  • I'm about to head off to Nashville to visit with some friends for the @MidlifePilotPodcast Flyin. So I need to go get some landing practice in before I embarrass myself in front of them.

    Feedback is always appreciated! If any of you see *ANYTHING* that I'm doing that could be corrected, I would much rather hear it than not. However, I would appreciate if you would be kind in your delivery. Personally I think kind comments should be the norm on UA-cam. Let's see if we can make that happen!
    Critiquing my own landings:
    00:59 Landing 1: Centerline was good. Touchdown was soft. I still had airspeed to burn to land in a stall. Flat.
    02:01 Landing 2: All over the place. But managed to land with stall warning on. A little firm on the touchdown. Right of centerline.
    03:02 Landing 3: Soft touchdown. Nice centerline. Had a little airspeed to burn. Bounce. Not as good on video as it felt in the airplane.
    03:50 Landing 4: Too low on the approach. Off centerline.
    04:45 Landing 5: Lot of airspeed to burn, partly because of 25° flaps. Good centerline. Still flat.
    05:35 Landing 6: Short Field. Close to perfect, but slightly off centerline.
    06:32 Power off 180 #1: Pretty good - despite my thinking it wasn't going to work
    07:55 Power off 180 #2: Pretty bad - put in flaps too early. Could have tried to go straight to the numbers
    09:11 Power off 180 #3: Pretty good - again my estimates weren't accurate
    11:03 Power off 180 #4: terrible. Had to put in power to not land in the grass.
    Overall conclusions:
    1) I'm landing with too much airspeed
    2) I still need to get the nose up
    3) Fixing the noseup should fix the airspeed.
    4) Despite all of that, these are more than good enough landings.

      Good landings and great summary. As a student pilot I learn from every landing I do.
      Recently did power off landing and first thing that CFI told me is pitch for glide speed and keep it that way - on your video was hard to see when the power was cut but from looks of it speed was high, what is best glide speed for PA28-235 (I only flew PA-140)?
      Other observation from your landings and my habit is never remove hand from power level for more then needed (flaps, a switch if need to).

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Місяць тому +1

      @@MateuszPerlak We use Best Glide = 95 mph. But during my commercial training, we found that I was much more consistent at the power off 180 at 100 mph.
      That said, I'm in the pattern at 110 ish mph. Pitching immediately to best glide actually involves a slight climb to slow the airplane down to 100 mph. And I think you're right that I didn't do that. So nice catch!
      I used to own a 140 before I had this airplane - check my video history. And the nose on this airplane is a lot heavier. I use both hands because one handed it's difficult to get the nose up in this airplane. In the 140 it was pretty easy one handed. Although I definitely should try the one handed thing again.
      Good luck on your private! You're learning in a great airplane. I loved my 140!

    I wouldn’t roast any of those landings! But I’ll critique your video production - man, that was a masterful intro. Really great. Short, witty, visually interesting, perfect amount of music, and attention-getting such that it pulls you right into the rest of the video!

    Might want to check the landing gear during preflight - there was a lot of grease on that flight!

    Nice, I wish I could hear your engine and/or see tach rpms you are turning. I put 50# of sand in rear cargo hold in my Cherokee 180 to grease landings for my commercial, I leave in there if me and only one person and it actually allows me to flare some. LOL

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Місяць тому +1

      The RPM is typically about 1500 on final. Sometimes less if I'm high and need to get down. And I turn down the engine a bit. But not entirely. You should be able to hear some of it. Especially when I'm on the go, or at 10:34 when I'm talking to the controller while I'm still climbing out.
      Interesting re: ballast. The main thing I see in my landings is that they're all flat. I wonder if that would help.

    • @CEllington
      @CEllington Місяць тому +2

      @@1dullgeek I found landing the 140 we both owned difficult to land on the mains without dropping the front, even with a little power, but it could be done. I found the 180 nearly impossible until I added some ballast, however I know I always have new things to learn in my technique. I'd assume the 235 is difficult as well. With a little power right on final I can get the nose up and keep it up, but I find it very difficult with two 'big' people in plane without the weight in the back.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Місяць тому +1

      @@CEllington I got pretty good at landing the 140. But this airplane the nose is noticeably heavier. I tend to use both hands to pull back on the yoke during flare. Also I had 772 landings in the 140. I only have 180 (and counting) in this airplane. I've got a long way to catch up.

    Those are some good landings. Landings are a perishable skill, that needs to be touched up on from time to time. Mine are not as good as it could be and I need Togo do some touch and goes myself.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Місяць тому +1

      IMHO these are acceptable landings. But there's lots of room for improvement. Mainly I think they're too flat. And I also think I'm carrying too much speed at touchdown rather than landing just as it stalls.
      And those two things are related. If I hold it off longer, I'll have to raise the nose and that will slow me down. Which will also reduce those little mini bounces that I have.
      100% agree that landing is a perishable skill. I went and looked in my logbook and my frequency of landings is decreasing by a lot per month. I haven't dedicated the time that I used to for pattern work.

      @joshsaviationadventures Місяць тому +1

      Yea I’ve gotten away from working on my landings and between that and I got glasses for the first time in my life, I’m stalling two foot off the ground. So your landings look awesome compared to mine. Mine right now are controlled crashes 😝

    I was going to roast you on never having the stall warning horn go off, then I noticed you have a light for that.😳
    In a perfect world, the perfect landing is made with a full stall at the exact time the main gear touches.
    No one ever really gets that. I'd say they were all safe and good though!👍

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Місяць тому

      Yes I know some Cessna pilots who bemoan the lack of the stall horn. And yes I agree re: stalling just at touchdown. I think not doing that is actually a cause of some of the things I want to change about my landings.
      Thanks for the gentle feedback!

    I thought they were all quite solid actually. #2 looked like the bounce was a result of flaring a bit high and then losing too much air speed and it plopped down but all in all, I'd be happy with all of those. I've found that in general my landings in the Cherokee are more flat than they were in the 172s. I think you did really well on this day even if you weren't thrilled with all of them.
