Gotta love Guthrie Govan's humorous, sarcastic remarks. Like right from the start, "[string bending] is a great way of taunting the piano players of the world" or 2:02, "rather than ripping off my first finger to be a martyr in the name of blues..."! In every video of him I end up literally laughing out loud at some point. Of course, one more great lesson from this amazing musician.
0:09 His entire anti-piano cascade here is so fantastic xD Not because he's taunting piano-players, but because he seems to enjoy the inside joke so incredibly much xD Love it!
I've always though about that too, I came to he conclusion though that while what you're saying is completely true, when the bridge lifts he string is slacker so it's easier to bend so I think all in all he difference is negligible .
His muscle memory is evident. He's practiced those bends for thousands of hours. That's his thing. That's what I notice about his playing the most. His bends are just insane.
I thought this video was going to be like getting a particle physicist to teach preschool science (in terms that he is ultimately overqualified and it is a waste of his expertise), yet he managed to pull out an exercise that could benefit even the most experienced player. Hat's off Mr Govan, you truly are a great teacher.
I haven't broken a string in years either. What's your point ? I appreciate Ibanez guitars because of one feature: wide necks. Overall, they're fine too, but they're not the best I've tried.
Hi Thorbur1 we have a Funky Playing lesson available on our website by Guthrie we'll send you a link to the lesson via your UA-cam Email! All the best Licklibrary
depends on how you factor in everything, different pickups in the same guitar will make it feel and sound different. It's all about preference but prestige and medium priced ibanez guitars are generally awesome.
a lot of things make influence on how hard it is to bend a note, string tension is just one of them. I realized that the worse thing is when the fret is in need of crowning, when it is flat on the surface, it really difficults the bending, specially when the frets are not very clean. The scale length also modifies it. The action will have a lot of influence on the bending too, lower strings makes it easier to play fast but also reduces the contact with your finger, also hard to bend.
No, it's in standard tuning. Low E string may be the easiest string to bend. And 12th fret is the easiest fret to bend. The Floyd Rose might have something to do with it. Because it releases tension from other strings too when you bend a string. I'm not sure how many semitones I can bend on a hardtail guitar.
Hello Licklibrary! I didnt know how to message you guys as i am not very good with computers, so i just replied to this message. I saw a video by you guys and mr. Govan a while back which i believe was titled Guthrie Govan funky rhythm playing. Now I cant seem to find the video anywhere, and I was wondering if you could help me out. Can you maybe direct me to a place where it can be bought or viewed? Thanks in advance, and please excuse my poor english and grammar!
true in most cases. but guthrie has a tremol-no installed in his guitara, so if he wants to he can block it. awesome thing, you should check it out if you have a trem equipped guitar. makes it much more versatile.
I understand exactly what you're saying, but before I typed this I picked up my tele and did a 4 fret bend (with high action and 11 - 52s), so clearly what you're saying isn't true. Bending is a subject that could be covered in great detail as the technique of bending from the wrist and not the fingers, placement, intonation, strength vs control etc are all elements overlooked by a lot of guitarists.
i mean the dave gilmour bends there the ones that will have you breaking strings im not on about 1 tone or semitone ones.there good starters. But if your into gary moore or some of the blues rock players thats when bending is really used.Keep at it
Bend them till they break.String bending is one of hardest techniques on guitar most people avoid it but stick with it and you will see results and a lot of trips to the music store for strings.
I'd say that it could well be more difficult for Guthrie to bend given the fact that he has a floating trem on that guitar - when he bends the string pulls the trem forward so in theory he would have to bend further. I don't know anything though, this could just be ramblings ;-)
Sure, but you see just as many bending from the fingers because they don't know any better ;) Obviously people break strings, but there's just as much, if not more chance that they break strings because of string corrosion or a sharp edge near the bridge. The few times I've seen people break a string doing a big bend, it's usually always at the bridge, never at the finger. That suggests a weak point there. I had that problem with my first Suhr actually, needed to buff the saddle.
Guthrie is playing 10s with a medium action, I have mine set up with 11s and a higher action and I don't have any problems either - it's all about correct technique, not the tools
1:16 You do realize that not everyone can bend over 3 semitones with their guitar. High tension guitars like those set up for blues can't go further than 2 semitones. Mine can, but I've got an Ibanez with .9 - .42 strings, set very loose.
all about technique ? it's freekin bending, the only technique variations are upward or downward bending, with one finger or with another one or two behind it for support. I'm telling you that some guitars can't bend over 3 semitones without a custom setup. What I mean by that is that if you've bent past the 2nd semitone the string breaks.
Without ANY DOUBT the best guitar player out there! Jesus, really really good! Thanks for all Guthrie! Ahh, and thanks to your parents for creating you \,,/

Love this guys playing and personality. You're the man Dr. Govan
One of the best instructors and Guitarists out there amazing...
This guy is Bob Ross of guitar
I've always though about that too, I came to he conclusion though that while what you're saying is completely true, when the bridge lifts he string is slacker so it's easier to bend so I think all in all he difference is negligible .
3:58 WHAT
Does anyone else just stare agape at that? HE HIT EVERY SINGLE NOTE PERFECTLY.
LMFAO never heard of muscle memory I guess.
Thankyou Guthrie. That tip to bend to the same note as the strung note is really helpful and will give me plenty to practice.
easily one of the best tutors in the universe, if you get a chance to see him in session do it!
its a real eye opener ;)
His muscle memory is evident. He's practiced those bends for thousands of hours. That's his thing. That's what I notice about his playing the most. His bends are just insane.
This video is from one of the techniques bundles you can get from the website, will Guthrie be doing any new ones?
This defines a great teacher ,
He entertains whiles keeping it interesting.
Learned a lot from just 5 min. Great stuff\m/
Best guitar teacher in the universe.
That chromatic stuff kills me! Great video man!

