This is sickening. I can’t help feeling helpless in Midrand on agricultural holdings if this kind of thing is happening in Stellenbosch. I don’t think the general rates payer participates in most public participation processes when it comes to new developments. It’s published in the government gazette - who really follows that religiously? And town planners have so many sneaky ways of excluding interested and affected parties with backward municipal processes like using postal services to inform immediate neighbours while every single South African knows postal services is no longer a functional service. When will municipal bylaws, processes and procedures catch up with 2024 (and earlier) realities of a serious breakdown in basic services far beyond their locus of control? In the meantime developments like these are happening and local residents are suffering. Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for development and progress. But it’s got to be a fair process.
Those hill was a pine plantation. All existing developments everywhere once used to be nature. Even the area where you are living right now. What is important is that the municipality does not trade the access to the public open space away to the developers. Not one square millimetre. Could you go and have a look at Cloetesville? No social development. Hundreds of private developments around it. Children are staying in hokkies on their parent's properties. Drugs, gangs, and unemployment were at their peak while the Stellenbosch Municipality is one of the wealthiest Municipalities in our country. The town itself is busy losing its character due to developments. This Municipality needs to be investigated.

I used to run and ride bike through that area. Several trails now suddenly stop and have steep drops. It seriously disrupted the environment and enjoyment of by ordinary people. It is ridiculous.
So we have water supply problems to rural area of Calitzdorp where there is a municipal borehole with water just running away because it naturally overflows, its been overflowing for 4 years, but Carte Blanche talks about flowers on privately owned property!

This is pretty typical for a DA municipality - arrogant, unaccountable, chase rates at all costs. We lived below Botmaskop for 35 years. The municipality allowed that "natural area" to become overrun with alien vegetation, worsening by the year. A cynic would argue that when you allow land to degrade then environmental objections to "development" have no leg to stand on. What was public land is now to be privatised.
A lot of Idas Valley residents had became prominent figures, and moved out. Not many residents in the Western Cape has such a beautiful municipal dam and forest area in their backyard. Create an homeowners group that fight litter and graffiti in that beautiful area, Pressure the municipality to maintain that area for the benefit of the existing residents.
Land is auctioned for development consistent with the existing or higher value in some suburbs and for social housing in others with no regard for existing owners and impact on property values.
Same thing is happening in Hoedspruit. Property prices has gone up so high that even the middle class can't afford to live here. Mostly overseas buyers. And the water problem is a huge story for Carte Balance...new developments keeps on being approved, but there is no infrastructure to support this. The town ends up without water regularly.
This development is disastrous to the environment The implications are that we have to fight for the right to live within a valuable and beautiful area. All the existing suburbs in Stellenbosch, as in other towns and cities across the world, were once natural habitats for wild animal and plant life. Botmaskop is no exception. Helshoogte, like the rest of Stellenbosch, is a crime-ridden area so it makes sense to develop it as a high security estate. Hopefully many local artisans have found gainful employment by the ultra-rich developers. However, this certainly does not promote long-term inclusive economic growth. On the contrary, it will, like all the dozens of other urban and suburban developments across the planet in both democratic and autocratic countries, increase the gap between rich and poor. Nobody really cares, least of all politicians, be they democratic or autocratic. Ideologies are smokescreens. Money talks. Tragic but true.

If you live in even a half-decent area (nevermind this development) they'll re-evaluate your property value for you (regardless of whether you're thinking about selling), and charge you increased rates based on their assessment. Talk about conflicts of interest.

Millions of people are coming to Cape Town as the rest of Southern Africa fails. I would rather have rich people moving here than the poor robbers and fraudsters. As it is thousands of children can’t be placed in school for next year as we don’t have the schools to fill them. The rich will help build the schools we need.
To a certain extent I understand that this is not what people may want or like. The developer made mention of the huge area of alien trees. With the amount of veld fires that the Western Cape has every year, I see it as better where you have an estate that contribute to the local rates and taxes, rather than a piece of veld that needs millions to be spent on it during fire season.

As it is thousands of children can’t be placed in school for next year as we don’t have the schools to fill them. The rich will help build the schools we need.
To a certain extent I understand that this is not what people may want or like. The developer made mention of the huge area of alien trees. With the amount of veld fires that the Western Cape has every year, I see it as better where you have an estate that contribute to the local rates and taxes, rather than a piece of veld that needs millions to be spent on it during fire season.
