VTR, This was a very nice video. As I mentioned before, I’m trying to learn how to drive in the conditions that you guys do there in Vietnam. No problem. You're welcome. It's not as bad as it looks it's mostly just different. You just need to get into the flow of the driving style here. The first few times I went out I was nervous but now I am totally relaxed.
You ever go up into the old caves where the Japanese had their gun emplacements along the Vung Tau coast? When I was there in 1968, the guns were still in the caves on railroad tracks. Teagards...
No. I haven't seen them. But now I'm curious so I'll look into it and see if they are accessible. There was one abandoned big gun up on the hill by the Jesus statue. A little irony there.
Barry, nice videos. Have now watched all 17 and anxiously await new ones. I have enjoyed retiring to Vung Tau vicariously through you. I enjoy seeing you accomplish day-to-day things, like getting air in the tires of your scooter. One question though: do you ever eat out on the local economy. I know you picked up some KFC but I mean like street food, small quaint Vietnamese restaurants for Pho or Banh Mi sandwiches? Again thanks for the videos.
First of all I want thank you for having the intestinal fortitude to sit through all 17 vids. When I get positive feedback to my humble efforts it does make me want to continue on. Sometimes I think I'm my own worst critic. To answer your question. Sure I eat locally at the small shops and sidewalk vendors. Vung Tau isn't like some Asian cities that will have most of the street vendors grouped in one big area. So you have to keep an eye out when you're out and about but it is difficult sometimes because I can't read their signs so I'm not sure what they're selling. Helps to have a local with you to learn the good places.
Thanks Barry for the videos, I've seen all 17, some more than once. I plan on moving to Vung Tau this winter. You mentioned in a previous video about doing a video about the "night life bar scene", are you still planning to do that? Best regards, Dale
Thanks Dale. Glad you enjoyed them. Cool that you're coming here. Contact Lynn Tran @ vungtauhousing.com when you're ready to check out apartments and/or houses. Also if you need visa help talk to Ha Milan on facebook. Both very nice girls and speak good English. Tell them I sent you.
I plan to visit some time in April, get an apartment and live at least 6 months a year there. Ive been to VN 7 times over the last 15 years and really love it. Ill have a beer with you when I arrive!
Sounds good. Make sure you contact Lynn Tran at vung tau rental on facebook or vungtauhousing .com. She can get you lined up to look at apartments when you get here. Tell her I sent you.
You know it's not just where you live. It's all about embracing the expat lifestyle in Asia. Those of us that stay love it. But some guys just never feel happy and end up going home. If you've been here 7 times you are way ahead of me when I moved here. I had never been to Vung Tau and I hadn't been to VN since 69. But I have lived in Asia for years and so it wasn't a big adjustment and I got lucky because I do love it here. See you in April.
I think I will be ok, I actually love the place however I have never been to Vung Tau. I would like to have a few western friends to go out and eat and have a beer. I want to take the train from VT to Hanoi and stop along the way at places like Hoi An and Danang and we can take Vun Tau rider on the trip of the country!!!
I didn't see any videos about healthcare or finding medical care or emergency rooms. Do some videos about that. Also, can the US embassy help in emergencies?
I've talked about healthcare many times in the comments. Basically you have two choices. Pay as you go or get expat health insurance. Good care is available if you have the money. I guess it would depend on the emergency. I've lived in Asia for many years and never been in an embassy so I'm not sure what they offer.
My Husband and I miss Your Comments, hope ur doing Well,I was born in Mexico my husband E Los Angeles California.Visited Vung Tao January 2019 Because of Your Videos ,planning to go back again before we go Home.
Hi VT Rider. Enjoy your vids and the Retirement info. Australia is getting too expensive for retireees like me. What do you think about Hoi An as a retirement destination?
Thanks. I can't give you first hand knowledge on Hoi An. I've never been there. My best advice is do all the research you can online. Pick out the 2 or 3 places that best fit your needs and come over and spend a week in each place. Get a feel for the vibe of the city and then you can make a decision.