Yeah I've been planning on getting one, they look very useful.
Yes, what you said about the floyd rose makes sense.

"Martyr for the blues" hahahaha this man is so brilliant sometimes
What are the best strings for bending?
The Man has skills and explains the concepts with a such grace!
Awesome !
What kind of strings should I use on these exercises?
Amazing.
Don't forget that he plays for hours a day. He has strength in his fingers that us mere mortals can only dream of.

you can find it on Suhr website

jesus christ hes so good i was jamming along in my head to the goddamn scale bending practice

Guthrie Govan + Brown Suhr = Perfect Combination
i'd love to see if Guthrie play that 'flight of the bumblebee'
3:57 so precise...
Superb
3:58 DUDE DAFAQ THAT'S AMAZING
very nice

Is that a Single channel Cornford? I think Robin Trower has one of these in his studio. Sweet amps for deep wallets. LOL Great video Bro.
I know it sounds geeky, but I'd love to see someone do some proper research into it!
i mean the dave gilmour bends there the ones that will have you breaking strings im not on about 1 tone or semitone ones.there good starters. But if your into gary moore or some of the blues rock players thats when bending is really used.Keep at it
He has this crazy tone that almost sounds like a distorted blues harmonica...
Bend them till they break.String bending is one of hardest techniques on guitar most people avoid it but stick with it and you will see results and a lot of trips to the music store for strings.
Where can I buy that govan's favorite shirt??
Premium Content!
สุดยอดอ่ ไอด้อล ของผม เลยคร๊าปเนี้ย
every 2 weeks if you're playing a lot!
Thought this was going to be basic beginner stuff, but I actually learned a few new tricks! I love this guy!
I tried that chromatic one... my b string snapped. Thanks Guthrie!
Genius
Does anyone have any suggestions on which strings to use for this kinda stuff?
I'd say that it could well be more difficult for Guthrie to bend given the fact that he has a floating trem on that guitar - when he bends the string pulls the trem forward so in theory he would have to bend further. I don't know anything though, this could just be ramblings ;-)
I love how he's British! :D
subtitles in spanish please, this videos are very goods
Hey Guthrie,
I have one question to your guitar play.
can u switch skills with mee?
Sure, but you see just as many bending from the fingers because they don't know any better ;)
Obviously people break strings, but there's just as much, if not more chance that they break strings because of string corrosion or a sharp edge near the bridge.

Ah that is a good point
what guitar is he playing?
Superhuman Player & teacher - respect
I must say, I think Guthrie has a better grasp on what every single note actually sounds like than anybody I've ever listened to.
how much fingers have you ?
the master
they just soooo funnnyyy XD
Thnx \m/
i wonder how does he look shaved. Nive video, thank you Guthrie =)
4:25 Talk about clearing off the fretboard!
is that guy from *the darkness* ?? ^^
his teaching skills really are on the same level as his playing skills. unbelievable
1:38 i never thought i see the day me made a mistake..i make those almost every scale i play
how does he bend those strings that much and they dont break??
And so on.
Ah, the sweet taste of a guthrie lesson...........
Guthrie is playing 10s with a medium action, I have mine set up with 11s and a higher action and I don't have any problems either - it's all about correct technique, not the tools

Suhr... we miss you
Anyone knows what gauge strings he use? 10-46?
01:34 *hits a bad note* "Wuh!"
he tuned down half a step to slacken the strings, but 13s are indeed very heavy.
guitar scale and string gauge please
all about technique ? it's freekin bending, the only technique variations are upward or downward bending, with one finger or with another one or two behind it for support. guthrie gooby pls
Gg till the end
🤘
What guitar is that?
It's his signature suhr, and yes it is expensive :p
RyuSanSama Sanchez wow really? Yeah now all the awesome fusion guys are showing off with their new suhrs :(
Without ANY DOUBT the best guitar player out there! Jesus, really really good! Thanks for all Guthrie! Ahh, and thanks to your parents for creating you \,,/
Ha I agree!
He was talking of a real Piano, which in turn hammers a string each time you strike a key, not an electronical (or USB) keyboard, but that's ok ;)
1:35 HE'S MORTAL!!!!
The purpose of the comment was for your benefit. No attempt at personal gain intended.
3:59 my jaw just dropped to the floor
"Each position has a bend assigned to it, and your goal would be to teach yourself how much each correct bend hurts." Classic.
I wish I could just hang out with him for a day.
My guitar will bend if I try the chromatic bending exercise
the vibrato has to be "below the note".so bend, and for vibrato first release, then bend up again, but never go over the note
Just ordered 20 sets of strings after watching this video
I can't tell if his action is low or high.
3:59 yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Its russell brand!
Flight of the bumblebee. 'the one with every note'
Exactly.
