Exit Interview: The end of the Dillinger Escape Plan
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 гру 2017
- It's all over now: For two decades, the Dillinger Escape Plan tore down the seemingly exclusionary walls separating various music genres to create a furious synergy of their own design. While they routinely took metal and hardcore to new levels of extremity over the course of six albums and several EPs, Dillinger were the dictionary definition of danger when it came to live gigs, simultaneously enrapturing fans and confounding ER doctors. Now the band will finish their storied career with three dates (Dec. 27 - 29) at the New York City venue Terminal 5, joined at various junctures by Code Orange, Daughters and God Mother, as well as teaming up with Mike Patton for a one-time-only performance of their 2002 EP, Irony Is A Dead Scene.
Last week, some middle-aged millionaire had the last interview with DEP braintrust guitarist Ben Weinman and frontman Greg Puciato. So we went through our archives to reveal one of the first interviews the duo did after announcing that their 2016 LP Dissociation would be their last. Here they discuss their chief motivations of the past 20 years; the tolls (physical and psychic) it takes to be in this band; why the adage "never say never" is a fallacy; and which actors they'd like to see play them when the Hollywood bio-pic of their career gets made. You'll laugh. You'll smile. You'll dare legions of other bands to take up their torch.

The Dillinger Retirement Plan
LMAO
AHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA
I don't get it
lmaoooooooooooooo. Better than Metallica's retirement plan to become a dad-band
That's one of the best comments ever
They finally escaped
fax
😭😭😭😭
underrated comment
Fuck! My world will NEVER be the same now.
They had planned it for years
I respect them more for calling it quits when they realize it’s time and ending on a good note then I would if they started putting out albums just to put out albums. Incredible band. Will be missed
absolutely right
I’m sad that I never saw them live
And you should be, I saw them in Baltimore, mine and Greg's home town. He spit fire and they got fined like 10 grand, was right after pyro was banned indoors. The fluid literally misted onto my face. He also began by hurling the mic stand into the crowd. They were in top fucking form.
fucking same man. I just got into them this year and it bums me out.
Same dog
I got to see them three times live in sweden......sadly never with Demitri singing.
I just think about how stupid I was. They were in my country, and even in my not that big city like 10 months before they broke up. I tried to listen to their music, and thought that it was bad. And about a month before their last gig ever, I got into them...
Life would be more awesome if everyone was backlit by blue light.
great band. their last album is incredible. I'll miss them.
looking forward for new music from Greg's Black Queen
yeah dude i have showed the black queen to all of my friends and they love it.
I've been listening to it since its release back in Jan 2016. I'm sooo ready for new material from them
I think its coming soon to be honest
hey check out giraffe tongue orchestra
its bens band
sure I listened to them. it's pretty good
So much respect for this. Literally one of the best bands ever, each album more incredible than the last imo, with Disassociation being the zenith. They literally had no ulterior reason to disband. It was a purely artistic decision. They felt that the Dillinger story arc was coming to the perfect ending spot, and they didn’t want to spoil the majesty of its totality by throwing on extraneous appendages. They’ve left a perfect body of work behind them. Unbelievably gutsy decision, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of another band doing this. Dillinger are on the same existential plain as Tool and Animals as Leaders, in terms of how immaculate, authentic, and beautiful they are as a musical entity.
My most favorite band of all time. Though I miss them, I'm glad they chose not to stick around long enough to become a parody of themselves.
Greg would be Tom Hardy if he was on the spectrum.
Tom Hardy seems like he’s on the spectrum too, though
tom hardy if he was perpetually baked
Saved to; “ How to break up with women” playlist
I miss my favorite band so much.
Damn. Love these guys. Sad to see them go, but at least we still have their amazing music. Their happiness and comfort matters more! ♥️
And the silver lining is, you’re spared the risk of ever, ever, ever hearing non-amazing music from them. Their musical legacy will forever be one of utter perfection
Ben was on the verge of tears the entire time and it breaks my fucking heart.
I give it 2 years, there are more stories to tell DEP for life.
Didn’t get to see them with Mike Patton in the band, but I did see them open for Mr. Bungle and I can still feel it. The first note made me jump back. Great show.
