    I purchased the mortiser pieces to modify my drill press at a yard sale way back, and this video helped me understand how to set up finally. Thank you!

    Hi Paul
    I had to put a support leg under the table as drill presses sold today have rubbish castings. Works but

    Very informative video thanks. Never thought of my Bosch Drill Press as “adorable”, but come to think of it, it works for me too😉

      I think if you're able to juggle with any "machine", it classifies as adorable ;)

    Hi, I am in the happy state of having both a floor standing drill and a mortise, as you said the stand alone mortise with a cross slide vice means that I can use the chisel much easier and because I am not changing the bit all the time it is set up perfectly. The only caveat I would put on the down list is that although I have more sizes I do not tend to change the chisel because I would then have to set it all up again

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  4 роки тому

      It's interesting to hear you use a single size on a proper mortiser, but it makes sense, the whole thing looks fiddly. I guess there are trade offs with size of the chisel and speed you can cut through anyway, so may be faster doing overlapping widths.
      What size to you use?

    I’ve wrestled with buying one of these but have held off because I own a domino that can do most morticing tasks a lot quicker.

    Well it would be nice but it won't put me off the Adorable Bosch Mini-press not being able to mortise in this fashion ;)

    Well crap, I’ve been thinking about buying one of these kits for quite some time now, but after watching your demo, it kinda seems like they’re garbage. I mean I guess it gets the job done, but if you have to drill as slow as you did, then loosen the clamp, blow the chips away so you can see what you’re doing each time, then tighten the clamps again, it would take you all freak’n day to drill several mortises. No wonder many woodworkers who do a lot of mortises buy a dedicated machine. Absent a dedicated machine, It seems like it might be faster just to drill out the mortise area, then square it up with a chisel. I have a problem buying new tools I don’t need and never use, so maybe I’ll buy this at some point and try it out anyway. Nice review!

    How big / powerful press do you need in order to use a HCM in softwood / hardwood?

    Thanks. Of all the reviews of this type of mortising attachment this is the least negative I have seen, yet this style has been around for donkeys, why has no one been able to sort out the problems? Also, is there a minimum hp for the drill press to drive the attachment?

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  4 роки тому

      I wouldn't call this a review - I only spent about an hour with it, and at least 45minutes of that was trying to fit it to a drill press with a toolless chuck! 😂
      The horsepower doesn't really matter - I mean, it does but it also doesn't because the limitation is always going to be the leverage you have (or don't have!) on the chisel. The auger bits (particularly in the 19mm and smaller sizes) could be driven with 1/3 HP no problem, but not being able to push the chisel through the timber stops it dead in the tracks. That'd be the number one reason they're not more popular.
      The biggest hurdle these kits face is how much do you spend converting it to a mortiser (jig + lever + crossslide vice) when other methods exist, including bench top mortisers.

    @ 4:35. Of course you don't take out the short handle you have and put in a longer one. Bit to clever for that.

      You're welcome to modify your own drill press, but I'm a little reluctant to walk into a retailer and modify their floor stock for the purposes of a video.

    Inconvenient in almost all aspects. Got a dedicated HF Mortiser for about $100 which is not great but still easier than this for unclamping and moving the pieces. Plus it can be given much longer fencing etc for great more accurate repeatability. My floor drill press would take a BUNCH of mods that would never work for this because of total inconvenience for wood longer than about 18 inches...No clamping, shaky table, less up and down strength with many turns to get to depth, and wobbly stand, and ... Yeah - not an option. Sorry.

    • @TheWoodKnight
      @TheWoodKnight  4 роки тому

      Haha, keep in mind this series of videos isn't a review of any tool or to persuade people to switch to X-Y-Z method of making mortise and tenon, but showing off all the ways of making M&T with power tools that I can think of. I'm trying to be objective and not poopooing methods that people might prefer (like the plunge-rounter-to-make-tenons)!
