Can’t wait to see a redo of this test next year. Refreshed 2019 Lincoln MKC, redesigned 2019 Acura RDX, refreshed 2019 Mercedes GLC (with that new large infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster), 2019 BMW X3 finally with standard pre-collision equipment, new 2019 Cadillac XT4 (which really seems to fit in more with this group), and a refreshed 2019 Porsche Macan. Frankly, there will be no bad choice in the class very soon.
Yeah the previous QX50 was definitely faster and probably more engaging. Espcially considering the previous gen had a VQ37 325hp V6, RWD/AWD, and a 7 Speed auto. The new one is FWD, 2.0T 270hp, and a CVT.
RCBR because firstly, he was referring to an older model, and secondly let's not talk about reliability issues with BMW, Audi and Cadillac in the group, thirdly he was wrong to begin with, the older xc60 was one of the most reliable Volvos at that time and their most selling model.
No RDX and no Macan lower trim? They both start below $53,000. And the 2018 Audi Q5 for $53,000 u get the warm weather package with amazing sport seats with ventilation. They feel almost sport Italian car design. Fit like a glove.
DIAMLER: which vehicle is best is a very subjective matter. Example Consumer Reports and JDPower rank Volvo's infotainment as it's biggest flow. Freezes, etc. Motorweek praises it and gives it 1st place. BMW to me has the top driving experience but everyone I owned had reliability issues. My Q5 feels like a glove. Others hate it.
I have to agree with most of this, I went to the auto show expecting to love the Q5 the most, but - it came in second. The XC60 is stunning, inside and out. Truly beautiful and luxurious. As far as which one drives the best, it could be a whole different story, but damn the XC60 is nice. The RDX will be a big hit - It'll probably deliver most of the goodness of the Q5 at a better price and with the quality and low maintenance everyone expects from a Honda product.
I don't know man. I question the reliability of that complicated VC engine. But then again, I felt the same about their steer-by-wire system and I have not heard of any complaints about the system failing.
I don't agree with their rankings. Recently cross shopped the Mercedes GLC300, BMW X3, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Volvo XC60 (all 2018 models) and found the BMW to have the best blend of comfort, performance, user friendly infotainment, space and surprisingly value. Found the infotainment screen in the XC60 to freeze during the test drive, the engine to be unrefined and lacking in performance, the ride to be too stiff and the price (on lease) way too high.
Right in the target of Buick Envision 2.0T with Active Twin Clutch AWD. Starts at $45K but discounted to $32-35K and includes heated leather seats, heated steering wheel, cooled front seats, hands free lift gate, tri-zone climate control...
Tested all these recently, and Alfa was my clear winner. I wanted to like the Volvo for its safety features, but just didn't have any feel. BMW felt like I had to pay a lot to get basic stuff. Mercedes was a close second for me.
I found this review to be completely bogus since it limited the vehicles to a random price point. It's true that the BMW X3 does not have a lot of standard features, but when you add options that most people would want, it fares very well. Base pricing is meaningless on these vehicles. I ordered an X3 for less than an Audi Q5 Prestige and it has superior tech and handling. See Consumer Reports and Alex on Autos for more meaningful reviews and comparisons.
Why so many car markers going for a 2.0T engine setup? Every car tested except for Cadillac had a 2.0T. At this price point I would want a V6 not a 4 cylinder!
Cadillac's interiors and GM interior's in general are so sub-par compared to the rest of the industry. Go sit in an xc60 or xc90 and then compare it to any Cadillac. My old boss was in the market for a new SUV and he said the interior of the xc90 (which he bought) made you think it was a 100k+ SUV. This may not be a huge deal for people that are brand loyal, but man if you're open minded about it there's no comparison in perceived quality. Don't get me wrong I love me a good 'ol American Luxury car (CTS-V anyone?) but the interior is just worlds apart. Nice comparison.
motomusiq Motorweek's opinion represents that of the public in general! Other than driving performance, an SUV must offer a complete package of comfort and safety equipment, ease of use, space, quality, fuel economy and a good price wrapping the whole package, in other words bang for Buck! To be honest though, I was a little bit surprised that the Stelvio got low ranking! It's surely the best driving SUV out there, while its engine has an easier work to do, since the car is lighter than the competition (and since it's mated to the ZF 8-speed of course)! And its interior is simple, driver-focused and driver-friendly!
"blah blah ... the benchmark BMW x3." the next line out of his mouth after introducing the competitors and setting up the test parameters... "...BMW x3 doesn't make it to the top 4." sooo was the BMW ever the benchmark?
