    I really appreciate your fair assessment on the Nikon Z series. I own a Z6 and the negative feedback on this camera system has always been unfair to me.

      Real photographers who focus on the pictures they create use the system to their benefit and understand the process. The negative reviews come from the internet and youtube reviewers who make money on click baits and responses to ther epost, they don't care anything about the practical reality. They read spec sheets.

      Nikon cameras just feel great in the hand. Picked up a Z6 in a store, haven't felt something so comfortable before. Everything feels right.
      I'm still not able to go full frame yet, but I'm looking forward to options when the Z6iii or Z7iii comes out. As a hybrid shooter, I just need 10 bit 420/422 internal so I hope they'll be able to do it in future.

      The only issue the 1st gen Zs have that affects most people is the focus isn't quite as good as it is on the latest Canons or Sonys, but a good photographer knows how to get the best out of their camera. Wildlife and sports are perfectly possible if you use them properly. I just love the ergonomics, colours and stellar glass that goes with the Z system.

    Always refreshing to see your reviews and thoughts on cameras, because unlike clickbait UA-camrs, you know that using a camera is about the 500 little things that aren't outlined in the top lines of the spec sheet (like controls, grip, colors, menu options, and lenses).

      Yeah, I'm afraid the a7IV get an articulating screen. If so and if Nikon survives, this alone is worthy changing system. When the a7III is not to get anymore, I guess I'll go to Nikon, if they're still with us and kept the flip screen.

    • @cotswoldphotographers
      @cotswoldphotographers 3 роки тому +1

      Øyvind Holmstad yes it’s certainly a good enough reason for me to move as well. It’s only come about from peer pressure from content creators rather than photographers. IMO there are very few reasons for a majority of photographers and or videographers to need an articulating screen, if anything they get in the way. If the only reason you want a screen like that then buy into a system that offers it rather then forcing manufacturers to include it on all cameras. Personally I think fugi totally spoilt the XT4 when what they had on the XT3 was perfect in my mind. I’m so glad that Nikon haven’t succumbed yet although it’s only a matter of time. In the meantime I’m going to enjoy many more years with the current offerings.

    Well. I just pulled the trigger on a Z7 kit. A good time to hunt now that the 2nd gen is long out, the Z9 is in peoples hands, and a Z8 seems to be inevitable fairly soon. I forwent the primes and opted for just the Z 24-70/4 for a native starter - from all I've seen it really is one of the most special "kit" lenses ever released..... Nikon Z has an unusual strength: great performance in the corners with M-mount lenses due to a thin filter stack on the sensor and a large mount size, which yields much better performance than any Sony cameras. Many Leica rangefinder users buy the SL2, specifically to use the M-mount lenses with focus peaking. The SL2 has a special filter to enable maximum performance for M-mount lenses. The Z cameras perform quite similarly to SL2 in this regard and are much cheaper. What’s the big deal with M-mount lenses? I can fit a trio of super fast Voigtlander 21 F1.4, 40 F1.2, 75 F1.5 on top of my palm, they are tiny. A trio of them is smaller than a single Sigma 40 F1.2. Modern Voigtlander m-mount lenses are optically very good in actual use, at reasonable price. And there are bargain lenses from TTartisan and 7artisan, some which perform really well optically, some which offer unique artistic look. No autofocus? With a Megadap MTZ11 adapter, autofocus is possible with all manual focus lenses. Yes, it’s not as fast as the native lenses, but new adapters keep coming up. At a point, the benefit of size/weight will outshine the absolute focusing speed. Also, the short flange distance of the Z cameras allow adapting to most lenses from other brands.

  • @andgainingspeed
    @andgainingspeed 3 роки тому +1

    I agree that Nikon did well to release a good number of primes at F1.8 rather than take the route Sony and Canon went with when they were launching their native ML lenses. Used, the Z7 can be had for less than $2K. Firmware updates have made the AF more competitive.

    Excellent points about the Nikon Z7, Mattias! As a landscape and product photographer, I'm quite pleased with the level of sharpness and detail I get from this camera, combined with the stellar Nikkor S lenses! That said, have you experienced the "known issue" of rubber disintegration" at the Function buttons by the lens Mount? In September I bought an "E+" rated used Z7 from a large camera store in NYC. It was pristine. Then, a few weeks ago I noticed that the rubber around the Function buttons starting to flake off a bit. I was concerned that if it got worse, it could potentially deposit tiny bits of rubber into the sensor area. So, I am exchanging it for a "newer" Z7 with only 15 shutter actuations. As I was told that this occurred in a relatively small number of "Older" bodies, I'm hoping that Nikon addressed the issue between the two bodies' manufacture! Thanks you sir, and Be Safe! Steve

    I couldn't give a monkeys about there only being one card slot either. I have a D700 and a D90, both with one card slot and both are excellent camera's. I always felt that Nikon ever so slightly rushed the Z series into production to stop themselves falling too far behind Sony and Canon to be able to catch up. The Z6 II and Z7 II are definitely a step in the right direction, but the first gen camera's will always be marmite camera's, loved and hated in equal measure by folk from across the photography community. Would I have one? Hell yeah!

