    We went back to Coles Bay and this time scouted out the other side of the bay looking back at the Hazards, a range of mountains we had explored on our previous visit.
    With the mountain range as a backdrop, the view was gorgeous, now all I needed to do was find some interesting foreground that helped tell the story and share a sense of what it was like being there.
    NIKON Z7 FIRST IMPRESSIONS
    Thanks to the guys at Camera Electronic lending me the Nikon Z7 for the trip.
    Check out the Nikon Z7 - www.cameraelec...
    Great that the LCD screen in the back tilts out making it easy to angle the screen when the camera is low to the ground, so I don’t have to crouch trying to view the screen.
    The screen is also big and bright, making composing the shot and checking for detail and focus easy. While the focusing is a little slower than the D850, is fine for my style of landscape photography. (With the latest 3.00 firmware update, the focus speed and accuracy in a range of situation has been improved.). I set the camera up so I can quickly punch in and check the image is in focus before I take the shot.
    I didn’t have a remote shutter (cable shutter), I instead I use the 2-second timer built into the camera, which is very easy it set up. I could see I was needing to bracket my shoot which can be quickly accessed through the menu.
    One of the best features of the Z7 is the weight, not just of the body but the lenses as well.
    SPOILER: I enjoyed the ended up buying a Nikon Z7 as my main Landscape Photography camera.

    Great to see mate! As you know I moved to the Z7 from my 850 before my trip overseas. Was the best decision I ever made, the ergonomics and light weight of the Z7 was a game changer and not once did I miss or wish I had my 850 for any shots.
    Best camera I’ve ever owned!

    I moved from Olympus 4/3 to the Z7 when the 14-30 f/4 lens with 82mm filter thread was announced. I shoot a lot of coastal photography with Nisi ND circular and square filters, and the 82mm thread makes it so easy and quick to fit. The quality of the Z7 is very good for landscape photography. I ended up buying a second Z7 to avoid changing lenses in the field, and to keep my sensors clean in coastal environments. The new f/4 Z lenses are superb being light weight and sharp.

    Just what I needed, a video of the outdoors. Fed up of seeing people making videos of them sat at home at the moment. I know it cant be helped but its tiring. Being from the UK tasmania is a bucket list location but it looks amazing. First image didn't sit well with me. Although the background was straight the angle of the foreground to the right at the edge of the water made it appear off balance. Love the colours though no denying it's a stunning location.

    Good to see you online Andrew and hope you and your family are doing ok. Images were fantastic and was wondering if you would move across from the D850 and then read your full episode description. Currently mulling over the jump to mirrorless and as a Canon shooter the EOS R5 is getting my attention, just waiting to see the full specs before deciding

      Thanks mate, it's great to be back on UA-cam. Thanks also for your kind comments about the images. I've been contemplating the move to the Nikon Z7 for a while and finally made the move a few months ago. I did a video about editing a seascape on a BenQ monitor a few months ago and that has in fact the first time I took the Z7 out for a shoot. The Canon EOS R5 does look interesting and I'm really happy that Canon users are going to have a mirrorless 45MB+ option for consideration.

    Hey Andrew. NIce video my friend. Tassie is quite a place for photography huh. These images form the Z7 - they have a different look and feel to your previous. Id be keen to know what you think of it. I thought you were shooring GFX50 for a short time too. Anyway, greetings form NZ. Take care Andrew. Keep up the content. Regards, Ewan

    Another fascinating vlog Andrew. I love that region of Tasmania and I think I'll have to pay it a visit next time down there. I'm glad to see you using the Z7. As you mentioned I love the light weight of the Z6 I use and the lenses are actually superb.

      Thanks Richard, I love creating these photography adventure videos. It so satisfying to see the process come together. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long before we can get out there again. Tassie is amazing, I'd love to spend some decent time there explore what it has to offer. Loving the Z7, great in the hand, can barely feel it in the backpack!

  • @grantking4681

    Andrew, having used the Z7, is it now on your 'list of acquisitions' - noting your mention at the end of the video at the 'lighter pack' and the 'sort of setup that you want to have in the future' - or are you sticking with the D850? It suggests you're a little further down the track of going mirrorless than you may have been before the Tassie trip. I'm yet to have a play with a Z7 but my thinking now is, as a (largely) landscape photographer, stick with the DSLR (currently have a D810 so move up to a D850 or perhaps its replacement) or move into the mirrorless world with either the Z7 or maybe even its updated model (Z8/Z9?). Love the pics too.

