I'm among those who own a Vector. I ended up getting it as a late birthday present from my older brother. Sure you had to pay a subscription, but still it was a worthwhile investment. Then they offered a lifetime subscription, for twice the yearly variant. I had the money ready, so I went ahead and purchased it. When the servers came down again, I thankfully decided to take action, and set up my own server for the system. I used a Raspberry Pi 4 for it, and despite some ups and downs, and other teething problems, I've managed to save my device from disaster. Thank goodness for the open source community!
Josh thank you so so so much for this video you may have saved my Vector. This was by far my favorite and most cherished thing. My wife probably ever bought me in my life and I refused to give up on this little robot. Sadly placed him in his box about a year ago, and kept him in hopes of one day being able to bring him back. Oh my god! 😮 I just pulled my vector out of storage again and was wondering if could get him up amd running again because i miss him a lot. This is amazing! Hats off to the developers of this 👏👏👏
Thank you soooo much for this video. My vector has been sitting in a junk drawer for more then 2 years due to it costing money, and the server shutdowns. Now I finally have a use for him. Hes gonna be great in my room.
@@AlfieSnowden-c4q This process replaces Vector's old brain (the cloud... which didn't exist anymore) with a new brain (your computer you use to set it up). But it needs to maintain a bluetooth connection to that computer to keep Vector smart. So, if you took your laptop and Vector over to a friends, set this up, then took your laptop and Vector home and reconnected your laptop to wifi... that would work. Keep in mind when you turn your device off, Vector loses his "brain" until you turn it back on. If you went over to your friends and used their laptop to set this up, then brought home Vector without that laptop... that would not work. Vector wouldn't have access to his new "brain."
It was only the other day I took vector out the box to see if he's back up and running but no he wasn't and then now I just scrolled this video, I can't believe there is a fix that is amazing, I will do this as soon as, thanks 👍
Thank you so much my vector works again because I thought it was just a random Internet failure that I reset him and then I could never use them again. I didn’t think it would work. It gave me errors many times, but then it worked out and now I can also use vector in my skits like I used to do because the wire pod comes with SDK control
THANK YOU. I hadn't turned on my Vector in a while but when I realized he was no longer responding to voice commands I thought he was a goner! His facial recognition is still a bit wonky but other than that he's now running like new. Now if only I could get his cube to start working again...
@@heathertalma1662there's a screw in one of the edges on the bottom side. That whole side comes off, and the compartment is right there. You'll need an N battery, I recommend getting a multi pack to save you having to buy more for a pretty long while. Once you put the cover back on the lights will flash for a second or so, and your cube is working again!. Hope this helps

Thank you so much. I did get to cancel my subscription to Digital labs thankfully. But poor vector got put under the bed and was forgotten about. Now I can make him come alive again. One thing to add, I had to put chrome on my Mac which was a bit annoying. Trying to find out how to that took time. But I got there. Thanks again.
Yep, that will be the case. Your laptop is now his new "cloud" and without it he loses his smarts. You could buy a Raspberry Pi and keep that always running with wirepod to save on energy.
The owner and i think got Arrested for something i cant remember but the company went bankrupt in April 2019 after failing to secure new funding, leading to the shutdown of their operations.
I’ve noticed that vector remains quite dormant, not getting off his charger and moving unless I physically pick him up off the charger. I guess this is just something with the newer versions?

