Yard dice with inlaid wood

- For Christmas 2017's batch of homemade gifts, we set out to make "Yardzee" sets of big yard dice for our extended family. Rather than settle for dice with painted-on or burned-in dots, I wanted to try inlaid wood for the dots. It was a lot of work, but I really like the result. This was also an interesting exercise in making things in large batches.
The white dice were made from a 4x4 post of untreated pine with walnut dots cut from a dowel. The "red" dice came from some old posts I had replaced on my kids' backyard playground. The bottom ends of the posts had rotted away, but I saved the rest and reclaimed it for this project. My best guess is that they're redwood. The white dots came from birch dowels.

The offset block for drilling and the catch tray for the dowels are genius!
+Make Build Modify Thanks, working out the jigs was the fun part :-)
Agreed, simple and accurate
That’s a lot of detail work, but they turned it great. Several great tips in the video that I’ll be recycling. Great job Ben.
+ManCraftingTM Thanks Chad
That was genius with the 1 inch spacers.
They worked great, just have to make sure you're perfectly centered to start with
A fantastic example of setting up fixtures for doing a bulk job.
Thanks, working out the fixtures was the fun part
Best video for making these blocks and keeping the dots consistent on all pieces. Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely love it
Best looking yard dice i have seen. Nice work
These are beautiful!!!
What a great gift idea!!
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Elegant solutions, clever craftsmanship, and wonderful camerawork!
Thank you, you're very kind
Even the soundtrack was cool.
Thank you! I have been marking each die for drilling, that use of 1" spacers is very cool.
Awesome job
Great job. Fantastic batch process.
I think this is my favorite UA-cam video of all time.
wow that is amazing - I also like the 1" spacers
I struggled last night to figure out the best way to make some dice. Thanks for the info!
Great method for lining up the holes on the drill press without having to measure every single piece
Ingenious hole jig - thanks!
I had an engineer friend make me a metal template to make all the holes for my 17 die, but your jig would have saved me a lot of time & hassle.
Kick ass work! I’m gonna “gamble” on some of your jig ideas soon!
Really smart work, Ben! And, now you're ready for summer.
Thanks Charlie! For now they work well on carpet :-)
It’s been a while but no one congratulated you on that perfect music timing. Awesome job!
Nice looking dice. thanks for sharing.
great work Ben I saw some great tips and learned a few things from this video kudos my friend keep up the great vids
Thanks Patrick!
Awesome video
turned out great! well done!
Thank you!
Ingenious!
Awesome sir!! never seen these done with inlaid dots before, good job!!
Thanks!
Nice. Liked the simple alignment jig and dowel cutting jig.
Thank you
Fantastic! The spaces are the hole alignment makes me think this is a doable project. I couldn’t imagine using templates or punching to drill each one after seeing this.
Yep, trying to line up all those holes would annoying really fast, totally worth spending time to work out easy to use jigs.
Great video. Wish I saw it last week as I spent a couple hours perfecting a template.
Came out great! Good job! 🤓👍
Thanks!
Cool.
Very cool.
Good job
This is awesome.
Thank you
looking good!
Thanks!
i like the spacer idea. cool vid
Thank you
Super job! I especially liked the catch for the dowel cuts. It's a simple thing to set up, but I certainly wouldn't have thought of it. I'd be chasing discs all over. ^_^
Thanks, I had to chase a few discs but the tray was a big help :-)
Nice video. I have been making a DIY game video each day to pass time in lockdown. I will add this to my list. Subscribed.
WOW....excellent!!!
Thank you
I'm digging them Ben!
👍
That is some primo grade-A jigging to get those all aligned properly. They look great!
Thanks!
Ok that circle cutting setup was pretty dope
Thank you
Wow, that WAS AMAZING HOW YOU MAKE THEM. I need to try and see if I can make that. Thanks!!!

Merci beaucoup :-)
great video, i just got into woodworking i have made 2 crates, 1 was from Steve Ramsey the other was one i did free style, a bench top for my push sticks push blocks and frame strap i only made 2 die so far, that's all i had laying around plus it was pressure treated, i ha dan idea for the numbers, on a leftover piece i was thinking caulk or even flex seal, i am trying the caulk then the more i thought about it i an thinking the caulk will get dirty.great video. i am thinking about a wood template out of plywood then just set on die then drill, i don't have a drill press yet.
What wood did u use to make these Great idea!!!!
Looking to make these but a shorter process
What diameter are the dowels?
What finishing spray/paint do you use?
What size are the dowels?
Verry cool!!! Hey would love to see u DustDupity set up!! I got one and planing to make a cart or something for mine soon
Check my other videos, I did a video on my cyclone a few months back
Awesome video.. what size router bit you use?
Thanks, I think it was a 1/4" radius roundover bit
Could we use sawdust and CA glue for the inlays?
Just found this awesome video. How deep did you drill the holes and did you push the dowels all the way in? I'd be worried about the glue pouring out! I need to buy a few tools for this. Thanks!
I drilled the holes about 1/2 inch deep, and pushed the dowels all the way in. As long as it's a relatively snug fit, you shouldn't have to worry about glue or anything falling out
Thanks! I’m going to give this a try. I just need to add to my tool library so it will have to wait until this pandemic lightens up!
What did you spray the dice with before adding the poly?
I think it was spray lacquer. It seemed to soak up lots of finish so I was trying a couple different things.
What size are the holes and dowels?
5/8" if I remember correctly
And now.. we all know how mass production works. *cool*
Festool? Why so _fancy,_ sir? Undeniably awesome result though :D
Yes, fancy and high quality, though I'm too cheap to spend that much. This one was gifted to me and I am very thankful :-)
How about a set of dice for backyard D&D?
Maybe someday, anything besides a 6-sided die gets tricky :-)
Ben what you made and how you made them was Fantastic, I suppose the question is why did you make so many??? 😱😱😱. Cheers Sean
Thanks, I made several sets as Christmas gifts