    • @darylnd
      @darylnd 3 роки тому

      Change "camera's" (possessive) to "cameras" (plural) and I'm in complete agreement with you. One card slot? I bought my Z7 while my Sony a9 was in for warranty repair. The Sony's behavior became increasingly erratic, at one point corrupting *both* cards simultaneously, before dying entirely: fortunately, I only lost some test shots I made while experimenting at home with lighting setups. Nikon had such a deal on the Z7 kit (including 24-70mm lens and FTZ adapter) that I considered it a cheap rental while the Sony was in shop, and I figured to sell the one I liked least: I'd spent a month in SE Asia with the Sony and found it uncomfortable in the hand. The salesman, knowing I enjoy macro photography, loaned me his personal 105mm Micro-Nikkor to try with the FTZ adapter: it worked perfectly! I ended up trading the Sony for a surplus Leica M10 (Only one card slot! Anguish!!) _Betriebskamera_ (factory demonstrator/R&D unit) and a 1979-manufactured Leitz Canada 50mm f/2 Summicron-M, which is the combo I wear every day and everywhere.

    @dct124 3 роки тому

    Liked all your points especially the LCD screen. I think Fuji has the best around but I don't personally like the fully articulating screens and glad they keep it on the lower end models.
    As I've been shooting more and more at night using my Df I realized I don't actually need the high low light capabilities and that 3200 is about all I need, maybe 6400 to stop motion.
    So I was thinking about the IBIS and shooting at f2.8 in LV0, LV1 conditions or under moonlight in a dark parking light as a visual.
    It's become habit for me to zero out my camera at night, just building up memory for calculations in my head. Especially as I get older, I'm preparing for memory loss as early as 35yrs so I have something in place now vs later. I also am preparing for pilot's school and bar tending.
    So to the point.
    Zeroing out my camera settings for LV0 or LV1 conditions.
    LV measure means no matter where I am in the world, who ever is reading my scenario knows what my environment looks like.
    f1 (f1.2), iso 100, 1s
    I like shooting at 50mm (40mm especially) but other focal lengths too like 105mm.
    I hate tripods and monopods but for sports they are a must.
    The point converting the EV from earlier with a f2.8 lens and still being able to stabilize the lens for LV0, LV1 you need 5 to 7 stops of IBIS.
    f1.2 to f2.8 is 2 full stops (no f1 lenses and the .95 Noct is overkill and I can't afford it to make profit)
    5 -2stops of IBIS = f2.8 or +3 stops of IBIS remaining.
    I use the focal length rule so I just count from 1s in full stops to get y focal length.
    1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/25
    Which lands me on 1/8 or 8mm roughly. That's too wide for my taste.
    Off to iso performance. I don't mind 24mm which only 2 more stops away (from iso100).
    100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200
    ISO 400 it is then.
    f2.8, iso 400, 1/25, 24mm should capture LV1 conditions with no noise, and stabilized. Even if I needed more speed the Z7 can shoot cleanly up to ISO 800 with no noise correction and that would double to 1/50.
    Then I got thinking if I got a 24mm VR lens that would give me 7stops of IBIS.
    4s, f2.8, iso100 (this is also LV1 EV)
    Anything beyond 1s I hate hand holding. Simply b/c that's my boredom benchmark unless it's a slow pan or something.
    In the 7stop scenario gotta count back 5stops.
    4, 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4
    I got 1/4s and I'm not using a 4mm lens even if one existed.
    1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/25
    100, 200, 400, 800
    Cool I can deal with iso800
    f2.8, iso800, 1/25 at 24mm VR
    This is just theoretical. I gotta figure out if Nikon has 7stops of IBIS using a 24mm f2.8 lens with VR. Regardless the Z7 still has 2stops more I'm perfectly fine using without NR (3200).
    Final reason is being able to crop up to 400%
    24mm
    x1.2 52mm
    x1.5 60mm
    x2 72mm
    x3 96mm
    x4 120mm
    For me at least I definitely see why the Z7 cost more than the Z6 and it has better low light natively without cropping tricks.
    So with that, that leads me back to the Z50. Man if that little guy had IBIS OMFG and when I owned one it was really good in low light. The bonus was that it's more balanced than the Z6/Z7 so technically you shouldn't need IBIS beyond what that kit lens provides however it's not f2.8 and here in lies an issue that caused me to return it among others. f2.8 to f3.5 is 2/3 less light and a bit more DOF. I'm not opposed to shooting f4 at night but you gotta really be looking for LV4 and above conditions.
    Anyone getting this far you typically need and f2 lens in LV2, f4 lens in LV4 works and so on.
    EV0 is 5 on the 10stop scale so count down to zero (1/3 increments) and you get EV0 or -1.7EV (exp. Comp).
    The Z50 just complicates my mental math.

    Hi Mattias, I'm on the verge of switching camera system from a Fuji X-T2 to either a full frame Canon RF camera or a Z Nikon. I'm looking at either the RP/R or the Z5/Z6. I'm really torn between the two solutions as they both have some strengths and weaknesses. I could put my hands on a Z6 with a 24-70 F4 and later on add a 35 1.8 and an 85 1.8 (I could even consider going for the Viltrox 85 here). On the Canon side I should "downgrade" to the 24-105 f4-f7.1 to match the Nikon entry price but then get the 35 and 85 for cheaper compared to the Nikon equivalent options. As I mentioned, both systems are closely matched in their value proposition. Since you have experience with both, where would you put your money if you were to invest in these two brands? I don't do videos I might add, both systems would serve as a travel, family/portrait/pet, occasional landscape options. At the moment I'm not considering sticking with the Fuji system as I consider it too pricey for what it is.
