- Grandmaster Ben Finegold looks at some recent games (and one classic) from the World's best including: Georg Meier vs. Vladimir Kramnik; Etienne Bacrot vs. Richard Rapport; Weiqi Zhou vs. Ray Robson; Wang Yue vs. Ray Robson; Sergey Karjakin vs. Alexandra Kosteniuk and David Bronstein vs. Viktor Korchnoi.
"Usually, it's not that one side plays well and one side plays badly and the side that plays well wins. Usually, you both play badly... and then one of you decides to make the worst move in all time and minus 100." I couldn't sum up my chess life better than this.
Ben finegold is the greatest chess lecturer of all time
4:15 Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice". I see Ben is a poetry fan
Every time I hear that string section play the St Louis Chess Club them I get all psyched
A drinking game: Look in the comments and take a shot every time you see "terrible" or "very suspicious"
He only says "terrible" about five times in 40 minutes, here. Perhaps he was ill.
alright lets be honest here.... how can someone dislike this? like what were the guys expecting when they clicked on this video... terrible
18:25 Your pronunciation of "Scheveningen" is almost perfect! I have never heard a foreigner say it so well. You just put "a little" too much stress on the "ch" part :-)
Great teaching style Ben. Very enjoyable.
4 passed pawns.. remember that ...
Ra8 is really stunning!
Yes, the Marshall Chess Club is very suspicious...
Ben Finegold is the best
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Wut
Never went to highschool?
TheGeneralCase fire and ice by frost
From 00:10 I love his smirk laughter in the start of the video!!!!!! :D
0:18 LOL what a laugh :D
It's been 10 years and I'm still frozen to my seat by the Karjakin sequence.
Help
his humour is special but i like it. imo the lecture was very entertaining hence instructive.
Ra8 I hate when that happens
you can't take your own piece AND you're in check has to be the best one liner in chess
The outro was gold
00:36 Georg Meier vs. Vladimir Kramnik
08:30 Etienne Bacrot vs. Richard Rapport
19:09 Weiqi Zhou vs. Ray Robson
22:14 Wang Yue vs. Ray Robson
28:27 Sergey Karjakin vs. Alexandra Kosteniuk
35:46 David Bronstein vs. Viktor Korchnoi
7:20 i'm still cryin'
these videos are epic
Worth mentioning at the very end. After Rxh6+ Kg5 white has Qe5+ Kxh6 Qh5 mate.
Ben is THE BEST !
I asked a friend and he is rated like minus a million hahahahah :D Ben's hilarious as hell
I have a feeling that someone had some number of passed pawns at some point.
Maybe 4?
Awesome video!
Can anyone explain the last game for me? I see how Kf4 gives up the black queen, but how is Kf6 just as bad?
g5 check with the pawn. but Ben explained this move at 40:45
have a nice day .)
Ben, there’s a third move in Bronstein Korchnoi 1962 you didn’t have time to mention: the move for black Kf7, which puts white into one move checks in order to save his rook.
39 Rxh6+ Kf7 40 Qb7+ Kg8 41 Qa8 Kf7 results in a draw.
This might be a nice example of why you don’t allow students to resign.
Also, stockfish recommends moves that hang the queen. 39 Rxh6+ Kf7 40 Qc8+ Kg8 41 Qc8+ Qf8! 42 Rh8+ Kxh8. Don’t do that!
Is this correct?
What does he have with Ken West that he keeps talking about him 10 times every lecture?
"White to play and win. This is why Bronstein was almost the world champion and you were not... you were almost not able to get into the lecture that's the difference" LOL
After Nxh6, f7 seems good?
The second last game was insane!
In the final position of the last game, what about Qe8+; that also wins, right?
fibonacci112358s at 39:03, I mean
I read this, right at the time i was on this. Time.... And i tougth about that too
Qf7
This guy is so crazy :D
funny or not, hes trying to make the lecture more interesting, and he does a great job at it!
5:35 Why didn't White play Queen D2?
Qxb4+
@@spirou2012 oh
hahaha this guy is the best
The great Jack Benny once chastised Rich Little for copying his fingers to the chin move using 4 fingers. Jack told Rich, "You've got it all wrong! It's 3 fingers, not 4."
Rich said in his best Benny voice (complete with hand move), "But why?!"
Benny answered, "Because 3 is FUNNIER!"
So, the answer to the Bronstein story is, "Because Ben is FUNNIER!"
What game by Bronstein is Ben referring to? Because when I look for his "dream game" I only find a Nimzo game, not a King's gambit.
