interesting fact about the beetle shown at 0:23. Beetles with dimples on their back live in very hot/dry areas. just before dawn they crawl out of the ground and wait motionless. moisture in the air gets caught in their dimples like dewdrops on grass. Some beetles can survive on this water alone
Hi Arvid, Great tutorial. I was wondering though, I have Maya 2017 and Arnold MtoA 1.4.2.2, but my layout for the basic Arnold surface node is very different to yours and I do not have an aiRemapFloat node. Are these things you have customised or is there something I am missing? Many thanks.
Yes I have customized the node attributes, which you can do by right clicking the node and editing the "Custom Attribute list". And the is no node called aiRemapFloat, it is call aLremapFloat. From alShaders.
Is there a way to make this with C4DtoA? Can somebody please share this shader with me, or is there anywhere to purchase this kind of shader (Cinema 4d Arnold)?
Hi Arvid, thanks a lot for your amazing tutorials! I'm trying to create a soap bubble and I wonder if I can enter the actual physical values to get the right shades of colors. I tried searching the scientific values but do not seem to work as they should. Do you have any advice? Thanks!!
The material itself works pretty well, but I'm having some trouble with the IOR values of specular and refraction. Once you find the correct value of the refraction IOR (should be very low near 1,003) to amplify the effect as you have shown by increasing the IOR value of the specular I have some problems. Increasing this IOR get very strong reflections, but color shades do not increase as hoped, or otherwise are hidden by reflections.
I have a question, do you find that arnold isnt as compatable with xgen and bifrost etc in comparisson to other renderers, I like it, but i have problems at almost every turn with paint effects textures and foam also
Very good tutorial! Great technique with the bumps stacking. Quick question. In my Arnold RenderView, in isolated mode, whenever I select the alLayerFloat, it doesn't show anything. Therefore, all the data that the bump nodes are generating is stuck in that particular node, preventing any bump to actually happen in the Iridescence shader. Maybe it's a bug on the alShaders? I tried to combine the bump nodes info with a layered texture to no avail. I have Maya 2017, Arnold update 1.4.2.2.
yeah its kind of a bug/limitation. Currently isolate only works if the out data type is the same as the input data type. What that means is, it only renders if the outColor (RGB) connects to an input (RGB) slot. If you try to isoloate a node where you only plug outColorR to and inputRGB..it wont render. hence I plug a remap node in between so the data flow is consitent. How it does make sense.
Thanks for the fast answer! Tricky workaround. I have the bump2d node connected to an alRemapFloat that it's connected to the Layer 1 attribute of the alLayerFloat node. It is there that the data is stuck. I have the alLayerFloat connected to the bump2d node, and that node to the Bump Mapping of the iridescence shader, but no bump is showing. Maybe it's my installation of alShaders (current al Shaders shows Arnold 4.2.12.2 and I have 4.2.16.3). Btw, great channel and great content, I'll support you on Patreon.
Loved the tutorial. But, I am not sure what I'm doing wrong, I can't use 'alSurface' and 'aiThinFilm' at the same time. When I used 'MtoA 1.4.2.2', 'alSurface' was there but no 'aiThinFilm'. So I installed 'MtoA-2.0.1-2017' to get the 'aiThinFilm', but, there was no 'alSurface'. Is there any version of MtoA where both can be used?
Thanks for the tutorial! Just wondering, if I complete this tutorial, would I be able to export these textures and have them somewhat similar in Unreal Engine? Or is a lot of this stuff specific to Arnold/Maya and probably wouldn't transfer well?
Hey Arvid, Im curious if you would be able to have a crystal shader that has imperfections and cracks and what not inside of the model, any idea if it is possible?
hi arvid i have problem with saving image in arnold 1.4.2.2 ,arnold doesnt save the color space if you can help me how to save it like the window render and thank you
Hi Arvid. My apologies for messaging you on Instagram. I just need your assistance. I am trying to create a silver foil holographic shader to be placed on a credit card model. I am using the ThinFilm node in Arnold like you do in this tutorial. I get the "rainbow" effect but I cannot get the silver aspect. It doesn't shine or pop enough. Do you have any pointers and tips that would help. Thank you!
hello Arvid, Thank you for sharing. I've got a question Arvid, to make it brighter, could we also change the reflection type to metallic and hook thinFilm up to the reflection color slot? Would that work as well? Thank you so much!
Hey Arvid, I am a student down at Fullsail University going for a study of texture creation and lighting. Im currently in contact with a few friends up at MPC, I noticed you have done some work for MPC, Would I be able to shoot you an email or a message or something? I would greatly appreciate it! Loving the tutorials btw! Nicholas DeMaria
Hi Arvid, I'm approaching this tutorial just now, 4 years after its load. How can I use the AL Iridescence node that you use since the beginning of the video? Thank you so much in advance P.S. Does anybody know it?
@@nathali2023 the approach is still valid. It's just that some nodes have changed name, or been moved directly into the surface shader for the thinFilm itself. With a bit of digging should be able to reproduce in Maya 2022 and above
@@arvidurs Nope. I mean, you've got Spec Color 1 and 2, then Spec Roughness 1 and then 2. But I only have one Spec Color and one Spec Roughness setting on my Arnold. How can I get Specular Roughness 2 on the aiStandardSurface? I'm using Maya 2020.

Not what I was looking for, but this is awesome! Now I have to model something that utilizes this texture!
This is what I'm always looking for, fantastic!!
Is there a reason I don't have an "aiRemapFloat" node?
Arnold Version: 1.4.2.3
the "RemapFloat" node is from a third party group of shaders called "alShaders" by AndersLanglands.
@@user-ne2bb5nh7t Thanks, the guy could've dropped that hint.
you can simply use aiRange instead

I havent tried that yet, but I will give this a go. Should be as simple as plugging the thin film to the specular color in dielectric mode.

I can't quite understand where you got the first shader from. The one that is called ai_iridescence. I don't have that on my Arnold.
It's the aiStandardSurface - he renamed it

thank you so much for your videos- you made me fall in love with arnold - (and my boyfriend too :) )

You have the option so save the image (raw) or save it color managed. But only in the arnold render view framebuffer
in the old version i didnt have this problem when i installed the new version of arnold , it wont save the color managed it always saved the SRGB only

No worries! You can also try to map a texture to a facing ratio shader to get this Silver moving effect
Thank you! I am guessing I could use a ramp texture to create this effect correct? Or what texture you recommend if that's not ideal?
