus our Sony 200-600mm becomes a 300-900mm instantly.. and at 4k 120 that would be a 450-1300mm! Think it should complement the A7iv we have nicely.
Another thing to be mentioned is that fx30 with 6K sensor gives you the sharpest footage in 24, 30 and 60fps among Fx3 and fx6 when the light condition is well set, which is great. It's nice to have a look different from the previous camera.
@@KofiYeboah Best of luck, my friend. I’ve been doing a ton of research this time, unlike almost ALL of my prior purchases. I feel confident this is going to be a killer combo.
You’re very talented. I rarely see someone take these cameras and make them look like cinema rather than digital video. Are there any pre or post production tools or equipment that helps you do this? ❤
@@KofiYeboah damn, so many videos look digital! I thought filters and Dehancer or something lol thanks 🙏 My wallet says watch Kofi videos. Then my eyes see the majority of shit and I’m like nahhhh I’ll use my iPhone 😂
For me it was actually stills that kept me from the FX3. I'm mostly video, but when I do shoot stills 12MP isn't going to do it. I even sold all my full-frame lenses to go back to APS-C. I was planning to buy an A7IV before the FX30 came out.
I'm not on Team Sony, but my primary camera is the BMPCC 6k g2, which is a s35 sensor and it's fantastic. Yeah maybe i have to spend a few extra minutes with composition but then at the same time i'm not thinking, "man if this was just full frame i could....." that's never been a thing! lol! And yeah low light, but i've never had this itch to shoot in a room with no lights! lol, yeah i know that's not exactly what "low light" means, but still the vast majority of scenarios lack of light hasn't also been a thing when I shoot. so yeah, the s35 vs ff debate is interesting but from a day to day just out shooting perspective, not a primary concern. p.s. your footage though does look fantastic
As a wedding videographer I have a A7sIII and a FX3, as a C-cam thinking about getting a FX30, what is your input? In fact I'm planning to sell my Sony a6500 that has many apsc lenses that I could use on FX30... sony fan boy! Thank you for your great content!
The fx30 is brilliant. I honestly think when not in low light you pretty much can't tell the difference between the 3 and 30. Especially if you already have some APSC glass from your a6500 (fx30 would be a huge upgrade from a6500 as a C cam for sure).
Im a casual video maker and quality wise fx30 is plenty. The reason I sold the fx30 is that it cannot shoot stills continuously at all. I don't even mind the no mech shutter. But even electronic at 6 to 8 FPS is fine. This is cripple hammer stuff😂 that I actually found the need to use a 2nd camera for. Maybe this is a weird requirement but I found this the most lacking part of the fx30 strangely enough.
Great advice. You have in Black and white. Yes if a pro videographer and can cover up with few projects better give a better final product to your client. Cheers mate ❤
I’m switching over from Nikon which when it comes to mirrorless except for the z9 (kinda) they are good but… that’s my bigger gripe, the way I see it if I’m spending 2k and I’m going to be face by shortcomings I might as well go for the FX3. With that said, the FX30 it’s half the price and something that should seriously be considered. One more thing to consider is that the FX3 is a few years old and at some point Sony its going to upgrade it (who knows). In the end, it’s not an easy decision as it seems 😂
@@BrittneyJanae Maybe, but I’m angry at how Nikon has made subpar cameras while I been waiting for them to make a good one. The reviews on the Z8 have only pushed me towards the Z9 or out of the brand completely
I'm on my 4th video of yours, and your content is SUPER informative and digestible, man! This has been the most helpful video for these two cameras I've seen! #Subscribed!!!
i have a MacBook Pro 16- in (M2 Max, 2023) . . . if i was to use the CFexpress Type A 160GB Memory Card, with the Sony FX30 Camera, would i need a USB-C adapter to get files off the memory card, onto the MacBook Pro 16- in (M2 Max, 2023) ?
