Great photos and a very thorough explanation for long exposure photography Adrian! This is a form of photography that I get a great deal of satisfaction out of mainly because the amount of thought and setup that we have to go through is usually rewarded with a great image!

I was on vacation recently and I forgot to cover the viewfinder on some long exposures and ended up with some ruined photos because of light leak so that was a great reminder. Awesome photos as well!

The Wanaka tree 😍 I’d love to go to that spot one day. Long exposure NR is my best friend while tskijg stacked macro shots as well. Forgot to switch it to On, had been on auto and had to do so much clean up in post because hot/ stuck pixels left trails all over my stacked shots haha. Great tips/explanation as always! I’m looking forward to taking some long expos as well, haven’t used my Nisi filters for ages, miss it!:) P.s the Neist Lighthouse, gtfo too beautiful:) great image Adrian!
Cheers Peter. Did you hear some clowns vandalised the Wanaka tree? I knew this day would come. It was out in the open and had become so popular that some t*rd had to spoil the party. At least I got to photograph it while it was whole. Yeah that Neist lighthouse shot, if only you knew what I had to do to get that shot in hurricane like winds haha! Talk about hug the ground! Yeah NR just zaps those hot pixels and I also notice it helps get rid of any dust spots on your sensor too. Should have mentioned that in the video 👍🙏📸

I've just bought the D850 with 24 - 120mm as an upgrade from a D5300. Keeping the 5300 as second body. Always shoot Manual RAW. Looking forward to getting out with the new beast. Need to further hone my camera skills though.🤔
Excellent images and a well-presented video! Something I'd like to clarify: I'm not sure why switching to back button focussing would make any difference in this scenario. I would have thought that focus should be achieved before attaching a filter otherwise, yes, the focussing system can get very confused and start hunting regardless of whether the shutter button or back button are used to achieve focus.
Wow...that shot at 2:18 is just phenomenal Adrian! That's on the Isle of Skye correct? We ran out of time when we were there and had to turn around just past Eilean Donan. Now I'm kicking myself for not allowing more time to cross over to the Isle of Skye! Excellent tips as always. Hi Rob, yes that shot is on the Isle of Skye. On my first trip to Scotland, the same thing happened to me, only I kind of lost my way after Eilean Donan and didn't think there was much over on the Isle of Skye. Boy was I wrong! Made sure on my second trip to actually stay on the Isle of Skye and I got some great landscape shots there. You can get even cheaper shutter release cables on ebay for the D850 for around $4 US dollars now. Have a great weekend my friend and take care. PS. maybe hang off on the shutter release if you're upgrading the D850. I didn't realise the D750 shutter release cable I have is the same for the Z6 and Z7. 👍🙏📸
Great information for long exposure photography. I have Nikon D850, 14-24 mm, 24-70 mm and Lee filters as well but post processing is the key factor here. Can you please share the post processing for these photos ? That would be wonderful complete Long Exposure Landscape Photography Technique !! Thank you.

