@RocknRoll707 And no disrespect to the Norwegian pilots because I know they're just as well trained as us, but during a combat exercise with the Royal Norwegain Air Force, 3 Swedish Gripens went up against 5 RNAF F-16's. The Result was 5-0, 5-0, 5-1 after having flown 3 rounds. During Loyal Arrow in Sweden, 3 F-15C's from the USAF were intercepted by a Gripen acting as an aggressor. The result was 2 F-15's having been shot down and one managed to escape due to better thrust/weight.
@OlderG0ds The F-22 has mainly focused on radar cross section signature reducing technology. Hence it's never supposed to get "close" to any fighters. It's main task is to deliver the first strike in air-air combat over extremely large distances. Most close range missiles use IR/Heat which means that since no target is to come that close anyway, it was not focused on as much. There's several videos on youtube showing the difference in IR between the Rafale and the F-22.
@OlderG0ds You are right about the Pratt & Whitney F119 being one of the most advanced engines as of today, but that is mostly due to other factors as being able to super cruising stealthy, Thrust vectoring, massive acceleration and great speed.

Although, while having external weapon bays and canards, they can't really match the stealthiness of the F-35 or the F-22. But according to some USAF sources, the F22 radar signature is that of a small bird, the F-35 that of a smaller chicken, and the Gripen NG with air-air missiles as that of a medium-large bird of pray, such as an Eagle

Combat radius for Gripen C is 800km, on internal fuel. 1550km with external fuel. The Super Hornet has two engines, which increases its fuel consumption in comparison to the small and aerodynamically slippery Gripen. The Super Hornet suffers from VERY high drag. It can't go supersonic at low altitude even in clean configuration. Not even without pylons. The Super Hornet is an aerodynamic failure.
It's a pride of Thai people to got this High performance-Low coast fighter to protect our country. At first we never heard about "JAS-39" we guess that new fighter to replace F-5 should be a F-16 F-15 or Eurofighter but when Thai airforce announce that they have chosen JAS 39 all of us feel stress out about the perfomance. but after when we known that Sweden give us a source code and some aircraft technology. all of us feel need more 2-4 squadron of this. There are no winners or losers, it's about training and saving lives" Still the same as in the past, learning to survive a first ten missions.
@Puzzoozoo Its not the upfront cost that is low but the life cycle cost. Maintenance is easy and the aircraft is reliable. Flight hours are cheap so you can have a high availability with a comparatively small amount of planes.
@Saffronwing1 the 117 was shot downs because the mission flight path is at a preplanned pre-agreed upon as per some treaty....that allowed the sam operators to plan and even study in advance what weakness can be exploited. that caused its demise, if it was flown where no one would expect it then it would remain today as one very reknowned craft.
Here,in Brazil,what weights more against the Gripen NG as air defense fighter is its potentially much smaller combat radius without underwing fuel tanks, when compared against Super Hornet and Rafale, and its dependence of made in USA components. @Puzzoozoo ......well they're not getting the Swedish package. The Swedes aren't turning loose with the uprated engines, avionics, or weapon system. Most of the export aircraft get a very capable "shelf" package that costs less, but is still much better that what the Russians will sell them. An exception to this is the aircraft that were sold to the Czech Republic through a NATO refit program. Their version is close to being like Sweden's......with the added expense of course.

F-22 has addressed all aspects of stealth including infrared/heat , from the engine shape and cooling the exhaust internally before it comes out the afterburners and the missile bays hide additional heat sources etc. Gripen and Rafale have nothing on that. Patriots can be compared with Sa-12 or higher. 40 to 50% has no change to survive first day of war, you really think a Gripen will have more chances to survive than any other jet? If that really was the case any country would like to order a Gripen.

They all have reduced radar cross sections and make use of radar absorbent material but they're not exactly hard to find. But as I was saying under wing munitions are not made for stealth, they significantly increase a radar return. Keep in mind wave reflections are just one aspect of the stealth spectrum.
The Swiss Airforce coming versions of the JAS 39 Gripen E/F Multitask Fighter are clearly superior to the French Dassault Rafale in several many important aspects; one that I have understood isn't yet very well-known about even amongst the Pilots that currently now are being educated & trained to fly & operate the JAS 39 E/F Versions, is that the air-to-air radar width "signature" of the Plane is only about less than 80-90 square cm, when the Dassault Rafale gives a radar width sign of 2 meters!

The Bad things of the Gripen NG are: combat radius not good enough in air interception,less cargo under wings than the other fighters in the FX-2 competition and the unwillinged presence of many USA made components in the plane.
The Gripen is a very attractive proposition for countries that want ultra high performance, but don't want to break the bank buying U.S., French or German(Eurofighter) aircraft.....or deal with Russia's bureaucratic bullshit. The Gripen is relatively inexpensive, but is well designed and built, and has many common components from American and European sources. You can't go wrong buying several full strength squadrons of these things.

