Level Crossings in Cornwall - 9 Highly Unique Cornish Crossings - 2025
Переглядів 2,4 тис.14 днів тому
A short trip back to various level crossings across Cornwall, the county I call home. With 1 mainline and 7 branch lines, there’s ample opportunity to find a crossing and catch a train over it, whether it is by the seaside, in the rolling countryside, tucked away in the bright lights of the big city or the Cornish Alps, there's a crossing that's unique and distinct. With the crossings being spr...
Winter Steam Gala: South Devon Railway - 2025
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Місяць тому
A short trip to the South Devon Railway, for the Winter Steam Gala. Running between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, the South Devon Railway meanders along the River Dart for 7 miles. In recent years, the SDR have hosted a Winter Steam Gala to finish off the year. This year it featured an all-GWR line-up. GWR 28XX No. 2807 was the star of the show, visiting from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam ...
To The Rescue - Port of Par Tank ‘Judy’ Rescued at Winter Steam Up - 2024
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Місяць тому
Oh dear, this isn't the film I had in mind! A short trip up the road (for me) to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway for the Winter Steam Up featuring GWR prairie No. 5552 and Bagnall Saddle Tank ‘Judy’. Judy was timetabled for five return journeys over the Bodmin Railway, which has two of the steepest branch lines in the United Kingdom. The little Port of Par Tank was to be the show's star. Arriving ...
Christmas Train of Lights: Dartmouth Steam Railway - 2024
Переглядів 2,7 тис.Місяць тому
A short trip to the English Riviera, for the Dartmouth Steam Railways ‘Christmas Train of Lights’. Hauled by resident Dart River Rail locomotives No. 75014 ‘Braveheart’ & No. 5239 ‘Goliath’, the illuminations made 3 return trips from Paignton to Kingswear, stopping at an enchanted forest near Greenway Halt. The services looked full, with an equal amount of interest by the line side. Greenway Ha...
70000 Britannia and 44871 step into Christmas with Bath Christmas Market Expresses - 2024
Переглядів 7 тис.2 місяці тому
70000 Britannia and Black Five No 44871 lead two separate tours to Bath in winter conditions. 44871 was the first to arrive, with a Railway Touring Company tour from London Paddington to Bristol via Westbury, with 70000 Britannia arriving later in the day, with a Steam Dreams tour from London Victoria. The day began at Dundas Aqueduct, where 44871 is caught winding through the Avon valley. With...
Hemerdon - The Best Attempts of 2024
Переглядів 11 тис.2 місяці тому
Throughout the summer, the final shot of the Par and Plymouth railtours has been the climb, often assisted this year, up Hemerdon Bank. It's a mighty climb, the fourth steepest mainline gradient in Britain, a constant 1 in 42 for 2½ miles. The climb begins at Plympton and rises all the way to Hemerdon Signal Box, where a passing loop was removed earlier this year, from the steam days. It’s diff...
Coombe Junction Halt: The Least Used Station in Cornwall
Переглядів 4,4 тис.2 місяці тому
On a cloudy November morning, a short trip down to Coombe Junction Halt, the least used station in Cornwall on the Looe Valley Line. In this video, the station is captured in a rather dilapidated form, past its prime as evident by the poster on the station building, if you could call it that. The station and line to Moorswater was opened in 1879. Both have seen better days; the line is complete...
5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe Thunders to Stratford-upon-Avon - The Shakespeare Express - 2024
Переглядів 2,6 тис.2 місяці тому
5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe on two short trips to Stratford-upon-Avon in autumnal conditions. Starting out of Birmingham Snow Hill, steam hauled there and back, and there and back again, the ‘Shakespeare Express’ ran without problems, with 5043 leading the way. The tour looked relatively full, as did the platforms at various stations along the way. Full advantage was taken on both return journe...
GWR Night Riviera Sleeper Train caught at Lostwithiel

It’s a one of a kind (or two). Most locomotive hauled trains are gone in the UK but not this one. Two trains, one in each direction, connect Penzance in Cornwall to the capital of London, in the dead of night. It’s a like nocturnal animal; incredibly rare to catch in the day. But this train isn’t for the day as it has sleeping cabins, and a bar. It’s a hotel. I’ve been sitting on this clip wait...

After visiting the 2024 Cotswold Festival of Steam, it seemed foolish not to attend the autumn showcase gala. So, a short trip to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, on the last day of British Summer Time. Featuring an all GWSR resident line-up, locomotives running were: GWR 2807, 7820 Dinmore Manor, GWR 3850, SR 35006 Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co, a Class 117 DMU, BR Peak 45149 a...

Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 місяці тому
Just 10 days after the last railtour to Plymouth, 61306 Mayflower made a short trip to Plymouth for the day, hauling the Golden Hind for Saphos Trains. Starting in Worcester, the Golden Hind mostly to time all day, incurring problems attacking the West Country Banks, thanks to a helping hand from the Class 47 on the rear. Seen attacking 2 difficult gradients, at Hemerdon, you could tell how har...

