Don't Confuse a Boring Watch with a Classic Watch

- I want to correct this morning's video by saying a brief run of water over my Seiko SLA051 loosened up the bezel, so it's fine. That 6R35 movement usually needs regulation. Finally, the new Tudor Black Bay Monochrome is not "boring"; it's classic. I'll take that "boring" watch all day long.
The more i get into watches, the more i love quartz.
The Classics NEVER go out of style.❤
I feel like the luckiest person with the 6r35 movement in my spb143, mine gets around +5 seconds over night face up and loses around -4 seconds on it's side, so just switch between letting it face up or on it's side overnight and it's always running almost spot on!
Hello Jeff, I really enjoy your peregrinations centred on your enthusiasm for watches, a rabbit hole that many of us have fallen down. I'm quite fascinated by the fact that your collection is so small and honed. I envy that in the same way that I'm intrigued that a friend of mine has been to the same place on holiday for the past 30 years. Not for me, but I'm enthralled by the decision making. With both yours and Fiona's choices, I think that it's a case of knowing what you like, and I find that quite admirable. Keep on keeping on. Best. Mark.
"...peregrinatuons...?" *An erudite word, my friend but little pilgrimage do I see.*
I’m truly starting to enjoy your videos, appreciate the consistency. Keep up the great work brother!
Pull the trigger on a grand seiko. There’s no overlap in your collection and they are the steez neez. I’m looking at the citizen nb1060 blue lacquered dial. It’s about as close as I can get to an amazing dialed dress watch.
Doxa, Tudor, is this a brave Swiss world or is this too much love? Great video, again. Black Bay Monochrome: clean stark dial. Super, as MWC might say. But in a perfect world give me the FXD Marine Nationale. Military history. Dull titanium. No shiny object. No dust. Bracelet, 2 piece rubber, no. NDC, NATO or ballistic straps only. Constraint creates contentment. Thanks for the videos, PMc
McMahon, you’re being too good to us lately. I got back in from my afternoon cardio, and see another video in my notification box. I won’t complain though.
Those Doxas are cool. Love the look. I know I’m a broken record, but I’m so ecstatic with my recently purchased, 25 year old Omega Seamaster. Have had it since the start of February, but it’s gotten more wrist time than anything else I own. It’s such an enjoyable grail for me, that I’m downsizing half of my collection down. I think that you’ve got a similar sentiment for your Seikos. Sometimes there’s FOMO, but knowing what you like, and having what you like in hand always help to calm those FOMO nerves.
I love the electric blue 41mm Seamaster, tied with the SLA017 as my fave watch.
@@JeffreyMcMahon That’s the one I went for! Certainly a classic timepiece.
Regarding the bezel O-ring, water only helps while it’s wet to lubricate it. Once it dries, it will be stiff again. (Yes, ridiculous sentence)
You have to pull the bezel and apply lubricant to the O-ring for it to be an effective repair.
If you wait too long, the stiff O-ring will become stretched out and eventually jammed and break.
Recommend your watch guy order new bezel O-rings, lube them well, be done with it.
You beat me to it 👍🏼
Jeff, I appreciate this video. I find myself confusing boring watches for classic watches all of the time. I just recently picked up an H.G.P Monin case on a trade thinking it was classic and it turned out to be boring! As for the BB58 and the Doxa, I wouldn’t do either. I have purchased both the gilt BB58 and the Doxa Sub 300 and sold them both. Carlos may enjoy his Doxa, but you are too particular to like that watch and it is very hard to go from Seiko to a Doxa. Seiko has some of the best lume around, and Doxa’s lume is so disappointing that you will come to resent it just as I did. As far as the Black Bay Monochrome goes, it doesn’t have a date function and that may drive you crazy the way it drove me crazy. Now you mentioned a third watch, the Omega Planet Ocean, I don’t have experience with this, but I do have the newest generation Omega Seamaster Professional 300 and it is a watch that will stay in my collection, I have very few complaints about it and it feels close to perfect.
Lousy lume disqualifies it
Best would be to take the bezel off (should come off quite easily) and wash the gasket and bezel in soapy water AND lubricate the bezel with some basic wd40 or something. Works like a miracle. I did it with my MM300 and it is like new now.
The new Tudors have the metas master chronometer, awesome movement
I'm waiting to see if I should get this over the next 6 months. No rush though.