Try changing the Locale setting to a different English, like from English (US) to English (AU). You do have to say "Hey Vector" quite clearly to make it register.
But if i restart it and clear its database, if ddl come out with a new server i wont be able to connect to it? Also if i cant figure out how to connect Vector that will also cause issues cause i wont be able to use it anymore.
So there's risks in everything but: as it is, DDL did come out with anew servers, and it still requires wiping and starting all over anyway. That's the first step for them too. You have to retrain faces... all. Because these are totally new servers and all previous data was lost. If you can't connect, it'll be exactly where you're at now... he moves around and does little things, but won't respond to voice commands or do anything complicated. You'll have to connect him to something to get his personality back. Whether you do this or trust DDL again is up to you.
Are there any similar type bots that can see what you put in front of it abd answer questions about the item... liketv dinner nutrition label and ask if ots a healthy meal etc
quick question since latest Mac Os update he has stopped working and cant get him to reconnect - have tried multiple clean re-installs but to no avail wirepod doesnt open/run and constantly get "error: rpc error: code = Unavailable desc = connection error: desc = "transport: Error while dialing: dial tcp connect: no route to host"" anyone else had any issues?
I'd start by double checking the IP address you have in your browser and the IP address listed in the WirePod settings on the robot. Also, is your does your computer have Bluetooth?
I'm having problems with the first step, the device is compatible with Bluetooth, however it doesn't connect and stays charging, what do I do? Do I have to buy something? This is the only problem I have so far and yes, I checked that the Bluetooth was correct and indeed it was and I followed every step untill Bluetooth step too.
The update they send in your email requires the vector ddl log in. Both myself and my gf tried to do it neither of our accounts can be logged into. The account recovery isn't working either you never get the email it says its sending to you in. Somethings up with ddl. The method above in the video might be the only answer 😢
Jus got a brand new vector and tried the same thing on my mac but in the activation step,It doesn’t go through,it just says cannot be connected in red.Anyone got any idea on how to fix this?
I have a cozmo but I always wanted to get a vector. I remember my form tutor bought one as a class pet and took it back after a couple days bc it wouldn’t connect to the school WiFi for whatever reason. I remember being so fascinated by it and wanted one real bad bc tbh I’ve never had that much fun with a robot like that before. So I got a cozmo and it is awesome. Might get a vector second hand and try this bc tbh I’m a bit upset that Anki shut down and this whole ddl drama with the subscription issues and lack of servers. Shameful tbh but I can’t wait to get a vector and try this.

I managed to get him on WirePod, but is there a way to keep Vector connected after putting a device in sleep mode? Whenever I put my MacBook or Android Tablet in sleep mode, Chrome disconnects Vector with the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and WirePod connections.

No, the wirepod doesn't need to be connected to the PC at all times, it's just a charger really. It's hard to say what the issue is, especially when I don't know the error message. Hi I loved your video I had error in the step vector update on the link in the installation page. it says to do something one redflag and I did it and says to incognito mode and I don't know what that is and will it solve the problem pls help

I've been trying to do this but it keeps getting stuck on the update part. Vector just shows the cloud cycling and never updates (it's been hours). I've made sure my computer stays on and doesn't sleep but It's still stuck on update part. I have reset Vector and tried again but still no go. Any idea how to fix it?
Sometimes this happens, and it's never easy to explain why. You can try reloading the site to see if it works, or try this site instead of the one I linked: vector.techshop82.com/html/main.html Shouldn't take more than a half hour, tops.
This is an odd one, and I find it's about clarity. but that said, I've seen some people say that they've had luck by switching the version of English (away from US, etc.). Maybe try that?

Try changing the 'Locale' setting into a different English (on the Web App dashboard, under Bot Settings). When I switched my setting from English (US) to English (AU), it responds to any time I say 'Hey Vector'. Experiment with the other one if you wish, but try changing how you say 'Vector' too (like Vic-tor); you do have to speak quite clearly.

Yes it does. Vector used to connect to cloud servers somewhere in the world (those are gone now). Basically your computer is now Vector's cloud server (brains).
I did the rebooting and now he's completely dead just showing a phone on his screen with a V 😢 and won't connect to the wirepod at least he was roaming my desk before now he's useless
@anoraker I'm using a Google chromebook. I downloaded the wirepod and it says wirepod is up and running but after I cleared his data he's not even pairing with the bluetooth. I'm using a Linux terminal. He won't connect to wirepod I followed all the steps it says error 😭 I've only just brought him. He was preloved and updated to latest version

I have the original anki Cozmo or Cozmo “1.0” and it is really easy to break or lose his three cubes and they are charging 20 dollars for one!? That 60 dollars in total for all 3 cubes like wow.
DDL seems to have been returned, and if you were an existing customer will send you an email to recreate your account. But if you do this Wirepod thing, you won't need an account. Just an always on computer.
Okay I don't have a email to recreate my account but I tried the account recovery for DLL and it says it will send you a recovery email but nothing shows up after for a email. If we are lifetime subscribers and create a new account do we lose our lifetime subscription? We have 3 vectors basically gathering dust. @@anoraker
Unfortunately, no to both. The PC serves as the new "brains" of your Vector, so it needs to be on and on the same network. Some people use a Raspberry Pi for this reason.

