Oh yeah.. my 2017 Audi S3 has never gotten stuck in the snow in Minnesota.. this car also has only used all season continental extreme contacts with the 19” rim. Highest amount of snow I’ve used it with was 14inches. The only annoying thing is when things beep because the cameras are covered but it only happens when you’re at a stop. But yeah it crushes snow! Never question it.
That was brilliant 👏 I once drive my A4 Quattro up a hill with fresh snow just over half that deep on a skiing vacation in Quebec and it performed amazingly too. That rally heritage is not to be sniffed at!
When driving my TTrs, Auto mode works best for predictability in winter weather. I even get to swing the tail out and hold it a bit around corners if I want. It’s sad they didn’t allow the new 2023 RS3 in Canada 😢

Quattros have always been among the best and certainly the best balanced at being exactly what they’re intended to be. My cousin had a 1987 Quattro Coupe GT on ‘87. It was great in winter but it was a great road car all year around especially in the curves.
if the snow would have been old and compacted he would have lost that front bumper and oil pan
RS3 has some special features compare to other models, like true vectoring rear axle with hypoid instead diff and clutch on each side of it, AOA said it even does overdrive faster rear axle similar to what Acura and Honda does, Honda has special hardware to make it happen, idk how Audi does it, Just as Honda although RS3 is front biased it can send 80% to rear wheels (Honda 70) which will make it rear wheel drive like feel

Who'd have thought an audi with Quattro awd is good in the snow? Lol. My S6 and S8 with hakkapeliitta tires were amazing north of Toronto. My S8 had 20" winter tires and were amazing.
This quattro is very different from the quattro you're used to. But it only shows that you cannot go wrong with a vast majority of modern AWD systems when it comes to tough road conditions.

You could also try 235/55 R18 ones in winter. You loose really "directness" and the ride will be more wobbly on fast changes on directions.. but therefore it's much more comfortable (like on pillows), you spare your good rims, get probably even better snow performance and you can put some chains on them.. so get even in deeper snow :D

Always watch your temp gauge if you're busting drifts in a blizzard to get home cus snow will pack the front end and cause an overheat condition.

I had this happen last winter. We no longer live in Alaska due to medical reasons but last winter we got a ton of snow in our small town right before Christmas. My wife was out of town with the kids and I thought it would be fun to head out for a drive in the fresh deep powder. I was about two-feet deep on average and that did not include any drifts that were at least three-feet. I was able to plow through with ease but had over heating and had to stop at one point, back, and clear everything out. I also almost lost power because snow packed into engine bay in addition to the alternator. This was in an 04 Explorer. Darn thing had a decent system even with crappy all seasons.
Modern engine ECU's will pull power when it gets hot and give you plenty of warning at least!

AUDI!! Thank you so much for this video! I have told people many times that ive driven Audi's places trucks couldnt go, and it's true. This is an RS3, getting around with no issues in all that snow, and it will smoke 99% of cars you see on the road in CO. I have always loved Audi's, and ive owned many of them. Great video fellas!
Very nice of Audi to lend you the car, with snow tires, in quite a deal of snow. Impressive!! Confident!
It doesn’t matter if you have a base model car, performance oriented car, or a daggum truck. The appropriate tire for the season/conditions is what’s best. Sure you can rock all seasons with awd vehicles but a dedicated snow tire is the best way to go. Don’t be cheap.

Cool video and good on you for trying it but I don't think it would do so well beyond "virgin" snow. Here in Ottawa that snowfall would soon become compacted and rutted making for much tougher conditions and the need for actual ground clearance!
Yeah, when the top of the snow pack melts during the day and refreezes again overnight that's when the real challenge begins.
It sounds soooo good. One of my favorite cars made.
I had a Dodge Magnum AWD R/T several years ago, the hemi engine made it awesome in snow, being low, and heavy made it so good in the snow!
i love audis especially this one. just wish i could afford the price and maintenance bill that follows them.
I have an ‘18 RS3 and I’m still trying to figure out what is this “high maintenance bill” thing is keep hearing. The maintenance is no different than my ‘11 Mustang GT.

I love how even the day after the snow stops they don't plow the streets in your area. Around here they plow the streets within an hour or 2 after the snow stops and it really annoys me because I can't have any fun driving in the deep snow. I think I need to move to your neighborhood.