Looking forward to your next video. My wife and I returned to Vietnam two months early this year, HCMC is getting a lot of rain but I have missed it when ridding around. Have you been getting wet?
Of course. Haha. It is the rainy season. I have neve bought rain gear so I do get wet when I get caught out riding. But it is usually a warm rain so no big deal. Pull into a coffee shop and wait it out. Usually but not always stops within an hour.
Hope you're doing well, VT. I'm still looking forward to some new vids ( I check your channel every few days just in case I might miss something LOL). Take care, my friend. We'll see you when you get back at it👍
@@vungtaurider2864 is the food expensive in Vung Tau? I haven't been there, but most meals are like $1 where I stay. But if I do cook it's just rice, eggs, vegetables since I buy the meat, fish, shrimps at quán cơm tấm. For around 30k dong you can ask them to give you portions of fried pork chop, fried lemon grass chicken, meatballs etc. to eat with my rice at home.
Hi Barry, Thanks for sharing your trip to the beach. Your videos allow us to get a good feel for what it's like to live there. I guess it's difficult to develop relationships there without knowing Vietnamese language. Do you ever have concern of women falsely reporting you to police. I was just wondering if that sort of thing happens there.
Hey you're welcome. Many of the locals speak decent English so it is fairly easy to develop relationships. That being said if I could speak it would open a lot more doors.
I don't know if such a device exists for a helmet mounted camera. And I know there is nothing for a baseball hat mounted cam. I need a stabilizer for my head...haha
Can you get a specific retirement visa, or can you just keep renewing the 3 month visa’s on an ongoing basis ? Do they have any type of bar scene ? And is the wifi/mobile service okay?
That's a tough call Steve. Each place has pros and cons. Da Nang has better beaches but is popular with Russian gangster types and Chinese investors. So it is more expensive than Vung Tau. I think Vung Tau is more laid back and we have no crime to speak of. Mainly because this is the hub of the Vietnam offshore oil business and the government wants no foreign workers being hassled so the bad boys stay away. If it's in your time frame and budget I would go and spend a few days in each place and see which one you feel most at home in.
Have you left Vung Tau or even Vietnam? Well, I'm moving to Vietnam next month, Sept. 27th, 2019 and I was wondering if you could recommend a place/hotel/guest house in Vung Tau as after 6 days in Saigon I'm heading to VT for a month to get my feet wet and learn the ropes a bit before exploring VN. So, any help would be very appreciated. Thanks, I'd owe you dinner and coffee, at least. I would like to talk to you about expats, Vietnam, and life as a retiree over coffee or a beer.
Great video, nice day for you and us watchers. seems that families, especially girls wear the same outfits kind of like team colours if you see my meaning. How long is the beach and what are the good times of the year for this type of weather? I hear that lots of Vietnamese cannot swim and so just stay on the breakwater on these beaches maybe miss informed. Whats the heat on your walk.
Yeah, they like to wear the matching outfits. They like uniforms in Asia so this is just another way of showing they're part of a group. To be honest there isn't really a bad time of year here. It is the rainy season right now so we get the almost daily storm usually for an hour or less. But I like this time of year because it is cooler. Temps range from low to high 80's in the day and mid to high 70's at night. But I'd say 90% of the time it is 78 at night to 84 in the day. The beach is pretty long. I'd guess a mile or more.
I wanted to ask the same thing...I was hoping your still in vung tau. i wanted to visit and have a beer and question and answer...But i understand...Vietnam is not an easy place to live long term.
Yeah... where'd you go? Funny. I saw your videos and out of the blue and much to my surprise, by coincidence I wound up visiting Vung Tau and I think stayed in the same rentals as you. My host said yeah there's a guy here that films for youtube. I thought, my god what a small world. I originally went Davao PH and wound up in Vung Tau. I really enjoyed myself there and rode a rented moped right along the coast. Anyhow, hope you're doing well. And hope you're not back stuck in California.