Yep you'd need a CF -A card reader for that. But you don't have to use the CF cards. I just got two Sony Tough 128GB SD cards with my fx30 and am yet to find a situation where it hasn't worked. The Sony SD's are fast enough for 10 bit 4K footage, you'd just need the CF express cards if you were wanting to shoot all the way up to the highest frame rates.
Mark Wiemels did a video on the 7artisans 50mm T1.05 manual focus lens, which could fix the FX30's low-light issues. Mark's low-light footage was beautiful. He only had a campfire to light his scene. No noise in the footage.
I'll fully cop to being a complete amateur in video. It's something I started learning during the pandemic as a way to generate some higher quality recording studio/music related content for myself and my bands. Prior to the pandemic, I just used crappy action cams and minimal (if any) lighting. Then I started to learn a bit (from channels like yours, props) and bought my first "real" cameras and glass. I couldn't really afford to get into a FF ecosystem to start (because being a touring musician and running a recording studio eats up a large gear budget), so I opted for APS-C, in specific, the Sony A6400. I bought two, because I needed to capture multiple angles at once. And I didn't opt for the 6600 because the majority of things I shoot are static, so IBIS wasn't a high priority. I had limited glass to start, but immediately started getting better, more polished results. I got read pretty hard by some of the more accomplished people I spoke to for using a crop system over FF, but in truth, given controlled lighting and static shooting, I've actually been really pleased with what I've gotten, excusing some of the lower quality glass. Even now, I've got about 7 lenses and only two of them could be counted as "great" glass. I say all this because I want to up my game and I've been seriously (like, I currently have my finger over the 'buy now' button) considering the FX30. It seems like just the thing for someone like me. But I've been seeing all kinds of people shitting all over it on the Internet. It's hard to separate fact from fiction these days, I know, but I appreciate the level consideration you've given in this video. I like usable, actionable, unbiased analyses.
@@dcmenow I did buy it. I think it’s a great camera and I’m stoked with what it can do, but less than a month after I bought it, Sony came out with a camera that does almost everything the fx30 does for $400 less. The a6700 might be a better option for you. Here are the notable differences that I can note between the two: - the fx30 has a more robust, more durable body design, but it is a little bigger and weighs a tiny bit more. - the fx30 has an in-body fan system, which means it’s nearly impossible to make it overheat, whereas the a6700 might do so if you shoot longer clips. - the fx30 has a full-size HDMI out, which only makes a difference if you hate microHDMI like I do. - the fx30 has Cine EI mode, which is nice, but I haven’t really noticed any difference except in S-Log3. - the a6700 has the “new, improved” Sony AI Autofocus chip, which is supposed to be better, but I honestly don’t know, nor do I have any complaints with the fx30s AF. - the FX30 is Netflix-approved. That doesn’t really matter unless you’re shooting stuff that might get on Netflix. 😂 Apart from that? Unless you really need or want anything that the fx30 has specifically, maybe you can save yourself a bit of money.
@@CaseyLewis Damn bro that was such a helpful list of information!! I appreciate it! So if you were recommending me a camera that will give you the best quality professional film which one should i go with? The fx30 because its legit a cinematic type camera or does the other do the same thing?
@@dcmenow well, they both have the same sensor, the same resolutions, codecs, shooting modes (except Cine EI, as mentioned), take the same lenses and have most of the same options. I would say that the footage out of both cameras in every other instance OTHER than Cine EI in S-Log3 would be indistinguishable. And even in that case it wouldn’t be a massive output difference to shoot Flexible ISO instead of Cine EI in S-Log3. Two other things I forgot to mention: the fx30 also has dual card slots that can take SD or CFExpress; AND it is apparently better weather sealed. So unless you’re planning on long, professional shoots in hot environments, need external recording, need redundancy and flexibility in media storage, want to use the optional fx30 audio top handle for audio capture, or really want to squeeze an extra half a stop of DR out of the sensor, I’d say the footage you get out of the a6700 would be identical.