@avro206 ....that's a distinct possibility about the F-35. I'm not too happy about the U.S. Navy's adoption of those things on aircraft carriers......one engine over the ocean? Not such a great idea. Ever since the 1950s, the Navy has always had twin engine fighters and bombers on the flight deck...F-4s,F-14s, F-18s, A-6s, Vigilantes, etc. It's so much safer. I'd like to see a navalized F-22, extremely expensive but well worth it.

Brazil made a mistake not accepting the development of Mirage 2000Br at the same level of the Saudis Mirage, with some gadgets from Rafale electrinics. Much cheaper than Rafales an almost the same capabilities, with total transfer of tecnologie, as a previous step of total independencie.

Underwing double hardpoints doesn't make bigger the RCS !? US pilots are the most operational experienced pilots, any Norwgegian, Dutch or Danish pilot would agree about that. Gripens never lost any aerial encounter!? In the US? In Europe, Frisian Flag, changes were 50%, F16 versus Gripen.

However it seems to lack some serious air superiority aswell as range and economy. But I'm afraid that the Gripen E/F is soon to be doomed. India just ditched it, Brazil favors the Rafale, no Scandinavian country is going to buy it apart from Sweden, and even here in Sweden, the left-wing parties is trying to delay its entrance to the Swedish Air Force.

@OlderG0ds True. But it's stealthy enough to be a nuisance for enemy radars at least. I think it was classed as semi-stealth, but i'm not sure.
With the addition of Meteor missiles on Gripen NG there wil be no time for a dog fight by bigger and heavier enemy aircrafts.

The Gripen is a very attractive proposition for countries that want ultra high performance, but don't want to break the bank buying U.S., French or German(Eurofighter) aircraft.....or deal with Russia's bureaucratic bullshit. The Gripen is relatively inexpensive, but is well designed and built, and has many common components from American and European sources. You can't go wrong buying several full strength squadrons of these things.

@avro206 ....that's a distinct possibility about the F-35. I'm not too happy about the U.S. Navy's adoption of those things on aircraft carriers......one engine over the ocean? Not such a great idea. Ever since the 1950s, the Navy has always had twin engine fighters and bombers on the flight deck...F-4s,F-14s, F-18s, A-6s, Vigilantes, etc. It's so much safer. I'd like to see a navalized F-22, extremely expensive but well worth it.

To Gripen NG have performance capable to be compared with the better fighter planes of today,it would need to have a much more powerfull engine, AESA radar and a bigger wing with more underwing hardpoints. If you disagree, please compare with the competitors the number of aams that NG is capable to transport,radar range against fighter size target and combat radius WITHOUT underwing fuel tanks. NG doesn't even have the possibility of install CFTs... If yes,show me a picture of NG with it.

Brazil made a mistake not accepting the development of Mirage 2000Br at the same level of the Saudis Mirage, with some gadgets from Rafale electrinics. Much cheaper than Rafales an almost the same capabilities, with total transfer of tecnologie, as a previous step of total independencie.

@Tordenguden The good thin about F-35 is the radar system, witch have a great range, so i theory a pilot would be able to kill the war target before the war target sees u on the radar. However, for intercepting russian fighters, and show air superiority, the Gripen would be a better option, or the EF. I would prefer Gripen though, since im a nordist, scandinavist...what ever hehe. I want a unified Scandinavia.

Why it hasn't CFTs? But,more than this,mine major concern is about the maximum range of its AESA radar : with so small size and single engined,will its radar have enough power against lowest RCS targets ?
US pilots are the most operational experienced pilots, any Norwgegian, Dutch or Danish pilot would agree about that. Gripens never lost any aerial encounter!? In the US? In Europe, Frisian Flag, changes were 50%, F16 versus Gripen.

@Tordenguden Yeah that's probably true. If you ask me, the F-35 has great potential as a strategic bomber/strike fighter. However it seems to lack some serious air superiority aswell as range and economy. But I'm afraid that the Gripen E/F is soon to be doomed. India just ditched it, Brazil favors the Rafale, no Scandinavian country is going to buy it apart from Sweden, and even here in Sweden, the left-wing parties is trying to delay its entrance to the Swedish Air Force.
If a country is going to help the Sweds in building their aircraft, is is going to be Denmark first of alle, beacause, they already build a lot of the components for the grippen, and second Denmark is a close ally to Sweden :)

The Newspaper that you've read haven't provided you with accurate information what so ever; believe me, I'm personally very insighted (technically as well as more qualifiedly) in the JAS 39 Gripen future versions & development specifications; the true facts are that SAAB Air/Defence are working on further plans to form an advanced unmanned E/F Vers. of the Gripen multitask fighter PARALLELL to the "manned" one & two-seater versions, the versions that the Swiss Airforce have signed-on to operate.

How is possible the Gripen have almost the same combat radius as SH if its cell is so slim when compared with american fighter ? If SAAB doesn't make all the Gripen components and if there's the dependence of american components,how to have confidence - not in SAAB but in USA makers - when there's the possibility of boycots !?...