Hello Barry, I've had enough of the Chinese invasion here in Cambodia, and I'm heading to Vietnam within the next few weeks to continue life in SEA. Is Vung Tau still a pleasant, comfortable place to live or is it undergoing drastic changes as well. I've heard many good things about it in the past an I like the proximity to HCM. You must have been there a few years by now so I respect your honest opinion. Thanks in advance, I might see you in town sometime in the near future. Cheers, Sean.
Hi Sean. Vung Tau has a rep for not having the nicest beaches consequently we have managed to avoid the Chinese and Russian invasions. The beaches are fine just not pristine white like some other areas. This place is great 95% of the time. It only gets crazy when the Saigon folks come here on the holidays. As you can see in most of my videos it is pretty mellow traffic wise. There is construction going on but that is pretty much true in most Asian cities these days. I like it to a certain extent because the more apartments on the market keeps the rents down. I have a friend who moved here from Cambodia and he likes it better.
Hi Berry i just came back from a little island hopping; the actual Cambodian coastline is gone for good, which includes the pristine beaches and jungle areas of Ream National Park, that too is right now turning into yet another China Town. VT sounds ideal, and although it isn't the best beach town, that, as you mentioned, might just keep it livable in the foreseeable future and there are really good beaches and small communities close by for day trips I understand. Having HCMC a bit more than an hour away by boat is a huge plus as well at least for me. A more serious question would be about the night life there..:).are you going to do a video about that in the near future. Any good looking ladies left or are they all on the payroll of the off-shore oil guys? Anyway, thanks for the update. Ciao
We have so many bars here that I can't even hazard a guess as to the number. There are plenty of good looking ladies. I mean it's not like Saigon or Bangkok but good enough. The offshore guys don't dominate the nightlife. Many of them have steady gf's or wives. I did some bar hopping in a couple of my vids.
Awesome, a somewhat laid back town right on the ocean with great food and a little nightlife, sounds fantastic. It actually sounds very similar to what the coastal town of Sihanoukville here in Cambodia used to be like, but those days are long gone. There's also the cultural side of things which is a big plus in Vietnam, and something Cambodia sadly is lacking in every which way; that and the much better infrastructure and cleaner park/walking areas is a big plus at least for me. Unfortunately I have to give up a killer apartment here, and I can't bring my motorbike into Vietnam permanently, but it is what it is, change is good and the horizons are wide open. I should be touching down in VT sometime in June, then settle into something temporary and start scouting for a longer term apartment; according to the web there are plenty available right on the ocean even. I'm also looking forward to touring the coastline right after the rainy season. Cheers, dinner's on me (incl. the wine) :):):)
My friend Lynn Tran has vungtauhousing.com or vung tau rentals on FB. Check out her apartments. She is awesome at helping you out after you move in and she speaks good English. Tell her I sent you.
Yeah it can get a little boring sometimes. But SG is the opposite. Too much going on. If I was younger I'd probably live in SG but at my age I like it quiet.
Hi Barry!...Have just watched a few of your videos. I like the way you present them in a casual way showing the sights etc. I live in Australia and like America it has changed so much with regards to laws , regulation and general way of life . I love the look of Vietnam in general and especially the cost of living so thanks for the insight. Hope to meet you one day. Take care . Jason
Yes. No winter really. Pretty much the same all year. We have a rainy season which I like and a little bit of summer that gets a little warmer but that's about it.
Hey Barry, When will we get a new video. Love your channel. I am in the process of making a decision between Vietnam & Thailand & I feel like your channel gives me more on the real Vietnam. @@vungtaurider2864 Do you know anything about Cambodia. From the photos and videos I've seen, which is not much, that place has always intrigued me. Ever been?
Barry, you used to do an intro to your videos from your apartment, talking about what we would see in the video. That was a nice way to start them. Also, I remember in one of your previous videos you went to the bank but you've never talked much about day to day things like how easy or difficult it is to open a bank account there, how you can get access to money from the States like your retirement pay, social security, bank account, etc. Those are topics that would be very helpful for anyone considering relocating to Viet Nam. Maybe a topic for a future video...Keep up the good work. You got the camera angle from your hat right on this video. Thanks!
