It's so true how the internet has blurred everything together. You see something tragic and then there's a meme right below. We hardly have a chance to process emotions and so it all turns to be numb
Your so right I didn't even notice it before though
It makes me think of Instagram stories. It goes from social justice to “look at what I ate for lunch!” really fast. Makes the seriousness of issues seem insincere.
Exactly. I'm not even entirely sure Bo knew what he had here, because this project clearly weighed on him organically throughout its production, but I'll be damned if there aren't so many subtle nuances in its craft that make it stand head and shoulders above any 'comedy special' in years, if not decades. In fact it's almost insulting to call it a comedy special. This is a feature length, one man virtuoso film that deserves every single award that's coming its way. I always thought Burnham was a smart and snappy performer, but this is visceral stuff that hits hard. I question if some will turn it off before the first 30 minutes or so are up not understanding where this thing is going, but all those people are missing the fuck out on what is right now the best film of the year.
9 times out of 10 the meme is about the tragedy
It’s funny how that argument is every ten years with the current mainstream consumer device. It was said about telly, radio, newspaper etc

I for one can think of no introduction more accurate or appropriate.
There is an adult radio station in germany, called "Deutschlandfunk", which normally only has documentaries, news and politics. The only times they play music its normally whenever some Jazzmusician has died. And only at 1am.
They played your song at least twice already, which actually means they accepted this song as part of a new culture, as something important that people need to hear. Congrats.

@@Afro-Socialist tell us more about what bo burnham wanted
The switch in tempo and intonation from 4:05-4:20 briefly gives the song a seductive, almost burlesque-ish feeling. The phrase “could I interest you” also implies a kind of temptation of the listener-don’t you want this? Can’t I persuade you? And then, brilliantly, we switch to the most uptempo, chaotic moment of the song. Suddenly, the phrase doesn’t feel like a request anymore, but a demand, or even a redundancy-they already have us. The seduction worked. Genius writing on so many levels

Thanks for your time good people.
“It was always the plan to put the world in your hand.” Followed by the creepy villain laugh and sauntering back into the chorus really drives home his point here: we never stopped to consider that maybe that was a bad idea.
I've watched this at least a hundred times and that part still gives me chills
I don't think that's the point he would make, just doesn't make any sense since that would literally be impossible to stop the next generations from eventually taking over. Maybe he means the state of the world in our hands, and the sinister laugh represents the lack of regret from any of the aging and dying generations? He is very cryptic and talented with his words
@@lusyff2390 Yeah it's not so much a criticism of the internet as a concept...but the cesspool corporation driven version that it's become.
I actually interpreted it as a play on words. "The world is in your hands" takes on a different meaning when you realize that the entirety of the world's knowledge and content is literally in our hands in the form of a smart phone that is connected to the internet 24/7. This is what we'd call a Faustian Bargain, in which the meaning of the wish is intentionally misinterpreted for the worse (think a genie or a deal with the devil). It adds up in my mind because the song thematically has the vibe of the devil singing, in that he is offering temptations with a side of pure evil.
I mean he literally lists out something great on the internet immediately followed by the polar opposite. As if he's saying, if you want the good you HAVE to take a bad. Also, this is like Hotel California and you can never leave. teehee
I said it elsewhere, but I believe he is comparing the internet pre smart phone. The internet pre 99 was simple because you couldn't take it with you. We didn't have "everything all of the time" because we had to connect to the horrible sounds of dial up. But with the introduction of internet connected smart phones, it is literally impossible to get away from the internet. Even if you wanted to, chances are you'll get push notified of your desire to do so. And if you throw your phone into the ocean, people would be using live updated maps sent directly to their phones via satellite to find what they expect is your missing body because you were presumed dead the moment your friends and family realized you hadn't posted your opinion about a cancelled celebrity on Twitter.

That's what we call searing cultural critique.
I’d say my favorite is “if none of its of interest to you, you’d be the first” because of how that is 100% true for every person. No one has gone on the internet and been like “eh, it’s not for me”
@@spoony8485 so true, right wing, left wing. Whatever your taste it is catered to and it's a drug to everybody's taste. Absolute pure liquid genius.
I fucking love the character that Bo is portraying here. It has the feeling of a villain song, one where this chaotic malevolent entity is trying to convince you to join him. There's this madness to this character. The mood swings, the sentimental sounding manipulation, an evil laugh to challenge anyone. Fucking great
it's a villain who won
YES 1000% FUCKING NAILED IT.
Indeed
Character?
To me, it feels like a villain who won. I think that was the vibe he was going for. The internet is full of things to keep us distracted and occupied, slowly chipping away at our attention spans and making us dependent. The truth is, we _are_ dependent now. A lot of people can’t function without the internet. So the internet, aka the villain, has won by making us dependent. If you really listen to some of the lyrics closely, like “Apathy’s a tragedy and boredom is a crime,” and “Mommy let you use her iPad, you were only two.” I feel like you can glean that message.
When you use the internet for the first time, this song should always appear, it should be like a starting cinematic for the internet
So that you log off and run for the hills, yeah
“apathy’s a tragedy and boredom is a crime”

