  • A masked hooded Villain with the power to freeze people? An evil emperor that shoots lightning? In this video I compare Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Star Wars franchise. The Prequels, Originals, and Sequels to these stories are all eerily similar! Even the shots are the same, so let's take a deep dive!

The voice actor for Zuko actually talked about in an interview that the voice actor of Zuko’s dad is Mark Hamill and the story of how Zuko got his scar was loosely based on the “Luke I am your father” scene as kind of an homage to that!

Also don’t forget the season 2 finale was a lot like Empire Strikes Back, the hero stops in the middle of training to help his friends then ends up losing and almost dying him and friends escape and the empire/fire nation gain a huge upper hand in the war.

The entire Crossroads finale was an homage to Empire Strikes Back: Protagonist leaves his friends to go train with an eccentric master, has a vision of his friends in peril, cuts his training short to head back to an opulent city that's been turned into a trap, then takes a fat L at the hands of the main villains' generals and barely escapes with the help of his friends.

Finally someone said it XD other people don't see it until I mention it, for years now!
Also, Azula's introduction scene in season 2 (and Azula's menace in general) is very similar to Darth Vader's scene in Empire
Offiucer: "We can't get there because astroids."
Vader: "I don't care, go into those astroids."
Offiucer: "We can't get there because the Tide."
Azula: "Do the tides command this ship?"
    ALSO
    Luke and Aang-
Luke and Aang: "I have to go help the love interest!"
Yoda and the Guru: "No, If you don't complete your training you will lose your current save file!"
At least that's how I remember it :P
    EDIT:
    ALSO!!!!
just realized Zuko had a reverse arch from Luke, cause he started believing he was the heir to conquerers but discovered that he is the heir to the avatar
No unlike Luke who thought his father was a hero until he found out he was Vader
Jesus they copied even more than I thought XDDD (Avatar is still my favorite show after Bojack Horseman, it improved on star wars a lot as far as I'm concerned)

The asteroid Star Wars quote reminds me of a Avatar quote:
Aang:Katara, your not gonna win this fight.
      Katara:I don’t care
I don’t get the last bit btw and also just realised Azula and Darth Vader are more similar than I thought

Edit: There's also the season 2 finale of Avatar sharing many similarities with Star Wars 2nd movie. A captured ally, the hero abandoning their training to save their friends, the hero almost dying, and one of the allies being left behind as the heroes fly away from a defeat.

I remember when Avatar first came out and I immediately picked up on it being the hero's journey, though I didn't know it was called that at the time. I was actually pretty pissed off being a SW fan and dropped the show after the Southern Air Temple lol. Then one afternoon I watched The Northern Air Temple and enjoyed it so much I had to catch up and finish the series.
I love both, they're more important to me than any religious story and A:tLA especially has better teachings than most.

I first realized that the end of season 2 was nearly identical to TESB: Aang abandons his training to rescue his friends -- choosing attachment over enlightenment -- and is absolutely packed up for it, one of the good guys gets captured by the bad guys, and the rest escape after the main female character uses her special powers to rescue the hero.
Then I realized that Aang refusing to kill the Fire Lord was a lot like Luke refusing to kill Vader, and thought I'd look for videos where anybody else points this stuff out.

I think this is a prime example of how you can use the same story beats while changing things just enough to make something amazing. Both franchises are ones I grew up with and love to this day! There's a reason the heroes journey is such a tried and true format, and these two franchises go beyond that and end up making two properties that are distinct in terms of style and aesthetic while matching eachother plot wise. There are several things that Avatar added of course that Star Wars didnt have, like Azula or even Iroh. Things like that add another layer and in turn made Avatar distinct despite its similarities. There's a mentality in modern storytelling that everything has to be new, unique, and often esoteric, often valuing pushing boundries rather than telling a cohesive narrative. These both show that you can rely on the old favorites and change enough to make something completely new.

