- The Future Rock Star's Handbook: How to Start and Maintain a Successful Career in Music!
Hi, I'm Aurelio Voltaire. I have been making a living from my music for about twenty years. I'm not super rich, I'm not super famous, but apparently you don't have to be in order to be able to pay your rent and your bills doing what you love. I've toured America, Canada, Europe, Australia and Russia several times over. I've released eleven studio albums and I've written some songs for the Cartoon Network show, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and some video games. Why am I telling you all of this? Because if this sounds appealing to you, I think I can probably help you to achieve something similar, or at least share my experience in the hopes that it will help you with your own music career!
Unlike a lot of other fellows out there, I'm not asking you for your money... this isn't some kind of scam, I honestly just want to share some of the things I've learned in the hopes that it might help you achieve your dreams as well! And I'm doing it right here on UA-cam.
So, if you're an aspiring musician, sit back, relax and hopefully there will be something in this vlog that you will find helpful.
If you are interested in hearing my music, you can hear damn near all of it here on my channel as I upload it myself!

"I'm not super rich"
Your rich in character and are better than any rich man to me
First bump Voltaire
Spastic pug I agree, to me he’s so cool, and although he’s been through a lot, he’s such a informative, funny and down to earth guy.
voltaire taught me more in 27 mins that 7 hours in school!!
i love this guy, he is honestly like the kindest person ever!
keep doing what you do man you are a great insparation
"This is my laptop! Whose name do you think should be on my laptop? Yours?!?"
Love from Italy XD
21:55 It's bullpucky!! it's hogwash " you got me spitting my coffee on that part LOL... These vlogs are amazing ! Thank you ♥
How is it that I'm just finding these now? Such great stuff, and applicable to my situation.
You are a very rich individual and very generous with your time.
Thank you 💚🧡💜
Added value in promotion struck a cord with me. Great work!
lmao, oh my goth "Who's name do you think should be on MY laptop" that's the best and I love the comic book idea. Looking forward to the next video.
Haha, I remember we had this brief conversation on "shameless" self promotion via email
-Mike
Not a musician, but these videos are giving me the occasional good tip on the steps I need to take towards being a professional artist. Thank you very much!
Great advice across the board! Thank you for doing this series. (And the awesome music, of course!)
Beyond just being good advice, I find these videos really motivational. It's good to be reminded that success isn't just a lot of luck, there's hard work behind it.
love your work, it's very inspiring. very amazing to see your channel and watch your videos learning new things every day.
Honestly, these videos have been such an inspiration. Thank you for making them.
Hey Voltage! It was like you were speaking for me. I've been telling my buddies these very things for years now. Good to see you still kicking around man. Hope to see you again soon.
I'm SO glad I watched this, I can see everything I do from a different perspective now 💜
Thank you so much for putting up these vids, it has helped with our two peice band! Ta x
I love this series so much. It's inspiring and informative. Makes me feel like my art is worth trying to make a living off of.
Congratulations. I love this vídeos. I think they going to help me and my friend very much.
Saludos desde México.
I love the "Book of the Dead." I love how much creativity energy you put into everything.
Have to admit, I'm not all that good at self-promotion, it comes from being shy and worried that the impact won't be positive. Thank you for your welcome advice. Looking forward to your next video x
Then you'll love the next installment: "How to deal with negative criticism and rejection!!!"
That'll help me and my channel.
Yeah, can't wait to see the next part.. :-)
it is thing like this that make me look up to you greatly as an artist, creator, and a person in general! I am not in the business of music I am a cosmetology student and these tips have helped me greatly in a lot of areas because I have been watching your series and kind of twisting the context a bit to help me in my career that I am proud of! you rock voltaire :)
I could listen to you talk for hours. I have today. It's the anniversary of my oldest brother's death and I wanted a distraction. I found you through another video and have watched hours and hours of your videos. These are my favourite though (and Gothic Housekeeping of course). Thank you so much, most importantly for keeping me company through this day, but also for being you and being in this world.
