  • The Future Rock Star's Handbook: How to Start and Maintain a Successful Career in Music!
Hi, I'm Aurelio Voltaire. I have been making a living from my music for about twenty years. I'm not super rich, I'm not super famous, but apparently you don't have to be in order to be able to pay your rent and your bills doing what you love. I've toured America, Canada, Europe, Australia and Russia several times over. I've released eleven studio albums and I've written some songs for the Cartoon Network show, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and some video games. Why am I telling you all of this? Because if this sounds appealing to you, I think I can probably help you to achieve something similar, or at least share my experience in the hopes that it will help you with your own music career!
Unlike a lot of other fellows out there, I'm not asking you for your money... this isn't some kind of scam, I honestly just want to share some of the things I've learned in the hopes that it might help you achieve your dreams as well! And I'm doing it right here on UA-cam.
So, if you're an aspiring musician, sit back, relax and hopefully there will be something in this vlog that you will find helpful.
If you are interested in hearing my music, you can hear damn near all of it here on my channel as I upload it myself!

I mostly agree with you on the part about False Modesty.
I actually struggling a bit with that myself - on the one hand I'm excited to show people this really cool art piece that I've done, on the other hand, there's always that tiny nagging bit of doubt that's like "nobody asked for you to wave this in their face - what if they're just annoyed?"
It's easiest I suppose, if you go promote in an environment that fits what you do. Be it handing out goth music flyers at a goth club, or displaying scifi (fan)work at a scifi homepage etc.
But there is also a thing that's called over-saturation. If you promote the same thing to the same (limited) crowd of people over and over, if might actually put them off. I've seen this with a fair share of people (some of which realized it, others didn't).
True, the ones that voice this complaint openly (or less openly) are a minority, but I think there is something to be said for finding the right middle ground between too pushy and too timid about self-promotion.
I guess the key is to keep a steady supply of information (so people won't forget about you - even if you have an artistic dry spells where nothing new is happening atm) and to broaden a) the way you distribute it (because repetitions become repetitious eventually) and b) the circle of people who hear about it.
But I really like how shameless you are about the "dirty secret" of people wanting to be liked/loved/admired. Everybody wants that to some degree or in some way, but gunning for it is seen as anything from "pushy" to "slutty" to "annoying", but hardly ever positive. True, people who just seem to draw in crowds naturally are more appealing - because they're promoting themselves without the audience noticing. Just like a good actor lets you forget they're acting. It's easier for some than others.
So I guess the first step to making other people like you is to not give the impression that you completely loathe yourself and what you're doing. :-)

That's the one thing I hate about doing this. I've written maybe 1 or two songs in the last five years and haven't been able record a second album. All of my energy is diverted to promoting what little i have created already. However, I'm working on better strategies at the moment, so hopefully when I jump back in, my process will be more effective and efficient. :-)
Very insightful analogy about the difference between social media (the bar) and one's website (home).

The fake modesty one really hit me hard. I was dating a tattoo artist and when he took a look at my instgram page where I have my drawings displayed, he called me "cocky" for doing that and for getting my own drawings tattooed on me. He even suggested that I delete everything and only focus on school. Mind you I'm not a tattoo artist... yet ;) I'm a student studying art and trying to get as much advice as I can from other artists. Anyway, I thought to myself, "what is so cocky about me trying to show people how much I've progressed? I am an art student that obviously wants to make a career in the art field and I want to show people what I can offer to them. So what's so wrong with trying to put myself out there? Sure there are people that are better at art than I am but I want to show people my uniqness in art and how I can contribute my talent to the world. BTW these videos are so interesting and informative! Whether you're trying to be a musician or not I think these videos offer some pretty good advice for anyone :)

Is this funny or creepy? Loving Jamie is gonna kill me Because he's crazy And wants my booty But won't love me Or forget me. So I'll put used tampons Return addressed to me Made from a recycled tree Send them to where he be Ask how he liked the pussy See if he still wants me.
