  • The Future Rock Star's Handbook: How to Start and Maintain a Successful Career in Music!
Hi, I'm Aurelio Voltaire. I have been making a living from my music for about twenty years. I'm not super rich, I'm not super famous, but apparently you don't have to be in order to be able to pay your rent and your bills doing what you love. I've toured America, Canada, Europe, Australia and Russia several times over. I've released eleven studio albums and I've written some songs for the Cartoon Network show, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and some video games. Why am I telling you all of this? Because if this sounds appealing to you, I think I can probably help you to achieve something similar, or at least share my experience in the hopes that it will help you with your own music career!
Unlike a lot of other fellows out there, I'm not asking you for your money... this isn't some kind of scam, I honestly just want to share some of the things I've learned in the hopes that it might help you achieve your dreams as well! And I'm doing it right here on UA-cam.
So, if you're an aspiring musician, sit back, relax and hopefully there will be something in this vlog that you will find helpful.
If you are interested in hearing my music, you can hear damn near all of it here on my channel as I upload it myself!

YES! I originally planned to do this series on all aspects of art careers but it would have been too unruly. But indeed, the information is about the same for all types of careers in the arts.

Loved the video Voltaire. You came off as very genuine giving your advice, and even as someone who isn't a musician, I still finished the video thinking "Fuck yeah! Let's go do this thing that I'm passionate about!".

It took me until I was well into my forties to get over points one and two in this list. I think back and absolutely despair at that. But it want until I met a man, who created art in many forms, led me on a journey of discovery that I finally *finally* stopped allowing myself to be defined by others. He wrote some words that I have decaled onto the walls of my studio that bring me back to centre when I feel myself paralysed by fear. Those words? 'When darkness is drowning your soul and makes you feel alone in the cold, find me and grab a hold. This chalice, it overflows.'

After watching you grow and evolve since the mid 90's, I am happy you are taking the time to share your experiences and life lessons with other potential artist. I used to work security for D'con in Atlanta from 95-97. Always loved your shows and the before, during and after drinks. lol. At least once a year I have a random co-worker or acquaintance half our age go "wholly crap have you heard this guy he is awesome and funny" and it warms my heart that your music is definitely surviving the test of time. I love your music and hope you are able to continue for another decade, or two, or three.

I love how this video pretty much applies to a career, or any goal that one tries to achieve in life.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and seeing you in 1984 and now, also teaches us that you never stop learning (a disheartening thought perhaps when you have just graduated). Your video also showed the growth from a starting employee to a manager of the sorts. Very cool.
I swear, your voice is made of silk; its so smooth and eloquent.
You gots t'pring us more videos man (that anecdote amused me greatly).

There's a quote that I've heard attributed to about a dozen different artists, so I'm not going to try to attribute it. I've heard everyone from Chuck Jones to Stephen King and in the different ways it was worded this was the gist
"Every artist has 10,000 bad works in them, and the trick to being a good artist is to get all 10,000 bad works out as quickly as possible."

As a complement, I'd like to paraphrase this advice from brazillian astronaut Marcos Pontes:
For whatever you want to do, always: 1 study; 2 work; 3 persevere and 4 do more than people expect you to.
Number 4 is the measure of your commitment, doing your art in your own way and style is no excuse to do it poorly, always give your best and never loose the drive for improvement.

I've been dreaming of being a musician for as long as I can remember. It's always overwhelmed me, however, trying to figure out how to get started. Therefore, I decided that it was just one of those dreams that aren't realistic and should stay as merely dreams. I'm so excited for you to be making this series. Just this first episode has me wanting to record the various songs I've written and been too discouraged to do anything with. I look forward to future episodes!

Sharing all your collective experiences and thoughts in a way to provide aid and encouragement to other musicians is a beautiful thing. Even for someone like myself that does not have the ambitions to become a rockstar but still have other dreams in mind, a vlog like this can still provide a lot of useful information that can be translated into other artistic avenues, especially all of the first four points. Dice with a bass guitar though.... ah yeah.

I have to say, that this was one of the most informative and inspiring videos for artists I have ever seen.
I wandered onto your youtube page by chance. I was checking out the Steamposium webpage in Seattle and I saw your name. I was curious for several reasons, although one of them relates to a book by John Ringo called Under the Graveyard Sky, in which the band that plays the last concert in New York during the zombie apocalypse is lead by the singer Voltaire. I don't know if you knew about this, but if you didn't, I am pretty sure he meant you.
Anyway, it peaked my curiosity and I headed over here to listen to your music, (which I like by the way). I clicked on this link just because I had no idea what it was about, and again...curiosity led me on. The point of this is that, although it's one of the few things you don't mention, your advice and information about musical or written art, also relates to visual art.
I am an artist, I create in many mediums but currently am concentrating on polymer clay. Everything you said related so much to my life, and to others that I know, and it really touched me that it is something that is common in all art forms. The fact that you took the time to explain this, so eloquently I might add, is truly a wonderful act of human kindness.
I wish that someone like you had been around to say this to me when I was young. It took me many many years, and lots of other failures to finally come to terms with the fact that I am an artist. I would have been so much happier if I had started earlier. I find it ironic that now that my body has made it impossible for me to do most everything else I love, that I have come back to my one true passion and been forced to give this a try. I don't really believe in fate all that much, but if I did, this would be a clear sign that it was meant to be. I am lucky that now I get to do what I love, and although the reasons I got here suck, the fact that I have this makes my life a wonderful place to be.
Thank you so much for being an inspiration to people, sharing your knowledge and giving of yourself and your experiences. If even ONE person manages to avoid the mistakes we made, then you have done something beyond compare. Love your work, and love your style! I hope someday to see you in person and say thank you face to face. I saw the Seattle con too late to go, but someday maybe you will be back here and I can see you then. Till then, you have a new fan, and I will be eagerly awaiting all your wonderful music. :)

This is great and I can't wait for more.
Thank you a lot for doing this!
I would, however, greatly appreciate some guidance in terms of fighting writer's block, fighting laziness... And... Most of all...
How to overcome that horrible moment, when you have 2/3 of a song ready, but you just can't figure out what the music(or lyrics) for that middle part, or breakdown, or verse should be. :)
Yeah, that last bit... I've seen it become a large wrench in the wheels for a lot of musicians and lyricists many, many times. Specifically, when they don't have a band to help them finish a composition, say when the band is willing to "polish" and perform a piece, but don't want to (or can't) get involved in the core creation process.
