    I have lived in Bangalore for 4 years and one thing i learned is that, every time i try to speak Kannada, they have so much love and respect for me. Even if i am able to speak properly or not it does not matter. If i am at least "trying" to speak, that itself is having so much impact. So this shows the locals in Karnataka are very nice and respectable people.

    Most people from North India have the tendency to be rude towards locals because of their general tone. Also they expect locals to know Hindi by default. South Indians are normally soft spoken and reserved. This sets up the stage for the conflict. And new comer to this city must make an effort to be extra polite with the locals to test the waters.

Whole South India is a wonderful place - much better than North or East India. U Hindi speakers expect others to know ur language but u don't want to learn Tamil or Kannada!! This is very bad. I welcome Hindu rashtra and reject Hindi rashtra. UP, Biharis are best for IAS IPS but lots of south Indian scientists in ISRO. So north Indian mindset is different. As much as I have deep respect for learning a State's language when residing in that state (or at least making efforts with basic linguistics), the comments section is a bit biased. I've lived in Bengaluru for quite a while and have learnt basic Kannada. As a matter of fact, I work with Government bodies and people from villages outside Bengaluru, within Karnataka and have learnt multiple dialects, in broken Kannada. Being a native of Goa, Hindi is neither our mother tongue, and is mostly considered a joke because of how our dialects land up convoluting our diction and linguistics.
    However, on multiple instances of meeting Kannadigas in Bengaluru, and Kannadigas visiting Goa, I'm often privy to the conversation of "Why do you not have Kannada as Goa's primary language? Speak Kannada in Goa".
    So this is more than just a problem of Hindi imposition, but rather linguistic chauvinism disregarding any other culture. Doesn't work.

    Frankly, what the Bengalurean expected at a bare minimum was a modicum of respect for the language and the way of life of the locals. The Bengalurean would have been fine even if the migrants did not learn the local language, as long as there was respect. In the early 2000s and to some extent even now, a lot of "superiority complex" was observed, and that is what has led to problems. To be very clear - there is a difference between saying, "Sorry sir, I do not know Kannada, can you speak in English or Hindi please", and "Hindi is the national language, why don't you guys speak it"?
    Bengalureans were never langauge fanatics. The stereotype of Bengaluru as "svalpa hondukondu hogi" is actually quite accurate - if you give respect and don't say nonsense like "yahan ke log Hindi nahi bolte" or "yaar, we don't even get good alu poori here, in my Meerut/Itarsi/Udaipur it is not like this".. just don't say such shit and you will be fine. Luckily, with increasing internet penetration and knowledge, more people are getting the memo.
    However, I must reiterate that Bengalureans are practical and adjusting, and no one will ever demand you to learn the language, so long as you are respectful and have a clear understanding that the locals are accommodating you and that the locals are not obliged to serve you in Hindi. If the locals serve you in Hindi, it is their goodness and as they say in Hindi, the "badhappan" of the locals. Don't speak of "national language" etc. and put people's backs up.
    In over two decades Bengaluru has seen significant change. While the localite might wistfully think back to the days when Bengaluru was cooler and greener and there were no traffic jams, we might reminisce about the times when life was unhurried and simple, we might nostalgically look back at the time when we did not have crowds, pollution and road rage, and we might even fantasize about a time long-gone-by, when it could be assumed that almost everyone in the city would know Kannada, this sense of pining has lead to anguish and frustration as they live to see all this crumble before their eyes.
    I recall a rant by Professor C.N.R Rao back in 2008/9 where he said, "if IT takes away Bangalore's values, burn IT". For him, his by-2 kaapi and masala dose in Vidyarthi bhavana is probably paramount.
    With a backdrop like this, perhaps, if one is facing discrimination now, it's only because of the behavior by earlier expatriates.
    This situation almost prompltly, reminds me of a short poem I read that appeared anonymously in an early issue of the St. Nicholas Magazine from 1876:
    "Oho!" said the pot to the kettle;
    "You are dirty and ugly and black!
    Sure no one would think you were metal,
    Except when you're given a crack."
    "Not so! not so!" kettle said to the pot;
    "'Tis your own dirty image you see;
    For I am so clean - without blemish or blot -
    That your blackness is mirrored in me."
    This, I'm convinced accurately potrayss what the relation between migrants in Bengaluru and the locals has been for decades now. The Pot, obviously, the expatriate and the kettle, the local.

    Paris/NewYork/London these are cosmopolitan global cities too but do you ask them also to speak in Hindi? And criticise if they don’t?
    You either at least try few phrases from English/French for your survival.
    We have problem with that mindset.
    If tomorrow 10,000 Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannadigas, Mallus, Gujarathi each comes to Delhi-NCR, UP, Bihar and speaks in Tamil, Marathi, Telagu, Kannad, Gujrathi and so on then your North Indian Rikshaw Wala , Subzi Wala will understand what we are saying?? They will get angry and insult us right?
    Ultimately we also Indian and contributes more in taxes than Hindi belt then why you enforces Hindi and make it issue when you travels to non Hindi belt?
    Be it any non Hindi belt Indian when he travels to Delhi-NCR and other Hindi states he speaks in either fluent Hindi or broken Hindi or use English directly if people or surrounding understands it.

      That goes to central govt. central govt on portion of state population distributes that tax to states. That also means, If Western and South Indian states contributing 1000 Rs to central govt in term of tax. Then in return they will receive 700, 750, 800, 500 Rs in return subject with there comparitive low population equation.
      However north Indian states like UP, Bihar getting more than giving taxes to federal government. Like if they contribute 600-500 mainly then just bcoz there massive population they receives grants of 1000, 1500. When no foreign bank gives loan to these states central govt gives guarantee and takes that portion of expenses also obviously from money they are receiving from wealth states.

    हिन्दी किसी प्रदेश या राज्य की भाषा नही है। हर राज्य की अपनी भाषा है। हिंदी वो भाषा है जो 28 राज्यों को एक करने का प्रयास करती है। ताकि देश बेहतर तरीके से काम कर सके तथा देश की उन्नति हो तो माथा फोड़ी करने से पहले विषय का बेहतर तरीके से अध्ययन करना काफी आवश्यक होता है।

      @@saktiprasadswain6546 I'm a Bengali, not a momota khepa, i speak Hindi to people who speak Hindi, Bengali with native people. I do not hold any prejudice for any language because India is singular and United. Netaji and Khudiram did not sacrifice their lives for separatists like you. I know how to remain Bengali and maintain my culture, while welcoming my fellow countrymen. Bhashar chape ghenna kora bangali culture noye. 🙏🏻
      And I'd love to keep Sanskrit as my national language for Bharat. Hindi is polluted by Mughals, but i don't hate it. I know the language that's it, my love for my country and countrymen will not fade anyways.

    😂😂 people are happy with English but they didn't want to speak in Hindi . India has a huge population and 400+ languages local and regional languages...so there should be a common language with whom people can interact easily and Hindi is best option because 80 percent of our population understand Hindi.

    Problem yeh hai ki bahar say aakar locals ko substandard prove karna chatay hai. Same issue hay north east kay logon kay saath. Woh bhi pehle vidishay ki tarah behave kartey hay. Saarey desh may kahin bhi raho , bun jao local bhasha , bhojan , sanskriti kay saath. Sab sahi hai phir.
