The wrong Words is what kept Hawaiians going to fight for their ppl. Message you’re trying to send Is to give up but because it iz that song Send a positive message to keep moving forward and keep fighting you’re lucky he change the lyrics because the song wouldn’t be as famous as it is today thank you for writing such a classic
Not quite, the message speaks that if nothing was done by the Hawaiians then it fits because they would take it like they did here "Then bid goodbye Hawaii," speaks to each Kanaka to NOT give up1
Mahalo Uncle Kawika ...for writing this beautiful and touching song. And for shedding light on the lyrics. The song's message is signifincantly better and makes more sense than the mistaken lyrics. I'm gonna share this with everyone I know! Mahalo nui loa.
Thank you for reviving the true lyrics for this very special song. I remember it vividly while living in Hawai'i but lost touch with it until a few years ago when I heard it on UA-cam. Very special song with strong connection to the islands. Mahalo !
This is truly one of the best songs ever written as far as I'm concerned, and I'm not saying that lightly. Very hard to listen to without getting choked up. The original lyrics seem to work better and it's too bad they were almost lost in the shuffle, although I also think it's cool how "Israel's version" flips that line to be almost hopeful. Also, Kawika, I really respect how you approached this. So many people would have been bitter or angry in their way of explaining how their lyric has been misinterpreted. I know that has to be a deeply personal thing to see your intent lost through the popularized version of the song. However, you come across as very humble and understanding of how that came to be.
I love to now know the history of this song. The spirit it contains is even revealed in the story behind it's evolution. Like the land, not one can own this song. It comes from somewhere bigger than us. The ownership of the land and this song hold the beautiful mystery of our existence here. If we allow one to be owner and decision maker of this song, it's spirit will be gone. Same with the land. It's life can only continue in righteousness. Covering the land will man's individual "ownership" and selfish desire is killing the life. Thank you Dave for being transparent and real. You have carefully preserved the story and it's amazing value. I admire your part in it. Mahalo Nui Loa God Bless You
Tell Mickey Ioane that, who has been living off Hawaii78 royalties from Mountain Apple company, this song who 3 other people help write and not once did Mickey Ioane reach out and offer them anything, nada! I had a chance to meet him and I hoped to interview him as Frank Feary, Mackey's brother introduced me to him, he blew me off like I was the plague. A little fact, Mickey only wrote 1 verse to this song... so your statement of "If we allow one owner and decision maker of this song" I am sorry to tell you, has already come to pass, his name is Dickey, sorry I mean Mickey.........Ioane BODA - KFH

When Mickey the Dickey gets to the other side and meets his maker, there will be an account made. Standing there with all he has. "How would they feel, would they smile, be content or just cry? Cry for the gods, cry for the people, cry for the land that was taken ALL away, and then BID GOODBYE Hawai'i." Wow, the message is significantly different by those few altered words! Warren
So moving, truly one of the most spiritual songs i've ever heard. You really do feel those ancestors feelings, their tears, crying for their people. 💛🙌
I am so glad I clicked on this. I love the song either way, but good to know that there were other original words. I like them better. This song and the sadness of the meaning just plays over and over in my head. God bless Hawai'i. One day it will be ok.
Now l can do my painting of my favorite song in the world...now it makes sense....mahalo nui loa...there was a day when both lanes of Farrington would stop to let you out of Tamuras....glad l was able to experience that....now there are windwills in Waimea...l had to bid farewell to Hawai'i nei....but my heart will always be with the Hawaiians living homeless in their own land! When l finish my art...all money will go to help those who cannot pay 2 grand a month for a home....l will let you know braddah...you deserve to be involved! Aloha nui
Aloha Kawika, This song is one of the most touching songs I've heard that makes us think, from the perspective of our Ali'i... and how they would feel after seeing all the changes. Mahalo to you for this creation and also for the clarification. We want you to know that your music made a powerful impression all the way here in Chicago. Aloha, Kaleo and the girls of Makani
Thanks for bringing forward the history of this amazing song and for the brilliant rendition. I feel both the original and the "incorrect" versions make sense in their own way - the original version presents the reality of how things have changed, the "incorrect" version shows the resilience of the islands and their people.
This IS the true story behind the song, "Hawaii 78", recently waxed by the late "Bro IZ". A great Hawaiian "Sovereignty" Song of the sad degeneration of the Hawaiian Islands through-out the many generations since the Monarchy!
Lovely Kawika... I get so emotional hearing even this version... mahalo nui for shareing with us, and no worries brah your voice comes from the heart and from Akua, just lovely.. ♥♥♥
hilokama0601...please accept my apologies...i took your question as an insult...my bad...i really have no idea if i am related to him...but he was a con artist, and i just thought you were equating me with him...really sorry...much mahalos for your support on the campaign...aloha, kawiks

Give the land back to the people.... please.
And then bid "good bye" Hawai'i. Changes the attitude and demeanor of this song. Wow! Bid Good Bye Hawai'i, hits right in da guts!

@@Matthew2ube Well said You got to be Hawaiian....
This is more than just a song. It is the most profound question presented to all of us about the changes in Hawai'i.
Not sure how I got here but I'm glad I did. Knowing the right and original lyrics from the artist himself is the only way to go. Mahalo.and Aloha
