I've always used synthetic and I use 5w30 instead of 5w20. My wife had basically the same 2.4 in her previous car which was a Kia Sportage and we sold it with almost 200k on the odomoter and the engine ran perfectly. I had to replace the valve cover seal/gasket and it was still clean in there (no sludge). I also change the oil around 5000 or sooner...i think I have her warning set to 4500 so when whe tells me it went off I know I've got a couple weeks to get it done.
After the 5 qt. I splash it up to the top with dura lube.