These guys are real artists-not just rock and rollers milking their success for every drop they can get out of it.
I just heard these of these guys, they are darn good, thanks for the music.
You are Amazing, Thank you for everything.
I miss this band.
Got to see these guys live at the original Furnace Fest in Birmingham Alabama and they absolutely blew my mind. One of the greatest live shows I’ve ever seen to date. God Speed fellas
Dude every time I see Greg, it's crazy to see how small he's gotten over the years.
lol
Onamorata he's probably on smaller doses of Vitamin T right now. Then again he's not 20 anymore, so maybe he doesn't want to juice as much
Roids
Onamorata - He sounds like Marilyn Manson when he talks. Took me a minute to think of who it sounded like. Kinda funny.
meshuggah18 - Meth. The real reason the band is through :D
This is awesome and hilarious saw u guys many times and yes u are without a doubt unique \mm/.
Im fortunate enough to have seen them live twice. Its mad sad to see them break up tho. Long Live the sound of DEP!!!
" This is Dikembe Mutombo from DEP" 😁
Love 'em and badly miss 'em, more and more as time goes by. Truly, unique as fuck!
Loved the last album,, miss them. Wouldn't mind hearing what happens next.
I will be forever thankful with these 2 mfs for writing Dissociation, one of my favorite albums ever. I just cant get enough of it and it may be one of the best last albums of any band. I love the rest of the albums but man Dissociation has such a unique ferocity and rawness
Lots of respect for this
*sad emoji* The most adrenalized show's came from you. Modern day, punk attitude, carnage. Forever insane. Stay berserk.
Esteban Vasquez for sure, but i think Death Grips killed them
It's like my parents divorcing. Again.
☹️
I’m sorry
@6:37 I was fortunate enough to be at one of the shows on the tail end of the "small club farewell" tour they did. It wasn't my first time seeing them but I knew it would almost 100% be the last time. Small room, Constellation Room in Santa Ana, CA. Show was incredible but there was a moment where it went from everyone in the room still being in shock that they were watching Dillinger for the last time, in a venue consistent with the size venue that they made their name in, to absolute chaos. The level of chaos you've heard about from past Dillinger shows. The Virgin Records show, the fire breathing show at Chain that got them banned, any show that had a balcony or tall stack of speakers for Ben to jump off of. It was all there. Ended in Billy's kit being demolished and people in the crowd on the stage for the last song with others crowd surfing on top of them. To me, it was the culmination of the points Ben talks about. It was the finale before the curtain call. There was another tour coming up as the true farewell tour, in much bigger venues ultimately ending in NY for multiple nights(?) (not shocked, big balcony there). I was at the Chain show that got them banned, and this show in the Constellation Room takes the cake for me. The best ending I could have asked for because it gave me the chance to see the band as the band intended. As an art piece that will live on forever and continue to inspire future generations to come
This band is just flat out good. So good
I wish there was a band that could fill the shoes of Dillinger but I'll just continue to listen to their catalogue forever
Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
Well there’s definitely room for someone to come up
Converge carries the torch nicely for extreme music still....
Converge had great moments but always seemed to push everything through a funnel of distortion to sound 'intense' - DEP didn't need that
I like their take. Most everything, including a band, is made special because at some point it will end. You value it more that way
hahaha great ending. thanks for the honest expression.
If I had never heard of them I'd still call this the very best "quits-statement" ever made
The disagreement in this interview is the obvious reason these dudes are breaking up. Favorite band and love them to death. Best of luck
I feel like there always was a tension between Ben and Greg, so I don't really know if its this
Where is the disagreement
I like how all images of them they look like an indie pop band then you hear their music
One might say they were 100% Percent Burnt...
They had a plan.. and they executed it. Nice!
When Good Bands Do Bad Things....
One of them was the killer, and the band didn't survive
The Dillinger Dismemberment Plan
WHAT????
I just heard this.
Forgive me. I've been locked up in a maximum security situation that dosent have a lot of music news.
😶🌫️
the plan has been fulfilled
is that quake 2 soundtrack in background?