Dope video Kofi, love your insight. Deff team Fx30, just got mine this week. Couldn’t be happier, coming from an A6000 didn’t really matter what I got 😂😂
been wanting to get the fx3 as my firsgt 'real' cinema level camera but after this video it seems that the fx30 is more than enough. sure, the full frame sensors are sexy as hell, but for my user case, the fx30 seems like the sweet spot
New to the channel. Awesome video and explanation. I have the FX3 and have been shooting with it for 2 months now and absolutely love it. I considered the FX30 but a lot of my shoots are in and out of low light situations so I opted for the FX3. But dang if it didn't feel like I paid a ton for extra legroom on a flight. lol Love the channel!
I am on the fence about the FX3 - I already own a Sony A7IV as main camera and would very much want to stay in the Sony ecosystem. ( tons of lenses and even recently bought my first Cine lens ) The only concern is will Sony release an updated FX4 / FX3 Mark II / A soon 👀 -
Not only the FX3 has more dynamic range, much better low light performance, shallower depth of field, the rolling shutter is incomparably better also. There’s a massive difference in price tag for a reason.
Who cares about low light? Seriously. Paid filmmakers light their scene. Fx30 is more than good enough for most cases. Next question, is fx3 realky better in low light? Second base iso is 12800, who shoots at 12800? I never did. 12800 also means the camera is wax noisier than other cameras with second base iso at 4000 which is a much more likely used is. A lumix s5 for 2000 is much better at all isos under 12800. for my work i never went over 1600-4000 iso. Usally i stay under 1000shallow depth of field? Lol most film makers never shoot under 2.8-f4 the bokee nonsense comes from photographers. Remember most cinema movies are shot on super35/apsc. No one ever complained about a lack of bokee.
@castiel vargasTV I care about low light :) I plan to use it as a run and gun camera. Won't have the time to always set up lights. And in my opinion, the FX30's low light performance makes it comparable to other "hybrid" bodies around that price point. It's an incredible camera but wanting to move away from that price range gets you less and less options to choose from.
@@tsuriranpu lumix s5 is much better than f30 in low light and up to 12800 its better than fx3 until you shoot in pitch black you will never need a fx3 shooting with no lights usually looks like crap anyway no matter how good low light performance is. Its not professional. Controlling light is key for filming just like it is for photography. If you only shoot for documentary purposes or for fun no one cares about a bit noise tough. I used to shoot with a gh5 at night which is not a good low light camera at all and no one ever complained about picture quality .
Great video Kofi. New subscriber and great content. Literally deciding this week between both. The link for the comparison video doesn't pop up for me. Any chance of linking or saying which video it is on your channel? Thanks!
Love your content bro! One of my go to creators for camera knowledge. Quick question. Based on your opinion, if I shoot content like PC builds for my channel with an FX6 and I’m looking for a second angle camera. You think the FX30 will be more than enough for this? Considering all factors like matching color and so on.
I disagree with you that the sensor size make a difference in image quality- think about the pocket cinema cameras, either s35 or mft sensor they produce an overall better image quality than the fx3 but that’s just my 2 cents
Hey m still on a oldskool canon 90D boat but ready to go with sony now with fx30 most of my work is short film making and documentary shoot what sony lenses would you recommend for fx 30 that cover all can go all in been saving for years so best lenses. Thank you for your insight.
great video, I was looking at the FX30 but I am going for the FX3.. I keep hearing that people are upgrading to the FX3 so it makes sense. is there 2 different sony alpha fx3? Sony alpha ILME-FX3 and Sony alpha FX-3 what are the difference? Or is it the way they listed? Please let me know, 6 months ago I bought the Sony A7r IV, and someone said I should upgrade... But I'm ok with it, I moved up from Nikon D7500..
@@KofiYeboah I am going to buy it from Amazon, there is no actual camera stores around to speak to anyone. I could order it today and get it tomorrow. Thanks for the info!