@14:00 why not Rh7 ...?? Bcoz if [1)...Bxd5 2)Rxg7,Bxg8 3)RxQ+,KxR where white has a rook for 2 minor pieces + 4 connected passed pawns. As opposed to the variation 1)d5 shown by GM Finegold which ends up with R for 2 M Pieces + 3 connected passed pawns... So, is my variation a tiny bit better.... What say??? Anyone???
+Kedar Sahasrabudhe maybe Qd5 followed by Qe4+?
+RayVitoles No.... Qd5 is a blunder due to 1)Qxd5,Bxd5 2)Rxg7... White has an extra rook and 4 connected pp... evaluation is around 9.2 for white..... Therefore, I surmised you meant Qf5! instead of Qd5?? Now after Qf5 [If 1)Rxg7?,Qe4+ 2)Kd1,Qxd4+ 3)Ke1,Qe3+] and Black steals a perpetual!!!... So, I overlooked the refutation Qf5 and hence d5 is better than Rh7.
Rh7 is risky because of Qf5 which threatens your rook and perpetual ;)
never mind, I didnt see your last comment
alright I didnt see Ra8 in the end but I think Bxd5 instead is also winning because after Kxf8 you can play Bb7 and after Ra7 you can play a6 and if that's not winning, I must be crazy
I noticed the tactic and I'm pretty sure I don't meet the rating requirements since I don't play chess. I'm happy lol :)
For a second, I mis-parsed the title as "... from the World's Best GM, Ben Finegold". :)
25:22 Rxg4 only looses the exchange right? whereas Rc3 looses the bishop for free...
The rook is pinned to the king... so... no! ;)
At 13:45, what about Rh7 instead of d5
I would guess Qf5, followed by checks on the white squares until forever - the bishop and the c4-pawn connect very well with the queen there. 0-0-0 there (like after the immediate Qf5 instead of Qg4 drawing in the line before taking on b6) fails to Qxh7, and if you take on g7 then Qe4, Qd3, Qf3, Qg2 etc - if you go towards the queenside it might even be mate after Qe3 Qd2 something and the bishop entering.
This game was played long long before everyone was born, even the players. Ha ha !!
4:28 can't white play Qa5 here? Am I missing something?
If Qg6 Qa5 Rb5 will win the g-pawn and probably mate
#1 Fan here finishing videos... Terrible and Very Suspicious!!!
i didnt get it, had to run it thru my engine
is there a rehab for sarcasm addiction
Hey Ben! You should stop drinking so many soft drinks and switch to water ;)
chess is like that we are all bad at playing chess its just a matter of on what level
Rook a8 holy crap
29:25 relatable
is Ken west really a gm?
🃏🃏🃏🇺🇸🔬🌞 🔥
no, terrible!
Ben actually mated in real life?
did he just said "sta" at 12:40 which means what in serbian
omg
Well, you know, it's "what" in Russian too. And I think he addressed it at that Dimitri fellow :P
Is there really a rating requirement to get into the advanced class and if so what is it? Is it because these lectures are heavily oversubscribed. Man, the young chess players in St Louis are really lucky!!
Patrick Gorman Any member can attend, but the advanced class had a recommended minimum rating of 1800.
Danny Dingo He is just teasing. Everyone is bad at chess. Did you know this? He talks about his own terrible moves almost as much as he teases these 1800 kids, who are way better than me, and still terrible. For more information on the validity of ratings please visit the Fide website and take a look at the algorithms used in the Elo Rating System.
Adam Cunningham i'm sure everyone understands he's kidding, however, I personally agree he does it too often and it sounds rude and almost malicious even if it isn't intended to be so
+oskill The fact that his entire style of lecturing revolves around mocking other people or himself kind of gives away the fact that if he's saying you're bad he's probably not being very serious about it :P
Of course, that still doesn't mean everyone understands he's joking. But then again, that's just life. Sometimes people misinterpret what other people are saying. Luckily that's not that harmful in this case.
+Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis how do you join a chess club and what are they and how do they work?
He's right about Nakamura at the end, that guy is so good at lashing out some deep tactics within a millisecond
*Four passed pawns*
"I can't believe Bronstein is better than you guys. He's not even alive." 39:05 hahaha : )
At least it isn't ethanol haha
angstgegner
Rook a8, the truth hurts!
Keep drinking pop Ben, it's funnier.
Hey Jose! You should stop telling other people what to do and mine your own business ; )
I know he calls it teasing, but he just talks about how THIS IS THE MOVE.. you can't find it? and this is the advance class; pffff...
there's hardly any thought process explained in anything..
i don't call this teaching.. i call this a this-is-what-you-do instructional video to a very specific game