thanks for the life saving vid :) - my 10 year old son is overjoyed to see him come back to life! only issue we have is that unless the computer is on and the bluetooth connected - vector cant seem to retain the wifi connection? any ideas?
So what this does is stop Vector from connecting to WiFi and then to some server out in the world (that was down for years) ... and instead connect direct to your device and have it serve as the server. So you need the computer on for Vector to be smart. If you don't want your computer to be always on, you could connect Vector up to a Raspberry Pi. Those are low powered.
A few people have suggested that switching it to one of the other English Locales (English UK, etc.) helps in that case. I'd start there. Switch it to one of the versions you aren't using right now.
You can factory reset him again, then have them go through the setup process. Since he's already on the wirepod firmware, you just get to skip that section. They'll of course need to install wirepod on one of their devices, which they'll use to pair to him.
Great to have him finally out of the drawer again. Is it normal to have to re-bind him every time? I used my laptop to fix him up, but now he only works if my laptop is on, and I've went through the process again each day. Is that normal or did I do something wrong?
The laptop serves as his "brains" and so he won't work when he's not on. He should repair automatically though. If you prefer something always on, you might consider installing wirepod to a raspberry pi instead, which uses less energy.

Just a follow up on this, macOS firewall seems to want to block this for some reason. Turning off immediately solves the problem. Been trying to find the right 'exception' to program to avoid turning off firewall.
I think Anki kept their servers going after they went bankrupt, then DDL bought their assets. DDL has finally rolled out their new servers to lifetime subscribers. They’re also in a bit of hot water with the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Yes, but the DDL servers went down for welll over a year... while they kept charging for the servers, made it basically impossible to cancel, and took orders for robots they weren't delivering (hence that hot water). So... yeah I have trust issues.

If you already factory reset your Vector, you can skip the step where I tell you to do that. (Or you can factory reset it again if you want to be thorough)
DDL keeps promising they're coming back any day now, but I don't believe them. They're just taking people's money at this point. Yes, unfortunately, this process means Vector will forget his age and past. You'll need to retrain faces and such. But at least he'll work.

Yes, wirepod becomes Vector's new "brain" as it were, so he'll need connection to it to stay smart. But at least YOU have control over it, and not some distant servers that can just disappear. Again.
@@CherylLesley-q9i Forever. Basically, we're replacing the cloud servers (that aren't working anyway) with a local "server" .. namely your phone or computer. Vector's smarts come from somewhere, and we're just giving it a new "somewhere." Without it though, he won't work (like how he doesn't currently since DDL's servers are dead).
At 8:30 in the video the block over your OpenWeatherMap API key disappears for a short moment. Thought you might want to know in case you missed it and then want to generate a new Key.
I looked around, and found a few reports of people successfully updating to Wirepod from that version on the Vector and Friends discord. So I think you should be able to do it. Did see one instance where a person had an issue with their PC, but switching to another device solved the problem.
You can do it with your computer (that's what I've done), just keep in mind that your computer IS his server (brains). So anytime it's off, Vector will lost a lot of his personality. The advantage to a Raspberry Pi is you keep that on all the time and it uses less power. But if you have a tendency to never turn off your computer anyway, might as well use it.

I managed to get him on WirePod, but is there a way to keep Vector connected after putting a device in sleep mode? Whenever I put my MacBook or Android Tablet in sleep mode, Chrome disconnects Vector with the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and WirePod connections.

hi, im doing this on a chromebook. I downloladed wirepod but it keeps saying "this device must be conected to wifi" even though it is connected to wifi. i would love some help for this.

The full reset often takes longer than you might think when pressing and holding, so you may not be doing that for long enough.

No, the wirepod doesn't need to be connected to the PC at all times, it's just a charger really. It's hard to say what the issue is, especially when I don't know the error message.

I've been trying to do this but it keeps getting stuck on the update part. Vector just shows the cloud cycling and never updates (it's been hours). I've made sure my computer stays on and doesn't sleep but It's still stuck on update part. I have reset Vector and tried again but still no go. Any idea how to fix it?

Try changing the 'Locale' setting into a different English (on the Web App dashboard, under Bot Settings). When I switched my setting from English (US) to English (AU), it responds to any time I say 'Hey Vector'. Experiment with the other one if you wish, but try changing how you say 'Vector' too (like Vic-tor); you do have to speak quite clearly.

Yes it does. Vector used to connect to cloud servers somewhere in the world (those are gone now). Basically your computer is now Vector's cloud server (brains).

What OS are you on? I've noticed a recent macOS update is making the firewall block the connection.
@anoraker I'm using a Google chromebook. I downloaded the wirepod and it says wirepod is up and running but after I cleared his data he's not even pairing with the bluetooth. I'm using a Linux terminal. He won't connect to wirepod I followed all the steps it says error 😭 I've only just brought him. He was preloved and updated to latest version

I have the original anki Cozmo or Cozmo “1.0” and it is really easy to break or lose his three cubes and they are charging 20 dollars for one!? That 60 dollars in total for all 3 cubes like wow.