This is a wonderful video. I am happy I'm not alone in seeing such parallels. However, Anakin is The Chosen One, as George Lucas, Dave Filoni, Hayden Christensen, Matt Lanter, Mark Hammill, and Sam Witwer have all said. Luke is the catalyst that reminds Anakin of his duty to the galaxy, his family, and himself. It is Luke's willingness to sacrifice himself and put faith in Anakin--the faith that so few had in him from the beginning, that helps him to have faith in himself, which is what was missing in the first place. He sought validation, control over his life, and the ability to help everyone. However, by seeking that validation from others, control over his life (since he, unfortunately, remained a slave throughout its duration), and the power to protect those whom he loves, he loses himself.
Essentially, Luke's presence and willingness to believe in him, and forgive him--thereby showing him compassion/unconditional love, allows Anakin to reconnect with his center (everything he refers to as being central to a Jedi's life in E2) and break away from his guilt, turmoil, and honestly, the poor teachings of both Jedi and Sith. Anakin is an avatar (literal meaning here) for The Force. As the dark side grows in The Force, the dark side fills Ani. He is the one who is born of no father and has the highest midiclorian count, ever (I know, Luke and Leia's couldn't have been recorded, but that doesn't mean the thirsty Jedi didn't test them, nor does it change the fact that Anakin is TCO.)
True balance is found in the Force when Anakin finds balance, compassion, bravery, healing, and faith within himself. He has lived on both sides, not unlike Revan. Everything--the government, Jedi, Sith...everything had to start over in his wake. See Mortis Arc in The Clone Wars show; he brings balance to the Force and serves as a conduit for the Daughter's life force. They, too, said he was The Chosen One in that arc.
However, I DON'T disagree with your assessment of Anakin/Obi-Wan's dynamic as compared with ATLA's apparitions. Ani/Obi's stories fit the ancestral apparitions like near-perfect puzzle pieces. Anakin's comparison/story doesn't end there.
Aang reminds me of both Anakin and Luke. As for his similarities to Anakin, he, too, struggles with finding balance within himself, confidence in his ability to fulfill his destiny, the pressure of said destiny, impatience, and revenge. I see Aang as a what-if for if Anakin was trained outside the dogmatic ways of the Jedi and oppression of the Sith; If Ani was allowed his attachments and did not turn to the dark side.
Attachments, much like everything else in both universes, require balance. Not the complete absence of them like the Jedi teach, nor selfish love, which is essentially ownership, as practiced by the Sith. Attachments, unselfish love/compassion, and family--adopted or not, save both Anakin and Aang.
Katara is by Aang's side every step of the way, which allows her to stop Aang from losing himself, giving, up, and/or turning to the dark side. For instance, Katara pulled Aang down from his Avatar state when he was going to kill for revenge.
In comparison, Padmé couldn't be there when Anakin needed her love, guidance, and steady presence because of their career expectations/Jedi rules/war, and restrictions. I love Obi-Wan and I love him with Anakin, but he isn't enough. Obi-Wan was too reserved and too much of a rule-follower to teach balance and provide affection. Unfortunately, Ahsoka was prevented from being there as well, for reasons which undermined The Order's legitimacy for her and Anakin, as well as many others. Moreover, Ani loses his footing when the women in his life are taken from him; He requires balance even in the company he keeps. When these people are taken from him, his turn is made that much easier. He completes his turn after Palps isolates him, like the true abuser/manipulator he is.
On that note, if Aang didn't have his friends as guides that provide perspective, reassurance, and grounding, his story would have been different. Also, if he had someone grooming him from age 9-23, that too would have been a major factor. If Katara wasn't there to pull Aang back, see him in his darker Avatar state, and voice her concerns, he would have turned and lost sight of himself. Katara is like Luke in that she shows affection, forgiveness, and moral aptitude in moments when Aang isn't able to detach himself enough emotionally and mentally to be logical.
Last, they both share difficulties with attachments in their journey. Anakin becomes obsessive about his attachments because they aren't allowed. He would not be able to let go if he had to do so. However, Aang finally comes to accept that he may not be able to save his friends, and most concerning--Katara. It takes him a while, but, like Ani, it is suggested that in order for him to reach his highest potential and satisfy his destiny, he has to be willing to lose everything and everyone. Honestly, he didn't love selfishly in TPM, it isn't until he has been denied an opportunity to see/free his mom that he becomes obsessed. As an adult, he never would have left his mom behind, regardless of even her own wishes. When everything he cherishes is always ripped away, or threatened, or he's reminded he isn't allowed to have said feelings, he becomes more protective of his right to have them, making them possessions/him possessive.
Similarly, as Aang mentioned in his final stages of learning, he feels it is his job as the Avatar/TCO to be able to save them all without making that choice or sacrificing them. He, like everyone else, requires affection and kinship, which is not something he can find within the Order, except for with Ahsoka and occasionally Obi-Wan, but even then, it's limited. He requires guidance and unconditional love. In another similar area, they are driven to make sure they either stop their visions from happening, or in the case of marrying, are driven by the hope they come to pass.
While Aang isn't nearly as volatile as Anakin, I do believe these comparisons don't work in a straight line, as you mentioned. But please, don't forget Anakin is The Chosen One, which is what makes him such a wonderful character. Even the damned can come back. It's never too late. Finally, our hero doesn't have to be perfect. Due to the Jesus-like nature of his origin, the overall prophecy to bring balance/absolution, and his experience with the religious being one of isolation amongst/rejection, coupled with his monstrous acts, his return to the light was made even more poignant.
Both Aang and Anakin's stories are about saving the world/galaxy from evil, wielding both dark and light sides of nature/The Force, and the crazy pressure placed upon a very young boy to sacrifice everything, including those whom he loves, in order to meet his highest potential. SW is a story of redemption, more specifically, Anakin's, but of course, others are redeemed as well. George hated that everyone thought Vader was such a monster that they missed his overall thesis. I agree Luke is a picture-perfect hero, even during his "dark" period. He stops himself before he loses control, unlike Anakin. He doesn't actually kill Ben and regrets his choices early enough, foregoing more irreparable damage. Similar to Luke, Kenobi appears to be perfect as well. However, in this story about balance, we can't just have the light because that's one-sided. Anakin is the Force, both light and dark, not unlike ourselves. He's the Yin and Yang of it all, for better or worse. He evens out The Force, and by doing so, he saves those whom he leaves behind, which isn't unlike Aang.
    SORRY ABOUT THAT LONG COMMENT!

