I replaces the transmission of my automatic tj99 with a manual (I bought a destroyed tj97), but I did not have to replace PCM. The original PCM of my automatic 99tj worked fine. Thanks for your help and I look forward to your part II.
did you have to buy any extra parts and did everything bolt on ok? I'm asking because I recently found a 98 4.0 manual for parts that I want to put in my Automatic.
I’m just starting on down this pathway. Picking up a low mileage nsg370 this weekend. I see you say you didn’t replace any wiring harnesses. Do your have a check engine light? What did you do with the extra PCM connector considering the manual pcm is a 3 plug vs the 4 plug auto?
I plan to swap my tj's auto out. I'm hoping to skip the PCM swap, hopefully shorting the park switch to ground will get me going. In the future I would like to eliminate the PCM entirely, that will require some more research on my part. I could not find part two, did you post it yet? I would really like to see it.
Were you ever able to make your auto PCM work? I'm doing a Auto swap and my computer's programmed with HP tuners. I believe there is wire changes that can be made to allow the auto PCM to work. Let me know
Is it not possible to just use a NV3550 bell housing on a AX15 and avoid the aftermarket bell housing from advance adaptors that cost $500 plus dollars?
You mention buying a bell housing or bell housing adapter for the AX15. I'm swapping a NSG370 from an 06 into my 04 Rubicon. It has a built in bell housing so I assume I'll just plug into the crank sensor from the NSG370 that will work with the flywheel.
I got a 1991 wrangler 4.0 5 speed trans I replaced the clutch and...well the clutch line won't connect to the slave cylinder....bought it through autozone...they probably have me a clutch kit for a 2001...
I have a 1997 Wrangler that was a 5 speed AX5, I have everything still in it except the transmission itself. I have a 2001 Wrangler with an auto transmission that is going bad. What parts can I use from the ‘97 if I were to install an AX15 in it?
i have never had an issue with the actual trans itself, just the damned pcm. I purchased a pcm from the jeep dealer for 1200$ installed and havent had an issue yet. I love my jeep and it has no issue with 33s and 4.88s. Sits at about 2500 rpms at 70-75 with plenty of power in OD. With the 4.88s it doesnt surge and hunt for gears. im willing to bet you have 3.73s and large tires and didnt regear. That will destroy the trans unless you drive it as a 3 speed turning off the OD each time. I am in the process of converting mine just because I want a manual and love my jeep. Plus winter is coming and i need a project. lol
I actually have had 4.56 for a while the second brand new 42rle I had burnt up after 4 months of use I’ve already started on the manual swap I have everything I need already Just have to get the PCM figured out . I got one from a 2006 same year as mine that rolled two days ago. I literally pulled it the morning it rolled into the pull a part. It isn’t skim so I’m hoping I can just plug and play with my ax15 with the Novak bell housing.
I also have wished mine was a manual ever since I have had it !!! And it’s a project for me I was forced to buy a car because I was still paying off the loan for the transmission I didn’t even bother with a warranty sincerely I am not that fond of the auto anyways!
Had to be a shit company rebuilding that trans. Seriously! Most people that put 4.56 in the 42rle wish they had went with the 4.88s. with the 4.88s that trans is a beast. Also I do have a external trans cooler on mine. It's the 350$ one that has its own electric fan. PCM thing isn't to much of a problem. I was told you can still use the auto PCM but it will just throw codes. If you have a non skim car and put in a non skim PCM you will be fine. It will eventually throw a code if you don't go to the dealer and pay the 100$ to get the VIN and mileage updated on the PCM.
So as long as I have the PCM I will be able to drive it ? I have also heard about using the auto computer but you have to have the range selector plugged in and stuck in either park or neutral
I bought a 01 that has a auto to manual swap done. The reverse lights don’t work. I haven’t looked into it yet. Is it the same switch and plug for both transmissions?

My original TCM/PCM was rebuilt to no avail. The Dodge dealership, where my TJ sat for more than two months, offered me $10K on a trade in for a Toyota Tacoma.....I took it. Very disappointed with the number of solid Wranglers still in solid working condition, but computer or wiring problems plague them all.