I'll second that request, I have been considering living there soon and would like to hear about those things and also any info you might have on immigration, thank you for your videos, I enjoy them.

@@vungtaurider2864 that's great! What a wonderful place to call home. So much sun and seafood. My wife is buying property there, hopefully I'll be calling Vung Tau my home next year. Looking forward to more vids, my friend. Cheers
Still looking at Feb to visit the country and spend 3 months, painting and looking at the history. How do you get around the 3-month visa issue and the scooter driving documents issue as I am trying to stay a bit longer and go to Cambodia and use a scooter when in situ? Still planning but getting close to buying tickets and find accommodation. So have been looking at your friends site for rough ideas.
Stewart I have a another friend who can fix you up with a longer visa. Her name is Ha Milan. Look for her on facebook. She speaks good English and she is very pretty... and married...haha. Tell her I sent you. The majority of the people I know do not have VN driver's licenses. That's foreigners and locals. You ARE supposed to have one so it is up to you. There are people here that will get you through the process. If you're talking with Lynn she might be able to help you with renting a scooter too. I know she has a couple but don't know if they're rented.
You can go to your local AAA office in the States and get an International Drivers License (IDL). The cost is less than $20 for the license but you will need to bring 2 passport style photos that you can get taken at pretty much any drug store or they can take them for you there at the AAA office for an additional fee. AAA will paste one photo in your IDL and they keep one for their records. They will transfer whatever endorsements you have on your U.S. license to your IDL, such as motorcycle endorsement. I have been stopped by the police before in Vietnam while riding a rented scooter and they were satisfied with my IDL and a copy of the rental agreement for the bike. One time I got stopped and didn't have the rental agreement and I had to pay a small fine/bribe on the spot of the equivalent of a few dollars.
I've been stopped a couple of times over the years; once on my first trip to VN in 1996 in downtown Ho Chi Minh City for riding in the lanes that are reserved for cars only (I didn't know) and once a year or two later in HCMC for riding at night without my headlight on. The motorbike I was riding had a switch to turn the headlight on and off and I forgot to turn it on. I was used to my motorcycle back home in Virginia where the headlight comes on automatically whenever the ignition is turned on. Both times they let me go with a warning. The time I had to pay the fine for not having the rental agreement with me for the motorbike I was riding is a different story that's a little long so I'll leave it out unless you want to hear it.
The IDL is not valid in Vietnam you have to get a Vietnamese license and can only get one of those if you are living there or there for over 6 months if you are lucky. My Fex Pilot mate went the office in Saigon and it it was closed all the time. So your friend who gets extended visas can she get a license for us as well if you get my drift?
I always enjoyed your videos. Stuff I found helpful. Stuff I thought I needed to know before visiting Viet Nam. Would be nice to hear how things went and turned out for you... At least reply with "still here " so we know you're still breathing. -See ya!
Is there a way for you to check an individual in Vung Tau, been trying unsuccessfully for years? Her name is Tran Thi Hue and last address in July 1974 was 62 Duong Trieu Au Vung Tau
Well I am falling behind on making vids. The apartment one is difficult because it involves many people as far as getting access because they are all privately owned. So I'm just waiting until my friend has a client who wants to see several apartments and then I'll shoot the vid as I'm showing the property.
Getting closer every month mate, will be there in late Jan early Feb and will travel a bit but as my friend will split half way through for 2-3 weeks I will settle in a nice area for that duration, maybe in Vang Tung to do some painting and art work. So will keep yuo info-ed and maybe meet for a beer once wehave a final plan. Maybe you could join us on the Cambodia phase, get your old bones out for a week? We can cover expenses if you do, never know we may hate each other.lol.
Welcome to Vung Tau. I work with Lynn Tran at vung tau housing. She has me take clients to check out apartments. Go to her website vungtauhousing.com and contact her. Let her know your needs. Budget and your absolute must haves so she can see what is available to suit you. She will send you photos and info and when you're ready set up appointments to see the apartments. That's when I'll show up to show the units. If you go to vung tau rentals on facebook and click on shop you can see a lot of pictures of apartments. This is more up to date than the website because we are working on it at this time. You can also message her from facebook. Up to you. Tell her you have been talking with me.
