Great video. I was in the same location on 15 Sep after 9 days of gloomy weather in NYC. Several other photographers had the same idea. I wanted to go over the fence, but nobody else had and I assumed they knew the police would probably come by and move them out. It would have been the best location. This is one of my shots. The posts are too strong in the foreground I think. instagram.com/p/BnxmFiRnAzb/

Attilio, I was very happy to see this comparison of these two cameras. I also have a D810 and the 20mm f/1.8G lens, and don't feel any need to upgrade to the D850 to be able to get better results.

Hello Attilio, i saw this video maybe one year ago. I decided to visit New York at the end of summer. I remember that you showed pictures in old pier one and i checked your D810 parameters to try by myself ! Thanks a lot for all your videos. As you can see, these are always so interesting many years after.

Seeing the side by side images here truly emphasizes the superiority of the 20mm lens you use. There's quite a dramatic contrast between the 20mm and the 24-70 at 24mm. I have a 16-35mm lens and your demonstration makes me second guess my purchase. With your 20mm lens one must use their legs to frame a composition though, something I'm not always able to do being a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair. Anyway, I always find your videos interesting and appreciate the effort you put into making them.

There are a few variables that may have affected the final image quality. First they were shot on two very different lens. One is a zoom lens while the other is a prime lens. I think you should of shoot the same photos on the same spot with the same lens but only change out the camera body to be fair. Also, I don't believe a 120 second exposure shot is a good way to compare sharpness between cameras let alone on two very different lens. Another problem is you didn't zoom in to the same resolution. That's another reason the photo on the right looks sharper because it is not zoom in as much as the D850 file. Sorry, I just don't feel this is a good test to compare these two cameras.

Great video..............There are only a very few cameras that can match the image quality of the D810. I want to clear this up for any new photographers that is looking to spend a little over $2000 on a new camera . Even tho the D810's design is a few years old now it is still one of the top 3 or 4 cameras if you are interested in image quality . If you are a photographer looking for image quality and only have around $2000 to spend, the D810 is the only camera to buy . The New micro 4/3's cameras by Olympus, Panasonic and the new APSC cameras by Fuji and Sony can not even come close to the capabilities of the D810 in low light and image quality . The D850 and the Sony A7R3 are better cameras but 90% of the general public could never tell the difference between a photo taken with a D850 and a D810 . Canon still has not made a better image quality camera than the D810 and they have released 4 new cameras sence the D810 was released.

Yes, and that sucks, because now what do I do with my 6D, 7D, 100mm macro f2.8, 17-40mm f4.0, 28-135mm f3.5-5.6, 70-200mm f4.0 (an awesome one), 100-400 f4.5-5.6, 40mm f2.8 pancake, 10-18mm, 2 Rokinon lenses for Canon mount, flashes, cables, and I must forget some. I'd loose so much money resseling the stuff (and that is if it sells) that all I could buy from the D810 would probaly be the body cap. And if I buy a used D810 there'll soon be more dust on my Canon stuff than in the Mojave desert. Any solution ?.. Also when William mention a "very few" camera that can match, they probably don't in price, since he probably thinks high end Haselblad (pleonasm), Mamiya, Leica...

Hi Attilio, great video. I know obviously you have your d810 and so would naturally prefer to use it above all else, but have you ever used an APS-C camera for your landscape photography? For example your G85? I'm just interested as I am 100% totally new to photography and have just bought a canon 800d (T7i). I opted for this camera because it's a relatively inexpensive option and I plan to use it as an all rounder, i.e. video and stills. Obviously there are drawbacks to a cropped sensor, but is it still possible to get good landscape images? Cheers.

