Lyrics below:
Sickly sweet, his poison seeks
For the young ones who don't understand
The danger in his hands
With a jaundiced wink, see his cunning slink
Oh, trust in me, my pretty one
Come walk with me, my helpless one
Candyman
Syrup lies upon your tongue
Gelatin saliva spills
A flash of a guillotine, a smile
Candyman
Oh, Candyman
No pity for him
Their misery screams unspeakable things
No pity for him
Their misery screams unspeakable things
Candyman
A cool missile, yes, it's in his smile
With open arms to welcome you
Beware the masked pretender
He always lies, this Candyman
Those lips conspire in treachery
To strike in cloak and dagger, see?
Candyman
Oh, Candyman
And all the children, he warns, "Don't tell"
Those threats are sold
With their guilt and shame
They think they're to blame for Candyman
Candyman

There is no other
I wish I was still a teenager when this song came out and I just thought it was a cool song. That was long before I knew everything about this song. It always guts me to hear it and to think about what Siouxsie Sioux went through as a child. For those of you that don't know (if you don't want to know stop reading now) this song is about the sexual assault of Siouxsie Sioux at the age of nine, she and a friend were sexually assaulted by a stranger. The assault was ignored by both her parents and the police, and was not spoken of in the family. The incident and its later treatment would lead Siouxsie to distrust adults. Years later, she stated:
"I grew up having no faith in adults as responsible people. And being the youngest in the family I was isolated - I had no one to confide in. So I invented my own world, my own reality. It was my own way of defending myself - protecting myself from the outside world. The only way I could deal with how to survive was to get some strong armour."

Thanks so much.
@@lucius0malfoy for what?
@@wildechild5 For share this valuable information.
@@lucius0malfoy you are very welcome. It is extremely sad when happened to her and my heart broke when I read the interview. It sickens me to know there are people out there that do this especially to children. It also sickens me that her parents did nothing for her.
@@wildechild5 i feel the same i guess.
Siouxsie's hair is everything
The only other that comes close, imo, is Patricia Morrison of The Sisters of Mercy. And Elvira.
Her hair is on fleek
Siouxie’s everything is everything!
yes!!!!!
>>> Robert Smith has entered the chat
Her voice was in top form on this album, and in my personal opinion this was the peak of her career. I never get tired of hearing this album- seriously. I've been listening to Tinderbox since 1987.
I think it's their crowning glory.
What i love about the 80s is, that you had so many artists from completely different genres, coming to the pop charts world with their definition of pop music...and it was an extremely vivid and exciting time to live
The instrumentation and the vocals in this song are literally amazing. The way Siouxsie plays with her voice and responds to herself in different tonalities is beautiful. The drumming and the guitars are fantastic. I don't know any equivalent to this brilliant and original style even among other great bands. However the story behind this beautiful song is dramatic and heartbreaking when you know it relates to Siouxsie own childhood.
In my opinion, this song doesn't get enough love. I'm listening to it over and over again since months.
And I for years ;-)
And I for decades.
Indeed for decades now !
Indeed, for decades now. Saw them on this tour, OMG mind blown. Feel strange for having watched it so often, but just realized Siouxsie is in both a white gown, and a black gown. Sounds familiar... ;-)
I'll be listening for centuries)))
Jeez - that key change at 2:00 just sends shivers down my spine. She sings with such an appropriate theatricality that I just have to listen again.
I have the exact same reaction.
That's thanks to the bassist, el maestro Steven Severin and that descending bassline
The amount of key changes in this 4-minute song is ridiculous. I love it. Only Siouxsie and the Banshees!
Siouxsie is easily among the greatest frontwomen of all time.
Sure, what a performance !!
I’ll second that.
She is the greatest
The greatest front woman was indeed Mary Jane Midland, however, she too drew a lot of inspiration from Sioux
Her and Blondie don't come much better
That guitar riff and engineering when the main melody kicks in. Sheer 80s gothic sound that just doesn't exist now.
hi
80's gothic sound still exists, kinda. Listen to "she past away".
Supernyan Kitten Listening to that Sanri by them. Vocals are straight from Fields of the Nephilim and the drums are obviously complete Sisters of Mercy! Cheers! Will need to listen to more!
Ryan Patrick Fields of the Nephilim ?? Really? No comment
Rossano Medici Listen to anything from Dawnrazor and tell me it isn't?
“If you study modern groups... none of them are as good as Siouxsie and the Banshees at full pelt." -Morrissey (of all people.)
Morrissey is amazing 😍😍😍
@@alexisarrizon6799 He likes to slag people off though. He said some not very nice things about her in his book, even comparing her to Myra Hindley, the child abuser/killer!
