Since their debut, Before the Sun Goes Down, in 2014, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley have made a name for themselves as some of the hottest country and bluegrass players in the business. As individuals, their credits range from Willie Nelson to Earl Scruggs to Merle Haggard-and as a duo, they’ve toured and recorded with artists including Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, Jorma Kaukonen & Hot Tuna, Luther Dickinson, and Molly Tuttle. It’s likely their forthcoming full-length release, Living in a Song, will only bolster their already impressive reputation.
Out on February 10th, Living in a Song is a new collection of two covers and 10 originals that were inspired by Ickes and Hensley’s life on the road. They collaborated with long-time producer Brent Maher (Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson) along with some award-winning songwriters to compose a total of 40 songs, which were then trimmed down to the resulting selection. That final cut of material leans into a classic country sound, with some Americana and bluegrass thrown in.
Along with the aforementioned credits, Ickes and Hensley have long been established, separately, as formidable musicians. Ickes has been International Bluegrass Music Association Dobro Player of the Year an incredible 15 times, and Hensley made his debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry at just 11 years old. In other words, the two have been around the block, and especially know their way around dobros and flattop acoustics.
Earlier this month, PG’s John Bohlinger met up with the duo at 3Sirens Studio in Nashville, where they played some mind-blowing music, and gave a rundown of some of their favorite guitars and gear.

This was so much fun…thanks again, Premier Guitar! Y’all are the best!
We couldn't keep our jaw off the floor ... luckily Bohlinger held it together better than our crew behind the cameras. Thanks to you and Rob for participating! Complete showstoppers.
you're a monster player man
9 more months until my PreWar arrives! . Love my LP 58 RI too. The disease continues. 😆
That is some of the tastiest playing. Absolutely amazing.
Couldn't agree more!
I know virtually nothing about bluegrass, but Trey is the first dude I've ever seen to use a freaking HM-2 and a Whammy as part of his sound and I love that. Absolutely genius
Trey is one of my favorite players here lately.. his voice is AMAZING as well. His guitars are killer and he is a Halloween fan. I purchased his $30 guitar class online and I highly recommend it. Love this dude!!! Great rig rundown..... maybe my favorite thus far.... great job. Oh yeah, I got that 80's Martin hat thanks to Ebay and a $100 bill.
I love the money shots! I enjoy Bollinger’s enthusiasm. These two players are A+
Rob and Trey are fantastic. This is a great episode. I appreciate the nice use of chapters in this video too.
One of my favorite rig rundowns. I mean how talented can two people be? Thanks
What a wicked pair of musicians . . . John you're such a great interviewer. Cheers.
Love seeing more acoustic musicians on this series! 🎉
I love this fella! What a brilliant player!
Trey was the most fun "Rig Rundown" I've seen.
Finally! Been looking forward to this for a while
That Harmony sounds GREAT!!!
Have never heard a better guitarist. Hypnotic.
Saw these guys with Taj Majall in Seattle. Spectacular playing!
Awesome video its always great to see what gear my favorite artists use.
Gosh! These guys sure can pick.
🔥🔥These guys are just kill-ing; looking forward to checking out more of their music.
The D18 is awesome
Oh my god how did I not know about THIS rig rundown? Love these guys. Saw their cover of "Friend of the Devil" like a year ago and was instantly sold, had to seek out more. Man, Trey Hensley is a monster - beautiful voice and chops to match. Not to mention Rob Ickes, I got a friend who is super into playing dobro and Rob is on his Mount Rushmore with like Jerry Douglass and Josh Graves, super tasteful, clean player with a fantastic ear for melody, something I think my friend could learn from lol. And is that a Queens of the Stone Age shirt I spy on Trey there? Goddamn I'm in love. You guys kick ass.
I fully expected to stop after Trey’s bit was done but I really enjoyed the slide bit!
awesome !!!
diner metal, hahaha you guys are diner metal... amazing r-down can't believe that I missed it... happy new year!!
Hahahahahaha man this must be one of the funniest rig rundowns ever published
Ps. Gotta love their playin skills man
I bet Bollinger was loving this whole reso session.
Me too !!! Didn't know this was coming. But I was looking forward to it too .😐👍
Hope you enjoyed it!
I have a D41 also but I can’t make it sound like that..Incredible players
heavy metal pedal + acoustic guitar , okay....fck yeahha!
I play a Byrl resonator guitar, same size and wood as Rob’s, though different color, and it is amazing. By far the loudest I’ve ever played. Today I put on a set of the D’Addario Nickel and Bronze strings Rob recommends (0.016 to 0.056), and what a huge improvement if you want that Dobro whine. I was using Beard strings, and they had gigantic bass on the Byrl. These D’Addario have much less bass, but much more whine, and are just as loud.
The Scheerhorn still sounds the best of the new reso,s!
Just can play anything he likes. So talented.
Rob sounds like he perpetually just took a drag from a joint.
True, but that's just how he talks. I took lessons from Rob many years ago, and when I saw "the Californians" on SNL years later I recognised the sound 😀
Wow
Did they mention the mic he was using?
i see that john mayer watch, trey
I do ❤️ John Mayer.
@@TreyAHensley i'm wearing the same watch right now! i couldn't help but recognize it
What is the name of the tune Trey and Rob played in the end? I remember Brian Setzer doing it live on his "Rockin' by Myself" album (if i'm not mistaken)
It's called black mountain rag
Love that harmony. I hate plain acoustics
What song is being played at 16:06? Any help is appreciated, heard it dozens of times but don't know this old classic.
Funny post !
Knk mini instead of that LR baggs
I don't think the last section is Beaumont rag.
Black mountain rag
I like BIG FRETS and I cannot lie.
The b bender is a lousy gimmick!
Oh come on now, just because you can’t afford one or use it if you had it 😂 don’t make it a gimmick ya goober
@@texasviking1 😅
Tell that to Clarence White or Marty Stuart!