I''m very close to being able to make some camera upgrades, and I've been sold on the FX6 as my A cam for a very long time, but I have been torn about the FX3 vs the FX30 for my B Cam. The FX3 has the same size sensor as the FX6, which makes things easier in terms of image matching and color science to a degree. The FX30 is only marginally worse than the FX3, so it's not a huge deal. It seems like I can save quite a bit of money if I go with the FX30 and FX6 combo, but the FX3 and FX6 combo makes things simpler IMO. Any advice at all?
Good video, but you're using the term "depth of field" incorrectly. 'Depth of field' is the amount of the frame that is in focus from the closest to farthest subjects in the frame. Shallow depth of field = less of the frame in focus. Greater depth of field = more of the frame in focus. Full frame has LESS depth of field at a given focal length, and aperture, as compared to a crop sensor. The smaller the sensor, the GREATER the depth of field.
I'm not an expert or even an amateur, but I can tell the skin tone and hair color looks better on the FX3 at 2:15, but yes, everything else looks the same.
Great Video on these great cameras. Sony Science is great I own a SONY F35 CineAlta, and the image is amazing and the FX series cameras match pretty good against the F35. Both cameras FX30 and FX3 produces amazing footage. I have PL lenses for my F35, my RED ONE MX and my PL Modified Canon 7D by FVG. I also have a Canon 7D great documentary camera, and a Canon 1DC 4K. and 2 Red Hydrogens, plus my iPhone 13 Ultra. Yes I'm a lazy Director.Cinematographer. Having my first "Film" Camera in 1970 up to the 2011 when I finally made the leap from Film to Digital. So I went crazy with all this tech stuff. If you want a great look with glass, by the old pre 1986 manual focus lenses from Nikon, the Nikkors. Thats why Red when they first came out they offered two mounts PL and Nikon. Why the pre 86? The glass was made with lead, and the colors are amazing . Keep shooting.
Great video man. Im a sports videographer and am looking to upgrade from the a7iii almost solely to get 4k120 capabilities to produce better content for social media. I really think the fx30 is a great choice for me, especially since the crop will give me more range if anything on the sidelines. Thoughts?
Ohhhhh, I was thinking I must have seen you somewhere because your voice hear familiar, then I see Tennyson appear in this video... Bingo! +1 sub my man. You did a great job on his channel and now on your own channel too. Looking forward to more content.
Wish that the fx30 had 6K open gate. If it did, I would probably buy two of them. As for the "better depth of field and better low light," performance of full frame, that really only comes in to play if you are shooting wide open on full frame, which for me is almost never.
@@KNAPPAID It would be pretty awesome if they did. I am kind of in a quandry about whether to stick with Panasonic and get an S5IIX (to go along with my S1 and S5), as I would like to have B or C cams that can record 6K for extended periods of time.
@@marinrealestatephotography turns out im wrong , the xh2s uses a stacked 26mp sensor , the fx30 doesnt I got it confused Also , i were you - id get the s5iix , its a fullframe ( while i dont usually mimce meat of apsc , theyre both at close proximity in price )
Hi, I didn’t understand when you said at 9.54 : the FX3 will get better light performance something like Aps-c. So if I have an Aps-c camera like the Sony 6300 I should get the FX3 to have same low light perf? I film a lot of concerts with the 6300 so I’m looking for a new better small camera but the other issue is the lenses..all my lenses that goes to the 6300 won’t work on the FX3, so then I should get the FX30? I didn’t understand the cropping situation..if I put my SEL10-18 on the FX30 if won’t be a real 10-18? And even if the FX30 is less good in low light than the FX3, would is still be better or as good as my 6300? I hope you can answers to all questions :)
I am very much still debating between getting FX30 or ZV-E1 as my B-cam. I sometimes struggle with low light even with 24mm F1.4 GM on my a7IV. However I generally don't shoot a single clip that is longer then 5mins unless company event with talking heads. I only do a 10-15seconds b-roll clips while travel or outing. What's your suggestion?