Very true . Almost criminally underrated. Super great rhythm section!!!
@@alexisarrizon6799 no
@skinny from the south oh yes, because racist, homophobic, sexist, assholes are absolutely amazing. Thank you for helping me realize those are actually fantastic qualities in a person ❤
Siouxsie and Grace Jones are my female icons. I love their talent and individuality.
Both phenomenal ladies.
🙋
Mine too
I had totally forgotten how awesome my teenage heroes were! Dramatic with poetic lyrics, passion, atmosphere and style
Queen Siouxsie Is seriously dark and gorgeous in this tour de force video gem.
Such a dark and serious subject (CSA) but she puts it into a song so perfectly, mystical with a dark undertone.
maybe the world;s too big.
She was molested at 9 y.o., made her stronger over the years and not the opposite
@@albarmonty How do you know that it made her stronger? That sort of thing never leaves you.
@@GypsyFairy85 True, but :The most damaging aspect was that the assault was ignored by her parents. The episode became an unspoken item. From that moment, she started to acquire disrespect for adulthood. Years later, she stated: "I grew up having no faith in adults as responsible people. And being the youngest in the family I was isolated - I had no-one to confide in. So I invented my own world, my own reality. It was my own way of defending myself - protecting myself from the outside world. The only way I could deal with how to survive was to get some strong armour".
It's about Dean Corll, the "Candyman", who lured teenage boys with candy, and then he would torture them before killing them. That's what this song is about, it's what the 1992 movie is based off of. It has absolutely nothing to do with sexual assault, but child murder carried about by one of the most heinous serial killers in American history. You posers don't know shit, these goths from the 80's didn't care at all about the shit you care about, these songs are about history, SciFi, art, love, but there aren't any that were written about sexual assault. You posers would have been stabbed in the day, for being posers. Goth/punk isn't soft music for soft people, MTV just made it that way. Go back to listening to Taking Back Sunday.
That voice. Never again will the Universe produce something like her - nobody would have the guts to attempt it. All those perfect glissandos and coils and sparks and spikes and spirals and ripples an sparkles and snarls.... she sounds supernatural. Her voice is like calligraphy and everyone else's is a scribble.
Siouxie and the banshees totaly own this
1:25 that’s one of the most beautiful and ethereal sounds I’ve heard a guitar make. The tone is amazing.
🙋
John McGeogh shaped music as we hear today.
@@J.X.Sanchez777 That's Carruthers...
The change at 2:01 is genuis, a true diva, a siren , an Egyptian cat, they will always be timeless, and yes for me it was tenderbox.
Thx Nicole stone
I agree this change at 2:02, is awesome, what a bridge in the middle of a rock song. And this bassline is brilliant
Tinderbox is one of the best LP's of the 80's
I approve this message ;-)
I'm going with Juju

I f'n love that album. Every track is epic. Cities, this unrest... perfection!!! 😚😚😚
My favorite album ever record !!
A very underrated album at the time.
Tinderbox is my favourite Banshees album. I wish Siouxsie would release a new album. She is sorely missed.
Her voice is shot- she still 🚬
This unrest is my fav it's so dark
there should be a radio station with this song on repeat
I thought Siouxsie and the banshees did some fantastic songs, but for whatever reason this track always stood out, and remains a favourite.
So creative. They are brilliant, esp SIOUXSIE.
I'm just here to reaffirm that Siouxsie's everything is still everything.
Bassline of Steven Severin as well as his style and moves are sick!
From a childhood disaster, Siouxsie and her mates made a real jewel 👌
Siouxsie is so glamorous.
John Valentine Carruthers. A very underrated guitarist. This is a gem from my youth. Love you Siouxsie.
I agree....
John and Klein never get enough love. Still, it boils down to Budgie, Steven and Siouxsie. They are a deep bass and rhythm dark tribal collective.
Can anyone tell me what did Carruthers become after the Banshees ?
John McGeoch?
Yeah but John mcgeoch was better in every way
Dear siouxsie, thank you for this healing song.
Siouxsie with that mesmerizing voice and those eyes!!!
Her voice gives me absolute chills!
This band is so beautiful. Each member is just gorgeous.
I didn't like their music when i heard them for the first time in my teen years. But now, in my 20's, going back to the post-punk i cant stop listening to this song and City of Dust. Her vocals are so good i dont know how to explain it, its so good 😳💗
Try also with Israel, Arabian Knights, Spellbound, Into the Light, Icon, Sin in My Heart, Hong Kong Garden, Painted Bird, nothing less than fantastic.