Awesome! I love these videos! There's been a strange correlation between my personal progress and the release of these videos actually.
Great advice here, thanks so much. I'm ever questing for more avenues to share my work and network online about my film career (work in progress)
I do not know why it took me so long to watch these! This has been immensely helpful in the development of my own brand. I don't make music but, I do want to make a living from my art and I needed these lessons. Thank you so much for making this series. Its made a huge difference in my world.
hey Voltaire, I'm an aspiring comic writer instead of a musician, but a lot of the advice you gave for self promotion is still pretty useful to me! thank you :)
That moment when the things you say make more sense than a course on business XD
Great one man, really love it :3
i do not intend to start a music career because i have no talent in this field, but i am here because i know that for some people is very useful and also that my view and upvote Voltair.
This was a good video. Not many videos of this type around. Good work Voltaire!
Thanks again man! Its incredibly reassuring to watch these videos.
This is great. I loved the part about shameless self-promotion. I like working on bicycles, and have done some freelance work. My favorite shirt says "Overstreet's Bike Shop" in anticipation of when I have the resources and suitable space to set it up.
Como no había visto esto?, que tortura de guapísimo mi amor!
Thank you so, so, so much for sharing this info! Most people won't share trade secrets openly like this. I hope you find time to write that book. In the meantime maybe you could offer workshops on this subject? Maybe even piggy back it on your tour schedule?
Maravilloso, Voltaire! Such a great VLOG and #3 was so interesting with pre-Internet methods and moving into the online world. You made me laugh a number of times. Just one question... shirt tucked in or shirt out? I wear dress shirts too and that question has never been resolved! hehe
Shirt out. Always.
Shirt out NEVER!!!! LOL!
I am afraid our friendship may have reached an impasse, mister Voltaire haha
+hikariyouk Looks like i can't be friends with you either. What a sad day indeed.
Hmm... If I understand correctly, this video acts as a form of promotion too, right? Thanks again for making this series!
I would love some tips about effective time managment.
Every time a friend of mine has a birthday I'll send the "happy birthday my olde friend" I think it's awsome :D
'If you can't proudly walk down the street wearing your own logo?'
Here's 4 names who did just that; Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, & Tommy. We could also add Marky & CJ who still do.
I mostly agree with you on the part about False Modesty.
I actually struggling a bit with that myself - on the one hand I'm excited to show people this really cool art piece that I've done, on the other hand, there's always that tiny nagging bit of doubt that's like "nobody asked for you to wave this in their face - what if they're just annoyed?"
It's easiest I suppose, if you go promote in an environment that fits what you do. Be it handing out goth music flyers at a goth club, or displaying scifi (fan)work at a scifi homepage etc.
But there is also a thing that's called over-saturation. If you promote the same thing to the same (limited) crowd of people over and over, if might actually put them off. I've seen this with a fair share of people (some of which realized it, others didn't).
True, the ones that voice this complaint openly (or less openly) are a minority, but I think there is something to be said for finding the right middle ground between too pushy and too timid about self-promotion.
I guess the key is to keep a steady supply of information (so people won't forget about you - even if you have an artistic dry spells where nothing new is happening atm) and to broaden a) the way you distribute it (because repetitions become repetitious eventually) and b) the circle of people who hear about it.
But I really like how shameless you are about the "dirty secret" of people wanting to be liked/loved/admired. Everybody wants that to some degree or in some way, but gunning for it is seen as anything from "pushy" to "slutty" to "annoying", but hardly ever positive. True, people who just seem to draw in crowds naturally are more appealing - because they're promoting themselves without the audience noticing. Just like a good actor lets you forget they're acting. It's easier for some than others.
So I guess the first step to making other people like you is to not give the impression that you completely loathe yourself and what you're doing. :-)
not a musician. I am trying to make my own video games studio. Damn I love this channel! MAKE A BOOK FFS!