6R35 is kind of hard to regulate because of the larger main spring. I don’t think it’s worth it to get the 70hr power reserve. It suffers from bad isochronism. You can regulate them to say +5 dial up but will run say -15 while on its side so you have to regulate it in a way that gets a good average for the way you wear it. On the wrist, instead of one position like on higher end watches but still you should be able to get to within +15 s/d.
True words. I'm resigned to losing about 45 seconds a day when I wear them, more if I leave them sitting around.
Sometimes using WAXED dental floss to clean and lubricate under the bezel works well.
There's a good title for a book, " Under the Bezel..."
Works for gritty feeling crown stems too
Your sla’s are my grails. I’d take any of them over a Rolex any day. I’m stuck in the $1000 range, but still love my collection.
It’s funny I was complaining about my king turtle padi losing 10 seconds when I got it. Now after a year and a half it loses 16 seconds a day. I have finally found peace with it especially after your video today.
My turtle is running two to 3 seconds fast.bought it 2 years ago. 4r36 and 35 and 34 etc are better than my 6r35s.
I have the manta ray turtle.
@@panospeter_pan4257 insanely good 👍
I have the SLA051 with the "tight" bezel. the water trick works for a few hours and then the problem comes back. I believe its the gasket under the bezel dries out and then creates friction. Mines back at Seiko at the moment having it fixed under warranty.
All the best.
I think the Tudor would compete for wrist time with your SLA models. My Planet Ocean solves that dilemma for me every time.
My Willard with the 6r35 starting losing a second per hour. I sent it back under warranty. It’s now -15 seconds a day pretty much dead on all the time. So I guess that’s good.
A drop or two of WD-40 (or other light oil) at 2 opposite points of the bezel also improves its action, sometimes a lot.
I have 2 seokos that use the 6R35 movement. Both are absolutely terrible. On the timegrapher, one of them looks like a goddamn sine wave. I don’t mind a little beat error, and I can adjust the rate as long as its timegraph is somewhat of a straight line. But this thing needs service desperately. It’s supposed to be a higher end movement than the 4R35 but all my 4R35’s blow it out of the water.
My 4R35s have always been more accurate than the 6R35 as well.
That is unacceptable and why I picked up some NOS Seikos with the 6R15; Seiko charges more and provides less performance the ETA/Sellita/soprod Swiss or even the Miyota movements.
Jeff I can feel another watch purchase coming my way. Nothing I can do but just go with it.
The "monochrome" Black Bay 41 just announced at Watches and Wonders is exactly the diver watch that I had been wanting Tudor to issue for years. As you know I've owned two Black Bays, a blue and a GMT. I don't care for gilt anything my watches. Finally we get stainless steel hands, silver bezel markings, and stainless steel indices -- to me that's what should have been available in the catalog all along. I predict it will quickly become the best seller in the Black Bay line. Will I get one? Doubtful, as I have a Planet Ocean in 42 mm. But if this watch existed five years ago? It would most certainly be in my collection.
The Monster still in the rotation or did it get shown the door already like your last Citizen? 😜. Keep us apprised of its accuracy as opposed to the 6R35 please.
Monster is more accurate
if he sells it I would love to buy it !!
@@JeffreyMcMahon not surprised, let’s see how this 6R55 movement does.
McMahon hitting his stride with this video. I enjoyed watching this one
Do you still have the sla057?
I have the 055
WD-40 silicone is the safe option. Silicone oil will not damage the watch like regular WD -40
Thank you. Either that, or I may need a new rubber gasket.
McMahon check out my new Seiko Planet Ocean Sea Dweller. I love your sla055. You dont need a gmt, or an alpinist. Dont go swiss.
I will. Thanks.
@@JeffreyMcMahonironically my family own breitling botiques
Am I the only one who doesn’t care about accuracy?? Only in practical terms of course I appreciate the precision mechanics but I wear a piece once every two weeks so it’s never that far off and I always have to reset it anyways
Yeah same. I never bother to set my time to the second, so unless it’s off at least by maybe a couple of minutes in a 24 hour period, then I probably wouldn’t notice.
You’re very productive with the videos recently! I tried on the orange Doxa 300 at a watch show and really liked it, although I prefer the SLA043 and don’t need to own the Doxa. Have to say when I’ve tried on a variety of Tudor watches they just don’t excite me, although they’re great watches. Love the Uemura, 6R35 movements turn me off.
That grey tshirt suits you more than black👍🏻
Prx boring, submariner classic (79090)
