I been having some oil consumption issues/ burning oil and rough idle. Changed out the PCV, rear vent tube, spark plugs, and ignition coils. Still an issue. Learned from you to look into the Valve cover as its part of the PCV system and does fail over time. (Min 0:45) I ordered a new OEM valve cover. I examined the old valve cover and noticed it was warped and broken on the bottom. i stuck a small flashlight into one of the ports and you can actually see the light shining through. Happy i changed it out. Hope it helps with any oil consumption. The Engine definitely runs smoother. Thanks for all you do for your viewers and customers.

People: Please please please take Charles' advice on connecting the back hoses before screwing down the cover. The larger hose is a bitch and a half to move. I had to undo all the goddamned cover screws a second time to get that hose back on. In fact, I recommend re-attaching the band clamp (hose clamp in this video) before moving it so it doesn't pop off while you're positioning the cover. I don't understand why we need to mention the single use band on the larger hose. It doesn't seem necessary to mess with this clamp further back at all. Another tip: I found it helpful to follow the torque sequence even when initially inserting the screws. It just seems to go down easier that way. Finally, a small correction 3:32. That's not your timing belt cover. It's your serpentine belt inspection cover. Timing chain is on the right side. But I'm sure Charles knew that and misspoke. Awesome video!
Thanks man. I'm an aircraft mechanic and a forty year gearhead. I'd be able to work through this myself, but having seen your video, it will make it much easier. Gotta do my grandson's Passat. If a clean up and new gasket don't fix it, then I'll go ahead and put new coils and plugs in it. .

If you're replacing this because your oil fill tube has completely broken off, be aware, you CAN simply install the oil cap directly to the valve cover. The filler neck was added to raise the fill cap up to the Jetta engine cover height, but on the Audi engines, this neck isn't glued on because there isn't a big cover.

VALVE COVER gasket and HEAD gasket. are 2 totally and very different things. If you try to torque the valve cover bolts to 40 nm you will twists the head off them.
Nice video! In the Uk, Vw wont sell only valve cover gasket, probably can get aftermarket one. When i replaced my injector loom on my 1.9 tdi, i overtighten one of the bolts to cover and it felt like it snapped and it just spins in place. Whats the best way to get it out. Thanks

I have a 2012 Eos with 55k on it. Water pump ended up leaking on it due to the valve cover leaking down on the water pump seal. Took the VW to the VW dealership, they replaced both the Water Pump and the Valve Cover (1,374.00 - Valve Cover Gasket, no charge for the Water Pump). A few weeks later the service engine light went on after my wife took a sharp turn. After checking the dipstick there was no oil on dipstick, added 3 qts of oil to the car took it back to the dealership only to find out that the oil was being distributed into the turbo. I'm wondering when the valve cover gasket was replaced if damage was done to the PCV Valve and cause oil to leak in the turbo? Any thoughts
They should only ever need to be calibrated if you have to put a circuit board in them. My Snap-On guy sold me mine by bringing the demo in, throwing it on the ground, and then putting it on the torque checker and showing me it was still 100% accurate. Sure enough I accidentally dropped mine a few months later and took it on the truck the next week, and still 100%.
thanks for the video, i did this today on my golf mk5 but when i removed the gasket it broke and some of it was glued in the middle section where the spark plugs are, when i took it off it was breaking into pieces and i think couple of very small pieces fell inside, would they cause any damage to engine?
It shouldn't. Gasket material generally isn't hard enough to cause issues, unless the engine ate alot of it at once. Little pieces, no big deal. I once had a helper leave a microfiber rag inside an intake manifold once.. I installed it, didn't check to make sure passageways were clear.. sucked that rag around 2 valves. Spent the day nipping & melting at pieces of rag, hours & hours. Replaced 2 bent pushrods. Engine had 6,200 miles on it. Was a Chevy 5.3
HumbleMechanic thanks. My valve cover has started to weep a bit of oil after a head replacement last year. At least that’s the highest point on the engine that shows oil leakage.
Thanks for the vid, I'll be tackling this later this week. I wasn't able to move the gasket off at all on my initial try. It might have been a combination of the engine being stone cold and being too afraid to loosen the bolts all the way. How far can the bolts be loosened before I worry about them falling off the cover and into the engine bay? Some other vids show quite a bit of struggling with the back two hoses (mine are on pretty tight unlike the ones on the vid)..