Similar boat. For my gear cabinet at the moment makes sense to sell the FX3. The FX6 is my A-Cam choice. When I have smaller gigs or need to go hybrid I have the A7RV - its IBIS is great and image oversampling from the 8K sensor has been a really nice. Right now the FX30 is a great option would be a great replacement for B/C cam for long takes.
I am rocking a Sony A7SIII and a FX30. You gotta be very very carefull with your Highlight rollof but otherwise they match pretty good. The lowlight Footage is pretty good if you use something like neat Video because the noise is pretty workable. Whats pretty interesting is, if i pick a camera fast to do and try some stuff it is 90% the FX30 lol i dont know why. The FX30 is a great B Camera for Inteviews or for Gimbal work. I dont get this FF Hype, that is photographers boner BS since the most award winning movies were shot on S35 / APSC or 4/3 so whats the deal
You might pick the FX30 for fast experiments and stuff because it's less expensive - at least that's what I do sometimes. I'm secretly afraid of wear and tear on my more expensive gear almost making me use it less than I really should.
Team FX30 because my bank account says so
The realism 👌🏾👌🏾
@@KofiYeboah Haha, gotta be real. Although the FX30 is amazing, don’t get me wrong!
@@gryzmedia it is 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 I’ve had a ton of fun with it
Its more than good enough. To me more expensive cameras are not justified antil you make real money with it.
Same bro 😂😂😂
I’m just on the boat that there’s nothing THAT wrong with apsc and the fx30 is great and can still be used in a majority of situations 🙏🏾
But you can use crop mode on a full frame sensor to get what you can get with an APSC, no?
@@AexoeroVdepends on the camera.
Being 12MP, the FX3 can only use the Super35 crop in 1080p whereas higher megapixel cameras like the A7 III/A7 IV etc can do S35 in 4K too.
@@AexoeroVyes. It makes no sense to volunteerily choose an apsc over the full frame
Ahah I tend to save the rambling til the end 😂
I gathered more real world scenario info in 10mins from this video than others out there. 🔥💯 Thanks kofi!
Thanks homie ! Appreciate you 🙏🏾
I think 99% of the people who sit and complain over the fx30’s crop sensor in various comment sections don’t even require a camera as powerful as the fx30 let alone the fx3!
Just the comment ive been looking for, thanks
Thank you 🙏🏼 can I please get one ☝️

Haha
I’ve been found 🫡🤣
Not necessarily “better depth of field”, but rather “more shallow depth of field”. 😊 Great comparison 👍
There ya go :) glad I can help
Thanks for this video, I'm just now starting out getting into filmmaking I think I'm going to go with the FX30 as my entry point as a director and overall as a filmmaker.
I have paired the FX30 with the GM 24mm F1.4 for the third two person shot in my video podcast set up. The guest gets the luxury of the FX6/GM 50mm F1.2 and as host I get the A7S3/Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8
That’s a dope setup 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Totally agree, I picked up the FX-30 for a B-cam/gimbal cam and it’s perfect for that.
Absolute facts 💯💯
FX30 honestly is a great option as a b or c camera; I plan on getting one to add my line up just for weddings or for a c cam for other multi cam shoots since it's so affordable compared to other cameras in that range; it's crazy how good the fx30 is though for the price compared to the Sony a7iii which doesn't even begin to hold up in quality/color (at least in slog3) due to it only shooting in 8 bit vs the 10 bit you can pull from fx30, Sony a7iv and others
With the right lights , grading etc you’re golden here!
Tried out both and honestly prefer the FX30. Even filming at blue hour, ISO 3200 is more than enough with the introduction of a little bit of subtle, extra light sources.
I like it a lot man I use it all the time !