Attilio, Thanks for your like on my other comment. And as always, thanks for your videos that make many progress and embrace your vision. Now a quick question, but I don't know if you know the first box, I'm into milky way photography (but in LA so heck of a drive to start to see the sky), and as much as I'll probably end up ditching for a used D810 at some point for lanscape, my 2 Canon bodies and 5/7 grand invested in canon glass over the years kind of backs me up. Nevertheless, being into milky way stuff, I wanted to know if you had an opinion between the A7S from Sony with its mere 12mpx but a true noise beast and supposedly very good at night stuff, or if you can really get as good with a D810, which having more pixels density might be prone to more noise. I'm pretty sure the D810 is best or better in most other regards but here it's a specific type of photography, and noise is the key, as I'm not in star tracking yet and mainly work with single exposures or short stacks in Sequator. My 6D so far, for ok it's supposed to be with noise could not rival the A7S I think, and on top of it it has the infamous low pass filter, which both the D810 and A7s beautifully don't have. Also, does the D810 sensor heat fast ? 6D is bad on that adding so much more noise pretty fast. Any tip on all that ?.. Completely aside, a word on Pizza quickly. Weren't you surprised in U.S. (well at least in Ca, I don't know for East coast) to go to a pizzeria and never find on the table the spicy oil made available readilly in Europe pizzerias ? Here you just get the red pepper seeds dry most of the time (Really, but what can I do with that ? It doesn't bring the instant flavor burst the oil brings) I'm lucky though, the Italian restaurant I go to knows me now and friendly do some in the back kitchen (heating those seeds in olive oil) for me each time I order Pizza, but I found curious not to see it anywhere here. Did you see any ?.. I found some imported at "Bay Cities", an italian deli in Santa Monica, so at least I have some at home, but it's funny how food culture travels, and loose or gain some on the way sometime...

Thanks for the video - as usually very interesting. I use both D810 and D850 - I find the blacklit sensor on the D850 makes quite a difference especially in low light. I do a lot of night work where there is a very wide dynamic range and much prefer to work with the D850 as it produces significantly cleaner images on a like by like basis. With the right lens the D850 produces sharper images with less colour bleed than the D810 as well if you like to view at 100%.

Hi Attilio, Thank you for the great videos you produce. The two cameras are really close to each other when it comes to the image quality. One needs to consider the effect of downsizing the 45 MP image into e.g., a 36 MP one, as that gives an improvement in both noise and sharpness. When you then compare the output of the two cameras, all things being equal (including the lens and filters) except the camera bodies, the image from the D850 shall be a bit sharper and possibly a touch less noisy, especially if you need to lift shadows a bit. I can however only imagine that such is very rarely needed on modern Nikon cameras (myself shooting a Canon 5DsR, which gives me a nice deal more noise in the shadows). One thing that made me wonder a bit was the fact that you didn't use custom color profiles for the combination of your cameras, lenses and filters. That would eliminate pretty much all color cast from any of these. A very handy and cheap tool to doing this is the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport (there are more products like that). If I was to start with photography today, that would likely be the first thing I would buy after a camera, lens and a tripod. A step further then is making custom ICC profiles, e.g., using Lumariver. In my experience, the combination of Capture One and Lumariver really blows away using just Lightroom and ColorChecker - and done properly, I also find it to effectively extend the dynamic range compared to my old Lightroom workflow.

Do yourself a favour and don't do what I did... I was perfectly happy, more than happy, with my D810 and all my lenses I used with it. Creating gorgeous images, to this day I still look at and go wow! But then I got caught up with all the hype about the D850; what a fantastic camera it is - all that bollocks. So I sold my 810 and bought myself a D850. And you know what?? The instant I started looking at the images I took with the thing in Lightroom it was an instant REGRET! My favourite lenses I loved using with the D810 were looking worse! The 850 was out-rendering my lenses that were working perfectly fine before. It shown imperfections in the corners that were perfectly sharp all the way to the corners with the D810. I am picky about things like that, it's just the way I am. It would had meant I would have had to sell all my lenses and spend even more money getting new lenses to work better with the thing. Getting rid of lenses I was perfectly happy with before and spending god knows what on other lenses on top of what I already forked out for the camera! In the end I ended up selling the 850 and getting another 810, losing money in the process. NOW I'm happy with my images again, but lost hundreds of pounds finding all this out. There was no way I would had sold my lenses too! I lost money, but I would had spent more money getting new lenses for that thing! The point I'm getting at, if you already have an 810, seriously think twice about "upgrading" it to an 850, because if you are happy with the images you are getting out the 810, there is no point AT ALL in getting the 850! No point whatsoever! Don't do what I did and instantly regret it and lose money. Rant over :)

