I found that adjusting the valves to .007 and .011 got rid of any "tap tap tap' noise and it doesn't hurt the valves at all. Also don't over tighten the valve cover because that will make the rocker arms it is attached to lift up which will increase the valve clearance. (dumb design on Toyota's part). Replace that short oil filter with a Purolator PL20195 which is the same diameter but longer so it has better filtration. Don't forget to clean that throttle body (best to take it off so you can clean both sides of it), check the TPS and replace if out of spec and also the AFM. Having a proper operating TPS and AFM is the key to a good running engine.

I just got lucky and found a 1985 Toyota Hilux with the 22R carbureted engine. Running smooth and not in such bad shape. I'm really stoked. I have been told that these engines are indestructible, I have been watching videos non-stop on these engines so I can learn how to work on them and keep it alive and in good running conditions for another 30 years lol. Thank you for your video. Every video helps.

To get TDC I put it in 4th or 5th gear and just push the car back and forth. This uses the driveline to turn the crankshaft without having to get a wrench on it. Nice video!

Where did you get all those aftermarket suspension parts ? I took the starter motor out to change the fuel filter on a 89 22RE. I the oil change is such a mess on those. I buy gloves and use a milk jug with the bottom cut off as a funnel. I rehearse the moment when that drain plug unscrews

Some people have soaked their valve cover gasket in 303 Protectant overnight . Wipe off excess with microfiber towel and install .

Regarding the mobile one I think that’s what I saw you put in that 22 RE is that what you used since the new rebuild. Personally I think the conventional like Castro 10W-30 is best for these older engines. I have driven my 1988 Toyota pick up 22RE automatic for 22 years now. I made the mistake of not replacing a leaky radiator forgot to check it.went to town got seriously hot and blue a head gasket rebuilt The entire engine timing chain everything redone new rings crank turned anyway try never to let these engines get extremely hot almost guaranteed blow a head gasket

I rarely comment on videos, but I wanted to say:
I really appreciate your effort videography wise, clean audio, attention to detail, and no BS/rambling. I just picked up a really cool '89 Toyota/Gulfstream motorhome. It's called the Conquest, 22RE & 1-ton dually, fully loaded up with my gear and about to carry me across the country! ... Just as soon as I finish fixing a busted radiator hose, my brake booster suddenly failing from a possible vacuum leak, replacing the alternator after the lower radiator hose/power steering pump shat a bunch of fluids & fried it.
Oh, and a new deep cycle battery... 🙄😅
Anything I can do to save maintenance down the road while I'm already bleeding and turning wrenches, I'm all ears. 🌽
I will be saving this video for future reference.
    Cheers! 👋🙂

@@tuckernorris7479 As an update to the 4Runner, I tore the transmission complete apart in this video: ua-cam.com/video/hfXOetLhW0c/v-deo.html . Now I plan to buy a rebuild kit and get it all back together. Once that's done, the 4Runner should be back on the road. 👍

awesome videos, have 97 fzj80, but have an opportunity to get a 1985 22re xcab but needs tons of work, price is 4k. not running, no rust, missing lots of glass, hood, lights, interior is destroyed. but it was a dealer truck, never sold and less than 400 miles but it has been sitting since 1987, car fax only has 1 thing, shipped to dealer. never registered. I am thinking create a back to the future replica. what do you think?

I bought the truck with the engine freshly rebuilt, immediately cut off all the suspension, straight axled it, and turned it into what you see here! Lol. So I actually didn't rebuild the engine, but I have the receipts. The head bolts were from LCE. You shouldn't reuse them. Part number 1024063