Another point for the FX30. For the same features (OSS, electrical zoom, F/4)
On FF : 24-135 G OSS F/4 - 1215 g, 2500 €
On APS-C : 18-105 G OSS F/4 - 427 g, 550 €
.. And the IQ in good light conditions is better on the FX30 because it's 6K downsized in 4K. I think for someone who has the FX6 there is no reason to get the FX3 or the A7Sxxx
It's time for the old 12 MP FF sensor to retire :)
You are correct sir 👍🏾
Im in doubt to add a fx30 or fx3 to our kit. But ur saying go with the fx30 instead of the fx3 if you already own a fx6 as an A cam?
Excellent and very balanced comparison of both flagship cameras. Thank you
Thank you 🙏🏾
Team FX30 + A6700, but I’m wondering if I should add a FX3 to my setup or maybe two FX30 for multi cameras recordings…
Well the a6700 has the same sensor so it’s up to your preferences!

FX30 + FX6 best combo! 🙌
I love it 🙌🏾🙌🏾
The difference of opinion stems from Sony's super refined market segmentation of each camera now. Each one suits a particular segment really well, like this FX30 for pro b-cam. Those not in that category might either find it an overkill or inadequate, but for those whose need it serves, it is really good. So sony definitely knows what it's doing, while Canon cameras are rather similar to each other.
They literally have a camera for everyone
FX30 is the way if you want cinematography without Hollywood budget. More variety of lenses and a lot friendlier with affordable anamorphics
With the FX3, you can use the super 35 mode and still get that crop. You can even use APSC lenses on the FX3.
You can shoot in crop mode only in HD not in 4k
Not in 4k... just in FHD
In 4K there’s clear image zoom mode to crop to APSC

I’ve been avoiding this video because I wanted the FX3 just because of full frame but I needed more info so now that I got this from you.. well, Kofi you sold me. I am joining the FX30 Boiz. As an FX30 Owner I can tell you now, the man makes the camera the camera does not make the man. Will I own an FX3? One Day Yes, but by that time comes there will be an FX3 MII lol
Talkin straight facts 💯💯💯
Plus, I really dont notice that 1 stop less of dynamic range at all (like you mentioned)
Also to note that I think you forgot to mention (but you did in other videos) - the FX30 is a 6k sensor, not 4k, then downscaled to 4k as its output file.
I'm always saying that APS-C isn't dead and has a time and place! Great seeing other content creators saying the same thing :)
Yeh man it’s still great !
We've been getting ready to grab the FX30 and use it for some wildlife videography... A S35 camera plus our Sony 200-600mm becomes a 300-900mm instantly.. and at 4k 120 that would be a 450-1300mm! Think it should complement the A7iv we have nicely.
They’re not super far off each other so you’re probably in the clear
Thanks for the video. I have the FX3 and your detailed explanation was spot on.
Ayy happy that helped !
Another thing to be mentioned is that fx30 with 6K sensor gives you the sharpest footage in 24, 30 and 60fps among Fx3 and fx6 when the light condition is well set, which is great. It's nice to have a look different from the previous camera.
And it’s actually really clutch 🙏🏾
I own the FX3 but will be buying the FX30 for a b-cam. Great video, sir.
I’m doing thr reverse and looking at grabbing an FX3 to add in 😅
@@KofiYeboah Best of luck, my friend. I’ve been doing a ton of research this time, unlike almost ALL of my prior purchases. I feel confident this is going to be a killer combo.

For me it was actually stills that kept me from the FX3. I'm mostly video, but when I do shoot stills 12MP isn't going to do it. I even sold all my full-frame lenses to go back to APS-C. I was planning to buy an A7IV before the FX30 came out.
That’s why I keep my a7iv , I almost sell it, then get like $5-7k in photo gigs a year
You can actually use APS-C lenses on the FX3 by using clear image zoom at 1.5 😉
I'm not on Team Sony, but my primary camera is the BMPCC 6k g2, which is a s35 sensor and it's fantastic.
I used BM cameras for a while and loved it !! And that’s what I’ve been saying, lights will solve most issues !
