  • In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart go back to the chateau chapel to share their research of small family chapels in their area of France and also to see what is above the mystery door in the chapel's vaulted ceiling. Patrick goes up to the chapel roof to check out the cause for the water leaks. Patrick and Stuart also buy some bicycles for some exercise and exploration of their local French countryside.
    Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

    What you have in the chaple roof is an air conditioning system. With Tallow candles and incense burning, the smoke would have built up without the opening. but in winter you could close it to retain the heat.

  • @allsaintstulsa
    @allsaintstulsa 11 місяців тому +40

    The sliding mechanism is probably for ventilation. It seems like a small space. So to help keep it cooler, you could open the door for the heat to go up and keep it closed for the winter.

    You could call your bike rides in the area, “Journeys Near the Chateau.” 😁 Congratulations on the new bikes, and your plan to use them frequently.
    Gorgeous flowers, as always. Those bits of film are always so relaxing. ♥️
    I wonder whether, when they put in the new roof, perhaps they removed an architectural feature. The fact that the beam is off-center in the chapel could be a clue (or not 😉). Perhaps something used for ventilation; you’ll know whether the chapel gets hot in summer. If it was a way to let out hot air in summer, it would make sense that you could close it in winter, especially since there was a stove at some point. Just wildly guessing of course. That’s what mysteries engender, right? 😁

    • @JourneytotheChateau
      @JourneytotheChateau  11 місяців тому +2

      Thank you! ❤️The beam is in the center of the chapel, it is that sliding access door that is not centered. You may be right about the ventilation.

    Hi Patrick and Stuart, good for you riding bicycles on those beautiful country roads. Good exercise and beautiful scenery. I love the way the two of you find things to do that you both enjoy together. It’s so refreshing to see couples laugh and love their lives together. So, the last time I road a bike was in Ireland with my daughter, son in law, my toddler grandson and the Irish relatives. We were riding bikes on a very narrow road just wide enough for one car. The beautiful flowers spilled over the road on either side. I was riding ahead of everyone when two cars going in opposite directions tried to squeeze past each other, so I had to move over onto the shoulder where the flowers were spilling onto the road. Unknown to me there was a very deep ditch under the pretty flowers that swallowed me into it!! I fell into the deepest ditch, and my bicycle fell on top of me! I turn to look behind me and my daughter, & son in-law were laughing hysterically and tacking pictures of me!!! Finally, they decided to put down their cameras and pull me out of the ditch. It’s still a topic of conversation. They turned it into a family video with me repeatedly falling into a deep ditch. I’m so happy I was able to provide them with entertainment at my expense. Just a thought about your roof, I think you can rent a cherry picker and fix the roof yourself easily. I notice a couple of chateau owners use cherry pickers to fix their slate roofs. Have a good rest of the week. Hugs! xx

      I had forgotten how much I enjoy bike riding. Hi Stephanie. We do enjoy doing things together. 😊❤. Now I have to say,
      Laughing and filming is just rude, while you are in a ditch. Although, in hindsight, I always laugh at my misadventures…. 😂😂😂😂. We will eventually rent a cherry picker. Just for this problem we cannot reach the area unless we are on the roof itself. 😮. Darn. We will figure it out. Thank you so much for the anecdote. ❤😊❤. Hugs and love from Colombe.

    Lost my comment. Perhaps you can use a stainless steel sheet to cover the entire wall and make a built in flashing to cover the old (its out of the way and wouldn't be seen), and put in a gutter to redirect some of the water from the top roof. The problem is there is no "out on that flashing to allow the run off and now its just become a place where debris gathers and becomes sponge. Anyway just a suggestion. You got this!😊😉😃

    Good morning Patrick & Stuart, the dahlias look a picture. Remember to dead head, cut right down the stalk from where it grows. They are so pretty love them. I suppose the slide door could be for ventilation, but the domed ceiling is quite high, there should be sufficient air and it is not a big chapel, just so sweet in size. I was thinking of making a beautiful oak cross, hang it on the wall or place it on the altar. That is not the most necessary item presently, my biggest concern is how to do the roof "safely". A Sky Jack I think would be safest, and wearing a harness but where would you attach it to in case of a downward slide? Doing/managing your own repairs are better but remember safety first. Looking forward to the bathroom renovation and wall paper coming. Do take care, stay safe. Kind regards, Elize