I found out that the scene in Star Wars episode VI:The Empire Strikes back where Luke Skywalker didn’t finish the Jedi’s training of Yoda when Luke found out he can’t be able to save Han And Leela,Luke lost to Darth Vader, he fell from the high and Leela came and save him ,is pretty similar to the scene in Avatar Book 2:where Aang didn’t finish to connect his avatar state when Aang found out he can’t saved Katara, He lost to Azula,he fell from the the high and Katara came and saved him.
Avatar have 3 seasons, book 1,2 and 3 kinda like the trilogy thing that Star Wars did.

There's another one: the Light/Dark Sides of the Force and Airbending/Firebending. Air Nomad philosophy emphasizes detachment from the physical, much like the Jedi, while Aang-Era Firebending was fueled by anger, hate, emotion, aggression, a lot like how the Sith used the Force. The Sun Warriors from Avatar and the Grey Jedi from Star Wars could also have influenced each other.
Regarding Aang finding a way to spare Ozai and save the world, the implication is that if Aang had killed Ozai, he would have become a dark Avatar, which I could see happening. After killing once or twice, it'd be easier to do it again, and renouncing/betraying a part of his lost culture could set him down a darker path.

As mentioned, both Luke and Aang are initially unprepared to get involved in the fight. What's the moment that commits them? They both return home to find the empire has destroyed it, and find the skeletal remains of their parental figures.
In Return of the Jedi/Book 3, a big group of allies gather for a major offensive against the empire, expecting them to be vulnerable, only to discover, "IT'S A TRAP!"
Need I even mention Aang leaving the Guru to save Katara, or has that horse been kicked to death already?

Most of these are just small similarities that don't matter in the long run or popular character tropes. There are tons more differences than there is similarities. Things like "the villains both shoot lighting" or "masked villian who freezes people" aren't really enough to say either was copying either. There are 1000s of villains that use masks or use lightning and it's unfair to say either copied the other because of such a small detail. Things like the best friends have to fight each other because one is turning evil or the wise old man who talks to the protagonist as some sort of thing to help the protagonist are far from new concepts and could probably be found in movies predating star wars. There are a million smart or tough guys who doesn't believe in the magical ability of that world, there are a million sibling relationships, a million strong women and you can't really say that was taken from star wars or LOK, a million villains that have been burnt or scarred, evil empires the heroes have to take down, magic abilities, genocide on a peaceful people, you get the point.
The rest of it is mostly just basic heroes journey stuff and character arcing. I'm not saying some elements of the series are inspired from or taken from star wars, there are multiple star wars references in ATLA, Dave filoni worked on a decent chunk of the episodes (Kathleen Kennedy was an executive producer of the avatar movie, which explains why the sequels sucked ass) and there are definitely parts I could confidently say were inspired from star wars. But they certainly did not copy them, avatar has so many unique and different things that sets it far apart from star wars and is nowhere near the same story or a reskinned copy. Star Wars and ATLA/LOK are 3 different stories with a few similaties. No one copied anyone.
Anyway, great job with the video. Keep up the quality content dude.

Dave Filoni actually wrote and directed many episodes throughout the first season. like season 1 episode 10 (directed by Dave Filoni) in its entirety is a star wars homage.