    Very much enjoyed this video. Tasmania is such a wonderful place. I spent 2 weeks there a couple of years ago. You showed me some places I have to go back and see. Andrew, I'm sitting on the fence right now. Can't decide between the Z7 and the Fuji GFX 50R. I know you also enjoyed the 50R when you used it. If migrating to to Nikon or Fuji GFX for the first time, would you prefer the Z7 or the GFX 50R? Does the lighter weight of the Z7 trump the 50 R's image quality? I'd really appreciate hearing your impressions. Thanks very much.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Conrad, I agree Tassie is amazing. It's a tricky decision to make. I've used both cameras and in the end I went with the Nikon Z7. Not just that the weight trumps the slight increase in image quality but the price is much easier on the wallet. I'd go the 50R over the 50S though. I was also frustrated with the lack of lens for the GFX, with the Nikon I can always use the FTZ and lean on legacy lenses. Hope that helps! :)

    Thank you for your camera videos! Have you experienced a difference in colour between Fuji and Nikon cameras (when shooting RAW)? I read some statements (Ken Rockwell, Christopher Frost, ...) that the Fuji colours aren't good for landscape photography ... could this be true in some cases?

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  4 роки тому +1

      I don't thin this is true. When shooting RAW you have so much control of the colour in post, that a slight difference just doesn't matter!

    • @stevelink21
      @stevelink21 4 роки тому +1

      HI Patrick. Not sure I agree with that statement about Fuji colors not being landscape-friendly either. I've used several Fuji bodies for landscapes (X-T3, X-T1, X-Pro 2), and I found the color science for landscapes to be quite good, and requiring little modification, unless one is going for a certain "look". That said, I'm also researching the Nikon Z7 System, only because I recently started printing large, and I think I'd obtain even better sharpness and detail retention in large (30x40") prints with a FF System....not that there's anything wrong with the Fuji files at all.

    • @patrick.771
      @patrick.771 4 роки тому

      @@stevelink21 Hi Steve,
      thank you for your input.
      I bought a X-H1 some weeks ago to try the Fuji system and have to say that I'm happy so far (except the loud noise the IBIS makes all the time).
      Haven't had the opportunity to try the camera on my typical hiking tours but the photos I made in the forest and around my home look very good. I edit in Capture One and I'm surprised how little I have to edit the photos. Even the JPEGs look excellent - in some cases even better because the camera processes areas better where there are leaves in front of a bright background (haven't found the reason yet why RAWs don't handle it so well in C1).
      The green tones in the RAWs look very okay but compared to Nikon files I like the Nikon's a bit more (Fuji looks a bit more "painted").

  • @stevelink21
    @stevelink21 4 роки тому

    Excellent video and images, Andrew! May I ask where your focus point is located in the scene, since you bracketed your exposures? Did you use hyperfocal distance, for this lens at f/11, or did you focus on foreground in one image and background in the other, and merge in post?
    Thank you sir!

  • @Luigi13
    @Luigi13 3 роки тому

    Andrew Marr, do you still own the D-850? I purchased a used Z7 with the 24-70 and I found that in low light didn't focus as well as my D-810. And using the FTZ adapter with my other Nikon lenses didn't cooperate that well it was slower. I finally returned it and I am actually looking to buy the D-850 regardless of weight. I rather have a tool that works perfectly especially in the autofocus area and battery performance than just weight, and has two card slots. I see that the Z7 prices are going down while the D-850 is actually still selling more like when it was introduced and the performance of the camera has built confidence in a lot of photographers. What is your view? Cheers.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  3 роки тому

      Hi Gino, yes I still own the D850 and Z7. I haven't had a chance to play with the new Z7ii but the focus is meant to be quick with the two processes. I've also seen the prices of the D850 come down ($500US off I believe). Not sure if that's a permanent reduction.

    • @Luigi13
      @Luigi13 3 роки тому

      @@Andrew_marr This price reduction gave ,e the boost to purchase it and I see a clear difference from my trusted D810. Cheers.
