    This is the long anticipated Cathay Pacific First Class Review !
    I have been flying Cathay for almost a decade now and First Class is the last cabin for me to unlock :)
    On June,9th,2018, I was flying from New York JFK to Hong Kong via Vancouver on Cathay Pacific’s flight CX889. This is one of the four flights between JFK and Hong Kong operated by Cathay, it has a stopover at Vancouver to refuel and to load more passengers. This flight is also one of the six fifth freedom flights that Cathay offers (TPE-NRT, TPE-ICN, TPE-NGO, TPE-KIX, BKK-SIN,JFK-YVR) The reason I chose this flight is for its unbeatable departure and arrival time (leaving JFK @0955PM and arriving HKG @0710AM). I have integrated narration in this video to provide comprehensive informations; however, please comment if you have questions and don’t forget that its free to like and subscribe !

    Now that seat is really something. Looks real cosy especially for a 21 hour flight, plenty of privacy for that long on a plane

    It’s totally amazing that one can do this at 40,000 feet! Years ago, I flew on a Lufthansa A321 from Stockholm, Sweden to Munich, Germany in business class. We got a full meal on that 2-hour flight. Very nice! I was with my father. We then connected to a Lufthansa A340 to Boston also business class. That was REALLY NICE!! I have also flown first-class a couple of times on an older Boeing 767. It obviously wasn’t like this but it was still very very nice! I enjoyed that very much!!

    It’s been 30 years since I flew San Francisco to Hong Kong first class on Cathay Pacific, in a 747-200, I believe. It wasn’t yet possible to fly nonstop so we too stopped in Vancouver. The seats then were conventional, no personal IFE’s, no beds, but it remains the most impeccable service I have ever seen on a plane. Maybe I will do it again, someday.

    I flew a RT business class from LAX to HKG and back to LAX on CX 747-400. Best flight I ever experienced. Fresh cooked rice over the pacific. Congee with dim sum for breakfast. 17 hours of non stop attention from flight attendants. Best I’ve ever experienced. I also been on JAL and AA. Can’t touch CX.

    I took a look at the fares out of interest, it was US$20k one way direct JFK-HKG on the random dates I chose or US$11k via YVR. The direct option is about $1,000 per hour so I’d be ordering a second caviar course too!

    To be honest, I would rather spend$ for a nice hotel & dine at fine dinning restaurant. First class cost is crazily high & most people I know only use points for upgrade. CX needs to focus on their service at other class too not just first or business.

    The downside of this flight 9 p.m. departure from JFK airport is it that you're faced with 45 minute connection time in Hong Kong if you're going to Manila on the first flight CX907. You're better off doing the 1:30 a.m. departure CX845 JFK and EWR CX899

    I threw 777 from Los Angeles to Hong Kong that took 16 hrs. They turned off all the lights about an hour in flight. We tried to get some lights by raising the shades but they immediately took it down. Other than 2 meal time and one hour before arrival, they will not let you have natural lights. This way they don't have to be bothered. Who needs to sleep 12 hrs? Same thing on the way back to Los Angeles but luckily it took only 12+ hrs.

      Thank you so much for your kind message ! Congratulations on your accomplishments and for purchasing a business class ticket. I am sure its going to be a fascinating experience for you. The time I spend at the airport greatly varies on the airline I am flying and the quality of the lounge. I would be more than happy to spend over 4 hours in Cathay's First Class Lounge but certainly much less if I am visiting a lounge in mainland China.

    I thought flagship first dining was ONLY for AA 3 cabin first class on their transcontinental flights and their 777-300ERs. any and not any oneWorld partner’s intercontinental first class. How does a Cathay first class ticket get you into flagship first dining at JFK?

    • @ShanghaiFlyer

      Cathay Pacific has an agreement with AA at JFK to allow their first class pax to Flagship Dining.

    Yes the CX First seat is very wide but width doesn't always mean comfortable. Sometimes, if a seat is too wide, you just slip and slide around in it (a problem with SQ's older premium class seats). A narrower and more form fitting seat may in fact be more comfortable. Also, I'm not feeling that cabin and seat colour scheme...seems sorta dark and plain. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed that long flight...transpac flights are soooo long.

    You say it’s the widest seat on any comercial 777. Do you know the actual width of these seats? Because SQ’s seats on the 777 are also quite wide.

    • @ShanghaiFlyer
      @ShanghaiFlyer  6 років тому

      Espen B Accoridng to SeatGuru, Cathay’s first class on the 777 is 36 inch wide while SQ’s first is 35 inch. SQ has very wide seats in first and business class but their legroom is very limited on some of the business class.

    • @ShanghaiFlyer
      @ShanghaiFlyer  6 років тому +1

      Although I am based at Shanghai, personally I would avoid flying China Eastern especially on international flights. China Eastern's business class hard product is solid, they operate 77W with a reverse herringbone between JFK-PVG; however, the service and catering is very disappointing. They apparently have the advantage of operating the only direct flight, but I would rather make a stopover somewhere else in order to have an enjoyable flight.

    Nice presentation, the music is way too loud in comparison to the voice commentary I think, I am adjusting my volume up and down from spoken comments to when the music is on.