Hi Adrian. This is really huge help for me and I am loving your photos and vids. Im an amateur photographer but I am geared up for Astros etc and have been off Auto for a while. Im wondering if can you suggest a tripod _ I think your on a Manfrotto ? During this video you have said F11 - How do you find the best Fstop for your lens or are they all about the same ? You said that you got off the back of the camera 1/8 - How - was that in auto mode prior to going to M ? Sorry for all of the questions but Im super keen to give this a red hot go - Im on a D750. Hi Pen - I do use a Manfrotto tripod, but mine maybe a tad overkill for the D750. However this Manfrotto tripod would be worth a look and you can get it in a range of colours like blue, black, red, grey etc.amzn.to/3oQIvmB I think you'll find anything between F8 to F11 will be fine for the sharpest images for landscape photography on any lens really. I use F11 a lot because it gives me the sharpest focus all the way through my images. Astro however is a whole different set up. You'll need a wide fast lens, something like a F1.8 to F2.8. I have the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8, but Nikon also make a superb 20mm F1.8 F mount prime lens which is just awesome for astro, especially on the D750. To get your shutter speed (like 1/8) you saw in video. Go to M mode, look through viewfinder or on back of screen in live view. Keep moving rear dial on D750 until the indicator gets to middle "0" on exposure scale. Then look at your shutter speed. That's the number you have to use to calculate your long exposure. Very importantly cover up the back viewfinder on the D750. When you bought it, you should have got a little back piece of plastic that fits snug over the viewfinder to block light getting in. Hi Adrian, very pleased to watch you videos with D850. I am still using my D7100. in regards to your last photo, where did you focus on? the foreground tree. the tree behind or the sea? or it doesn't matter with F11? thank you 😊
I loved this. Would you be okay to use the top horseshow to have a wireless intervelometer instead? I remembered in Iceland I had wired one on my canon 6D M2 and the wire keeps bumping if there is a wind or I have to hold it and it is inconvenience.
You can go wireless. I use a bit of velcro on my tripod leg and now stick the shutter release to it which stops any motion of the wire. Cheap and easy fix.
Thank you for your explanation and congrats on your beautiful photos Adrian. I am a newbie to long exposure photography and I have a question. When it comes to keeping the shutter open for X seconds; does it mean that I have to keep the cable shutter button pressed until the timer in the App hits Zero? Not sure about this yet. I have a Z6 and a simple remote cable. Thanks for your help!
Thanks for watching Yo. Yes you have to keep the remote shutter button pressed in. However, most of these remote shutter release have a lock on them. So when you push in and slide up it keeps it pressed in for you in case you need to let it go and go do something else. Then come back and unclick to let the shutter close again. Cheers 🙏📸
Cash you explain why in many of your long exposure images you use a ten stop filter and not a six or four when there’s no physical sun in the image? In other words instead of lets say a 4 minute exposure you could have a two minute one! Great informative video and I subscribed just now, Thank you.
It all depends on what I'm photographing. I find using the 10 stop ND a happy mid range filter for long exposures, especially during sunrises and sunsets. Sometimes I find anything under 10 stops does not give me enough long exposure time and anything over 10 stops is too long. I also have 3 stop ND I use for waterfall shots. In this video you would have seen shots from around the world I've taken using both a 6 stop and 10 stop ND filter, so I don't just use a 10 stop all the time. Adrian Alford Photography I noticed that when viewed in the original image on the back of the camera 📷 there was no saturation but after you placed on the ten stop Nd and showed us the image there was beautiful deep saturation in the image! Was that the reason for you making long exposures (excluding smoothing the water) in other words does the long exposure give you the saturation or did you do that in Lightroom or photoshop?
Hi thanks for watching, much appreciated. You'll love the D850, great camera. As for the shutter release, you can actually get cheaper ones than mine now for around $4 US dollars. Just search on ebay "Nikon D850 Shutter Release Cable" you'll find heaps there, just take your pick. I think it's a 10 pin connector at the front of the camera. 🙏
Hi Jeff - by shooting in live view on the D850 the shutter is not activated, so I don't get any shutter shake in LE. You can use mirror lockup if looking through a viewfinder if you wish to get same.

Darren Ridsdale little secret. Check out the photographers in your area. Work out the type of photography that is least available to the public. Like pet photography, head portrait shots only etc. Specialise in that one type of photography only and become really good at it. Then you get hired a lot more.
Yes I hear that a lot Darren. I guess you can fix that in post processing but it can be a pain. I'm hoping Nikon and Sony eventually adopt what Canon have done with their mirrorless EOS R and R5 where the shutter closes while changing lenses (but I doubt it).

I've just bought the D850 with 24 - 120mm as an upgrade from a D5300. Keeping the 5300 as second body. Always shoot Manual RAW. Looking forward to getting out with the new beast. Need to further hone my camera skills though.🤔

Excellent images and a well-presented video! Something I'd like to clarify:
I'm not sure why switching to back button focussing would make any difference in this scenario. I would have thought that focus should be achieved before attaching a filter otherwise, yes, the focussing system can get very confused and start hunting regardless of whether the shutter button or back button are used to achieve focus.

