The workers are Dutch, and the trees are Elm, so I’m going to make a guess and say they are trying to stop the spread of Dutch Elm disease in the area?
@Lou DeVon Sorry, but that elm disease is named Dutch only because it was studied in that country. And those are not elms: they seem to be Tilia.

If you are using an extra machine to hold it and then lay it down why not just cut it straight....... The longer you take the more expensive it gets for the clients....

Why are they being removed
They were too big and the houses weren't getting enough light. I believe new trees were planted to replace them.
The trees had a disease which killed the trees all across the country. Unfortunately, they all had to come down as they had no chance to survive. New species resistant to that disease were planted afterwards.

+alberto muceli They reached too high and were too big, homes were in dark all day long. People complained for good reasons. There was no -or hardly any- sunlight, just dark and shade -that's no fun. The city is currently busy, doing a great job replacing the trees.

Because ... sometimes that is the right thing to do! We're not all treehuggers. Bewoners zaten een groot deel van de dag in het donker, dan is het kappen van die bomentroep vlak voor de deur de enige logische optie.

Aan het kernhout van de afgezaagde bomen te zien waren ze ook al aardig ziek, dus was er een goede reden om deze bomen te rooien.

Om mensen als jij iets te geven om over te zagen ... en nu hop, naar de tuin je boom gaan knuffelen!
Omdat zelfs een leek kan zien dat die bomen rot waren van binnen. Oftewel Iepenziekte. Waar ben je dan als er een tak of boom op je auto, huis ect. valt? Zelf meegemaakt dat er een tak boven op onze auto viel mede dankzij achterstallig onderhoud van de gemeente destijds. Soms is het beter om de bomen preventief te kappen, om er andere bomen voor in de plaats te zetten. Je hebt ook de Kastanje ziekte, dat houdt in dat de Kastanjeboom van binnenuit doorrot, met alle gevolgen van dien.

Geht nunmal nicht anders. Wenn man Bäume in der Stadt haben will, muss man die regelmäßig fällen, da die sonst zu groß werden. Alternative wären kahle Grünstreifen. Die Bäume werden anschließend neu gepflanzt.
außerdem drücken die Wurzeln irgendwann den Asphalt oder das Pflaster nach oben wodurch Stolperkanten oder andere Gefahrenquellen entstehen