    I wonder if the roof opening was to allow air circulation, and the chicken wire to stop all the dust and bird poop from falling down onto the heads below? The bikes seem like a great idea, and I remember when I first got on a bike after 25 years, it was a hire bike at the zoo, and my poor poor perineum!!! I literally not sit down properly for nearly a week. I had to do a sort of sideways sit with a hip hitch lol......The bike seat had been as hard as a rock, which I didn't notice really, but certainly paid for later on. When we brought our own bikes after this, I had the most padded bike seat available :)

    True, I forgot, Stuart, being a private chapel there's no need for a bell and I still think the slatted roof is for air flow. Donna and Mary did such a wonderful job cleaning the chapel, it's worthy of restoration when you get to it. Interesting that yes, there would have been a kneeling step in front and that explains the gap. Is that an outline of a former something on the wall to the right of the altar? Love the tomets floor and hopefully the tiles are inexpensive to replace. Going to be such a pretty chapel.

    Hi there, have you a Henry vacuum cleaner or an industrial vacuum cleaner? Either are brilliant at actually vacuuming up ANYTHING. You could use one to hoover up the debris under the failed flashing? I know this sounds bonkers but it would work. Lots of contractors over here use Henry’s for clearing up building debris (not large pieces obviously). And my Henry I use to vacuum the patio (seriously it works). (I’m not some weird person who generally vacuums outside - but I’ve got those outside rugs and I found Henry can hoover soil and debris). From having visited a few private chateau chapels in my European travels and also the cathedral in my own home city (burnt in the late 60's) I remember clearly that the ceiling were originally wood pieces attached to beams on the ceiling that held the roof on top of the framework of stones. The wood was then whitewashed then left to dry completely before 3 thin coats of lime plaster was applied. Then the ceiling was painted with stars on a dark background or gold leafed (or painted) Fleur de lys were painted. Perhaps the plaster started cracking and falling to the floor which would account for the renovations of slate, cement and plank flooring...

    My Lords! Restoring the chapel floor to it's original terracotta, fabulous! Restoring the altar with a marble slab, even better. My advice as an art historian: take reddish marble. The contrast with the altar will look very good and it matches the floor to be. Furthermore, I advise to place a statue of the Holy Virgin (Notre Dame) on one side on a console and one of the saint to which the chapel was originally dedicated on the other. If that cannot be found or the knowledge about that is lost, my suggestion would be Saint Michel or Sainte Jeanne d'Arc. Both very French.

      My dear Robert. Thank you very much. I like the idea of reddish marble. Let’s see what we can do. 😊
      We can find the Terra cotta tomettes more easily. Definitely Mary. And since the chapel is dedicated the the Virgin, Donna was suggesting a Joseph for the other side. We have the option bf buying a large crucifix from 1640……. From a Polish monastery.

      @@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 My dear Patrick, thank you so much for your kind reaction. Do buy the Polish Crucifix! However, to place Joseph on the other side.... I wouldn't. After all, the chapel is dedicated to the Virgin, not The Holy Family. Saint Michel or Sainte Jeanne or .... Saint John the Evangelist (after all, the Virgin and Saint John were present at the Crucifixion) would ichnographically be a better choice. But that's my opinion. As for candelabra, it takes six of them. Looks at brocantes and antique shops for the quite common 19th century ones. Either Classicist or somewhat Baroque in style in yellow copper. And..... don't forget the Crucifix in the middle of the candelabra, that in fact must rest on the altar itself. Another, bigger one over it (the Polish one) is fine and not double. That one functions as an altarpiece, most certainly in combination with the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist flanking the Polish Crucifix.
      You might also consider framing the whole, by using a different paint colour behind the altar, for instance a shade of light blue (colour of the Virgin). And don't be shy to gild the consoles or ornaments on the altar.
      I've suggested before to put in a plaster cassetted vault over the present wooden vault. Please consider that. Yes, that costs. Yes, it's not original to the chapel, but you're allowed artistic licence! Every generation has added to the chateau, as you have done already with your fabulous kitchen. Don't hesitate to do it in the chapel. Make it upmarket country glamour!

      The tractor bucket is lower than the ladder. But a good thought! 😀

    Try using a leaf blower to clean the gutters you can’t reach.

    Dalen that was bizarre. Sounded like heart and seizure. You can’t die again once you’ve already died. Can you? Definitely sounds like they were having some major issues. In addition to the sisters arguing. Mary Ellen comes to the rescue again. Spirits call her Ellen.
    That was fascinating. Thank you, Dalen. Thank you, Mary Ellen. Love, love, love from California.💜🤗😎🫶🇺🇸

    Good luck on the roof repair…. If only you were Spider-Man, you could zip right up there 😂. Be careful.