Being Volvo supporter and fan since year I am really disappointed by the recent Volvo models missing comfort features for the rear passengers: no seats inclination, no sunshades at the doors windows! For that money? Look at the Subaru Outback and others. No safety light in the doors (once opened in the night nobody will see them ...safety)
It’s nowhere near a complete comparison test without Mercedes GLC and Porsche Macan. Two of the most popular and well regarded mid-lux-SUV’s out there today!
They knew the 2019 Acura RDX was on the way since January when the Prototype was debuted in Detroit and since March when the Production was revealed in New York. Surely they could've waited a little bit and had a more complete comparison test... Just saying that the RDX would've been absolutely competitive against anyone of these premium SUVs (as would the MB GLC). Glaring omissions!
4 cylinder are great for a compact sedan but on a SUV...no. Life is too short to drive boring cars. Give me a V6 with all wheel drive, a clean and modern cockpit, leather interior, great bucket seats, led lights inside and out, air suspension, large wheels and plenty of after market upgrades. I chose the Audi SQ5. Place an APR power chip bhp increases from 354 to 433 and a major increase of torque. It’s not for everyone but driving your family in an SUV that you personalized is a great feeling. Just take care of your purchased items because it will take care of you. Also, they should have included the Mercedes GLC 300.
Can't quiet put my finger on it, but the Cadillac seems out of place to me. Like ya sure it's a Cadillac, ya sure it's compact. But is it really on the same level as the other brands?
I love how that new QX50 looks. Especially now that it looks practical and modern without being excessive like the NX. But that variable compression engine just screams reliability issues and expensive repair bills. And for that reason, I'm hesitant to consider one. If anything, I'd either give it 2 or 3 years or go for the simpler RDX or NX. I like the Cadillac too but the lack of a shut-off switch for that stupid Auto-Stop-Start system turns me away from it. No shut-off switch, no business.
The Mercedes GLC and Acura RDX should have been in this comparison. Not sure why the GLC wasn't, but MW should have waited for the RDX to be out since they knew it was coming. That being said, I think the RDX would have been top 3, ahead of the Infiniti. The GLC may have won this. But I do like the Volvo. Best-looking exterior and 2nd best interior to the GLC.
I really like the design of the QX50, but the new technology of a variable compression engine is a bit of a concern. I believe the Volvo should be the winner. The XT5 should score higher with its powertrain. Turbo 4s in crossovers aren't my cup of tea.
Damien Rasheed Yes they do. The MKC is a dressy version of the Ford Escape; the MKX is also a dressy version of the Ford Edge. Both of these have some similarities to their Ford siblings.
Kevron Harris true, but the domestic that was featured is essentially a dressy version of the Chevy Equinox, just as the Audi Q5 is a dressy version of the Volkswagen Tiguan. Badge engineering and platform sharing are ways of life in the auto industry. That doesn't explain why these vehicles were chosen and others weren't.
Damien Rasheed Seeing automakers re-badge their vehicles makes me laugh. Luxury brands are re-badging their cars from their "basic" siblings and try to put every detail on paper. Remember the Geo brand back in the 1990s? They re-badged the Toyota Corolla, Suzuki Vitara, Suzuki Swift, & Isuzu Impulse but sold them as the Prizm, Tracker, Metro, and Storm.
Wow that Lexus aree complete trash. Not competitive at all. Slow, ugly, and the worst infotain, ent interface ive ever experienced. You will crash. It's that consuming in a bad way. Americans are dumb though. It's like GM of the 90s, they just buy Toyota blindly
I think the Porsche Macan S probably outclasses all these in performance, maybe why they decided not to include it? Out of too many folks budget? Since the Q5 got 2nd place, surely the SQ5 and certainly the even more agile Macan outclass these. I don't need 'autonomous' driving. I can drive my own car.
The last three are the only ones that I would buy. X3, Stevlio, and Lexus. Dafuq front wheel drive is better? When I hear this, I hear of somebody who has absolutely no idea about cars.
Missing GLC and RLX, two of the top selling in the class. This comparison is half baked. Also, choosing the XC60 as the winner means that the reviewers don’t care about reliability.
Call me crazy but I just want a car or truck or SUV that's fun to drive! I could care less who has the biggest infotainment screen or the most vigorous rectal massage! Ok that last one maybe... But seriously does anybody make that without all the extra bloat crap that keeps making MSRP's go sky high?!?!? I am looking for something with room for 4 PLUS gear for less than $30,000 that is still sporty and fun to drive!
"Couldn't" care less...but I know what you mean. Anyway - try the new RDX! (Well, it's a little over $37K for the base model). It is getting rave reviews about its "fun to drive" personality.