Did my valve cover and PCV gaskets a few weeks ago...but I stripped the bolt farthest to the rear right. Would taking the whole cover off again be the best way to drill that out? Next time, I am not converting Nm to lb-ft!
@@HumbleMechanic Thanks much! I'll be honest, I had tried to drill it out with the cover on the car. Have a feeling I may have damaged the surrounding aluminum. How could I go about repairing that?
How would you know if you need to replace the gasket? I have a lot of oil debris all around the area, and have been having problems with high rpm, low acceleration type issues. I have, changed the HPFP pressure regulator, AND the HPFP itself now, and still the same issue. I am getting: P0171 (too lean) P0087 (fuel rail, pressure too low), etc. could it be the gasket possibly or?
HumbleMechanic so could the cover be cracked then? I also noticed that a vacuum line, that’s right beside the hpfp, has a giant crack where it connects at the top. (It’s literally the one you say don’t even look at, in your “how to change follower/hpfp” video). Could this cause the issues I’m seeing and or the CELs that I’m seeing? Thank you so much for your reply sir. I’m a big fan of your channel.

It was making huge plumes of bluish white smoke, so I checked the PCV and found the diaphragm was shot. I replaced the PCV and it seems to be better, but now every now and then when I accelerate it billows black smoke and starts to misfire. I checked for codes and I'm getting a lean on bank one code. It's also still burning quite a bit of oil. I'd say it's burning a quart every 600 miles. Do you think the problem is with the PCV or maybe even the valve cover? Did my valve cover and PCV gaskets a few weeks ago...but I stripped the bolt farthest to the rear right. Would taking the whole cover off again be the best way to drill that out? Next time, I am not converting Nm to lb-ft!
yes. But dont start with drilling, see if you can chase the threads first. 10 NM is 7.4lb ft
@@HumbleMechanic Thanks much! I'll be honest, I had tried to drill it out with the cover on the car. Have a feeling I may have damaged the surrounding aluminum. How could I go about repairing that?
Probably a heli-coil at this point
I thankfully stopped before the threads inside the head itself. What do you recommend if I have to fill in anything around the bolt hole?
So when taking off the valve covering gasket are u messing with the timing ?
Not on this engine
My man 👨
Before putting the engine cover back on, be sure to plug that blue connector in too (9:00), Charles. ;-)
HAHA I actually never put that back on. It went where it belongs. In the damn trash HAAHHAHAHAHAHA
@HumbleMechanic
Just pulling your leg, of course.
HAHA I know. I also knew Id get crap for that.
That fuel pump did look gnarly dude lol
It got replaced too.
Hey Charles can you please please please do a DIY for an mk6 gti valve cover?
It’s on the list for sure.
I can't get over how much plastic are on German cars. Not to take anything away from your video, it was well documented and edited.
Oh yeah. There is TONS!! Most of it is actually fine. Some, not so much 😂
If you are just replacing the valve cover gasket, is it necessary to replace the bolts?
Not on this one. Reuse away
HumbleMechanic cool, thanks for the reply. That’s saves quite a bit of dough. I saw those boots going for $6 a piece.
Ouch!!! Hahah
Doubt it is the gasket causing the drivability issues. That usually only causes oil leaks
I snapped a screw head where the pcv valve attaches to engine (bottom left of the pvc) any suggestion to take it out?
Yikes. Can you get vice grips on it?
@@HumbleMechanic I can't get hold of it... I was thinking to drill the plastic around the metal and pull it out... Than use plastic filler... I dnt know if that's best way to go.. But I'm running out of option 😔
Ok so my car dash PRNDL lights up. If I replace this you think it’ll fix that problem ?
Also I drive a Vw rabbit 2009
Doubt it. That’s a transmission issue. Gotta check faults
Just replaced mine but its leaking by tandem pump. Do i need to seal with sealant those corners by camshaft?
I usually don’t
Nice , you should do one from the pan oil , because I have Audi TT FSI wanna do it but still waiting for Video 😪
Why don't you do the cambelt and timing chain replacement??
Will removing valve cover allow you to inspect timing belt???...
You can peel back the upper cover
@@HumbleMechanic ok thanks... dude you replied super quick awesome I'm going to subscribe
🙏🙏🙏
Hey, I have a 2008 A4 with the 2.0t fsi that I'm having issues with and was wondering if you might be able to shine some light on my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Curious did you sort this out? Sounds awfully similar to what I'm experiencing
@@fishkur I did not. That car drove me to drinking. So, I got rid of it. Good luck, man! I hope you get yours sorted out.
How do Tech's know torque specs on certain things? Is there a book?
Yep repair manual is my go to.