Hi Rob, yes that shot is on the Isle of Skye. On my first trip to Scotland, the same thing happened to me, only I kind of lost my way after Eilean Donan and didn't think there was much over on the Isle of Skye. Boy was I wrong! Made sure on my second trip to actually stay on the Isle of Skye and I got some great landscape shots there. You can get even cheaper shutter release cables on ebay for the D850 for around $4 US dollars now. Have a great weekend my friend and take care. PS. maybe hang off on the shutter release if you're upgrading the D850. I didn't realise the D750 shutter release cable I have is the same for the Z6 and Z7. 👍🙏📸
Great information for long exposure photography. I have Nikon D850, 14-24 mm, 24-70 mm and Lee filters as well but post processing is the key factor here. Hi Adrian. This is really huge help for me and I am loving your photos and vids. Im an amateur photographer but I am geared up for Astros etc and have been off Auto for a while. Im wondering if can you suggest a tripod _ I think your on a Manfrotto ? During this video you have said F11 - How do you find the best Fstop for your lens or are they all about the same ? Hi Pen - I do use a Manfrotto tripod, but mine maybe a tad overkill for the D750. However this Manfrotto tripod would be worth a look and you can get it in a range of colours like blue, black, red, grey etc.amzn.to/3oQIvmB I think you'll find anything between F8 to F11 will be fine for the sharpest images for landscape photography on any lens really. I use F11 a lot because it gives me the sharpest focus all the way through my images. Astro however is a whole different set up. You'll need a wide fast lens, something like a F1.8 to F2.8. I have the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8, but Nikon also make a superb 20mm F1.8 F mount prime lens which is just awesome for astro, especially on the D750. To get your shutter speed (like 1/8) you saw in video. Go to M mode, look through viewfinder or on back of screen in live view. Keep moving rear dial on D750 until the indicator gets to middle "0" on exposure scale. Then look at your shutter speed. That's the number you have to use to calculate your long exposure. Very importantly cover up the back viewfinder on the D750. When you bought it, you should have got a little back piece of plastic that fits snug over the viewfinder to block light getting in. Hi Adrian, great videos. I ahve just purchased my D850 - upgraded form a Kodak/Nikon DCS 760! Yes I know, noah had one. I mainly used it in the studio with studio lighting. Have you any videos on a studio flash setup? Also, the Yongnuo time remote controller you mentioned in this video, is it a one piece item? I have tried to source one like the one in the video but appreciate this was shot 3 years ago, any suggestions please?

Hi Adrian, very pleased to watch you videos with D850. I am still using my D7100. in regards to your last photo, where did you focus on? the foreground tree. the tree behind or the sea? or it doesn't matter with F11?

I loved this. Would you be okay to use the top horseshow to have a wireless intervelometer instead? I remembered in Iceland I had wired one on my canon 6D M2 and the wire keeps bumping if there is a wind or I have to hold it and it is inconvenience.
You can go wireless. I use a bit of velcro on my tripod leg and now stick the shutter release to it which stops any motion of the wire. Cheap and easy fix.

When it comes to keeping the shutter open for X seconds; does it mean that I have to keep the cable shutter button pressed until the timer in the App hits Zero? Not sure about this yet. I have a Z6 and a simple remote cable. Thanks for your help!
Thanks for watching Yo. Yes you have to keep the remote shutter button pressed in. However, most of these remote shutter release have a lock on them. So when you push in and slide up it keeps it pressed in for you in case you need to let it go and go do something else. Then come back and unclick to let the shutter close again. Cheers 🙏📸

Cash you explain why in many of your long exposure images you use a ten stop filter and not a six or four when there’s no physical sun in the image? In other words instead of lets say a 4 minute exposure you could have a two minute one! Great informative video and I subscribed just now, Thank you.
It all depends on what I'm photographing. I find using the 10 stop ND a happy mid range filter for long exposures, especially during sunrises and sunsets. Sometimes I find anything under 10 stops does not give me enough long exposure time and anything over 10 stops is too long. I also have 3 stop ND I use for waterfall shots. In this video you would have seen shots from around the world I've taken using both a 6 stop and 10 stop ND filter, so I don't just use a 10 stop all the time. Adrian Alford Photography I noticed that when viewed in the original image on the back of the camera 📷 there was no saturation but after you placed on the ten stop Nd and showed us the image there was beautiful deep saturation in the image! Was that the reason for you making long exposures (excluding smoothing the water) in other words does the long exposure give you the saturation or did you do that in Lightroom or photoshop?
The ND does help a little in saturation, the rest is in post processing.

Just search on ebay "Nikon D850 Shutter Release Cable" you'll find heaps there, just take your pick. I think it's a 10 pin connector at the front of the camera. 🙏

Hi Jeff - by shooting in live view on the D850 the shutter is not activated, so I don't get any shutter shake in LE. You can use mirror lockup if looking through a viewfinder if you wish to get same.

Darren Ridsdale little secret. Check out the photographers in your area. Work out the type of photography that is least available to the public. Like pet photography, head portrait shots only etc. Specialise in that one type of photography only and become really good at it. Then you get hired a lot more.

Yes I hear that a lot Darren. I guess you can fix that in post processing but it can be a pain. I'm hoping Nikon and Sony eventually adopt what Canon have done with their mirrorless EOS R and R5 where the shutter closes while changing lenses (but I doubt it).
