  • By her temperament, and her reassuring presence in the lives of her subjects, Queen Elizabeth II was the very model of a modern monarch. CBS News contributor Tina Brown, author of "The Palace Papers," talks with correspondent Mo Rocca about the Queen's mystique, and how Her Majesty evoked history and familiarity in a turbulent world.

Just a girl, then lifelong servant to her people, we miss her terribly already. Now may she have eternal peace and rest. May I share this quote from a pastor. It truly sums up Elizabeth thru and thru. ' Life is not a journey to the grave with the intent of arriving in a safe well preserved body. Rather it is sliding in to home base, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and wildly exclaiming - Wow! what a ride. ' Yes, just a girl, in the arms of angels now. Thankyou, Your Majesty.

Such words as "service" & "duty" have become mostly meaningless today, hopelessly old-fashioned, & something that belongs, rather laughingly now, to another era. Not so! Queen Elizabeth proved for 70 years how relevant these concepts are & remain---and how they must continue to be preserved & valued for all time to come. The western world, especially, needs to follow Elizabeth's sterling, unflagging belief in these concepts!

Reading some comments by people who can not understand why we mourn our Queen reveals that they do not understand her presence in our lives. I British and am 60 and have known no other leader because she was on the throne 10 years before I was born. She came to our school and to our hospital just as she did to many others. Her image was on our money and our stamps. The Armed forces swore an oath of loyalty to her. The Royal Navy ships had her name at the beginning HMS. Her face smiled down at us from the walls of class rooms, Army Barracks, Courts of law, police stations, Hospitals etc. Her face was everywhere from birth to death for 70 years. Very few remember any other Monarch although I did know somebody who saw Queen Victoria in 1897 during her diamond jubilee. My grandmother was 21 years old in January 1901 when Queen Victoria died. Queen Elizabeth II has few others who remember any other Queen Sovereign.

Not expressing opinions is a totally lost art and she personally kept that flag flying. People don't realize that is one reason they adore her especially in this age of everyone having an *opinion* whether they deserve one or not. I'm Charles' age and raised in America at that and I was still bred not to express my opinions inappropriately. And when you don't express opinions you're not so quick to judge either. The two bad habits go together. RIP, your Majesty.

Elizabeth II's death has seen much publicity, not much thought about why she matters, and why the UK has a monarchy. Monarchy shouldn't be used as real-life soap opera, nor just as material to fill space in the media.
The achievement of the British monarchy should become clear in comparison with the histories of other countries. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, and which opposes illegal dictatorship. If there are many reasons England, Wales, and Scotland have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy to unify all the people is an important reason. In the UK, 'peace' in formal speech is "The King's Peace".
Of course King Charles III's first marriage was a tragic mistake; Prince Philip could be tactless; he & Elizabeth II made mistakes as parents. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the unity the monarchy gives the UK & the world. By stabilizing Britain & the commonwealth (e.g. Canada & Australia), it promotes peace in the world. The sea around it didn't protect the U.S.A. against civil war in the 1860s, and the UK could have suffered civil war over slavery in the 19th century; likewise over world war, loss of empire, economic failure, or race in the 20th. There will always be violence and political problems in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the British monarchy and the stability it brings. Since the 1700s, billions of people have lived under the British crown without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives. God save King Charles III, and his successors.

    "SORROW" 2022 %%
    Sorrow is better than laughter
    For by grieving, we're improved.
    Blessed be all who morn
    Till from sadness they're removed.
After death our souls shall fly
    Perhaps from star to star.
    Reaching our destination
    To find Heaven’s gate ajar.
God made us able to cry
    Sorrow teaches us to fear.
Those days we’re selfish and cruel
When life is so short and dear.
Time wipes tears from all faces
Whose hearts are tuned to sorrow.
Those that cry a thousand tears
    Shall be blessed by tomorrow.
It matters not, how long we live
More, how well we play our part.
For the road to Heaven is always near
As long as there's truth in our heart.

Good manners in all situations is a cultural thing in England - it holds society together and lets it function.
      At least, that's the idea.

@@bluecollarlit tell it to the IRA. good manners only work when both sides show good manners. Donald Trump has no manners. By hosting Trump, England is complicit in his abominable behavior and therefore appears to condone it which is sadly not the case. England needs to stop hosting despots.

    TEARS = 2022 #
Tears are the raindrops of the soul
And there's one for all who die.
They are the silent words of grief
As they fall free from the eye.
The shortest verse in the Bible
Is the one where Jesus wept
So, if you hold back tears, shed them
When your pain is too harsh to accept.
Tears are lovelier than a smile
When they come from those you love
As they seek relief from sadness
    When you're summoned from above.
Tears are a love-mates humble gift
When it's time to say goodbye
Though the eyes are wet and swollen
With time and patience they dry.

The British monarchy and colonialism should never be celebrated. All that wealth and jewels acquired through colonialism of other peoples land/resources. In Feb/1952 when Queen Elizabeth ascended, the British economy was in tatters from war. British colonialism rebuilt British economy (pay back war loans) on backs of colonized people of Kenya, Ghana, and Malay. Called the imperial resurgence policy exporting from Kenya tea/coffee, Ghana cocoa, Malay rubber. Read about Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya.

I just not find the compassion for thieves.... If my Father stole it is my duty to return it to the rightful owner, if I keep what my father has stolen does that make me a thief as well?

Don’t know, but if American gives back all the land and rights they “ stole” from native Americans it might start something. 😃