We are in love with our Volvo. Coming from a guy who has owned 3 audis. I know...I'm surprised too
volvos are tank solid
Loving my XC40 big time!
I'm looking hard at used XC70 but the unsure reliability is really giving me pause
I love my Audi Q5 prestige model
Can’t wait to see a redo of this test next year. Refreshed 2019 Lincoln MKC, redesigned 2019 Acura RDX, refreshed 2019 Mercedes GLC (with that new large infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster), 2019 BMW X3 finally with standard pre-collision equipment, new 2019 Cadillac XT4 (which really seems to fit in more with this group), and a refreshed 2019 Porsche Macan. Frankly, there will be no bad choice in the class very soon.
I think I’d buy the Lexus. It’s the only one gonna be running in 15-20 years and that’s how long I’d own it.
"It's now FWD so it's now more engaging" - wtf fire that clueless trash talker. This is a farce!
Mgoblagulkablong I second that man!!!! The FWD statement makes no sense.
Yeah the previous QX50 was definitely faster and probably more engaging. Espcially considering the previous gen had a VQ37 325hp V6, RWD/AWD, and a 7 Speed auto. The new one is FWD, 2.0T 270hp, and a CVT.
he's just filling the gap.. blowing smoke if you will.. nonsense talker. I almost face palmed my keyboard.
A no for FWD on an SUV. A small sedan..yes but not an SUV.
“My wife had an XC60...I liked that car other than some reliability issues...”
RCBR because firstly, he was referring to an older model, and secondly let's not talk about reliability issues with BMW, Audi and Cadillac in the group, thirdly he was wrong to begin with, the older xc60 was one of the most reliable Volvos at that time and their most selling model.
Hats off to Volvo! Great looking vehicle, I'm glad it's doing well in comparison tests.
No RDX and no Macan lower trim? They both start below $53,000. And the 2018 Audi Q5 for $53,000 u get the warm weather package with amazing sport seats with ventilation. They feel almost sport Italian car design. Fit like a glove.
Panos DX NX and RDX and QX50 are the best
DIAMLER: which vehicle is best is a very subjective matter. Example Consumer Reports and JDPower rank Volvo's infotainment as it's biggest flow. Freezes, etc. Motorweek praises it and gives it 1st place. BMW to me has the top driving experience but everyone I owned had reliability issues. My Q5 feels like a glove. Others hate it.
The rdx wasn’t fully out and the rdx is smaller than these it would compete with more of a Lincoln mkc rather than the mkx these would compete with
The RDX belongs in this class, and so does the MKC. The MKX/Nautilus is a midsize, it's bigger than all of these.
Panos DX The Macan would cost about $15-20k more, comparably equipped!
Need to include the new Acura RDX and Mercedes-Benz GLC300.
I like the Alfa Romeo. Looks the best and it doesn't feel like an SUV. It's like a Ferrari SUV. The rest is boring.
Your mechanic picks that one too
I had a Volvo cross over as a rental before, I was really impressed by it.
I have to agree with most of this, I went to the auto show expecting to love the Q5 the most, but - it came in second. The XC60 is stunning, inside and out. Truly beautiful and luxurious.
As far as which one drives the best, it could be a whole different story, but damn the XC60 is nice.
The RDX will be a big hit - It'll probably deliver most of the goodness of the Q5 at a better price and with the quality and low maintenance everyone expects from a Honda product.
out of the top four the Infiniti is much more reliable, best small suv on the market right now
I don't know man. I question the reliability of that complicated VC engine. But then again, I felt the same about their steer-by-wire system and I have not heard of any complaints about the system failing.
Not surprised. Volvo is in a roll! Well deserved.
Alfa romeo best sporty drive🚗
I don't agree with their rankings. Recently cross shopped the Mercedes GLC300, BMW X3, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Volvo XC60 (all 2018 models) and found the BMW to have the best blend of comfort, performance, user friendly infotainment, space and surprisingly value. Found the infotainment screen in the XC60 to freeze during the test drive, the engine to be unrefined and lacking in performance, the ride to be too stiff and the price (on lease) way too high.
the first one to see Volvo suspension too stiff!

Why so many car markers going for a 2.0T engine setup? Every car tested except for Cadillac had a 2.0T. At this price point I would want a V6 not a 4 cylinder!
James Franklin new gubberment regulations.
James Franklin 4-cylinder, 2.0 liter is Euro standard engine size.
Okay I got it! I was thinking on a USA scale of things and not global because some countries tax engines based on size.
only real reason to buy the Cadillac.
