  • For the first time this year, a short trip to the Plym Valley Railway, Plymouth's heritage railway nestled in the forest. The line is just over 1 mile long, between Marsh Mills and Plym Bridge Halt, with no intermediate stops. The line is relaid along the old GWR branch line from Marsh Mills to Launceston via Tavistock, and you can watch ‘Then & Now Plymouth and West Devon’, to see the rest of the line in its heyday compared to the present day. The hope is to extend the line to Tavistock, to a new station on the outskirts. I visited the line back in early May last year, when they were running a diesel, so I made sure that my second visit was on a steam day. This is a MUST-VISIT railway, it is extraordinary to see all the work taking place to restore the line to its former glory, particularly the new station at Marsh Mills, which is nearing completion. There is a selection of rolling stock, and running on the day was an 0-4-0ST called Albert, built-in 1948 for the British Sugar Corporation, and Ruston & Hornsby LSHH 0-6-0DH No. 429. On this windy Easter day, shots were taken at:

A friend and myself went to visit the person who thought of the idea of opening the Plym Valley years ago. He lived in Plymouth, I forget where, and we spent an hour or so talking with him. We then walked the line from Marsh mills and took some super pics of the scenery especially the line side waterfalls and the viaduct. I moved away not long after that so I'm really pleased to see it's now open. Well done to all of you involved in bringing his idea to fruition.

That looks quite a gradient to give the Barclay plenty of exercise! 😰💨

Yes quite. Whilst the line is mostly level, the gradients out of Marsh Mills and Plym Bridge are quite steep.

Utterly charming, even with the diesel leading. I will visit.

is there any progression in the rebuilding of Billacombe station building at Marsh Mills?
