    Lyrics:
I just stepped on a plane, my bags on the shelf
I find my seat in the middle and plan to keep to myself
The pilot comes on, says: "there's been a delay"
and I sigh, buckle up, and prepare for the wait
There's a middle aged woman on my right by the window
no ring on her finger, maybe divorced or widow?
She's drafting an email and from where I am seated
I can side-eye that shit, so of course I'm gon' read it.
    it said:
Dear McCracken... this is already great
dude's got a pen pal and a killer last name
she opens with an inside joke and she's hoping
to set a casual tone, her words carefully chosen
she was sure that her week spent in Houston would drag
but then a face from her past quickly changed all of that
the trip was for business, she's used to the travel
but this time she's not ready to head back to Seattle
Dear McCracken, I'd rather be off this plane
I can't admit the half of it that I want to say
Do I pretend, do I push you away?
I'm jet-laggin mcCracken and I'll give you, I'll give you your space
I can tell by the abuse of the backspace key
there's a heart balanced on how her words are perceived
she's retyped that fourth paragraph four times
swinging the tone back and forth until she's so satisfied
that he knows that even though their paths have diverged
there's an air of regret but not enough to reverse
and I am stunned, there I sit, completely convinced
that once you grow old you stop dealing with this
the uncertain, the hurtin', the feelin like dirt when
things don't work out by the fall of the curtain
she hits send, powers off, and we're ready to go
and I am sad for the passion that McCracken, he might never know
Dear McCracken, I'd rather be off this plane
I can't admit the half of it that I want to say
Do I pretend, do I push you away?
I'm jet-laggin mcCracken and I'll give you, I'll give you your space
Dear McCracken, I'm keepin this on my chest
I've said a lot of things but none of them what I meant
Do I pretend, do I try to forget?
I'm jet-laggin mcCracken and I wish you, I wish you the best
and I thought, I thought by that age
our broken hearts had seen their worst
and I thought that kind of heartache
was meant for the young but we're never too old to hurt
and I thought, I thought by that age
our broken hearts had seen their worst
and I thought that kind of heartache
was meant for the young but we're never too old to hurt
I just stepped off a plane, I've got one regret
I know I'll never get closure or ever see how it ends
I won't know his answer, what happens between them
why she kept her cards so close even she couldn't see them
what gave her such pause when she so clearly wanted
to tell you all the emotions she tried so hard to bottle
and I'll never know why she kept the honest truth from you
but Oh Dear McCracken... in the rough draft...
    in the rough draft...
In the Rough Draft She Loved You.

Great song!! No, I'm not the McCracken being referred to.

I have an urge to make an animation of this-

"I can tell by the abuse of the backspace key there's a heart balanced on how her words are perceived" Brilliant phrasing, I love this line.

I love this song. So many "lost love" songs are about the singer and some person that left or died or something, but this is just the outside view of a real life relationship that just didn't work out for some reason or another. It makes me sad that she didn't stay behind or at least tell him how she really felt, but maybe someday down the line he emailed her back and she did tell him, and now they're living together in old person love.

"In the Rough Draft she loved you." Well, I didn't expect to spend my Sunday so heartbroken.

Ahem, why aren't you famous yet? Seriously, this song really touched my heart. It's not many songwriters who can tell a story so perfectly, and the words were chosen perfectly. Looking forward to seeing you in a few years time with countless awards and signed to a major record label :)

I was so confused for awhile because my dad sent me this since our name is McCracken and I didn't know what to expect and he gave me no context. I'm impressed that you worked our funny last name into a song

six years later, and i’m barely discovering this song, and LORD is my heart breaking. the open ending is so bittersweet. “in the rough draft, she loved you” what beautiful words to end such a beautiful song! thank you 🙏

This song is the one song that got me into music. I know this is cliche but I've been playing guitar for 2 years and the piano for 4 and they have been really helpful creative outlets to express how I feel when I can't talk about it. And without this song, I don't think I would have ever started playing and listening to music. And for that, i am eternally grateful.

My professor showed this in my class as an example of a perfect short story.

I have been listening to this song for probably about 6 years and it never gets old. I show everyone I can this song. You created a legitimate masterpiece. The instruments alone are worth listening too. Let alone your lyrics. You can leave your entire voice and story out of it. It's an incredible piece. That line though. "I thought by that age, our broken hearts have seen their worst. I thought that kind of heart ache was meant for the young but we are never too old to hurt". How phenomenal. Shakespeare would be jealous to read that. You tell your story in such a short time it is inspirational to any aspiring writer in any format. You should feel proud for leaving such a fantastic foot print for us all to learn from and enjoy.

The line that hit me the hardest was "she kept her cards so close even she couldn't see 'em."

This shit needs to go viral. It's gone viral on imgur, and it sounds like it's gone viral on reddit, but god damn it needs to go viral on youtube.

Goddamn dude I thought I was gonna hate this song, and I just got to the "in the rough draft she loved you" and manly tears escaped my ducts. That was great!

One of the most underrated songs I've ever heard. Everything from the lyrics to the tune is absolutely perfect. Your voice also fits perfectly

  • @yurritt

Sometimes I think about the line "cause if you cared I doubt you would have made it past 'McCracken'" and then I listen to this again and think to myself that the only reason someone wouldn't be able to make it past this song is because they're crying too much.
