Hey everyone! I know this is different from my normal content, and a lot of you won't care for this. I don't plan on doing anymore of these videos, but I have been recovering from tendonitis in my elbow and it was taking longer than I thought it would. But I am doing a lot better now and should be back to riding right away!
Your video is packed full of in-depth info and explained in ways that can be understood which is really cool. Could i please ask which accessories you use when out filming on your mountain bike? and sorry to hear about your elbow injury hope it recovers well. Cheers Tommy
GoPro needs to sponsor you. You’ve been using GoPros to their max for years and I’ve seen nobody do as good of an explanation as you have in this video
This was an amazing learning experience in just 43min. I always thought some of the settings were obvious but then you took it and made me question about it, I don't have a gopro but this applies to so much more areas than just gopros. Amazing video Jordan!
ND filters would be better if you are using optical stabilization or no hypersmooth, they will slow down your shutter speed, which can be great in the right context though!
thanx so much, really helped, today after I had used the osmo pocket and really liked it but that gimbal is not durable and one knock could mean the end, too expensive to repair,so I bought a gopro and I used it today , and of course, I got back home and looked at the footage, it was grainy, not smooth as I would like, tremly like my oppo a74, laggy and I was disappointed. so your vid has helped a lot and I am sure I will be shooting hiking footage next time. thanx again
Thanks Jordan. This is taking me from a triangulation of multiple "here's the settings used in my videos" from good MTB UA-camrs (fish) to understanding what the values actually are and how they are interdependent (how to fish). This is huge!
Excellent discussion. Thanks for taking the time to produce this! I want to use native wb but the color/hue shift makes it impossible to color grade for me so I stick to 5500K. Is your LUT available? It'd be great to play with that, especially if it simply fixed the color shifting.
Hey Jordan. Can you go to norway and try B-rage in Trysil. Its a dobbel black jump line. Its massive. Its in Gullia in the lower part of the summer park, right next to the pump track. ;)
This is ridiculously excellent. I’ve watched a lot of camera config vids, not just for GoPros but for mirrorless, drones, DSLRs etc, and this is probably the best I’ve seen on settings for any specific camera. You nailed showing how each setting influences others, but more importantly what this actually looks like in the resulting footage, and why. Crazy amount of info with real world shots for context. This would have taken a metric sh!t-tonne of time to plan and execute. Nice work mate. Much appreciated. 🍻
This is by far the best GoPro setup video I have seen. It's also the only one that points out that you need -1 or more EV when using 'flat' modes. In one of Abe Kislevitz's videos, he confirmed that flat was in fact a log curve (previously it was thought that it wasn't), and this backs up the idea of reducing the exposure in that mode to make the most of any additional dynamic range. It will be extremely interesting what you find with the HERO10. I've been playing around with the new Natural profile, and to be honest I'm not finding a huge difference in usable dynamic range with the flat mode, so I am using Natural most of the time now. Particularly because it maximises the tonal range as well. And you were right, there's a lot here for professional users to learn about how the GoPro behaves here. A lot of time and effort very well spent, thanks!
@@JordanBoostmaster I'm going to feature this on RedShark News on Monday. A lot of information here that nobody has covered properly before. I was actually about to make a video before I saw this highlighting some of the funky noise/colour clipping on highly saturated colours on the older cameras before I saw that you had done so in this one!
Hey Jason, just stumbled on your GoPro settings video. Like you I am a GoPro geek, but I use it for Adventure motorcycle riding. I've been doing a lot of my own experimentation on shutter speed, hypersmooth, ex comp, and ISO settings... and like you I only relatively recently realised that GoPro cranks ISO much earlier than I was expecting in order to maximise shutter speed. The problem I have is that I DO want some motion blur, but not too much... so it's a fine line. If my shutter speeds get too high, then the landscape looks "too hectic"... So I'm using ND filters with my GoPro to try and go for a shutter of around 1/160 - 1/225sec. I've done manual tests and that seems to be the sweet spot for motorcycle shooting. I don't know about you, but boy oh boy I wish that GoPro would include some more exposure information (even as an option) in their cameras, so that I knew: a) What my shutter speed was (even if set to auto) b) What my ISO was c) Some sort of exposure indication (either histogram or a simple light meter). thanks for your video. Very interesting.
Mega props for doing this. Some other MTB UA-camrs claim their settings are proprietary 🙄 You add value for your viewers, which is why you have tons more subs than they do.
