- With Metal Gear Solid 5 finally hitting PlayStation plus I thought now is the right time to take a look at the Easter eggs, secrets, referencesand the weird and wonderful cutscenes which are surprisingly missable during a typical playthrough. I’m sure there are many many more hidden secrets and nods to pop culture so if I miss any, write them in the comments and receive the praise you deserve. There are one of 2 mild spoilers but nothing which will ruin the complex stoyline of Metal Gear.

Honestly the first time the Quiet rain scene happened on my game I found it really cute. Seeing her and Snake have a bit of fun was nice to see.

Bloodvein it actually has a practical part to play in the gameplay. If you're hiding in a toilet and a soldier saw you go in there, and so goes to investigate it, if you play the cassette tape on speaker, the guard thinks its someone taking a shit so he resides not to open the door.

There are more easter eggs. Nearly the whole game is based on Rambo 3. The setting is in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and you arrive in Afghanistan on horseback with Ocelot. This scene is very identical to Rambo 3 scene where Rambo arrives in Afghanistan on horseback along with a Mujahedin fighter and the dialogue is also similar. Also the mission Phantom Limbs is similar to the whole story of Rambo 3. Snake goes to save his old friend from Soviet captivity just like Rambo did. Other missions have references to the movie as well. In the mission "Where do the bees Sleep?" you search for a missile launcher called the "Honey Bee" which is based on the FIM-92 Stinger missiles and you must find it before the Soviets do. In Rambo 3 the Soviet General tortures Colonel Trautman to learn the location of the Stinger missiles which were sent to the Mujahedin. In MGS V the missiles were also sent to the Mujahedin and they hid it and the Soviets torture a Mujahedin prisoner to find where they hid it. Also the mission "A Quiet exit" is inspired by the ending of Rambo 3 where the whole Soviet army attacks Rambo and Trautman just like in MGS V where the whole Soviet army attacks Snake and Quiet. There are many other similarities like the vehicles and gun emplacements featured in the game. For me the whole game is a Rambo 3 easter egg/reference and if you play it Rambo style (Shirtless and Bandana, stealth and some times guns blazing) you will notice more similarities

The same could be said about literally any two movies/games/books about for example WW2, Vietnam War etc etc.
No shit they are riding horses in Afghanistan, the country had three and a half roads in 80's, of course they are going to ride horses, it's a fucking desert. You could also say that in both MGS and Rambo there are guns, people, tanks, sand, sky, buildings, air, planet Earth and other bullshit. It must be a reference because of that.
This Game has multiple references to Moby Dick, and I have seen nobody adress this. In the opening cutscene after the doctor makes you look in the mirror, he says "Forget your name, you are Ahab", Captain Ahab is the name of the captain in Moby Dick, also Captain Ahabs ship is called The Pequod, the fact that they call the Helicopter "Pequod" is an obvious reference to Moby Dick

I love the birthday part. It shows the developer was very thoughtful to create special moments that will be remembered by the players.
When you're in a box and 50-60 meters away from an enemy, he will call CP and say something like "CP I saw a box moving by itself" of course CP will tell him to knock it off. Doing this a second time he will ask to shoot the box, after a while of doing this a psyche will be scheduled for him and he will start questioning his sanity

The explanation given in I believe metal gear solid 2 is that the nanomachines filter the phrase “The Patriots” meaning anyone who has them hears LaLiLuLeLo instead and conversely can not say the phrase “the patriots”
TheRoyalUnicorn That's not quite true...they have no problem with the "R" and "L" sound itself, they just have both of them as one letter and don't differentiate them. Example: The protagonist of One Piece is named Luffy, some characters pronounce him "Ruffy", others clearly pronounce an "L" but mostly it's pronounced like somewhere between "L" and "R".
Most asian people have problems with these letters but only when they use a language that uses the latin alphabet...and honestly it has also to do with them just not giving a shit. Most asians with bad accent just never actually try to learn it...they learn the language to a degree they can barely work in their profession and then they leave it at that. An asian family moved into my neighborhood about 10 years ago, the (then)children speak without accent today (took them less than a year to get really good), the mother adapted quite well from just raising them and the traditionalistic and abusive father who spends almost all the time in his takeaway is still only shouting unintelligible mess towards his customers...his accent has not changed since the first time I heard him talk

Plot twist : The staff members who are watching Snake bathe with Quiet is actually talking about how sexy snake is.
The Birthday Easter egg is such a nice surprise for a lot of us who either never had anyone wish us a happy birthday due to not having friends like that growing up, loss of family ties, or simply being forgotten.
A friend of mine had no idea about this and I had bought him the game as a gift the previous year knowing about the Easter egg and how I wouldn’t be able to visit him due to family matters so I asked him to stream playing the game for me.
When he thought something crazy was going on mother base to then be shown this surprise and coming to the realization why I had asked him to play the game I gifted him had brought him from confusion of the situation then tears when getting my message wishing him a Happy Birthday.
I could see all these emotions play on his face. From laughing at what was going on with the singing, to then cry when seeing this cake, and to see the joy the surprise had brought him made it all worth it.
He held his watery eyes together until I messaged him right after and he broke down thanking me for having stuck by his side after all these years of knowing each other and saying how I’m the only person he considers a brother.
All thanks to Kojima and the team I was able to bring my struggling brother happiness on his 25th year of existence. We’re more than family...we’re DIAMOND DOGS.

6:27 how it feels to have perfect teamwork with your squad
Yeah, Quiet in the rain is awkward, but once they start to splash fight i think its actually quite a beautiful moment. (she didn't have to be naked for it but that just kojima for you). It's one few moments in the game you get to see Venom and Quiet being innocent and playful and you can see they both want to keep going on like that (that whole "love blooming on the battlefield" thing MG does), but then quickly remember their place and job. Quite sad when you think about it.