Also thanks 😊
I'm coming from a blackmagic 6k should I get the fx30 or fx3?
As a wedding videographer I have a A7sIII and a FX3, as a C-cam thinking about getting a FX30, what is your input? In fact I'm planning to sell my Sony a6500 that has many apsc lenses that I could use on FX30... sony fan boy! Thank you for your great content!
The fx30 is brilliant. I honestly think when not in low light you pretty much can't tell the difference between the 3 and 30. Especially if you already have some APSC glass from your a6500 (fx30 would be a huge upgrade from a6500 as a C cam for sure).
Full frame or super 35 the best choice, no doubt.
Amazing content and format man! Thank you for all this info. Super helpful!

This is why I got a zv e1
Yah no it’s really not a stills camera 😂

I’m switching over from Nikon which when it comes to mirrorless except for the z9 (kinda) they are good but… that’s my bigger gripe, the way I see it if I’m spending 2k and I’m going to be face by shortcomings I might as well go for the FX3. With that said, the FX30 it’s half the price and something that should seriously be considered. One more thing to consider is that the FX3 is a few years old and at some point Sony its going to upgrade it (who knows). In the end, it’s not an easy decision as it seems 😂

i have a MacBook Pro 16- in (M2 Max, 2023) . . . if i was to use the CFexpress Type A 160GB Memory Card, with the Sony FX30 Camera, would i need a USB-C adapter to get files off the memory card, onto the MacBook Pro 16- in (M2 Max, 2023) ?
It holds up real well 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The 7artisans and ttartisan lenses usually have a lower t stop , probably around 1.2 or 1.3
Which do you think would be better to live stream sports with? 1080p
Technically the fx30 does it easier than the fx3
Glad I can be a signal of hope in your camera buying journey ! Honestly you’ll love it man 🫡🫡
Bro im legit over the buy now button myself 😅😅 What did you do? Did you go for it? Was it worth it? What are you thinking? 😂
@@dcmenow I did buy it. I think it’s a great camera and I’m stoked with what it can do, but less than a month after I bought it, Sony came out with a camera that does almost everything the fx30 does for $400 less. The a6700 might be a better option for you. Here are the notable differences that I can note between the two:
- the fx30 has a more robust, more durable body design, but it is a little bigger and weighs a tiny bit more.
Apart from that?

I am on the fence about the FX3 - I already own a Sony A7IV as main camera and would very much want to stay in the Sony ecosystem. ( tons of lenses and even recently bought my first Cine lens ) The only concern is will Sony release an updated FX4 / FX3 Mark II / A soon 👀 -
Who knows !
Not only the FX3 has more dynamic range, much better low light performance, shallower depth of field, the rolling shutter is incomparably better also.
There’s a massive difference in price tag for a reason.
I guess , $2000 more ? I unno imho 😅
Finally a No BS REVIEW - thank you - ✊🏽✊🏽
You’re welcome !
Amazing video! 🙏
Thank you 🙏
Man your so good and make things so simple to understand. I wish you can assist us with out Church video setup.
Oh thanks !!
Great video Kofi. New subscriber and great content. Literally deciding this week between both. The link for the comparison video doesn't pop up for me. Any chance of linking or saying which video it is on your channel? Thanks!
Yeah it was weird my cards don’t pop up, adding now !
This is such a helpful video ! Thank you!
Appreciate it 👍🫡🫡
Excellent video mate. Very informative. Tryna decide between the FX30 and Fujifilm xH2s. Mayyybeeee leaning FX30. Tough one but your vid helps thanks.
You’re welcome !
Thanks man I appreciate your work!!
Glad to help!
I think if it’s in the fx line, you’re golden !
B OR C CAM who says? U can use it for full feature length to any kind of movie\film as an A CAM
Sure
I disagree with you that the sensor size make a difference in image quality- think about the pocket cinema cameras, either s35 or mft sensor they produce an overall better image quality than the fx3 but that’s just my 2 cents
To each their own !
