24:50 Other direction. Above normal human vision is IR, below it is UV. The normal vision range is 400-700nm. Post 700nm is the IR range, below 400nm is the UV range.

I also have a rangefinder that links to the scope, which makes shooting a little like a game. I enter a little information (wind speed) and it provides a shooting solution. And does it in less than a second. It's great for daylight or night. It came with an IR "flashlight" but it's a little weak. A stronger one is my next purchase. Being in Utah, I need to look up the class Colion came for... And Colion said he's fallen down the rabbit hole. I think someone pushed him.
Night vision (image intensification) has an expiration date/life cycle. NVG/NVD require maintenance to recharge and/or replace the photocathode. They are also susceptible to damage from bright/daylight. Thermals are a sensitive camcorder.
Thanks very much for info on night vision goggles. Very interesting.Very detailed from detection+ intensification to red lasers only you can see to white phosphorus. I'm like you Colin think I'd need help buying one with fuel tubes but the training and care for such advance night vision is very interesting.
I always struggled with NOD's when I was in. It's so hard figuring out depth of perception and identifying things. Besides that, they're fun to play with.
He actually talked pretty candidly about the limitations and down-sides. That's pretty rare. This was a good public service, CN. The physical conditioning, training, and costs of TACTICAL NV are cost prohibitive. The chronic neck injuries are almost unavoidable. The presbyopia sets in early and stronger. Nobody talks about this stuff, but everybody wants to "see in the dark." Hints for civilians: a chem light kicks out very useful ambient light when tossed into a dark room, the back yard, etc. They're $1 each and light as a feather. P.S. Yes, they make IR chem lights. They cost more than $1 each. You know how to defeat state of the art NV? Light switches and big fires. Work every time.
If one can get a system that has both thermal and white phosphorus imaging for identifying then that would definitely be the way to go. Follow the acronym DIDD Detect, Identify(id) Decide. Using thermal for detection, spot target, switch to imaging for ID, decide friend or foe.
I see everything with my thermals, from deer to rabbits. I let my dogs run loose on my property and I can see them clearly on 'white hot' without an issue. Now walking with thermals, watch out for the stump, you will break an ankle with thermals that arent hybrids. But yeah, there a lot of things that can defeat thermals.
44:47 This is why SWIR is probably the future of night vision. The spectral response for uncooled InGaAs Short Wave Infrared Cameras sits around 700nm to 1400nm. This is covering the gap between Intensifier tubes which go up to 900+ nm and thermal which sits between 8000nm and 14000nm. SWIR cameras can see a completely different spectrum to NV even reaching into thermal territory with features like seeing through smoke, haze and fog while still being able to look through glass unlike a thermal device because it still works with reflected light rather than emitted heat
And NODs are most effective (out far) detecting movement.. as stated, got to get a lot closer to PID. I’ve had experience with slow movements getting extremely close to someone with PVS 14s without being detected
I had some brief training with it in 1979. (thanks to a rich uncle) A lot has changed since then. I still have too many priorities ahead of this, but it's still on my list. Just going to be a few years.
How many years have you been saying a few more years though? I know There's so much on my list and I'm adding more every day lol. It's expensive but its an irreplaceable asset.
Image intensifiers are half the cost, and easy to destroy if you expose it to daylight. Thermal scopes are great at seeing animals in the dark and from light into darker areas like during the day ...but don't see through glass.
Its more then just a monocular. To be effective with the NVGs hours and days of training. Thousands of rounds, suppressor, then IR laser. A $3000 PVS 14 will end up being $7000-9000 at the end to be effective.
Chip said don’t keep nvgs in pelican cases. But what about the hard cases the pvs 7s and 14s come in? Like the ones built for the military. Does the air release valve do anything to help?
Night vision has some advantages and thermal has its advantages. There disadvantages are clear if you served in the military. Civilian models are the same as military expensive. You pay to play in the dark! I prefer open sights and low power light. Some of my longest shots in military were with no light .
Just learned a lot in 60 minutes My life in regards to my set up consists of replacement of batteries which is like a monthly bill as well 😂 Lights, lasers, optics, ear pro, etc if you train enough powering that stuff is costly then range cost bullets ohhh boy
Best IR Devices from Cheapest L3 peq-15 $1500 to expensive mawl-c1, wilcox raid-x, L3 ngal, Perst 2 are $3500. Then NVGs $3-5k for a mono, $12k for duals, top tier quads $20K PNVG AN/AVS 10 and $40k L3Harris GPNVG.
I used the 2nd generation of NVGs during Desert Storm, and those things were a pain in the ass to use. They were unwieldy since mounting options was limited to one; clunky straps. Washout was terrible with those too. We had to sign for them, and they were $14K if I remember correctly. EDIT: Rather than "image intensification", I think it's more accurate to say "light refracting" since that's literally what they do.
To refract light is to change the direction of light using materials with different index of refraction values or different shapes (radial curvature of a lense). Optical tools such as contact lenses, glasses, static zoom or variable zoom optics, even your eyeballs are all objects that refract light. However refraction does nothing to *amplify or intensify* an image. Within a NVD the refraction takes place only to preprocess the incoming image for the image intensifier tube and postprocess the amplified image for our eyeballs. So to say that NVDs are light refractors is inaccurate and insufficent in terms of their function even though it uses refraction in the process.