James Franklin government fuel efficiency standards
As a Volvo guy I’m so pleased with how they’ve come back. Having said that the Audi is probably the better car though ;)
Cadillac's interiors and GM interior's in general are so sub-par compared to the rest of the industry. Go sit in an xc60 or xc90 and then compare it to any Cadillac. This shows Motorweek's priorities. If you are a driving enthusiast, look elsewhere for opinions
motomusiq Motorweek's opinion represents that of the public in general! Other than driving performance, an SUV must offer a complete package of comfort and safety equipment, ease of use, space, quality, fuel economy and a good price wrapping the whole package, in other words bang for Buck!

Motorweek is the original Regular Car Reviews
Did I miss the MKC or was it left out on purpose luv mine, just saying.👍🏻
only the new refreshed one could fight fair in this comparo. They'd just slaughter it for being "old news". I had one as a rental and I LOVED it.
LOL @ that Lexus mess that is hardly refreshed still FUGLY!!!! So where is Lincoln and Acura
Tpr1634 MIC is old but the 2.3t might have put up a fight. No Buick Envision 2.0T either.
"blah blah ... the benchmark BMW x3." the next line out of his mouth after introducing the competitors and setting up the test parameters... "...BMW x3 doesn't make it to the top 4." sooo was the BMW ever the benchmark?
As much as I like the XC60, I like the Q5 more. Here's to reading the article.
2019 Acura RDX was just released to the public June 1st. They probably couldn't get it in time for this video
You really should add the new Acura RDX to this comparison too.
Gotta love Volvo
It’s nowhere near a complete comparison test without Mercedes GLC and Porsche Macan.
Two of the most popular and well regarded mid-lux-SUV’s out there today!
I'm a bit confused: which model does the QX50 actually replace? The EX, the FX or the JX?
fx
Penis Thank you!
Doesn't look that big though! The previous FX was much bigger! The new one looks more like an EX in size!
Penis is incorrect. It replaces the EX. Its Infinitis compact CUV. The FX is Infintis mid-sized CUV and will not be replaced any time soon.
penis is not incorrect. do your research.
Where is the GLC???
How do you guys only have 200k subscribers??? That older dude is DADDY when it comes to knowledge and expertise
Acura RDX is missing, likewise, Lincoln
I so very much agree ...plus the Lincolns Acuras have more kit than some of these a la carte entries
wlsop
Lexus finishes last?!
BMW and Audi have the best styling.
No Mercedes GLC?
Canal Oval Probably too expensive!
thecman26 ours was 45k. Not expensive at all compared to the list.
Saad Qureshi Just a guess that is
GLC is better than all of these.
That was pretty low spec, I'm assuming. Or, you just got a really good deal. I've never even seen a loaner below $52k.
No Acura RDX?
Joaquin Martinez the rdx is in its new generation therefore there are no production units to test the current gen is too dated for the test
Just hitting showrooms now, so a wee late to the party
Joaquin Martinez I hate acura
Volvo FTW!!
4 cylinder are great for a compact sedan but on a SUV...no. Life is too short to drive boring cars. Also, they should have included the Mercedes GLC 300.
So infotainment take priority over actual vehicle performance?
Donald Salkovick Not that it should be entirely but it is an integral part of the car now with smartphone connection
Exactly my squibble with these reviewers. Who uses their infotainment all the time......just give me CarPlay and Android Auto and a screen.
MW should do a full follow-up with the same vehicles. It'll be interesting to see what they are worth now and how are they holding up.
I think the Acura RDX wasn’t quite out yet when they filmed this and did the review
Can't quiet put my finger on it, but the Cadillac seems out of place to me. Like ya sure it's a Cadillac, ya sure it's compact. But is it really on the same level as the other brands?
GM has put themselves in this situation so many times it seems.
Where's the RDX
The upcoming Cadillac XT4 is considered a luxury compact crossover. The XT5 is considered a mid-sized luxury crossover.
The XT5 has always been an in-between size. Bigger than an X3, but not quite as big as an X5. But yes, the XT4 now belongs in this spot.
People are gonna be SHOCKED when the new infiniti engine turns out to be junk.
It sucks that the RDX was not present for this comparison.
I knew at the beginning that volvo is the winner. But I thought BMW is the second place
They included the Alfa Romeo which will sell about a 1000 units nationwide, but no Lincoln MKX or MKC?
I love how that new QX50 looks. Especially now that it looks practical and modern without being excessive like the NX. But that variable compression engine just screams reliability issues and expensive repair bills. And for that reason, I'm hesitant to consider one. If anything, I'd either give it 2 or 3 years or go for the simpler RDX or NX. I like the Cadillac too but the lack of a shut-off switch for that stupid Auto-Stop-Start system turns me away from it. No shut-off switch, no business.
