Really disappointed by the commentary from the Melbournian guest chef. Melbourne's Chinatown is very authentic- it's the longest continuous Chinese settlement in the Western World and the 3rd oldest Chinatown in the world... it's built around food, history and culture, and not on tourism. Also, not to tell people to eat a South Melbourne Dim Sim (Dim Sims are a Melbourne invention with a long history and are almost as prized as Meat Pies), eat Dumplings in Chinatown (Hutong, Shanghai Village) and to make sure they enjoy a Meat Pie from Prince's Pies when asked about essential food adventures? Shameful. Maybe he was camera shy or too drunk to function?
Mmmm, I think it depends on who you talk to. Ross is a good friend of mine, and the kinds of places we like to hang out at (as hospitality professionals, hence 'hospo spot') are generally a bit more niche than what the general public are into. Chinatown is great, but I think Ross was hedging his bets on calling it 'authentic', when you can get much better Chinese food in outer suburbs like Doncaster and Preston. South Melbourne dim sims are also a bit of a gimmick, too, as fabulously indulgent as they are. Also, as a fellow Asian-Australian, meat pies just aren't... really top of our food recommendation list. To each their own. (As for the drinking: yeah. We work in restaurants. We like to get on the piss. So sue us.)
Have to agree regarding commentary, it was terrible, could've done much better with someone else maybe. His responses to Erwan was so vague and didnt really answer anything...He didn't share much, still feel maybe someone else could have shone more light on the great stuff Melb has to offer.
@@glyphsandclutter I don't care where you're from, you can't call yourself Australian if you actively discourage or completely ignore the meat pie as an essential Aussie flavour. I'm Italian-Australian and found his comments to be weirdly out-of-touch with reality, and rather pretentious. No one is doubting that Chinatown isn't quite "authentic" but imagine saying that to some of the families that have owned restaurants there for generations. Sure, not authentic "Chinese", but the restaurants there are authentic Chinese-Australian food, which is important given the very notion and existence of Chinatown is reflective of the Chinese people's integration and contribution to society. Lygon Street, Carlton has average Italian food aimed at tourists but I'd reluctantly still recommend it simply for the experience, with a cautious "but" at the end whilst pointing people in the right direction for true Italian cuisine. Also the Dimsim and in particular the South Melbourne dim sim is another important culturally significant culinary item that has history drenched in Chinese-Australia culture. The creator was looking for ways to "commercialise" the dumpling and sell it at football matches. In many ways, it helped introduce Chinese cuisiane to what was at the time a very Anglo-centric cuisine and culture. It's no more a gimmick then, say, Domino's Pizza.
@@fenixbazaar9001 Raised in the Western Surburbs since I was 3 and went to high school in the city. i have never in 30 years heard mates go on about pies. It's dead set just a boring pie, we only ever got them from servo's. That being said PieFace rocks but if i was a guide i wouldn't be taking ANYONE for pies unless they themselves asked for it.
It is a really interesting question though because Melbourne is SO diverse and that’s what our food is about. Food is everything, and we love trying new stuff and expanding our palettes and experimenting. Melbourne can’t be labelled.
You guys should also try Aangan for Indian food, Jinda Thai for thai, +39 Pizzeria (just across tipo 00), Maedaya for Japanese food. Ugh, so much good food here in Melbourne! 🙌🏼
I am glad you did the "Greek precinct", or what is left of it, yet I feel that you needed to mention more about the Greek community, as you did the Italian and Chinese communities. Melbourne has the single largest Greek community outside of Greece (Yes, more than Toronoto, London, New York, Chicago) at around 250,000 people. Also, the main heart of Greek food, cafes, and general life is Oakleigh, a bit before the suburb of Dandenong you went to. I highly recommend a visit next time you come to Melbourne. Anyway, I enjoy your videos and well done man! :)
I find myself thinking that your guest underestimated Chinatown. Little Bourke Street (where Chinatown is located) is very historic and there are some totally amazing restaurants there. As far as meat pies go, the quality is highly variable, some brilliant, some diabolical, so awful I would literally prefer to eat raw shredded carrots and tinned cannoli beans! Thank you for the video!
You went to Stalactites for breakfast! That’s hilarious. Absolute institution. That’s my Achilles Heel guilty pleasure but it’s more like 2am post-big night out breakfast. It’s open 24hrs!!! Better souvlakis than in Greece!
Food is life wherever you Go 😋 #NotifSquad I'm late haha coz its Sunday 😄 Church time ☺ ) aside on what you eat I like about is your speaking voice 😍 love it ☺
Late lunch at an all you can eat buffet restaurant earlier and even though my tummy's so full I still feel the crave rising thru this video. You always give us satisfying food porn contents chef. Good to know that Melbourne has many selections of global cuisines. 😋

Probably the comment about Chinatown was not helpful. Chinese immigrants first came to Melbourne in the 1850s and settled in that area. They have been here so long that they have integrated and spread out so that is why it appears touristy. Box Hill is more the area for more recent migrants- some great food there too. I suggest a bit of online research about the areas you go to would help. chinatownmelbourne.com.au/about-chinatown/