@@thegadfly1951 Yeah. It was my understanding that how they worked was they refracted light to a focal point in the NVGs, which has the effect of amplification because the light is being gathered. Your eyes can perceive small amounts of light because of refraction.
@@korndogz69 You may have confused image intensification with lighting concepts such as Lumen and Lux using refractions. Its much easier to understand NVDs in terms of energy and energy conversions. That is also not necessarily the case. In your eyes the lense is used to refract the image on to your retina. Your retina is what converts photons into chemical energy that your brain can interpret. Its not intensity but clarity of the image that refraction provides. Basically nearsightedness and farsightedness is due to the image converging being behind the retina and in front of the retina respectively due to oblong shape of the eye. (genetics) Astigmatism is due to irregularities in the lense that does not allow a cohesive image to converge properly onto the retina.

Id im having to defeat night vision, its going to be with lead.js
Surplus ballistic helmet, eBay surplus mount and shroud…… that’s how I saved a bit when I started with NV
If one can get a system that has both thermal and white phosphorus imaging for identifying then that would definitely be the way to go. Follow the acronym DIDD Detect, Identify(id) Decide. Using thermal for detection, spot target, switch to imaging for ID, decide friend or foe.
I believe that Thermal doesn't show through glass, but light magnifiers do.
@@Kevinj36541 deer are very easy to see if you have even mediocre IR. Look up some YT videos if you dont believe me.
The one animal i cant see is OWLS
Correct, thermal will not show through glass unless someone caused a temperature change, ie, breathing while hiding behind, or touching.
This guy is amazing, good channel guy too.
Wow.. The most informative nightvis video on the whole internet Thank you
Excellent interview. I learned a lot. Thank you.
Chip is one badass and awesome dude..
I think I'm just going to get a bright ass flash light lol
Exactly!! Besides, everything is gonna be on fire anyway, there'll be plenty of light.
Yeah, paint yourself white and red in a ring pattern too while you are at it.
@@Barskor1 it's called the element of surprise my bright ass light going to blind tf out of em
@@tatmanmyownbossdannydraco go with an infrared light burn the tubes of the enemy’s night vision 😈
@@tatmanmyownbossdannydraco IRC there is a flashlight so powerful it can burn paper held in front of it so totally doable, Click AHGHH! and pop pop.
@@alexduke5402 actually, it was a recent addition to the list, and the priorities ahead of it are real priorities. Nuff said.
@@gfodale I just got mine in. It's incredible! I'm taking it hog hunting tomorrow night. I hope you get all your things lined up!
Awesome info about night vision types. Great show!!!!???
This is such an awesome channel.
wow what a great video thanks this helped a lot..keep up the great videos.
Great interview. Thanks for all your work.
Image intensifiers are half the cost, and easy to destroy if you expose it to daylight.
Thermal scopes are great at seeing animals in the dark and from light into darker areas like during the day ...but don't see through glass.
This was a super helpful and informative interview. Thanks!
Best night vision video by far Tks👍
BWAHAHA!!! 46:17 Deadpan like a BOSS!!
Chip: "What, What is it?"
Colion: "Chubacabra".
😂
Its more then just a monocular. To be effective with the NVGs hours and days of training. Thousands of rounds, suppressor, then IR laser. A $3000 PVS 14 will end up being $7000-9000 at the end to be effective.
Something I had to get used to and still get better with is the field of vision it's not the best but you can get used to it and work with it
Chip said don’t keep nvgs in pelican cases. But what about the hard cases the pvs 7s and 14s come in? Like the ones built for the military. Does the air release valve do anything to help?
Some great advice and information on many subjects.
Night vision has some advantages and thermal has its advantages. There disadvantages are clear if you served in the military. Civilian models are the same as military expensive. You pay to play in the dark! I prefer open sights and low power light. Some of my longest shots in military were with no light .
Sounds like a great pairing with a 300 Black Out going subsonic and suppressed.
Just learned a lot in 60 minutes
My life in regards to my set up consists of replacement of batteries which is like a monthly bill as well 😂
Lights, lasers, optics, ear pro, etc if you train enough powering that stuff is costly then range cost bullets ohhh boy
thanks for the info of the cases and moisture
Thank you for the information!
Great info.
Excellent show. Very informative and understandable.
Faaaahk I just checked out the PVS-14 from NVD (Night Vision Devices) & their TOL (Top of line) is roughly 4500$!!!!!
Low end ... 2800$!
Goddammmmm
Good nods aren’t cheap, and cheap nods aren’t good :/
I gotta budget and set aside money for the next 2 yrs to buy nvg’s
That's what I said!
Thank you for this video.
Great content!
Dude is very smart ty
Thank you for this video Colion.
(genetics)
Astigmatism is due to irregularities in the lense that does not allow a cohesive image to converge properly onto the retina.
@@thegadfly1951 Ah I see (no pun intended)! That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!
Bro wtf, I've watched almost 6 hours of nvg videos today and now you drop this.
Very informative! I know absolutely nothing but info is always nice.
