  • An INCREDIBLE - Vintage PAPERBACK Auction - Warren + Wignall - March 2024 - You'll Be Shocked!
    In today's video we take a look back at the recent auction at Warren and Wignall. This auction was a house clearance and contained thousands of vintage paperbacks and pulps. Rare Penguins and Pans a plenty as well as a host of rarer books and pulps not often seen alongside SF 1st editions. Quite the auction indeed.

    I’m not a Pulps collector, but there are a lot of collected and compiled stories as ebooks online, plus you can even find complete issues to download and format in original mode for reading as ebooks. They are very entertaining reads and a cheaper, space saving way to experience this relatively extinct historical art form.

      I'll definitely take an e-book if it's the only way I can get to read something, for example a rare crime story from the thirties.

    Well, this one was a real eye opener Jules. Firstly I always believed that there was a buyers AND sellers fee - 25% for the buyer seems a bit steep compared to the norm. Now I know nothing about books outside the SF and comics genres but I was genuinely amazed at the low prices for the pulps - especially the 40s and 50s stuff. If I were collecting these now I would have ripped their arm off at those prices. I've obviously been labouring under the misapprehension that pulps were booming. The auction was an interesting lesson for me.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому

      Thanks Kenny. I too feel some of the pulps were priced very reasonable. The auction itself raised many eyebrows. I have one book from the lots...the PKD SF book club of Time Out of Joint🙂

    As you well know from hanging out with me, I'm a condition obsessive and while I get it that not everyone is and that unlike me, many serious collectors are completists, some of the prices here were a bit mad. And yes, it is a shame that the auction house didn't talk to experts and pull the cherries out of the more undistiguished boxes (there was a very uncommon D G Compton -'The Palace' among a random lot of crime novels). There were a few uncommon things in that Gollancz Yellowjacket box- such as Sladek's 'Invisible Green' and the W J Burley SF novel (which was in a bit of a state) is a super-rare book. Would also have been interesting to see what printing that Ballard was, but I'd say it's a reprint.
    The 'Androids' was marred by bad spine lean, otherwise a good price. My Rapp & Whiting 'Ubik' knocked the one on auction into a cocked hat, but then ,y good lady bought it for me a good ten years ago from Addyman in Hay. The Vonnegut/Dick paperback box was nice, marred by a few second raters.
    Overall, from an SF perspective, the best lot there was the R A Lafferty one- they looked in mostly nice condition, many pretty rare books there and they are in demand- I have the signed limited titles from that tranche, but then Les Escott of Morrigan, who issued them, is a mate of mine. That would have been worth buying by anyone wanting to enhance their SF collection or sell these books on and make some decent cash.
    For me the highlight was that lot of 'The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction'- I'm not big on mags, but that was very nice indeed! See you sunday...

    Wow, just wow! As a massive Philip K Dick collector, I'd say there was some great stuff there, but as a massive Philip K Dick collector, there were some mad prices too, more than I'd ever pay by quite a margin. First UK of Do Androids Dream for a grand? No thanks. Even 200 quid for Flow My Tears seems a bit steep. I thought the PKD market had eased off and prices were coming down but it seems not. Oh well. Anyway, see you Sunday Jules... Jason.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому +1

      It may have been this auction Jason. Prices were generally a bit crazy although on the vintage paperbacks lots, if you knew you needed most of them, they weren't ridiculous, although condition was definitely a bit questionable. PKD has always been a sought after author. See you Sunday🙂👍

    The Coles mysteries are hard to find, they were members of The Detective Club and though there SA's are easier to find their mysteries, (which they were the most famous for,) are really hard to find. It took me a while, but I finally found one of their mysteries for a good price.

    Must've been intentional to pepper the gems in amongst the dross knowing that otherwise the third-rate stuff would be tough to shift. Penguin Quatermass volumes used to be omnipresent at the book tables outside the BFI cinema in London. Far nicer than the Arrow reprints.
    Are we sure that's all from one owner? A staggering amount -They must've died from lack of sleep!!

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому

      I'm not so sure. They did group some authors into lots but the Penguins were just done by colour. They would have got a lot more by auctioning the rare Penguins individually. Yes, it was from a house clearance. Still unsure of the original owner though....

    For the UK Lord of the Rings hardbacks, most collectors can't afford 1st/1st UK Printings, a set with very poor dust wrappers (in pieces) just sold for about £9,000 at auction, with very bad condition on the spines and water damage to the bindings. If you want first editions then these are very popular (as much more affordable).

    • @darren6768
      @darren6768 5 місяців тому

      I think they sold for their retail price with fees . They have gone up a fair bit in the last few years and in some ways if you liked and wanted a set it doesn't really matter how much you pay if you are happy with the price as they will soon get out of your reach of a lot of collectors and if they don't buy them soon like the firsts

    • @asmrjules

      @@asmrjules about 4 or 5 years ago I would sell a set for that price if they was 7/8/9 printings and the second edition with the green covers if I remember correctly is from 1966 would sell for £150-200 a set now they are fetching good money too . I guess we sometimes forget how much and quickly things go up in value .. I never thought a casino royale pan would fetch £500 to £600 or I would have bought 1000 copies at a £10 each back in the day .