Attilio buona-sera, one thing comes to mind when comparing these two cameras which I am also using the D-810, you should have borrowed the camera of your friend and attached your lens and taken a shot with it then you might notice a difference. But also if you guys where shooting later into the evening and compared the noise level of the two cameras that might have given you another example. I read on line and here on You-tube some people complain the noise in the D-850 but I know from experience that my D-810 camera has a limitation that I would not go over ISO-800 to get a clean image, and that is also dependent on good glass that transmits more light. I also watched the video you posted using the 20-mm prime and I am thinking of purchasing that lens as well.
You create some excellent images with your current setup and it is more than adequate if you are happy, it is what counts. By the way I am looking forward to buy the D-750 because of the weight issues which is lighter and its low light capabilities, good auto-focus and the tilting screen. Noise is something that I detest in images, I prefer a smaller file and a clean one. have you tried the D-750 by any chance? I would like to know your opinion if you can, if not no problem. Cheers.

Hi sir I have trouble reading the right shutterspeed on my D800 together with a ND app the app has different scale or numbers than the nikon. Nikon is 1 2 3 4 than 1.5 als 10 20 30 and so on but the nd ap had different values that is a bummer becouse I have no idee what time to set. For the right exposure with a nd filter. All the apps have the same time measurement but why it is not the same with the camera what is than the purpose of the apps..

      @paolomatarelli 6 років тому

yes, can happen, but with my other dslr Canon 70D in same shot with same settings (30" ISO 1600) I've 3 hot pixels and with the d850 100/120 hot pixel with LNR on And high iso NR norm but since 8" ISO1600 the d850 present that hot pixels and change position shot by shot. I've sent DSRL the third day for sensor remap and anything was change. now the DSL is to LTR Service (official Italy) and they don't tell me anything about.

I have both cameras and just got the d850. The d850 has the latest greatest af which I was needing for what I do . But other than that so far as image quality I’m not seeing a big difference. It seems the color from the d850 is different and I like it . I also have the d500 and the d850 in usability for faster action type photography is a good match and button layout is the same . I love all three cameras.

I did an evening landscape comparison between my D800e and D850 some time ago, using the same lens from the same position. The resulting files were very close indeed. The convenience of the tilt screen was great, and I have had more success with my wildlife photography with the D850, with it's better AF and 7fps frame rate.
IQ wise, big difference on paper, but extremely minimal in the real world of landscape and portrait shooting...in my opinion.

in live view if in focus .. from a distance :). yes you are 100% correct sir teh D850 is way superior to
the D810 its no contest, you need to use the same lenses to see how great this camera is.

Thank you for this nice video... Glass talks. Here the D810 / 20mm f1.8 combinaison is a killer, very sharp, making look that 24-70mm like some basic kit lense, and showing that all things considered, glass is as, if not more, important than the camera for who wants tack sharpness and clarity. Prime lenses, at equal price vs zoom lenses, will often give you more for your money since, having less components, manufacturers put costier glass on these lenses. IQ from both camera show so little difference that I believe only redoing the test with the same glass/filter combinaison would show us if any, and at what level. The cooler white balance of D810 seems more true to colors and less "muddy" than the D850 shot. You mention it's the added ND3 SG. Since both have a big stopper otherwise, it's either not the same big stopper on the D850 or the white balance comes quiet different if both cameras are set on the same WB.

You should have named this video "20mm vs 24-70mm" instead. No way you can judge the difference between these two cameras with different lenses. And then on top of that you have filters on them. Nothing to compare here except which composition you like better.