Well done. Beautiful countryside. Your father must be quite proud of you.
Infertile, please . . .
Never forget the carnage at Hither Green in 1967 . 1007 and 1017 . 1007 loosing its trailers sides torn off and the tragic loss of life 49 people.
BR used the concrete platform sections from Perranporth Beach Halt to build the 'new' Falmouth station which opened in 1970. When forced to reopen the original Falmouth terminus in 1971 because of safety rules about turning back trains on the steep gradient, BR renamed the new platform The Dell, later renamed again to Falmouth Town.
Good to see the second platform track at Newquay.
Excellent footage of line chacewater Newquay coupled with sadness thanks Tony Simpson
The one remaining feature is the level crossing at Quintrell Downs site of the recent tornado!
Chacewater station closed whilst I was at Cornwall college Pool in 1963😊
Fascinating video! And you have shown how difficult it is now to trace its route nowadays. It’s been a great loss that this line was closed! Great watch!👍
Brilliant, I Love looking at Old Railways and I Love Old Cornwall, so it’s a Win Win for me 👍🏻
What beautiful old photos. I love the comparisons to what seems to be a less-majestic present day. The musical accompaniment is perfect!
What a great video, thanks for uploading! I spent my youth in Plymouth exploring the lost lines of Cornwall and it is great to see these former railways revealed at last! Well done!
The diesel could follow the train (about half a mile behind) and provide assistance if required
Unique is a very specific word, from the Latin, literally meaning 'one only'. It takes no modification.
Brilliant video thanks brings back memories of holidays in Cornwall, just a shame all those wonderful signal's and signal box's will disappear in to history soon so sad😢,
Very nice video! Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy the atmosphere and nature scenes to set the tone. The Coswarth crossing was weird with the lights going out before the barriers raised. And Tregoss was shocking...no barriers at all! I thought those were standardized everywhere in the UK that was not a pedestrian level crossing ?
Coswarth is a former open (AOCL) fitted with half barriers as an 'overlay' (+B). Design allows for wig-wags to go out once the motors start to power the barriers up. Tregoss Moor is in the minority of AOCLs assessed as lowest risk where +B isn't justified until either closure or complete renewal. Chapel AOCL (near Trencreek) is another.
Long Rock has changed a lot. Used to Walk from Penzance to look at the sheds and goggle and the Warships and Westerns. Loved seeing the Royal Mail carriages shine in the bright sunlight not far from station. Good times
My first encounter with a road crossing a railway was a farm track looking like it was still smarting from the rude interruption of that new fangled steam railway thing way back when the Bristol and Exeter line was ploughed through prime Somerset farmland. Little more than a gate and a phone for the varmur to see if he had time to get his dairy herd back to the parlour, thanks to this video, it's brought back a warm glow. Now living up Lunnon where the few remaining level crossings are double gated, cameras aplenty and activate much earlier than the ones shown in your video, I was increasingly pleased to see that there's still a healthy level of trust and common sense. Not only are there single barriers, but joy of joys, even none at all. Long may they last!
Why is there a diesel engine on the back, it never happened in the 50s when I was a kid no diesel at the back.
Delightful!! Many thanks.
My pleasure. I enjoy putting level crossing films together!
Great seeing what Captain Kirk does on his off days, though alarming seeing the short gap between thundering Hitachi and gates down!!
Think I saw you filming at Long Rock last week (camcorder on tripod with a “dead cat” attached). Anyway, nice film 👍🏻
Quite possibly… Thanks for watching!
A lovely round up, thanks.
The same station in Narnia : the lion, the witch & the wardrobe ❤
Ghosts of a past aged - and not for the better. See how rampant the growth of vegetation has been with no apparent attempt, due to 'costs' no doubt, to keep it in check. Then they complain of 'leaves on the line' from trees that were non-existent 60 years ago.
Thank you, I enjoyed that.
Having heard the Floyd cover, I'm sure Syd Barret would have approved of this post... ...just heard that Enya will probably be pleased to see this too. Keep up the good work!
so many viaducts in Cornwall and so few tunnels !
Great spot and great in general! Somehow, it felt wrong or sort of naughty on my layout when I were a little lad, so I don't think that I ever did it. Thank you.
Double heading too 😅
0:02 completely different scenes yesterday, that phone box looked like it was in the middle of a river
🤣
@5:07 I don't think I've ever seen a steam logo that blows down on its front end, all the steam logos I've seen here in the US have their blow down vents on the sides of the logo. This Christmas train is nice but I like the CPKC Christmas train that runs in both Canada and the US better because it runs at night and is covered in Christmas lights.
Great video from the Steam Gala :)
Thank you very much!
How do you access that spot by nappers?
That shot near nappers is brilliant
It’s a good find! Although it would be much better in spring
@ I think most spots are, apart from the river dart one with trees in the way, how did you get to that one?
Looks like Helston's Class 10 was really the star of the show! 🙂
magnificent