Should I just leave my shutter speed on auto? I get blurry footage regardless if I adjust the shutter speed. For example, I do 5.3k res 30fps and 1/60. Auto white balance and iso min and max
Christ , if the main objective was to use the maximum amount of corporate jargon to convey virtually zero useful information , mission accomplished 😂👌👍
Super cool video. I really learned a lot. Until now I just kinda guessed my settings and they were fine, but not outstandingly good. I think this just changed. Also I'm much more aware what the different settings really do and how they affect each other. Thank you relly much for making this video
Hey Jordan. Since you said you would like a minimum shutter speed, there is an option how you can get this. I would suggest that you visit Abe Kislevitz webside, there is an article about it. It explains how you can get an min shutter via GoPro Labs, which is an experimental software from GoPro. I also use it and it is really useful!
This has to the best Gopro video setting tutorial I've come across. So much to learn on here. Full watch Like and followed your channel mate. Thanks for sharing the well worth content.
This is AWESOME. Thanks, answers lots of my questions that I would have never figured out. What are you seeing with GroPro10 black, Hypersmooth 4.0? Do you like the same settings? Thanks so much
hello sir, i just want to ask you something about those settings. Are those applicable too for motovlogging, or just for mtb vlogs? And can you suggest what white balance should I use in different weather and lighting conditions (e.g. cloudy, daylight but raining, evening vlogs) thank you sir in advance :)
Jordan, I've been watching these videos all morning after my impulse buy (H8 blk). I haven't bought a new one since my Hero 2!! WTF are you reading my mind?
A really good video man! With so much good info and clarification! Thank you for sharing this! Improved my video quality so much! Big hugh from Portugal!👍
Really helpful stuff even for someone who works with cameras! I always want to shoot in 60 fps for how crisp and smooth an image it is but it really does make everything look so slow. These were some really great tips for getting the most out of the camera and guiding the auto settings into faster shutters. All the side by side comparisons were much appreciated.
DAMM great timing I got a Hero9 today for a 3 week mt bike trip leaving next week. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you using a camera mic windscreen? I was looking at the little fur muff stick on ones.
Hey Jordan, you're video is spot on and is the only GoPro video tutorial that has helped me get my setting looking sharp with no blurring. I can see you have spent a great deal of time putting this video together but I think this is the best video tutorial for bike riding. I have a pushbike that I do many suburban/country path riding and the latest video came out perfect. Next is to test the settings out on the motorbike. I'm sure I will get it right. BTW there are a lot of UA-cam GoPro tutorials video's giving inaccurate advice but I finally got it right with your detailed video. Thanks and great work.

Dude have you seen the Gnartec Chin Mount? Makes riding footage really engaging to watch. You would get INSANE FOOTAGE with it 🎉. This video was great, thanks you
Thank you Jordan for this extensvie tutorial. I only got my HERO 10 delivered today, so I don't actually know what to tweak... Thanks for clarifying things for me!
Hero 10 I have is so bad. Tried all the setting combinations. Looks worse than any 1080 camera. Worse than cell phones. They claim 4k and better. But pause and zoom in and its blurry on these things. Gopro has good build quality, nice app, voice control, and much more. But video quality is the one thing that matters and youtube is full of people complaining about bad video and everyone is offering settings to try and fix the video. Bit nobody has any nice video uploaded. Its all really bad video. When gopro first came out is was supposed to be impressive. Where is there any good video besides the examples from the gopro company??
I'm a go pro hero 7 user and why I just found your video after looking for a tutorial for a long time... sad on other chanel videos just saying crap my video is still not good and it's driving me crazy thank you very much for working hard on making video tutorials you are a valuable teacher😃
Hey Jordan - I stumbled across your vid today (hadn't heard of you previously) and really appreciate the effort you put into the video. I learned one or two things that I didn't already know but more than anything appreciate the time you put into this vid and the willingness to share your knowledge. Thanks!
I watched this a couple years back and recently decided to get back into learning my GoPro 9 and by far, this is the absolute best and fullest toutorial I have seen with some real practical advice! Thank you so much for all the hard work!