It's a great game but its unfinished and takes a very dark and strange turn at Ch 2.

But this game's theme is the chain of revenge, the phantom pain - the continuous chain that you experience when the target of your vengeance is gone. It is not possible to convey the subtleties of this theme in a standard boss battle."
I think this kinda confirms that the emptiness in Chapter 2 was intentional to show the player the futility of revenge after it's achieved...how it leaves one person chasing phantoms with no goal to look up to...which when you think about it...was Venom's only purpose for being Big Boss' decoy.

Killion Ryan Also, he totally failed to mention that the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo Is literally just an easy way to say vowels in Japanese order. It's one of the first things you learn if you look into Japanese. It's not even nonsensical; it's like naming yourself part of the ABCs.
I never knew that cutscenes played when getting 100% bond with quiet. I got the cutscene so early that I thought it was part of the game

It was my bday a few days ago and since I couldn't get together with my friends because of quarantine we made a discord call and we played games. At one point I streamed this game to them and got the birthday scene and they sang the happy bday song to me. I was so happy

The Quiet rain scene, as awkward as it is, never fails to bring a smile to my face for some reason.
This is the only game I have ever gotten a Platinum trophy for. I did it because it was so much fun, it was never a chore to complete the tasks, it was always pure fun and perfect gameplay. Ended up playing around 180 hours and got the platinum trophy. Amazing, I recommend everyone do it and experience the game to the fullest.

It's interesting that they used Midge Ure's version of "The Man Who Sold The World". It could be for copyright reasons (I don't see why, considering they used the likes of "Final Countdown", "Maneater", and "Kids in America"), but I think that Ure's rendition fits more tonally with the game. Its arrangement of synths and bass pads gives it a reaaaaaally eerie feeling, and just feels so damn right in this game.
I remember starting up the game for the first time, and watching the beginning first-person sequence, with no cuts, no dialogue, just slowly gaining vision in a hospital bed with this song backing it up and being immediately floored by the game's presentation. Still one of my favorite games of all time, and one I frequently revisit to this day.
Very late reply but I think there was significance in using a cover version. The Big Boss we play as was just a body double for the real Big Boss. A cover of the original if you would prefer.
Why did the scene with Quiet dancing make you feel awkward? I though it was beautiful especially when the music kicks in and Snake and Her splash water. It is a very sweet and happy moment to me. Funny thing is I don’t have much of a connection with these characters or this game since I have never played a Metal Gear game but I loved though that scene was great, just ignore the fan service if you don’t like it. Great video by the ways, awesome Easter eggs and secrets.
It's beautiful sure but it's awkward because it's not normal human interaction and the camera angles are obviously pointed to her more provocative areas. I don't know about you but it's the equivalent to an unsolicitited nude, particularly dick pics

do you want to know why it is a david bowie cover and not the actual song? It's not for copyright reasons, they have take on me in the soundtrack which must of costed millions to license, because it's a more popular song. The song "the Man who sold the world" is about someone meeting his doppleganger for the first time ffs, and the fact that the song is a cover means that you are essentially a "cover" for big boss. So the whole reason it is a cover was intentional, same reason why David Hayter was not used for the portrayl of Big Boss (or kojima hates hayter honestly Suferland did a great job but the reasoning behind not using hayter just doesn't make much sense). Because technically everyone who has ever played MGSV is Big Boss themselves. And there avatar is Venom Snake/Big boss. Venom snake is the Big Boss to be killed in the very first Metal Gear on psx by Solid Snake, and that is why you are so surprised to see him in MGS1, because he was thought to be dead. That was retconned by kojima in mgsv hence the back of the tape saying "Operation Intrude" the same operation that snake killed BB in Metal Gear 1

Silent hills would have been the best horror game ever. Even Resident evil 7 wich is good, is basically a copycat of silent hills so.. It's such a shame. The demo was terrifying

Hellyeah this game is amazing iv got multiple accounts. One non lethal one for lethal plus nuke holding and ones just for storing all the S++ on base blockaded with nukes again = untouchable.

I always liked the Quiet rain scene. The music and scene has a very wholesome quality to it, two battle-hardened soldiers playing for the first time in a long time.
My mum came into my room halfway through the 100% quiet bond scene, I still can't forget the shock on her face.

That AI "train routes" part is a reference to Metal Gear Solid 1, you can also hear train station names spoken in a really wierd way when you head towards Hal Emmerich lab to face Ninja.

I played this on my ps3 and got it for free about last week. And I've had even more damn fun than before! It's hilarious to run around with the battle dress and punch people lol. Grenade ricochet is fun to!
One small Easter egg you missed, after the mission Shining lights even in death snake says “turn their ashes to diamonds” they actually do that and on the diamond dogs patch (the actual emblem not your custom one) there is a small diamond at the bottom
Just A Midget that was such a cool thing to realise, I'm going back through it again finally and after finishing that mission I noticed the twinkle. I sat there confused for a second before realising and it was pretty heart-warming considering the 30 minutes beforehand (Shining Lights).
It's a shame you missed the Moby Dick reference to Pequod/Ahab... haven't noticed anyone catch that one
Recently replayed MGS3 where another Bowie reference is made. After Snake is dropped off in the forest in the first cutscene, the major advises “we should use code names, you as ground control will be naked snake.” Snake replies “and what should I call you?” To which he replies “call me Major Tom.” Sooooo good!
I'm laughing at the thumbnail, the chicken hat makes it so the enemy will ignore you if they spot you (up to 3 times) but snake still has blood stains, meaning they're either terrible at stealth and got a combat alert with the hat, or the managed to damage themselves