I just love these videos. I find them soooo useful and nice! -and I'm not even a composer! :) You rock!
(Oh, and I'm looking forward that next video!) Thanks a lot!
Great advice. So nice of you to do this just like that, for free, for us. Thanks Voltaire!
And of course before MySpace there was your Yahoo Group, I loved your Yahoo Group!
If I had a brand (well I kind of do), I'd put that sticker on my laptops in a heart beat.
I am absolutely loving the series so far! As a drummer and aspiring star, this is very valuable information. I'd love to hear you talk about recording and the studio process, depending on how much you know about that.
Good shit, Voltaire. I'm not a musician, but I certainly can appreciate this.
This was a great book/vlog!!!! :D
Damn. I absolutely love these. I'm not a musician or anything, but I find that a lot of your advice can help just for regular life. Take care, Voltaire. See you next video! :3
This video is great, very useful and very correct (I have done my research and have found a lot of similar results).
You should make more of this series, it is very encouraging and helpful not only to musicians but for everybody who is trying to sell their talent and art!
As an author this is exactly the short of thing I need to know.
this is awesome!!! thank you for these videos!
Superb! Just the mighty assault of information that I needed. Thank you for making this series, V. Promotion is an area in which I need to improve, and this video will be super useful and encouraging.
I love that series, and even thou I'm not going to be Rock star, I find it very helpful. I'm running a pop-culture blog and your advices will for sure work there as well, so big thanks from Poland!
These are things that need to be said - thank you. You are wonderful (Sharing this on FarceBook)
these are some great tips for my store Dreaded Jenocide
Great video!!! We love you, Mr.Voltty!!!!
Love the new series! It's so inspiring, even for someone who doesn't consider themselves a musician.
Also: Will there be a segment about not sticking band stickers to bathroom mirrors? lol
i had to laugh a bit at the commend, that everybody love themselves. The reason is a part of a german bookseries. ther was a chapter about false flagged codes and how they alternate the message: "Love everybody like yourself" -Kurt Cobain
Anyway, i really like your guide and your music (and also your comicbooks) an hope, that i can come to your shows again.
ps. sry for my bad english :P
Thank you so much Voltaire! I have always been a huge fan of you ever since I was little and this video has helped me out a ton! I am an Artist trying to promote my art and this has gave me a ton of great ideas!
Thank you so much for the advice Voltaire. I just published my novel a month ago, and with only to rely on social media, I hear nothing. No comments either good or bad. (For a time I was afraid of bad criticism, but I soon figured it out that it will happen anyways.) For now, I am super broke and struggling with my priorities. I need a website for my book. I literally feel like I do not exist (for now). What other web makers would you suggest?
Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing.
My best wishes for you always!!!
love you Voltaire
Love this one Voltaire!
Loving these, V! Xx
Absolutely brilliant loved this. The man is a genius.
Yeah no kidding on the self promotion thing. Remember when I handed you my gothic book card at the Glasgow show? I don't think you were expecting that. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it until I did it :)
this whole series is awesome! and goals are very important
Love the book idea with fan info
Nice video.
I met some people who doesn't like crowdfunding. Can you present some of this in a future video? I think is a good way to the new artists can raise their stuff.
This is the most usefull and informative video I've ever seen! Thank you so much!
That's the one thing I hate about doing this. I've written maybe 1 or two songs in the last five years and haven't been able record a second album. All of my energy is diverted to promoting what little i have created already. However, I'm working on better strategies at the moment, so hopefully when I jump back in, my process will be more effective and efficient. :-)
Very insightful analogy about the difference between social media (the bar) and one's website (home).
Great series! Please keep it up and going!
Thank you for sharing this kind of experience!
This is very uplifting :)
I actually like getting the free promo CD's outside of concerts.
