    I was surprised when my CFII told me how long it was before he knew how to use self-serve fuel. I just assumed that was taught as part of private pilot training. Are there any other things that I might show you how to do?

      Actually yeah, I'd like to learn how to do full service fuel. I've never done it so far and I have no idea how. I plan to mostly avoid it both to save cost and I just don't like the idea of trusting someone else to fill my plane, but I think there are some airports where that's the only option.

    • @flysport_tedder
      @flysport_tedder Рік тому +1

      @@cheapskateaviation I can think of two airports I've done it. One had a contracted full-serve rate that was cheaper than the "retail" self-serve rate. The other was because it was the only option. Generally I like going to smaller airports, so they don't have bougie services anyhow.

    I have “Check CO” as one of my last steps on my run up check list. I’ve found that my 235 usually hovers around 50ppm on run up with cabin heat on. This yields 0ppm in flight. It’s something everybody should pay attention to!

    Before I bought my Sentry ADS-B (w/built-in CO detector) a couple of years ago, I was using those "orange dot" card-style CO monitors. Thanks for sharing your experience, and glad that it turned out well for you. Guys and Gals are dropping $1000 on headsets, they can spend $150 on a life-saving device, and there are several CO detectors out there. As a matter-of-fact, one headset manufacturer is incorporating a CO detector into one of their latest models (no sales plug intended).

    One thing about the credit card machine I'd like to mention. They put a hold of $500 on your card, as you mention it was making sure you have enough for 50 gallons, it is doing so by putting the hold for 24 hours. I was in the same position as your CFI as I fly out of part 141 school so I asked and got shown, if you are using AVcard from your club/or plane then it wont matter so much however if you are using your own personal credit/debit card. It surprised me a lot the first time because I wanted to know where my money went then it got explained :D

    This is such a great video! My CFII had never fueled his own plane either and during training, we never had to do. Believe it or not, the first time I fueled my own plane was at the inaugural Midlife Pilot Fly-In in OBX. I had done enough research to know how to if I ever needed to, but I was equally surprised to learn my CFII did not know how to self-serve fuel.

    Thanks for the video. Regarding the "we" thing, I think its a pilot thing. I've always chuckled when I see solo pilots saying we on the radio. I'm not sure I've even ever heard someone say "I" on the radio. I guess it even transfers over to non-radio talking.
    BTW that was helpful for me even though I always do self-serve fuel. I've only ever filled up at 2 airports so far and their pumps look drastically different from the one you showed there. I would have definitely needed to stand there scratching my head for a bit to figure out how to do it.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Рік тому +2

      Yeah there were a couple of things along those lines that came to mind when I was editing the video. For example: why did that fuel pump already know my tail number?
      Answer: because there are tons of fuel pump credit card thingies that are all linked, and they recognize my credit card number. The VERY first time I used this fuel pump, it knew my tail number because this type is linked.
      And I could have mentioned that not all fuel pumps have eletric hose reels. And many have a different on/off switch.
      I didn't think of this when I was filming and kinda thought it would change the focus of the video a bit. Maybe I should have put something in there. 🤷‍♀

    You never mentioned the metal "full tabs" in the wing tank necks. Indicates 18 gal / wing tank level vs 25 gallons capacity when full to top of tank. Only filling to 36 gallon level helps with your forward C of G when carrying heavy passengers out of short or high density altitude airfield. I own a 1972 PA28-140E .

    Another great video as usual! I actually didn’t know you didn’t have to know the exact amount. Usually I do fill up but I encountered an airport that didn’t have a full up option and proceeded to go back and dip the tanks to calculate the fuel needed. I thought it charged you for how many gallons you put into the computer. That is good info to know! Another thing I learned is if you don’t turn that pump on fast enough it shuts off and you have to start over again

    I'm considering completing my PPL training in a Cherokee 140. All of my training thus far has been in a 172. The short answer why is possibly changing flight schools. I remember you transitioned as well from some high wing (172?) to a low wing (Cherokee?). At this point I'm done with all my required hours and have to finish cleaning up maneuvers as well as brushing up from not flying since November. In your case how many hours do you think was taken up by the transition?
    Thanks and God bless. ~Russ

    0:38 everyone says "we" on the radio, it's funny.
    7:20 admit it, how many times do you "time out" the card reader before getting the pumping going? I've gotten better, only about 1/3rd of the time.
    I put the sump cup on my seat. That way I can wait as long as possible after refueling yet I'm not going to start without sumping. That might be more difficult with a monodoor, especially with a passenger, do you have a habit?