If you really want to have fun in the snow, get a audi Q7 or Q8. All the ground clearance you need!!! My first winter in my Q7 and it's been a blast!!!! I sold a 08 megacab on 35" tires, that was a impressive vehicle in the snow, this Audi might be just as good!!!

In the late 70's I had a 914 with home deep spoiler that I didn't take off before the first snow with standard tires. Went thru 8 " and was a snow plow

Its hard to beat a quattro audi in the snow, my wife’s B9 A4 is an absolute tank in the winter months.
I have a ‘22 RS3 with 18” wheels and Blizzak WS90’s. Makes it a tank. Those sottozeros performed very well but you should see how it is with the Blizzaks!

Had an Audi b6 Quattro and snow performance was great. It didn’t struggle once even on summer tyres 😂
years ago we lived in Kremmling and I would strap a 6x6 to the rear and pull it around the driveway to pack down the snow w/ our trusty old a6 avant- quattro.
Quite an impressive performance by the little Audi!
If in the solid overfrozen stuff for extended days, clear out the wheel wells and gaps whenever it's slightly possible. gets caked in for low cars. or, you'll end up with unpleasing rub and new sounds!

My A4 has kicked ass in this most recent storm in Denver. These cars are built for German winters. It does better than my Chevy SUV’s, no joke!
Yes the Quattro with snow tires works well on the roads. I’d still take a 4Runner with BFG AT’s or Falken Wildpeak AT3w’s for really deep snow
I would take this Audi over a 4Runner in ANY conditions.

Last week we had a big dump here in Burnaby, British Columbia and I went out in 6" of fresh snow to try out my new snow tires on my classic '98 Subaru Outback wagon - a set of Blackhawk Ice Prey branded tires from OK Tire stores, their in-house Chinese made brand - and they worked fabulous - and at $95 each, were a great value. The Subaru with 210,000 miles on it was perfect, and I went out to a big unplowed lot for some skids... with snow blasting over the windshield, it was great fun. I tried some starts and stops in the deepest snow I could, and starts and stops on some hills too. Everyone should do that (in a controlled manner) every start of winter, to explore their car's capabilities. Besides, it's great fun on sunny day!
Tomorrow we will see how well that Audi does in Moab.

The real winner are the tires. Winter rated tires makes a massive difference in snow traction. I use Nokian WRG4.
Iv'e got a 2023 RS3 and live in Maine, so drive it in snow all the time. It's decent in snow, but it's not as good as the other Audi models that have legit Quattro instead of the haldex.
Don't get me wrong, I love the car and really like the rear torque splitter for fun's sake, but it's not as good in the snow as other Audis I've had.

Oh, Audi quattro (torsen) is so fun with fresh and deep snow. I have video on my channel from few years ago where I drive Audi A6 tdv6 in deep snow. Still smile at the memory.
Does it still use any Torsen devices? I thought they went to their own design (not to mention Toyota purchasing Torsen).
@@ALMX5DP No torsen here, I believe that torque splitter is a clutch pack - a very good one:)
Yea, I worded that poorly. I myself used torsen quattro, but I don’t know what this one uses. Seems to work though. Not a fan of haldex but probably the new ones work ok too.

You should do the worst snow car in Boulder. I can’t believe how many Toyota Prius’s are stuck in snow banks, around Boulder. They’re low ground clearance and they’re owners don’t put good snow tires on them. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stuck behind them.

I had an F250 4X4 and my S4 buried in 4 feet of snow. The truck wouldn’t move and the Audi didn’t seem to notice there was snow.

Wow cool. I would still prefer a Truck or SUV that still has better ground clearance. Anything more than 6 inches incase there’s ice underneath or big chunks in driveways. Wouldn’t damage the front bumpers. When wanting to sell it.

Fun in the snow till the belly pan gets packed with snow and breaks off and drags the ground, I have experience with that on my Audi.
I would love to see this car on the TFL Slip test!
I own one and live a town over from Boulder if they'd like to borrow it for a slip test.
A problem I have had with VW group cars under these conditions are cracked under-body shields. Especially the front one under the engine bay. The cold makes the plastic brittle and the compacting snow presses up on the shield and breaks off the tabs. I would not do that with my own car.

Not true Quattro. Transverse mounted engine requiring a torque converter.
Audi knows their product to lend you one for this.

Had an 01 A4 2.8 Quattro and would take it out in the snow any chance I got. Not once ever got stuck, it’s what Audis are meant to do
