    There is an adult radio station in germany, called "Deutschlandfunk", which normally only has documentaries, news and politics. The only times they play music its normally whenever some Jazzmusician has died. And only at 1am.
    They played your song at least twice already, which actually means they accepted this song as part of a new culture, as something important that people need to hear. Congrats.

    The switch in tempo and intonation from 4:05-4:20 briefly gives the song a seductive, almost burlesque-ish feeling. The phrase “could I interest you” also implies a kind of temptation of the listener-don’t you want this? Can’t I persuade you? And then, brilliantly, we switch to the most uptempo, chaotic moment of the song. Suddenly, the phrase doesn’t feel like a request anymore, but a demand, or even a redundancy-they already have us. The seduction worked. Genius writing on so many levels

      I don't think that's the point he would make, just doesn't make any sense since that would literally be impossible to stop the next generations from eventually taking over. Maybe he means the state of the world in our hands, and the sinister laugh represents the lack of regret from any of the aging and dying generations? He is very cryptic and talented with his words

    • @chickenspy1854
      @chickenspy1854 3 роки тому +122

      I actually interpreted it as a play on words. "The world is in your hands" takes on a different meaning when you realize that the entirety of the world's knowledge and content is literally in our hands in the form of a smart phone that is connected to the internet 24/7. This is what we'd call a Faustian Bargain, in which the meaning of the wish is intentionally misinterpreted for the worse (think a genie or a deal with the devil). It adds up in my mind because the song thematically has the vibe of the devil singing, in that he is offering temptations with a side of pure evil.
      I mean he literally lists out something great on the internet immediately followed by the polar opposite. As if he's saying, if you want the good you HAVE to take a bad. Also, this is like Hotel California and you can never leave. teehee

    • @chickenspy1854
      @chickenspy1854 3 роки тому +38

      I said it elsewhere, but I believe he is comparing the internet pre smart phone. The internet pre 99 was simple because you couldn't take it with you. We didn't have "everything all of the time" because we had to connect to the horrible sounds of dial up. But with the introduction of internet connected smart phones, it is literally impossible to get away from the internet. Even if you wanted to, chances are you'll get push notified of your desire to do so. And if you throw your phone into the ocean, people would be using live updated maps sent directly to their phones via satellite to find what they expect is your missing body because you were presumed dead the moment your friends and family realized you hadn't posted your opinion about a cancelled celebrity on Twitter.

      Exactly. I'm not even entirely sure Bo knew what he had here, because this project clearly weighed on him organically throughout its production, but I'll be damned if there aren't so many subtle nuances in its craft that make it stand head and shoulders above any 'comedy special' in years, if not decades. In fact it's almost insulting to call it a comedy special. This is a feature length, one man virtuoso film that deserves every single award that's coming its way. I always thought Burnham was a smart and snappy performer, but this is visceral stuff that hits hard. I question if some will turn it off before the first 30 minutes or so are up not understanding where this thing is going, but all those people are missing the fuck out on what is right now the best film of the year.

    I heard this song awhile ago. Can't believe it took me this long to post a comment. I love how this perfectly describes the mixture of emotions and vast range of content that is the Internet. Something so innocent can become so scary and vice versa, but really sticks out to me is the nonchalance of the singer. He just says something so bizzare and then moves on, like how society has become so desensitized to everything because of the Internet. As much as this is a commentary on the Internet, I also think that it is a commentary on society as a whole and how easy it is for us to get sucked in. Brilliant.

The internet is full of things to keep us distracted and occupied, slowly chipping away at our attention spans and making us dependent. The truth is, we _are_ dependent now. A lot of people can’t function without the internet. So the internet, aka the villain, has won by making us dependent. If you really listen to some of the lyrics closely, like “Apathy’s a tragedy and boredom is a crime,” and “Mommy let you use her iPad, you were only two.” I feel like you can glean that message.

      The song talks about getting hooked on the internet from a young age and Bo plays the dark side of the internet as a character here. Starting off just googling pictures of cats and talking to friends on facebook then as you grow you you're exposed to the more horrid parts of the internet. This final piece is like the dogs coming out to play. The scary clown noises are like the deepest darks parts of the web finally getting a chance to snatch at your innocence now they've lured you in.