It is, it's "Embracable You" by George Gershwin.
This song has the potential to define an entire generation
oh sh you’re right
It has
I believe it will... Gen Z juts like millennials are gonna go through so much more shit and this song is the perfect anthem song
He already does address a generation when the song slows down. The line about how it was before 9/11 and circa '99. The internet existed in its infancy so that's not "you," "you" are the ones that the world was waiting for to give everything into your hands. So seems like the song is basically for zoomers or anyone born/grew up with the developed internet.
I think it also implies an identity connection between the internet and that generation. I sort-of fall into it sort-of dont, myself. Anyone who has seen the internet knows its pull, but its "for" the people who dont know anything else.
Even if it doesn’t define it (which it probably will) it describes the generation perfectly
this is villain song indeed but it's a song of a villain who actually got his message across and won.
I’d like to see a movie like that where the hero thinks their helping but it turns out the villain is good and the hero is bad

the end of the song when he starts singing the chorus again and he adds a bunch of sounds on the background was genius because it makes you FEEL overwhelmed, too much going on at once but you cant stop listening, like the way he’s describing the internet itself

I feel like it shows how the internet is slowly driving us all insane. The maniacal laugh as he knows he won and then, "Here you go, your daily dose of insanity. See you tomorow >:)"
In the beginning, there are some 'zany' and 'wacky' sound effects because that's what the internet was thought of and used for - fun. Now, it's maddening, and the cacophony of those noises really sells the concept.
The song talks about getting hooked on the internet from a young age and Bo plays the dark side of the internet as a character here. Starting off just googling pictures of cats and talking to friends on facebook then as you grow you you're exposed to the more horrid parts of the internet. This final piece is like the dogs coming out to play. The scary clown noises are like the deepest darks parts of the web finally getting a chance to snatch at your innocence now they've lured you in.

Pure genius. The devil promises to make us masters of the world, but if we give in to these desires, the world will be our master instead.

I don't even know what to call this - it doesn't feel like a comedy special. Its not a movie or documentary. It feels totally unique and yet unrivalled. Never wanted to cry in a comedy special
Have you heard the ending of happy? The song about the burrito always gets me.
A UA-cam video
It's a zeitgeist.
I believe that comedians have replaced philosophers in our current culture as both look at society from the outside and make commentary on it. As such, I would call Inside a comedic, philosophical look at society during the phenomenon that was 2020. Sure there's comedy to be had with Bo, but I think it's his cultural commentary that's truly special. I'll probably be thinking about some of the ideas from Inside for years.

I've listened to this song probably a dozen times, but this time was the one where I really noticed the subtle production things, in addition to his solo voice and the piano. The stars, then darkness, then swirling lights, then everything in the background. The way that plinking instrument came on top of the repeat of the chorus before the slow part. The way I could hear voices softly singing "anything and everything" when he re-enters the chorus after the slow part, the layering of the children's laughter and voices, then layering his own voice several times to harmonize with the melody before bringing it all back to stark acknowledgement with just his single voice for the last "all of the time"
I can't believe that this is the person who sang

There’s something very meta about the fact that one of the top trending songs on The Internet right is now is a song about how awful The Internet is. And I just can’t stop hitting the “replay” button.
You know you could use the 'loop' option by right clicking the video.
@@Cookieforevah I don't think you can loop on mobile
How is it awful? As he said, there's just everything. You're the one who's awful if what you're after is "how to kill your mother" and such.

The way the song almost constantly has different noises playing in the background really nails home the feel of information overload the internet gives off at times.

I love it because its such a great way to represent shifting perceptions on the internet. When it was first booting up it was seen as the harbinger of a new age of digital democracy. Only for the corporations to slowly get this strange new beast under its thumb. Something with great revolutionary potential that was folded back into the hands of the powerful. A new form of control, now the internet is an Orwellian nightmare, where ANY engagement is good engagement, and algorithms shape our brains and dictate what we see. On top of that we had no Idea what how this new tech would change peoples engagement with life. This massive shift in the way we communicate and live, without a philosophical frame work to navigate this new world. The laugh to me at least is the broken promise of the internet. "It was always the plan to put the world in YOUR hands"