I got a question do you have to change all the wiring becauseI did the same thing to my Jeep but I can’t get it to start it just cranks but it doesn’t start
No wiring stays the same. Check the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch). Also check if you have the SKIM light showing up. If the SKIM light shows up..you need to disable skim
hey Jersey Devil any chance we could exchange emails somehow. I would like to pick your brain a little. I have a 06 LJ with what I think is the dreaded bad PCM issues with hard 2nd gear shifts. I initially wanted a manual but couldn't find the right color combination so I settled on a auto. Kinda got screwed on that decision. Anyway I have questions I wonder you could help me with.
Chase Frazee, a lot of people like me like to "row their own boat". I personally cant stand the kickdown timing of the RLE47 transmission. It is also important to note that the shift points are thrown off when putting on larger tires or changing axle gear ratios.
I have begun collecting parts for this swap. Lucky for me I have a guy in town who parts out wrecked jeeps. I am getting all the parts I need from a 05 manual and the trans I am going to use is the ax15. I have the dreaded 42rle in my 06. it has the computer issue where it gets stuck in 2nd gear until i reset the pcm. I have rebuilt the trans, and now they want 1200$ for the pcm. Its a total scam! Any pointers would be awesome man. I have a NON skim 06 auto 4.0. I can get all of the swap parts with the pcm for 1500$ From what i see in your video I need the o5-06 manual flywheel, and it will bolt to the advanced adapter bell and the ax15 or nv3550?
The key is to match the PCM/Flywheel/Crank sensor. The PCM is expecting to see the same crank sensor (they changed from older TJs), and the crank sensor is looking for the correct clocking on the flywheel. I'd advise not doing the HESCO CPK as mine had some deflection under high load (highway) and would throw codes as the sensor slightly backed off of the sensor ring. I got lucky and got a SKIM PCM for $100 on a forum, sent it to HotWireAuto (jeep shop) and had them reset the PCM so it had no SKIM. Also there is a stupid rubber boot on the tub that is pricey but not 100% worth it.
im getting a pcm from a 2006 manual, and a flywheel from a 2006 manual. Same vehicle. Mine is a 06 so it should use the same cps. Correct? Im buying the advanced adapters bell like you used.
guy at the jeep dealer told me I can use the ECM from the auto if i really want to save some money, but it will just throw codes thinking the auto trans has failed. Sound legit?
There was a few changes to the PCM, and OPDA setups over the TJ/LJ years. if i remember...97-2002 should be same, 02-04 same and 05-06 same. 05-06 is CAN-BUS with a different style crank position sensor which means different tone ring and different setup, but the concepts are the same just need to track down your part number. Check Advanced Adapters.
Jersey Devil I need to know if now I have to change the PMC to manual PMC? I have ax15 on the car now, the car is running with the auto PMC, but the power isn’t as supposed to be. As I saw your video, I plan to get Manual PMC & ax15 housing. What do you recommend for me? I need to know where to get the right parts, i mean the housing? I can texting you if you’re okay with that.
I am working on this conversion right now! just to clarify Jersey Devil, I can keep the 42rle harness and just tuck it up or remove it and don't need another harness just the pcm from a manual?
yes mike. Hotwire auto has also told me they can try to reprogram my 42rle pcm to think it is a manual pcm. They charge 100$ for this but do not guarantee it will work. Hes pretty sure it will, but no one has attempted this yet. I happened to find a 2005 pcm that HAS skim and he charges 250$ to remove skim from the pcm.
This is great news ... I have everything for the swap already even the manual PCM however I tried mocking it up and making sure it works I get no crank.... the dash and gauges work the fuel pump primes all I hear is a click from the glove compartment and the radio turns off and back on ... brand new electrical starting system and the starter doesn’t even turn the engine...
Im not too familiar with the YJ electronics (the main issue with these swaps) but it should be a ton easier. I think the TCM was separate from the PCM in pre-2005 Jeeps so it shouldn't be much of an issue. You most probably only need is the correct skidplate, pedals, trans, driveshafts and you should be ok. You might run into an issue with the Park sensor but it can be defeated. You may end up like me and have no neutral safety switch but that isn't much of a hassle. Relocating the crank position sensor to the harmonic balancer using a Hesco kit may work as well for you but it didn't take very well for me.
Tough call as I ended up upgrading along the way as well as had some "failed" methods. Trans was a custom one and was 1800, skid was 350ish, PCM was 100, etc. I think total in I was in less than 3k.