Tinderbox is a spectacular album in total. I was hooked when I first heard it, and that was a LONG time ago... it still moves me all these decades later.
This is a wild ass song!
This was the first song I've ever heard by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I remember hearing it when I was younger and then my dad gave it to me last year on cassette. It's one of my favorite songs. Not to mention, the breakdowns on this song are legendary.
Out of curiosity: What did you think of the song, "This Unrest"? Some heavy stuff...esp. the vision of "metal and flesh" fusing; considering where technology and humanity are in the 21st Century.
Was 22 years old....worked as chimney sweep...woodstove chimney installer...Lived house sitting ma's home by the river...country highway...High school four years prior We had Swimming Horses....Happy House!! etc...Would crank this!...Years later...Seven days to xmas 2016! Age 53 I am Loving this! Eighties are gone....but the music Lives on! creative music like this existed for that period! We are our muses age...But not the passion nor magic!!
52 still dig it.other punkstuff me have still
zhu come close..lol
AMO ESSA MULHER. PRA MIM É A MAIOR REFERÊNCIA DO PÓS PUNK, E LINDA TB.
Severin's bassline in this.......magnificent!!!
All kneel to the greatness of Sioux's sioux
Siouxsie Sioux is forgotten in the vanguard of music! This song is a prime example of post punk and, if you care to explore her, she was a punk queen often sharing the stage with other "forgottens", such as The Plasmatics!
I love Wendy .O.Williams!
Speak for yourself! This is one of my all time favorite bands!
Forgotten? Na, UA-cam, your wrong there. Somehow my brain reminds me of songs I haven’t listen to for years. Better than a digital playlist.
Saw the Plasmatics at a punk bar in Chicago. Wendy O Williams, severed the fret board from a Flying V guitar with a buzz saw, and hurled it like a spear into the audience. Pretty wild.
Not Forgotten!
The way she says sweet is so haunting 🖤
She is a true music Icon 🖤🖤
She’s more than beautiful, she’s got magic.
OMG ! Siouxsie hair and makeup is so PERFECT! It blows my mind. Love her so much.
Back in the 80's I had two big crushes, one was Debbie Harry and the other was Siouxsie Sioux. Seeing her in this video it all came barrelling back to me. My god she was beautiful.😍
This besides Christine is one of the greatest issues of point by this wonderful intelligent woman who has brought to light our dangerous pandoras box in this volitile world.Always a point and a lesson done in her creative and beautiful voice.I am 54 and i loved her then and still love her to this day.Thank you Siouxsie Sue.
Siouxsie Sioux 🙋
Great song. Siouxsie looks fantastic in this video, they did a really good job lighting her with that purple color.
There's not a lot that moves me, but Siouxsie And The Banshees.... ALWAYS ! They are pure genius in every way and on so many levels. They don't get enough credit.
Amazing, intricate, creative guitar work. Definitely at their peak, the whole band. That entire album is one of the best of the 80s.
🙋
One of my absolute favorites with Siouxsie, love the bassline, guitar and drumplay, vocals, basically everything... ✨🎧👌✨
“A cruel missile, yes it’s in his smile...with open arms to welcome you, beware the masked pretender...”. I love this song so much.
no it is a COOL missile
i will forever and always love Siouxsie and how her (and the bands) music saved my life...
Oh Siouxsie Siouxs, what a great artist, really an artist. What a powerfull singer
One of my favorite songs by Siouxsie and the Banshees. :D
Tinderbox was a fantastic album. A lot of people tend to point directly towards Juju as their best record and that's valid. I've just always admired this album a great deal however. I think it's amazing.
Every song is perfect! Don’t dislike a single song on the record.
Only 8 tracks in this album, but in my humble opinion, there are 8 masterpieces!
Candlemass fan huh?
@@AdolfStalin Forever and always
@@massivegat5087 good, great band.
When that deep background vocal came in, it scared me. Sounded like a ghost calling for me
yeah same first time
Maybe that's the point, taking in view the song talks about child abuse
Just can't stop watching that video. A masterpiece!
Robert Smith and Morrissey were fans of Siouxsie's early music . Robert Smith said that Banshees were only with the brilliant band Wire the two bands that really mattered. Morrissey was always a fan of Siouxsie but couldn't deal with her confrontational manner. Siouxsie is a very strong woman. She can burn a hole through them.! They don't like they admire her!
Siouxsie is wonderful as an iconoclastic, irreverent, romantic goddess/siren. The video is full of delightful overlays. The whole band (the guitar is notable re: timbre and chords) are so effing good here that they're evocative of an early Cocteau Twins. J'adore! :-)
The Banshees - my first introduction to this genre... what an influence!