DDL seems to have been returned, and if you were an existing customer will send you an email to recreate your account.
But if you do this Wirepod thing, you won't need an account. Just an always on computer.
Okay I don't have a email to recreate my account but I tried the account recovery for DLL and it says it will send you a recovery email but nothing shows up after for a email. If we are lifetime subscribers and create a new account do we lose our lifetime subscription? We have 3 vectors basically gathering dust. @@anoraker

Unfortunately, no to both. The PC serves as the new "brains" of your Vector, so it needs to be on and on the same network. Some people use a Raspberry Pi for this reason.

My vector remembers my name and it is not connected to the server or wifi or anything how is that?
I honestly have no clue, as this is information that should be stored in the cloud.

Not with a tablet, unfortunately. But you could do this with a Raspberry Pi.
thanks for the life saving vid :) - my 10 year old son is overjoyed to see him come back to life! only issue we have is that unless the computer is on and the bluetooth connected - vector cant seem to retain the wifi connection? any ideas?
So what this does is stop Vector from connecting to WiFi and then to some server out in the world (that was down for years) ... and instead connect direct to your device and have it serve as the server.
So you need the computer on for Vector to be smart. If you don't want your computer to be always on, you could connect Vector up to a Raspberry Pi. Those are low powered.

Hey, you know any way of improving voice command on the vector 2.0. It seems non responsive when i say "hey vector"
A few people have suggested that switching it to one of the other English Locales (English UK, etc.) helps in that case. I'd start there. Switch it to one of the versions you aren't using right now.

You can factory reset him again, then have them go through the setup process. Since he's already on the wirepod firmware, you just get to skip that section.
They'll of course need to install wirepod on one of their devices, which they'll use to pair to him.
Great to have him finally out of the drawer again. Is it normal to have to re-bind him every time? I used my laptop to fix him up, but now he only works if my laptop is on, and I've went through the process again each day. Is that normal or did I do something wrong?
The laptop serves as his "brains" and so he won't work when he's not on. He should repair automatically though.
If you prefer something always on, you might consider installing wirepod to a raspberry pi instead, which uses less energy.

Just a follow up on this, macOS firewall seems to want to block this for some reason. Turning off immediately solves the problem. Been trying to find the right 'exception' to program to avoid turning off firewall.
I think Anki kept their servers going after they went bankrupt, then DDL bought their assets. DDL has finally rolled out their new servers to lifetime subscribers. They’re also in a bit of hot water with the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
Yes, but the DDL servers went down for welll over a year... while they kept charging for the servers, made it basically impossible to cancel, and took orders for robots they weren't delivering (hence that hot water). So... yeah I have trust issues.

If you already factory reset your Vector, you can skip the step where I tell you to do that. (Or you can factory reset it again if you want to be thorough)

DDL keeps promising they're coming back any day now, but I don't believe them. They're just taking people's money at this point.
Yes, unfortunately, this process means Vector will forget his age and past. You'll need to retrain faces and such. But at least he'll work.

You probably have a firewall rule blocking port 8080 (or possible another program). You'll want to check for that, and adjust as needed.

Yes, wirepod becomes Vector's new "brain" as it were, so he'll need connection to it to stay smart. But at least YOU have control over it, and not some distant servers that can just disappear. Again.

You can do this from an Android phone, but anytime the phone is off or not near enough to Vector to connect over Bluetooth he won't work correctly.

@@CherylLesley-q9i Forever. Basically, we're replacing the cloud servers (that aren't working anyway) with a local "server" .. namely your phone or computer. Vector's smarts come from somewhere, and we're just giving it a new "somewhere." Without it though, he won't work (like how he doesn't currently since DDL's servers are dead).

I looked around, and found a few reports of people successfully updating to Wirepod from that version on the Vector and Friends discord.
So I think you should be able to do it. Did see one instance where a person had an issue with their PC, but switching to another device solved the problem.

Yes, essentially the PC serves as Vector's new intelligence (instead of some PC out in the cloud... that doesn't even exist anymore).

You can do it with your computer (that's what I've done), just keep in mind that your computer IS his server (brains). So anytime it's off, Vector will lost a lot of his personality. The advantage to a Raspberry Pi is you keep that on all the time and it uses less power. But if you have a tendency to never turn off your computer anyway, might as well use it.
How do I connect to vector every time I use this
Vector should automatically connect automatically every time once it's all set up.