@@KofiYeboah absolutely man - imagine a world with just 1 camera company - everybody filming on the same damn thing wouldn‘t be good either! 🙏🏽👊🏽
@@SebastianFriedrichVisuals it would be so boring 😂😂
Hey m still on a oldskool canon 90D boat but ready to go with sony now with fx30 most of my work is short film making and documentary shoot what sony lenses would you recommend for fx 30 that cover all can go all in been saving for years so best lenses. Thank you for your insight.
I have a lens video coming soon actually 🤌🏾😁
great video, I was looking at the FX30 but I am going for the FX3..
The FX only has one version !
If you have the bread, make the sandwich
for movie making, which one is better?
Both
Is the fx3 better? Yes, no doubt. However, I’m just making UA-cam videos so my fx30 is perfect and does more than I need it to.
That’s what I’m saying !
Awesome! Thanks
I'm not an expert or even an amateur, but I can tell the skin tone and hair color looks better on the FX3 at 2:15, but yes, everything else looks the same.
not biggest sensor catches more light, its size of pixel making it
Great Video on these great cameras.
I’ve heard some great things about the Nikkors !!
Great video man. Im a sports videographer and am looking to upgrade from the a7iii almost solely to get 4k120 capabilities to produce better content for social media. I really think the fx30 is a great choice for me, especially since the crop will give me more range if anything on the sidelines. Thoughts?
Lead with thy wallet 👍🏾
Ohhhhh, I was thinking I must have seen you somewhere because your voice hear familiar, then I see Tennyson appear in this video... Bingo!
+1 sub my man.
You did a great job on his channel and now on your own channel too. Looking forward to more content.
Yessir !!
Thank you 🙏🏾
Wish that the fx30 had 6K open gate. If it did, I would probably buy two of them. As for the "better depth of field and better low light," performance of full frame, that really only comes in to play if you are shooting wide open on full frame, which for me is almost never.
That’s a really good point !!☺️
Theres been rumblings of opengate and the xh2s which shares the sensor also use opengate - so its up to sony to implement it
@@KNAPPAID It would be pretty awesome if they did. I am kind of in a quandry about whether to stick with Panasonic and get an S5IIX (to go along with my S1 and S5), as I would like to have B or C cams that can record 6K for extended periods of time.
@@marinrealestatephotography turns out im wrong , the xh2s uses a stacked 26mp sensor , the fx30 doesnt
I got it confused
Also , i were you - id get the s5iix , its a fullframe ( while i dont usually mimce meat of apsc , theyre both at close proximity in price )
@@KNAPPAID Yeah, the S5IIX costs $2,600 with a two-lens bundle (50mm and 85mm f/1.8 primes, or sub out one for the 20-60). Hard to resist.
Great video man

If I have a RED Komodo , which of these cameras would pair better with it ? Thoughts? Advice?
Either really
Great content, brother. 🤜🤛
Thanks !!!
Kofi what are your thoughts about the 6K downsampling on the FX-30 and its implications.
I think it’s great !
I haven’t used a zv e1 so it’s hard to say , 😅
@@KofiYeboah thanks for replying mate ☺️ all good ~ all good
Similar boat. For my gear cabinet at the moment makes sense to sell the FX3. The FX6 is my A-Cam choice. When I have smaller gigs or need to go hybrid I have the A7RV - its IBIS is great and image oversampling from the 8K sensor has been a really nice. Right now the FX30 is a great option would be a great replacement for B/C cam for long takes.
buying an extra lens might be cheaper than spending 2k on the fx3 though
Facts ! I use a glimmerglass all the time. So I always have a decent look in the highlights , I love
The fx30 really!
You might pick the FX30 for fast experiments and stuff because it's less expensive - at least that's what I do sometimes. I'm secretly afraid of wear and tear on my more expensive gear almost making me use it less than I really should.
Does FX30 output lut over hdmi?