I love this lady. she is an icon. x
When I was young, she was about ten years older than me, and I used to think she was a beautiful freak. I still do. She's the best.
To all the young people...I bet you wish you were born in the early 70's to experience this in the 80's as a teenager.
So many great memories with her music.
I love the steady drumming in this incredible haunting song. Budgie and Siouxie ♥
Fantastic sound great band members and Souixsies haunting voice and fabulous fashion is the perfect ingredients for a fantastic punk band that has still stood the test of time she’s a iconic lady who has been imitated for years it’s never boring no matter how many times you hear and watch them still one of the best things to ever come from punk music she was born to do this and entertain us
Tinderbox was her opus in my opinion. I've been a fan since 81 and still have spellbound in vinyl.
💟 Ya! Regards from caracas
What a cool pop single! They are warriors: the beat is an attack on the senses and this sinuous bassline is a marvel. The guitars shimmer, the lyrics are subversive and they even manage to slide a word like "guillotine" into the a-side of a single. A tour de force & this video is so beautiful, great picture, great shots.
Still remember the afternoon I purchased this album (along w/ TTLG) in 1987, brought it home, and got probably the best education in Gothic Romantic poetry and language in my life from this remarkable Lady. Tinderbox was a classic right after its first play.
I feel the same. I heard it for the first time a couple years ago when I was really getting into goth and seared itself into my brain ever since.
We owe so much to this band....
This band is incredible she's amazing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍺❤️❤️
The video is amazingly shot and edited! I just love how the colour overlaying is done, looks so modern even by today's standards!
I love the guitar in this song!
John Carruthers is SO underrated.. probably because he's only featured on one of their albums but all guitar parts are sublime!
Literally all the Banshees guitarrists are legends
I agree with you 100%!
This guitar part is surprisingly more difficult to play and get right than it sounds.
She's just so enchanting ♥♥♥
Love Siouxsie and the Banshees! Her music sounds better than alot of stuff that's out now. Is it fair to say that she was ahead of her time?🤔
Because I really think so.
I don't think she was ahead of her time, I think that the whole scene was a decade ahead of it's time, and she was undoubtfull the queen of aheadness ;)
@@alterego3590 You get no argument from me on that point, well said!👍
From 2:00-2:30 one of the greatest fortes in music history!
Those eye brows rock!
Best guitar lick ever.
This song rocks so hard.
Perfection has existed in the world of post punk music. What the hell is happening nowadays?
Her face is beatifull. She's my dark queen
Sure is beautiful!
Siouxie is a gorgeous goth girl😍😍🥰🥰😍💞💞💞💞💞
Best S&TB song, best guitar riff and best album
So many years ahead.
Now we have Harvey Weinstein and the royals...brave enough to have sung about what she knew was going on everywhere. Full kudos to you Siouxsie Sioux...a visionary.
I think I remember reading that she wrote it about her own experience of sexual abuse as a child.
Weinstein will be joining Epstein one day.
this song is actually based on a certain dean corll, who was basically the predecessor to john wayne gacy, a pedophile and a sexual sadist who tortured and killed killed well over 28 children and teens, his mother owned a candy factory right next to a primary school and dean used to work there while handing children from the school free candy, hence the nickname - candyman, there's a great book on the topic written by Jack Olsen, an absolutely amazing true crime writer, absolutely bone chilling story.
I can't get over how good this is.
Right! Brillant!
Without question their best song, fucking unbelievably perfect
Nyah nyah nyah nyaaah!
Love their music and her voice is so amazing. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
I listen to this at least once a week. Tinderbox is the best album in my opinion.
It routinely changes for me. There's some good ones. Lately it's been 'Once Upon A Time' for me.
I agree. I absolutely loved and still love this album but she lost me after the "Through the Looking Glass" album. She moved away from the dark imagery and topics towards more pop friendly music and I was very disappointed. I still enjoy her body of work from the "Looking Glass" and all the way back to "The Scream", though.
Maiden gothic, great band dark rock 80,s, Amazing!!!
So many memories come flooding back
Grew up with this amazing woman. Epic xx
Masterpiece
Beautiful and haunting
listening to this on my Walkman being in my own world because. my parents were not there....not whining just speaking truth.molested by step-dad blah blah.... music gave me comfort.
Life changing event right here... 😊
Love this song a lot as it is one of siouxsie and the banshees best songs
you can see why Morrissey likes her, superb sound!
Probably the only thing in common between Morrissey and Robert Smith.