Only automotive journalists would take SUV's to the track and care about the results.
"We have an older XC60 and other than reliability issues, we liked it"... reliability issues? Why would you get another one?!
M Christopher Bryan That's what I was thinking when I heard that!! Lol🤣
I have a feeling the rdx may have taken top score.
RDX would have killed this comparison.
That Infiniti is a beauty
The Mercedes GLC and Acura RDX should have been in this comparison. Not sure why the GLC wasn't, but MW should have waited for the RDX to be out since they knew it was coming. That being said, I think the RDX would have been top 3, ahead of the Infiniti. The GLC may have won this. But I do like the Volvo. Best-looking exterior and 2nd best interior to the GLC.
Volvo standing out. Lol looks mundane and boring. I'd rather take the alfa romeo stelvio. Def a head turner and better performance.
Why didn’t you include the Lincoln MKC/Nautilus that is suitable for this comparison
I really like the design of the QX50, but the new technology of a variable compression engine is a bit of a concern. I believe the Volvo should be the winner. The XT5 should score higher with its powertrain. Turbo 4s in crossovers aren't my cup of tea.
Why no Mercedes, jaguar, Range Rover, Porsche
Why was Caddilac the only Domestic? Lincoln Has compact Utes...
I would vote for the Alfa Romeo for styling
when is volvo gonna come out with a body on frame pickup
You knew Cadillac could not win with Motorweek. It will be far more reliable than the other top 3.
I'd say these are all mid size crossovers. Compact would be X1/2, Q3, XC40, and the upcoming XT4.
Why no range velar
Wouldn't the XT5 and XC60 compete more in the midsize segment? Also, where would the RDX and MKC rank?
Stelvio for the win
Long term reliable car???
Dan Hurd really or is that sarcasim
frankiemionetto fmissone missone yea but I rather push the Stelvio than druve the boring lexus
You have drop the Infiniti down for the CVT, lack of Apple CarPlay and miss-matched screens. Even the fonts are different from top to bottom screen.
Go Sweden!!
A Euro luxury wagon challenge would be informative...pretty please?
I'll take the Caddy !!
Wow that Lexus aree complete trash. Not competitive at all. Slow, ugly, and the worst infotain, ent interface ive ever experienced. You will crash. It's that consuming in a bad way. Americans are dumb though. It's like GM of the 90s, they just buy Toyota blindly
Great looking
The Cadillac is my favorite
I think the Porsche Macan S probably outclasses all these in performance, maybe why they decided not to include it? Out of too many folks budget? Since the Q5 got 2nd place, surely the SQ5 and certainly the even more agile Macan outclass these. I don't need 'autonomous' driving. I can drive my own car.
Where are RDX, GLC? Or even the Macan?
Motorweek is always behind
Where is the Rolls-Royce Cullinan?
where is the lincoln mkc
No Mercedes, Land Rover, or Acura? BMW X3 and Alpha at the bottom? Doubt it!
I’d buy a GLC over all these. Volvo looks decent though.
No new 2019 Acura RDX ?
The last three are the only ones that I would buy. X3, Stevlio, and Lexus. Dafuq front wheel drive is better? When I hear this, I hear of somebody who has absolutely no idea about cars.
Missing GLC and RLX, two of the top selling in the class.
This comparison is half baked.
Also, choosing the XC60 as the winner means that the reviewers don’t care about reliability.
I will take the Nx
$50,000 that's a lot of money to spend on a car.
crossovers make me cry
except the volvo
Where’s the Merc GLC?
Their mechanic.
Idk the benz has the best interior quality.
Lots of functional parts will break within 6 years 😂
Lincoln MKC?
Xt5 X5 rivals ?
Wow! You like the XC60? Might have liked Lincoln MKX even better!
very fine
Nerds tests SUV's. Hence the rankings. Here is my list. #1 BMW X3, #2 Audi Q5, #3 Mercedes GLC, #4 Volvo XC60, #5 Alpha Romeo Stelvio, #6 Acura RDX, #7 Cadillac XT5, #8 Infiniti QX50 #9 Land Rover Discovery Sport, #10 Lexus NX 300.
Engine lag......theses are soccer mom transport
Check out the Fiat 500X.
G vS That's a bit small for me!
BluePacificRQF I am really looking at a used Chevy SS or Kia Stinger in the next year or two.
nice video
Missing rdx, glc and mkc.
So Lincoln isnt an American entry if, allowed, and vastly overlooked looks better than that Caddy... but Oh well
The Mercedes glc suv/ coupe would beat all of these cars
Be careful you don't get shot up there
