This is by far the cutest super mario 3 hack, and also one with great attention to details, such as the princess raising her skirt while running.
How is this running on NES with parallax backgrounds? Some trickery is taking place

@@inthejunipers the NES is quite capable of parallax scrolling.
While true, games like Metal Storm, Sword Master gave pseudo parallel backgrounds, this specific instance looks like an extensive mod of the SNES All-Stars version.
And I mean extensive. The background on 3-5 is animated (and has a lot more color depth). The sprites are NES sprites, but missing some artifacts (1-5 missing the outline for the rainbow note block is a tell). The sound is NES (even the distorted 1-up in 1-2 from collection too many too quickly is there) but no doubt this is SNES though with the save/continue pop-ups that happen. (There is an NES hack that adds this, but not with that pop-up noise.)
The backgrounds for the stages are all from the SNES version, but removed for the fortresses (the W-1 fortress whistle room is a tell: it's an empty space now).
I LOVE the costume choices. Fire flower is properly overly simplified like Mario's was. The Tanuki suit draws from the peek of it at 3D land. The Mermaid is just brilliant.
Though the idea of her in a frog suit would be delightful as well. You also can’t do the thing where frog Mario can run normally while carrying something and at full speed can run on water with peach having a mermaid tail. Kinda the only downside

@@radracer01Maybe because it isn't practical outside of ducking for protection. I don't know. I never really liked hammer Mario, to tell you the truth. The fact that the hammers go atan arc but only 3 feet in front of him sucked. I guess it's good to knock out armored enemies. For some reason I could never finish a level with that suit unless it was with game genie. Everytime I get it, I get hit or fall in a pit more than if I stuck with Fire Mario or just big from a mushroom. But I am feeling Bommerang mario from Mario 3d Land.
Honestly, a great way to wait and get hyped for Princess Peach Showtime.

Famicom version of super mario 3 is the best. I love how it kept the tradition of getting hit with a power up like a fire flower, raccoon tail, frog suit.. turns you into small mario like 1 & 2.

A crazy amount of unappreciated additional effort was put into this video. A more detailed background was chroma-keyed in, including making adjustments for fade transitions and on some levels parallax scrolling. I figured this out because when the All-Stars-style dialog box appears at 8:03, when it shrinks, you can see the All-Stars version of the overworld screen at the edges. This person played the All-Stars game in order to recreate the background used here from it. This is not done in e.g. 1-5 because there is not a clean way to chroma-key that level's inside/outside transitions.

Peach isn't a brunette with glowing pink eyes. 🤣 They should have tried to make her look more like the real character. It's possible that for a time she looked a little like this, but I think audience back then would have been shocked over her vampiric appearance.

Amazing sprite work for Peach. My only gripes is changing the P in the completed level to the color pink instead of black. Also the need to show the game in it's entirety when there's parts of a stage that didn't really get updated.

I'm surprised at how good the upscaler is at improving the resolution, yet does nothing to stop sprite flickering/priority issues and attribute clash of the right column when scrolling.