Would the advice for authors and the tiny promotional things like pins, stickers, or the tiny comic book work for poets? More specifically if they write more grim or "serious"(in tone) poetry? Great video Mr.Voltaire, I thoroughly enjoyed it and forgive as I haven't watch the other parts yet but will do so with much haste, intrigue, and attention!
Tbh I am not going to pursue a career, I'm just not that kind of creative person, but I just like to hear you talking and what you had to say really appealed to me :) so thanks for almost half an hour of free entertainment :D already subscribed though, so can't do you a favour there... Hope to see you on a shown in Germany some time soon
thank you very helpful
The fake modesty one really hit me hard. I was dating a tattoo artist and when he took a look at my instgram page where I have my drawings displayed, he called me "cocky" for doing that and for getting my own drawings tattooed on me. He even suggested that I delete everything and only focus on school. Mind you I'm not a tattoo artist... yet ;) I'm a student studying art and trying to get as much advice as I can from other artists. Anyway, I thought to myself, "what is so cocky about me trying to show people how much I've progressed? I am an art student that obviously wants to make a career in the art field and I want to show people what I can offer to them. So what's so wrong with trying to put myself out there? Sure there are people that are better at art than I am but I want to show people my uniqness in art and how I can contribute my talent to the world. BTW these videos are so interesting and informative! Whether you're trying to be a musician or not I think these videos offer some pretty good advice for anyone :)
Sorry for my english but im going to try my best! i just want to say thanks for your music and lyrics, this is funny because i hear you for a ex gf but anyway! i hope to watch more "how to play" soon and in special from "to the bottom of the sea" cd
Where do I get your stickers at? Couldn't find them on the site.
I can write a poem about almost anything in just a few minutes.
where can I see footage of you performing?
💚 Absolutely inspiring, thank you again =^_^= I love your ideas for fliers and promotions--websites too! I've gotta find you on Facebook!!
I have a fear of too much social media--Twitter scares me... I guess I'm afraid to make it too big before I have enough ideas to put into play--should I just go for it? Should I hang back til I have better laid plans...? I can draw, write, and sing a bit--but I do not yet have a workable plan. I am afraid I'll get ahead of myself and disappoint any potential fans. Either way, you've given me much to think about ^^ Rock on \m/ ~Angel
Would you have any advice to give to someone who wants to promote their work, by making brands and making art to give but aren't all that great at drawing. I'm an author, but I can't really draw. Is there companies that will make you a brand?
I'm sure my friend Michael Litwin could help you out if he is not too busy and the price is right. He works as a designer for a local university and has a photography business on the side.
I'm sure we could work out a price that we could agree on, I'd be willing to pay good money for good work. Have him contact leonidas480bc27@yahoo.com if interested.
Honestly when you respond to me on FB it makes my fucking day.
It happens rather rarely. But still. I will squeal about it for months.
"What do Sasquach, the Loch Ness monster and shameless self promotion have in common?: (Insert commercial break.) I see what you did there, lol.
oh my god are you albanian????? I am from Tirana but I live in Italy
always loved your music!!
He's cuban.
That's the flag of Vorutania, actually, but it is indeed inspired by the Albanian flag. ; )
+The Lair of Voltaire i had no idea! thanks for the information
can You promite game selection chanel?
I miss Oh My Goth.
I proudly link "Happy Birthday My Olde Friend" to FB friends all the time. So much better than that lame ass old song. And I wear my band T-shirts all the time. They say "Will kill for beer" on the back.
NOT super famous? Man, you have no idea.
Yesss, 666th like!
i hate this comment of mine because i love voltaire but he is wrong some times i dont love my self nore do i care if the any one i know does as long as i can help those who have need of me im fine hated or loved by my self or any one else
Who is the one person that disliked this? XD
Is this funny or creepy? Loving Jamie is gonna kill me Because he's crazy And wants my booty But won't love me Or forget me. So I'll put used tampons Return addressed to me Made from a recycled tree Send them to where he be Ask how he liked the pussy See if he still wants me.