      I believe that comedians have replaced philosophers in our current culture as both look at society from the outside and make commentary on it. As such, I would call Inside a comedic, philosophical look at society during the phenomenon that was 2020. Sure there's comedy to be had with Bo, but I think it's his cultural commentary that's truly special. I'll probably be thinking about some of the ideas from Inside for years.

      I love it because its such a great way to represent shifting perceptions on the internet. When it was first booting up it was seen as the harbinger of a new age of digital democracy. Only for the corporations to slowly get this strange new beast under its thumb. Something with great revolutionary potential that was folded back into the hands of the powerful. A new form of control, now the internet is an Orwellian nightmare, where ANY engagement is good engagement, and algorithms shape our brains and dictate what we see. On top of that we had no Idea what how this new tech would change peoples engagement with life. This massive shift in the way we communicate and live, without a philosophical frame work to navigate this new world. The laugh to me at least is the broken promise of the internet. "It was always the plan to put the world in YOUR hands"

      when i first found bo maybe 5 years ago or so it was so awesome, because here is this kid that clearly has what it takes to be one of the greats. not one of the greats yet, and its not clear whether or not he would blossom into one of the greats. it was so awesome to watch because up until that point in my life, all of the comedy greats and my comedy heroes were already super famous greatest of all time level - carlin, hicks, louis ck etc...but bo has given me the chance to watch one of these types of people grow from basically a child into someone who could stand toe to toe with the greats. is he there yet? not quite. will he 100% for sure achieve carlin status? i think it probable but not 100%. either way, its been an absolute honor and privilege to watch and im very much looking forward to all that is to come.

      He already does address a generation when the song slows down. The line about how it was before 9/11 and circa '99. The internet existed in its infancy so that's not "you," "you" are the ones that the world was waiting for to give everything into your hands. So seems like the song is basically for zoomers or anyone born/grew up with the developed internet.
      I think it also implies an identity connection between the internet and that generation. I sort-of fall into it sort-of dont, myself. Anyone who has seen the internet knows its pull, but its "for" the people who dont know anything else.

      it's easy to lay out the problems, coming up with solutions is the part nobody wants to do.

    • @__-cd9ug
      @__-cd9ug 2 роки тому

      @@darkcylander i respectfully disagree; one of the biggest steps when coming to terms with addiction in general is the 'user' acknowledging that it's a problem - and that is the first step, you're right in saying that there are other steps that can be as challenging, but acknowledgement is necessary and often difficult.
      Especially when the problem in question, internet addiction I guess, is a thing that happens on a massive scale and that is simultaneously very slow and insidious at the individual level (i.e. you don't necessarily see it coming as a person) and mind numbingly fast on a societal scale (i.e. it's only been a couple of decades and it seems like everyone in the younger generations is affected by it)
      We're only beginning to see the effects of it and we don't understand it fully yet, so trying to come up with solutions without doing more damage is a challenging thing!

    • @darkcylander
      @darkcylander 2 роки тому

      @@__-cd9ug I think I understand it, I think it really just comes down to bad parenting. parents find it's a lot easier to just let their kids be raised by screens. also dopamine detox is something that in crucially important but very few people actually choose to explore it.
      regardless of what the solution is though, nobody is going to do it, because people never like to be told what to do. they will either call it fake, a violation of their rights. or say that its bigoted or phobic in some way.

      I love how at 3:20 he intentionally brings the mood all the way back up. “your time is now, your inside’s out, honey how you grew” even visually by turning on the most vibrant lights. He sets a peak for positivity and reassurance so he can absolutely crush and twist it in the wink of an eye

    3:51 is just amazing -- how suddenly and yet so naturally the entire tone of the song shifts to something so much more sinister and foreboding as his true intentions finally seep through, like the snake oil salesman is letting you have a peak behind the curtain JUST LONG ENOUGH to hint that there's something very bad about everything he's been selling you, before going right back to the upbeat and frantic avalanche of content and information to catch you right back in the trap before you completely realize anything is wrong.