I can say its hard to get things done in the Phils. Man it took me 2 years to get my residencey. Then to start a bank account you have to have a ACR basiclly a police check. What does that have to do with banking
Nothing. There are weird things here too banking wise. You are limited to like $500 to send out of the country. Not that that is a big deal to me but locals who have family out of the country can't send them big bucks.
Pay then go ticket cost? How many bottles? 100 k/ bottle , they should not stop u as foreigner. Only check registration card OK .not hot bike good respect for guesses

Checked out her site, Ill contact her when I arrive. Hope I adjust to life there however I have visited VN 7 times so everything should be cool.
Sounds like fun.
Are sharks ever spotted? And are there ever reported shark attacks? Just wondering, I’m not to paranoid.

I am also a veteran and have been teaching in China for about 17 years. I love it here but also love Vietnam.
How's the mood in China towards Americans these days? I always wanted to visit China. I only made it to Hong Kong back in the R&R days.
For the most part, I have been treated very well! My university students are very respectful and eager to learn about the USA.
Where are you your audience misses you more videos amigo
We'll see you when you get back at it👍
Thanks David. Soon. I promise.
Please keep making more videos. Food reviews would be cool. Thank you!
Soon. I do 95% of my own cooking so I don't think you would want me to review that... haha. If I do go out to somewhere cool I will do a review.
That being said if I could speak it would open a lot more doors.
what happened to this guy? is he still making videos?
Hi, Did you get a gimbal or stablizer for your camera yet? Thanks for the video.
I don't know if such a device exists for a helmet mounted camera. And I know there is nothing for a baseball hat mounted cam. I need a stabilizer for my head...haha
Where are you???
Where have you been barry? miss your videos. been there miss it.
I just took a break. Back soon. And thanks.
Thanks been there a couple times and miss it i live not far from woodland ca.
Barry, did you move out of Vietnam?
No. I'm still here. I just took a break from making vids. Be back soon though.
Hi VTR, your video seems a little cloudy. Usually it is very clear. Good info on Vung Tau. Happy days!
Big technical problem. A finger smudge on the lens...haha. Thanks for watching.
Can you get a specific retirement visa, or can you just keep renewing the 3 month visa’s on an ongoing basis ? Do they have any type of bar scene ? And is the wifi/mobile service okay?
They have more bars here than I can count. There is wifi most everywhere you go and the mobile is as good as you have at home.
Hi Barry I got to HCMC the other day and I am thinking of visiting Vung Tau or Danaga which city would be better in live in
That's a tough call Steve. If it's in your time frame and budget I would go and spend a few days in each place and see which one you feel most at home in.
great video is there grab around there ?
Thanks. Yes there is.
Love your vids! How much monthly in US $ does it cost to live a nice lifestyle
in your area?
I spend about $1000 per month for bills and essentials. Add to that entertainment and unknowns. I usually spend about $1400.
How was Davao

Hello VT rider you haven’t posted for over a year. Are you still there?
VT is much cleaner and less traffic in SG - it is liveable, if a bit boring?
Yeah it can get a little boring sometimes. But SG is the opposite. Too much going on. If I was younger I'd probably live in SG but at my age I like it quiet.
Hey Barry, are you thinking of reopening your channel?
A nice video, but pic seems a little cloudy. Interesting about Vungers. Happy days!
Finger smudge on the lens when I was transferring the cam from helmet to hat.
Hi Barry!...Have just watched a few of your videos. I like the way you present them in a casual way showing the sights etc. I live in Australia and like America it has changed so much with regards to laws , regulation and general way of life . Thanks!
I'll do an intro on the next vid and update everyone. I'll cover all those topics you mentioned. Thanks for watching.
Looking forward to your next video. Thanks Barry.

Good info on getting an IDL. So far I've never been stopped.
-See ya!