Crazy to see them getting along considering how much ben dislikes greg. Wish things could have been different and we'd still be listening to new Dillinger music now
If monster and axe body spray had an interview.
You can tell they were both so fucking tired of interviews.
Ben sounds very mature in his decision-making progress here.
Please Sir, can I have some more.
I think that the live shows and on-stage energy are what carried DEP.... They have some great songs and I get the mathcore stuff, but holy what really separates them from the rest of metal in my opinion is the live show they put.... Its not just playing music but the raw emotion, energy, and spectacle of it all.
Some future band replicating DEP songwriting style will be whatever.... If DEP should inspire anything, it should be metal and rock acts acting like metal and rock acts on stage....
The scene will not die if we can get 2020 metal onwards to look like Furnace Fest '02 .... sick of these 'metal' acts just standing on stage playing their songs with basic emotions and calling it a night....
"Get the guac, go for it" 😂
This video is so fuckin HD
The plan worked.
the cake was great guys thanks. whoever did the design on the chocolate one though, looked like a giant middle finger, and not the Empire state building
Ben should be played by Cole Sprouse from Riverdale
Uncle Syrus It's weird that he's known from being on Riverdale and not The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
Jacob Lyons or Big Daddy or Friends
Greg looks like he had some lean before the interview
they were my childhood so glad they finally broke the jersey curse and escaped
Greg is one of the most attractive men I’ve ever seen in my life my god
8:57 lol wtf
What?
ken from succession
Greg Pitt! 🤟
good byeeeee
The Dillinger Ended Plan
No no no not today
these guys dont seem like they want to be friends
why why why >>???????????????????///
I still dont get it, why they broke up?
I think their music is too crazy to tour after a while, or after a certain age
When you can't perform at peak anymore..real bands call it quits so they can be remembered as no compromise. Slayer and Rush are in this category.
I have a dog named "Dog."
My budgies name is Gary.
Ben butchered lining up his beard on the left side
Dude shrunk
A reunion show with original vocalist
A second
A third
Calculating infinity is so very important not only to dep but music as a whole I am ok with a celebration of an important piece of art ....but if this turns into anything but a celebration i will boycott
I won't boycott, but I am very much with you on wanting this to be contained to celebrating CI
@@puredistraction I can respect that
Worrying about paying for extra guacamole is why they broke up.
One dislike. Who tf? Lol
im halfway through this interview, i'll believe what they say when they wait atleast 10 years to do a reunion tour. if they come back next year with a tour and album everything they've said up till this point about the breakup is a bullshit media scam. dont get me wrong i love dillinger escape plan, one of the best live bands ive ever seen! but i can name a large amount of bands that have broken up and reformed a year later just because they know they're gonna be washed up soon.
Tim Worley do you not know who DEP are? Gtfo muggle. Media scam?! They've been DEP for DECADES. You can't be DEP for decades. It's not a sustainable enterprise - with energy or personalities.
Still waiting for that tour
@@camerondoran9799 Any day now lol

Вейнман Мой любимый еврей! Я ползал по этим концертам как припиздок. Перевод сами мутите.

This is so stupid. Every time I watch it, it pisses me off. Will yall please cut the shit and make us some more music. Life sucks without new D.E.P. What I'm s'posed to do now??
Idk maybe respect the band’s decision and health and find someone else? It’s not like they don’t already have a hundred songs
was their music really that good though? listening wise no. Technical profficiency good. But hard to listen to. I think their popularity stemmed from their incredible live performances
No, there catalogue is 100 percent genuin3 and varied and uniquely there's, I still listen to them regularly and always will. My personal favorite album was Option Parlysis, banger after banger but there final album I think Greg blew it out the water, I love every era of this band mind you.
Such a dumb move. That band name is what people know, no one is going to care about their other projects.
I cared about Greg other stuff. Killer be Killed was great.
Going to see the Black Queen, the new venture of Puciato, next week. Their music and live energy is very good.
Sad, if only Ben realized he doesn't really need anyone to keep DEP alive. I can see why he 's over it. Greg is a soy boy now and Chris Penny is long gone. You don't need fire breathing live shows, never did. Best album "Irony is a Dead Scene." Never toured it.
Dimitry > Greg
