It came from a time when there was no casual wear, as we know it, browns and tweeds were considered casual. This was when certain jackets were termed 'sports'. Gentlemen wore morning suit (white tie) before lunch. Take a look at cricket sports-wear and you have the idea.
It was a English derived classist/elitist part of old status quo that distinguished between working class/non- city folk from white collar/city folk class - if you wore brown up-town (back then) you were a farmer/factory worker
Personally, I think a beige (for warm weather) or dark brown (for cold weather) would look much better on you than that brown does. That brown is too similar to your complexion. Beige is too similar to my complexion. So dark brown (cold weather) and that light brown (warm weather) would be the choices for me.