This is THE BEST video and coverage of this topic I have ever seen! I’ve never seen your channel before and I am so impressed with the professionalism and depth of your content! You got my sub👍
I just picked up an 8 after not needing an action camera for several years and only having a Hero 2, which has basically zero settings other than the resolution. Thanks for the info
That's some great content, I haven't watched many videos over 30min. Honestly I have a different taste and different priorities to videos. On such downhill videos, as a viewer, I won't be able to tell if there is or isn't graining, since it's so fast moving. I wouldn't really care much about grain at all. On a still video, I would definitely be able to tell, but in such settings you can typically influence your environment. I would ride with 100 min and 6400 max ISO. Second, I would place importance on the shutter, for the sake of sharpness, motion blur limitation and to help Hypersmooth perform. I would prefer good contrast, bright colors, a smooth image, and make it easy to the eye. So white balance it a bit warmer, increase the contrast, but not make it look too unnatural, rather a bit more movielike to FEEL the experience. I watch to see a bit of fantasy too, entertainment, some eye candy. Don't take it personally, but some scenes you've shown were just difficult for me to follow as they were too dark, low contrast... They looked real, movie like and fantastic, but I myself personally cannot be bothered to watch longer because I'm looking to follow something easy, not put effort into trying to see what I am looking at.
Pause this video and zoom in just a little. Look at the blur, poor color. Looks like a digital camera from 1990. I want to like gopro but its like looking through a muddy windshield.
Hi Jordan, Your tutorial is the best I've seen so far, big compliments! The only criticism is that when you insert text and talk at the same time, it becomes difficult. Because reading and listening at the same time is unfortunately almost impossible! Thanks for the great tutorial, 👍👍👍I bought the Hero 10. Super the little "beast" cheers Paul
Thx a lot I will try this and hope my Videos are better now. I was very happy with my old settings but on the sides of the image my footage was jittering like crazy, especially when moving slow, it hurt my eyes to watch it. Hope its better now. Amazing work!
Woah, that was a lot of content and information, thank you! I wonder if you tried lowering the FPS to test if some improvement could be achieved at some range. Also, what settings would you definitely apply with a gimbal setup?
with a gimbal, you can get away with turning off hypersmooth, which really opens up possibilites to have a slower shutter speed and have a decent amount of motion blur while keeping it looking natural, and a cleaner image becasue the ISO doesn't have to go so high! it is definitely a good way to go!
Thanks so much for this!! Just watched and took notes. This will definitely save me a ton of time and less unusable footage for sure Question: with the new gopro 10, do you think a gimbal is a waste of time for shooting pov mtn bike footage? And out of curiosity, what is your favorite mount for POV? chest, chin or a specific helmet location? Again, thanks so much for all your hard work and I hope your elbow is doing better!
thanks so much! I like the chin mount the best, that I what I am using all the time now. A gimbal is generally a waste of effort unless you really want that kind of look.
II bought a used Hero 7 Black. The main reason for the purchase was because my old Hero 4 does not have image stabilization. I used the new camera a couple of times during the downhill, but the picture is shaky. The camera was on the chest. I am wondering what is the best place to carry the camera. By the way, the video is excellent, I have to watch it a few more times to catch everything :)
21:52 was looking for this answer on the ev comp even at the gopro support and no one answered if the shutter or iso would be adjusted... the video sample confirms its the shutter speed... thanks!

Man, you’re a fucking wizard on a bike. Those runs look incredible. Great vid! Subed 👊
If only 'HYPERSMOOTH' worked on dark trails.
hey, amazing video. absolutely what I am looking for. Great work. Thx ;-)
Just curious if there is a way I can get the LUT you talked about around the 34-35 minute mark, it looks like it does an excellent job
Just need an action Cam that shoots in RAW. Most likely won't be possible but would be great for dynamic range and colour grading.
Thanks for share with US Jordan,. Good rides and vbes for you BIG RIDER
@@JordanBoostmaster i was thinking that especially with the stabilization in the gopro10.. what chin mount device are you using?
too much information. if i don't use ND filter, can i set iso 1600, shutter auto, -2ev to film on sunny day and low light places?
II bought a used Hero 7 Black. The main reason for the purchase was because my old Hero 4 does not have image stabilization. I used the new camera a couple of times during the downhill, but the picture is shaky. The camera was on the chest. I am wondering what is the best place to carry the camera. By the way, the video is excellent, I have to watch it a few more times to catch everything :)
The Video is fantastic, thank you so much it was very helpful!
21:52 was looking for this answer on the ev comp even at the gopro support and no one answered if the shutter or iso would be adjusted... the video sample confirms its the shutter speed... thanks!
Hope your healing good!!! Great video I was using your old settings 🤪. But great info and thanks for taking the time.
